Unlike reputation, character cannot be bought: CSJ's closing submissions for contempt of judiciary, 2008 Print E-mail
Wednesday, 28 May 2008

Singapore Democrats

Your Honour,

This case has been one fraught with acrimony and controversy. Many legal points have been raised, some of which I have understood, others have completely bewildered me. But all the points raised centred around one subject: Whether there was malice when we published that NKF article.

Let me deal with this point. It is clear as daylight that the plaintiffs sued not because their reputations were tarnished but that it was a way to stop our campaigning over the issue during the elections.

Instead of letting the public decide, they have dragged the courts in and insisted that the courts adjudicate in a matter where it should not. In the process, they put the courts in an untenable and unenviable position. This is a tragedy that history will not kindly look upon.

But a court case is what we have and court cases are about seeking the truth and allowing that truth to surface.

As I pointed out, the question centres around whether there was malice on our part.

I cannot deny that I get angry and even bitter with Mr Lee Kuan Yew over the things that he has said and done to me and others. But through the years, I have seen the bigger picture and developed a sense of calm and equanimity that comes with knowing my role in society.

And because I feel at ease, I don't hate Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Lee Hsien Loong. I don't wish them ill in anyway despite all that they have done and continue to do to me and my family.

I harbour no hatred towards Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Lee Hsien Loong, much less any malice.

To hate my opponents would drag me down to their level of rancour and deceit which has no place in what we're trying to achieve for Singapore. I find it too draining and distracting to harbour those emotions.

My Christian faith guides me and it is a faith that compels me to fght for justice and to treat my fellow men and women with compassion.

Mr Lee tempts and taunts me to get out of bankruptcy and get back into the stream of political life that he sits as lord and master. Believe me, in such an environment it is a temptation that can be overpowering.

What I said to Mr Lee Kuan Yew during the cross-examination is exactly where I stand. I feel sorry for him but I don't hate him.

But I also told him that ultimately it isn't about him. Neither is it about his son, and it most certainly is not about me. It is about this country and the people who live in it.

It is about what is just. It is about compassion and how we treat our fellow men. It is about freedom and human dignity.

A society stripped bare of these virtues is a society unable to embrace humanity. A society without humanity is a thought too frightening to entertain.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew kept on repeating how he built up this country and how much he has stored in the reserves. That is the tragedy of the man. For all his intelligence, he does not possess the wisdom of life.

Because unlike reputation, character cannot be bought. A true statesmen will not need to fight for his reputation, for that will shine through even after he takes his final bow and leaves the stage of life. His name will linger on and be writ large fondly in the hearts of many for generations to come.

Many lies have been spread about truly great leaders. And yet these lies have never been able to snuff out the greatness in these individuals. On the contrary, their legacy grows in size and intensity.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew fights all his demons within himself to try to shore up his reputation. In the process, however, he destroys the very legacy that he so desperately desires to establish.

When he pulled out the citation from Transparency International Malaysia and tried to use it as an endorsement of his integrity it, frankly, surprised me because it showed me how empty Mr Lee's life has become.

Such an intelligent man and yet so utterly devoid of wisdom. Can he not understand that no paper, no award, no citation can ever hope to still the voices of those who see the truth behind the propaganda?

I take no joy in pointing out to him how TIM is not an established, well-grounded institution on which one can take pride in being awarded a citation especially on the subject on integrity. In fact, I felt bad to point that out because it seemed that it was all the MM was clinging to.

Mr Lee must understand that integrity cannot, and does not, come from the grandiloquence of one's speech, it must shine forth from the righteousness of one's heart. If that light of righteousness is dim, no amount of persuasion will brighten it.

Can he not grasp the fact that no amount of wealth and power can hold back the silent voices forever? When he is no longer with us in this world, no amount of suppression can hold back the vehemence of his critics.

I hope he takes the little time that he has left to ponder what I have said and to turn from his ways. It is not too late.

Over the last couple of days in court I have observed, as have many here, how those around him treat him with such servitude that made my hair stand on end. For whatever reason, they go out of their way to show him their subservience.

They are doing him a disservice by not telling him that he needs to amend his ways if he so desires to uphold his integrity. Maybe he has chosen to surround himself with these yes-people. Either way Mr Lee is moving in life's wrong direction.

Which brings me to the damages. I stand by everything I have written in the article in The New Democrat about the NKF as it relates to the running of this country because it is the truth and Mr Lee and the rulers of this country must always hear the truth no matter how inconvenient that truth may be.

I know what I say now will not make a difference in terms of damages.

I willingly assume the position in this life because if this is the path that God has chosen for me then I cannot run away.

I can leave this country or I can capitulate and join what others have done in politics under the PAP. I will do neither. For to me my own integrity is at stake and that cannot be paid for in dollars.

Mr Lee may try to tempt me out of bankruptcy but it will not work. I may remain a bankrupt for the rest of my life as a result of my obstinacy. It is not a position one aspires to but it is a cause I find worthy of battle and a call, though sometimes I may resist, I will ultimately trust and obey.

So, Your Honour, we have come to the stage where all of us will be held to account for what we do today. It is said that as we make our bed, so shall we lie in it.

What we do today will live on in history forever. I do not envy your position. I ask that you forgive me if I have offended you in a personal way. I had no intention of doing that. In another place and time, we would be, perhaps, good friends.

But I have to take issue with your position as a Judge and what you have done as well as the decisions you have made in this courtroom. To that extent I will fight you with every fibre of my being for the sake of justice.

We all have decisions to make in life. I have made mine and I am at ease with it. You have yours to make. I wish you wisdom and honesty.

Thank you.

CHEE SOON JUAN

Great article. Truth as well as good reputation need no defense. History will be the best judge. What this country really needs now is WISDOM not intelligence.

I have to say that this is an impressively eloquent and moving speech.

Such a cool, dignified summation of the moral principles he lives by and demonstrably upholds by his very presence in that court. Dr. Chee addressed the values of integrity, wisdom, character, in a way that ought to make the ears of his tormentors burn with shame and humiliation.

At long last, poor lost Singapore has a leader worthy of the name. He sounded almost like the spirit of David Marshall come to life in his ringing defence of the under-dog and his affirmation of his love for his country and its people.

Thank you, Dr. Chee. You have raced as high up the ladder of respect as your detractors have fallen.

Majulah Singapura.

Beautiful,.. we must find a way to get this speech out to more and more people,.. perhaps he can record it on youtube,... definitely an important speech in the history of singapore
• Joe Liberty - Mr
This is a very sad day for Singapore as history will eventually pass the final verdict. This was a day of unbelievable shame, where a foolish father and an equally foolish son, have manipulated, very deviously, the whole system to advance their own selfish and cruel rule. They unashamedly used a compromised judiciary and the whole state power to attack and silence 2 innocent and brave individuals whose only 'crime' is to free the people of Singapore from decades of injustices and misrule and to bring about accountability in public life. Such a regime which is built on the foundation of lies and denial of basic rights to its citizens will be destined to fall. That day may not be long in coming and when that comes to pass all these cronies who are collaborators and co-operators with evil will be running for their lives!

Then they will find no place to hide. Their evil deeds will eventually catch up with them as they have the blood of the innocents on their hands and ill-gotten gains in their banks!

Bravo and kudos Soon Juan!
Your speech this day will pass on into the annals of history as a superb inspiring speech of freedom in the ranks of Martin Luther King's speech as well as Winston Churchill's as they face their despotic enemies squarely.
I'm absolutely certain you will be vindicated and held to the Nation's greatest honour and respect one day! Just be patient." What does not kill me will make me stronger!"
No man and hence no despot lives forever. As you very kindly reminded our Despot: "Whatever little time you have left, repent and see the errors of your ways."

• mahjongking - to dr chee and people from sdp
is interesting to see what were posted here and witnessing the entire trial in court...

i do not know dr chee personally but i would like to post a few questions to dr chee and his SDP followers... hope they can answer my questions so i can have different opinion of dr chee and his party...

number 1: can dr chee explained why he was accused of being dishonest in NTU? did he used university funds for personal usage? why was he sacked eventually?

number 2: why was mr chiam see tong ousted when sdp was doing well under his leadership? what has mr chiam done to be ousted?

number 3: sdp under mr chiam managed to won 3 seats in parliament. when dr chee took over, there is ZERO... what is the reason for his failure?

number 4: why did dr chee apologized to mr lee kuan yew and mr goh chook tong and then later said he was forced to? please remember that nobody can force a man of strong conviction to do anything. if dr chee is willing to go all the way to court to defend himself, why apologized at the first place?

number 5: dr chee was given ample time to prepare his case against the defamation suit filed by mr lee and mr goh... why dr chee did nothing and was in taiwan for a fellowship? is it a serious allegation that dr chee would like to defend if he claimed that he did nothing wrong? is dr chee afraid of facing the music and did not know what to do but want to save his face?

number 6: i noticed in some of sdp protests, children were involved. i have never seen such things in protests here in singapore or overseas... can dr chee explained? i watched "nation under lee" on youtube and noticed in the last part of the movie that a little girl was in the midst of a protest held at istana... she was crying when dr chee was led away by the police... i presumed the little girl is dr chee's daughter... how would a sane man brought her daughter to a protest when he anticipated that police will come and he will be arrested? is dr chee putting her daughter in a unsafe situation because you never know what will happen in a protest... is dr chee a responsible father?

number 7: it seemed that dr chee will attack pm and mm when there is opportunity... some of the attacks are ridiculous... is it something personal?

number 8: dr chee claimed the government is corrupted like NKF, can he forward the people of singapore the evidence to his claim?

number 9: (been asking this for a long time) dr chee claimed that the press in singapore is controlled by the government and the government is covering up the wrongdoings of nkf... what i observed is that the straits time under spf was the press that uncovered the things in nkf... so what dr chee got to say about this?

i hope dr chee and the people from sdp will answers my simple questions... thank you!

If it's something worth fighting for, I never doubted the spirit of Dr Chee and Ms Chee have shown me when I met them, what was said in court summed up what I would have wanted to say to LKY and LHL if I ever get a chance to meet them face to face.

No matter what happens, history will decide whom stood up for the people, many still do not see what the SDP is doing, i'll never regret having made friends with this group of true warriors.

God Bless you guys, for a battle is won today. The system has been shown it's obvious flaws, best they act on it before we all go down in it.
• Tan Tai Wei
Chee raised an issue which Judge Ang, being so sensitive about "contempt of court", ought to be very concerned about. The defamation suit, Chee said, was only an electioneering ploy, aimed at preventing the NKF issue to be raised during the general election.

If true, that was not only abusing the courts (very contemptuous of court indeed), but getting the court to collude in an attempt to deprive Singaporeans of their constitutional right of choice where ALL issues are open and faced.
• standup10 - an ovation for truth in courage
The speech is classic as it reflects what most dissidents would want to say to the Father and Son for the last few decades. It reminds me of the debate between Marcos and Aquino(who eventually was imprisoned after that).
It also resembles a "Jesus-like" touch. For this,Chee may be remembered as "Cheesus" someday for his wisdom and courage despite being "cruxiFIXED" (just like the many dissidents)by "Father and the Son" all these years.
As for Ms Chee Siok Chin, she may also earn the honor of being Singapore's "Aung San Su Chee" for her
struggle for Democracy.
The losers this time round and forever written in History are obvious.
May God vindicate the righteous....

Excellent speech! Bravo

My greatest admiration to you Dr Chee. Your fight against injustices to the basic rights of S'poreans will go with distinction and honor in the annals of our country.

Totally agree.
For LKY to cite from TIM shows his desperation and how hollow he has become. Sad old man.

mahjongking,

I have come to realise 2 things about Dr Chee. The two distinct stages, the pre-internet Chee and the current internet Chee. In other words I have come to the conclusion that it is our media's portrayal of Chee that has effectively tainted Chee. Our media is generally ok, but when it comes to political coverage you have to treat it like a PAP newsletter or opposition hate journal. You witness this during the media's coverage of general Elections past and present, and anything slightly political. The blatant distortion and one sided bias is nauseating and incredible. You witness this again in this few day's coverage in the papers. In the present internet age the media no longer has a monopoly on what S'poreans get to read. While some of your questions deal with Chee's deeds in the pre-internet age, I will first question the reports of these deeds by our media.

Am not a SDP supporter and these are only my thoughts as an average S'porean. The questions maybe u can ask Chee if u get to meet him in person.

Some responses...

No 7 - Why should the mm and pm be above criticisms? I hope it is not the fear of law suits that make people reluctant to criticise, as we are witnessing in S'pore now.

No 8 - I have read the Singapore Democrat. The article did not claim the govt is corrupt, rather it sounds a warning of the parallels between NKF and the govt. The lack of transparency and accountability. Somehow (most likely deliberately) mm and pm construe it as claim. In other words they used a straw man argument basis to sue Chee. Even i can see through that. And the kangaroo court does the rest.
• taxidriver - UNbalanced Law in S'pore
1)It was certainly a good question to ask who covers their duties as PM/MM while they fight a "personal" case. Did they apply leave?

2)Can we ordinary citizens do that?? Do personal work w/o leave, MC?? One law for superpowers and others?? Straightaway courtmarshalled in PAP court! Employers in Singapore are the same - acting like mini LKYs!

4)Where was the SM? Was he covering the PM/MM? Where is he? But yet they get paid and get bonuses?

5) Is this integrity? Cheat/lier of the highest order! Trying to act like puritans by wearing all white, sadly cannot hide the dirt.
• Anonymous - Powerful words
I am touched beyond expression with those words in Dr.Chee's closing statement.

I hope many a time will come where many will understand this man, who has chosen to walk a very long and difficult road to make his voice be heard.

I waited outside of the court yesterday, and I saw Dr. Chee when he came out with my own two eyes.

I must be honest. There were no supporters waiting outside from what I could see. Maybe they were too scared to be there. Maybe they were too busy, but I beg those of you who care, on Friday, please show this man support when he walks out from the court for the last time, and let not only the eager camera man welcome his exit.

Yesterday, I saw a man who walks alone, a path reserved only for the strong spirited.
I wish him the best of luck, and I hope people will not try to be discouraged, no matter what the outcome may be.
• Gary Teoh
Can some one post the declassified statement from British? Or where to search for it.I heard LKY is a coward, but we need proof from the declassified statement.only then we can print flyers and distribute without kena defamation.
• Peter Ching - Transparency International
Can Dr Chee enlighten his supporters on the whole truth, and nothing but the trust regarding the Dr Peter Eigen and Transparency International issue ?
• Thinktok - Eloquent but full of contradictions
Dr Chee is eloquent and intelligent but flying at the level of a 737 at best. To those who are anti-government, anti-PAP or anti-Lee, for whatever reasons, what Dr Chee said was music to their ears. But then when it comes to reality who is going to provide a stable government, jobs, honest leadership, freedom and human rights? I think the Government has delivered. No amount of rhetorics is going to change the facts.
For Dr Chee to say that he pitied Mr Lee is to say the least "incredible and laughable". The only prize Dr Chee can claim is to say that he was briefly in the same boxing ring with MM Lee, never mind making an ass out of himself in the process.

It is obvious that you are full of hate for the Lees and for what they stand for, but, you keep lying to the people and say that they are not in your mind at all.

Thank God you are not in power.
• CHUA CHUAN SEAH - Human Needs and Goals of Our Citizens
Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hsien Loong and the rest of the PAP Government are only after fame, money, power. They express themselves in a cold, inhumane way. What they deny in themselves is love, care, concern, understanding, devotion to ideals, creativeness, wisdom, respect, happiness and sexual satisfaction.

They should relate more to the ordinary people, promote individuality, regard reason with reverence, and sleep well.

Finally, they have knowledge but not wisdom and compassion.
• Chew
Is Lee Kuan Yew not a hypocrite? Is Lee Kuan Yew not lying about Singapore being a democratic country?

"But we either believe in democracy or we not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed... If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought, and no excuse, whether of security, should allow a government to be deterred from doing what it knows to be right, and what it must know to be right... What CSJ did there are thousands of civil servant are doing it everyday working for statuory boards or goverment offices or universities even in private sector.

Now ask yourself did the PM or MM take leave to attend personal court matters?

I believe the answer is NO.
How much is taxpayers paying them for unofficial leave? Sgd 10K per day x 2?

Now who abuse more in $ and cents?

Why CSJ have been single out because he was the Opposition member.
• Tan Tai Wei - So sorry
Just wondering again...Chee was able, in his closing speech, to appeal to values such as love and compassion, and to the Christian God of love. That was something persons cannot do, who would habitually and readily call a fellow human a "cheat and liar" and gloat in naming him a "psychopath". I, like Chee, feel sorry for such persons.
• Undigestible - 2 sets of law
Our policy here is HIGH PAY FOR HIGH STANDARDS. Question: Where is that high standard
WE NEED TO PAY MILLIONS FOR THE BEST...so where is the BEST in this situation?

I think for their own PAP good, they better listen to the people and stop telling us what to do and cut all the crab.

When we, as car owners and a citizen do not put a car coupon time, we get fine. If we underpay our SBS Transit bus ticket, we got caught and get a fine.
When a "terrorist" escape under PAP's nose, we are asked to forgive their mistake ?

When you become an opposition you are sued and made bankcrupt and go to jail? Even if you make some sense?

What rubbish? my 3yr old knows what is wrong and right, please lah! How long to con us?

thanks for your reply. does not mean that if you see a shopper stealing some items in the supermarket, you will also steal some for yourself? come on, if dr chee wants to be a political leader, he got to be clean in his deeds and actions...

if dr chee did not publish his allegations on SDP papers, does pm and mm have to attend court?

by the way, can anyone enlighten me why sdp allows children to be part of their protests? pls...

The court case is obviously one sided.Chee has to answer for contempt of court, whereas LKY by barging into the court with the security guards,no need to answer for contempt. The judiciary is siding the govt. otherwise if the govt. loses the case, then it will be a laughing stock.

To majongking.....Maybe u r deaf, but I was also there and my attention at the action in front was distracted by a loud opening of the court's main doors! I then turned my head around and saw 6-8 men apparently security people walking in briskly and quite noisily. They made way for their VVIP (LKY) and he sauntered in like an aged John Wayne. Yes u r right in one sense, LKY walked slowly and quietly but definitely NOT his 6-8 security detail who barged in like they own the place.
• HKMP5
Thinktok,

Who needs a stable, yet possibly "corrupt" government? Honest Leadership? We have no certainty of that today. Currently, there is no public account and audit of our national, GIC, Temasek funds. Nobody outside the famiLees' circle has an inkling how the funds are managed. There is great truth in the saying, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Therefore, the objective of a true democratic society is to have checks and balances to make sure such a scenerio does not happen.

Jobs creation? If the PAPpies through underhanded means/schemes, unfair election regulations, barriers and media coverage prevent oppositions to have a fair chance to be elected, how would oppositions have the chance to be in positions to set policies on jobs creation? It's not that opps can't, it's just that their chance is denied.

Haha mahjongking u are pathetic. Surely SDP does not have a monopoly on the english language. Words like kangaroo, straw man, are universal and they just happen to aptly describe the situation we have here.

In bringing up the rest of the opposition parties, it appears to me your understanding of politics is limited to a 1-party system. No two political parties are expected to behave in the same manner or share the same ideologies. Your attempt at divisive tactics is not new, and sadly lame. And if you think the papers do not speak ill of WP or Chiam whenever the opportunity arises, then obviously your reading has been rather limited. B)

LKY can cling on to his TIM award to the grave if he likes, but that will not stop people from critisizing him. Furthermore, he would not be able to sue from his grave, people will then be emboldened to say the truth about the man - a fake champion of democracy who used democracy as a guise to get elected and when he has consolidated his power, shed his sheep skin to reveal a dictator within. A dictator, and like all dictators, cannot accept any form of criticism and spare no effort in crushing any forms of dissent.
• Sylvester Goh
These are my replies to some of mahjong king's questions. I am not anawering on behalf of Dr Chee but as a voter who depended on the press for information and also having attended Dr Chee's election rally in 2001.

Q1) When Chee joined SDP, he was still a lecturer in NUS (not NTU). He constantly criticised the PAP while still holding the post until he got a warning from NUS. But he persisted, and was terminated. No reason was given. Dr Chee protested by going on a hunger strike and he became more vocal in his criticism. NUS then announced that Chee will be sacked, in other words, no compensation. It was then all charges about misuse of funds came rolling out in the press. Several letters werwe also exchanged. The decision was upheld anyway.

Q2) Mr Chiam was ousted as he disagreed with Dr Chee's hunger strike. But it was not Dr Chee who ousted him but the members of the SDP voted to sack Chiam. Chee was subsequently voted by the members to become the Sec-general of the SDP.

Q3) Admittedly it was Chee who reaped what he sowed. He and Ling How Doong had alleged that the govt did not really provide any medical susidy at all, misleading the the public. The whole debate was telecast live and SDP could not prove their point. That was enough for Chee to lose credibility. I was also disappointed.

Q4) Mahjong King said "please remember that nobody can force a man of strong conviction to do anything", implying that Chee lied by claiming that he was forced to apologise. I remembered MM Lee and Goh CT issuing an ultimatum to Chee "Apologise or we will sue!" If this is not forcing, then what is it?

Dr Chee apologised (I was at his rally when he apologised). But LKY subsequently charged "APOLOGY NOT SINCERE! THERE SHOULD BE NO "IFS" AND NO "BUTS". He proceded ahead to sue despite Chee having apologised. It was at this point that Chee withdrew his apology.

Q9) The Straits Times uncovered the NKF saga only becuse they were sued by NKF. Without the lawsuit, NKF could have made more millions now. Dr Chee's point is, how could the government not known or suspected anything fishy all these years, until SPH was sued?

As for the rest of mahjong king's questions, well, , let Dr Chee answer himself......
• Tian JIng
Goodness gracious that was the best speech I've ever seen for any political and I would pay to watch it recited live to LKY himself.

If anything, this episode in court only serves to show the insecurity of MM Lee against any dissenting views that would threaten his party. In the 70's and 80's, he used the ISD to eliminate his political threats, which we now know will not sit well with the general public. He now uses the Singapore court system and his party's reign on the mainstream media to beat Dr Chee and his party's ideals down. In time to come the general public's opinion will change, gradually just the same as public's opinion on the ISD.

In Hong Kong, where their economy is mostly made up of SMEs and tycoons are oft-made out of once odd job labourers, such restriction on the media would very much bring about vehement disagreement from the public.

Singapore's economy is often compared with Singapore's. Why not compare what kind of freedom they enjoy over there as well? When I went there in 2006, I had the privilege to witness the Democratic party first hand, their unwitheld liberty to campaign on the streets, at the junction of Hong Kong's Shenton Way equivalent, with party supporters giving out flyers. If PAP treats the electorate with any scant respect, it would not try so desperately to amend the election system such that there would be no outdoor campaigns during non-electoral periods. Hongkong's GDP is still higher than that of Singapore. The best part? They have no GST, which means their salary are higher and they arent bogged down by the 7% charge to their monthly salary.

Singaporeans are not blind to what the PAP is doing. With the advent of the Internet, PAP can no long hide what it is doing and there is no point trying to curb or control the new media. Proof of point is that I am typing this down in my National Service unit's computer, and openly doing so. For what it is, it would be far more shameful to remain quiet seeing how much injustice that has transpired in the court over the past 2 weeks than to come out openly to criticize the Lees for what the have done.

Young people DO actually have eyes to see what goes on behind all the state's newspaper tilt towards the ruling party, and this episode will definitely serve as a lesson to learn in 10, 20 years down the road when Singapore finally gets out of the grip that the Lees hold over this nation (which really belongs to all Singaporeans) that they converted into their own family company.

To MahjongKing,
Judges are appointed by PM.So they are beholden to their master.Do you think the judge will rule against the PM ? Remember MM Lee v Devan Nair case in Canada. If not Nair passed away, I think MM will have a tough battle. If court case in spore then no problem for your hero, understand ? So judges should be appointed by an independent party.

Guys, forget abt those creeps and their shallow remarks that are appearing here.

Its a strategy they seem to be employing. Asking questions and demanding answers to them, when they themselves aren't able to, or refuse to answer you guys questions.

Similar to, "going on the offensive to avoid being on the defensive". Isnt it something their 'idols' are doing as well?

Let those who enjoy posting nonsensical comments/questions continue doing so. It is you guys' rights, whether or not to believe/answer them.

I believe thats the foundation for SDP's beliefs. You guys have my admiration anyways.
• Gary Teoh
Sylvester Goh,
your answers are correct. I was at Jurong East rally in 2001.I know what was happening. I followed elections since Anson by election til 2006.What happened, those who are interested in politics should know.SMC getting lesser and lesser since 1988.It is difficult to fight pap.Election deposit increased to more than 13k....many many more obstacles......

Declassified british papers contradict LKY's account of Singapore's history in his memoir which is nothing more than propaganda that sings his own praises. LKY tried to rewrite history and hope history will remember him as a great statesman but now he will just be remembered as a liar.
• Paul - Spoken by a true patriot
LKY may boast of being the founding father of modern Singapore. Indeed I will not begrudge him of that. I will adapt Shakespeare and go so far as to acknowledge that 'he doth bestride this tiny island like a Burmese General.' He may have built it but he does not love it. He is all brain and no heart. A plotting mind appeals to those who exults in the baser human instincts. The son is a chip of the old block. He is far removed from the common people. He's as invisible to the man in the street as he was to other students in his final undergraduate year.

Dr Chee's speech will be remembered for his selflessness and his passion for the good of Singapore. He may live or die at the behest of the MM but it is clear to the rest of the thinking world that he loves his country more than the deluded and husk of an old man. Well spoken, Dr Chee and I pray that God will grant you the day when you will see Singapore ruled by a government with a heart.

Singaporeans are turning to the Internet, after the pro-government Straits Times refuseto publish honest anti PAP commentaries.
• Muttyfied
I have been a ‘blinded’ ardent follower of the incumbent for a good 20 years. Like most uninitiated pupils, I believed that only ‘dragonomics’ ruled the roast for Singapore’s success. Only recently I have started to see the negativity of the moneytheist attitudes of our leaders and am utterly disappointed that they have decided again to take the litigious route to silence their dissenters. If Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi were Singaporeans, the world would not have heard of a civil rights movement. I doubt Singapore would ever produce someone of historical importance whose contributions would benefit our world.

I chanced upon Dr Chee’s moving closing submission from his website where he beautifully put it in prose, ‘It is about what is just. It is about compassion and how we treat our fellow men. It is about freedom and human dignity.’ Dr Chee is leading a life that symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit which most Singaporeans are only spectators or reluctant participants to. I applaud his moral stand and his personal convictions, though I personally wished he had stood for elections like Minister Mentor had mentioned. As I too have found him extremely eloquent though his speeches and his published books and articles.

My sympathies to you Dr Chee but to take on the PAP machinery are next to impossible with their own brand paradox of freedom and order. It is rather unfortunate that you have been bankrupted and jailed on several occasions for this country and the ‘little people’ like me who live in it. I feel that Singapore is undeserving of you, a society unable to embrace humanity. Even subsidies for seat belts for school buses, food for the poor, medical fees are frowned upon. I sincerely fear for its future.
i have never seen the papers tainted mr chiam see tong or mr low of wp... what about sylvia lim of wp? she came out strong... persuasive... convicted in what she believed... never see any negative reports about her... why only dr chee so special? he cute is it?
Simple, Lee Kuan Yew is getting personal with Chee and directed his propaganda mouthpieces to act that's all.
• mahjongking - To Sylvester Goh
dear sylvester,

thanks for your reply... so are you a memeber of sdp? i have been asking people from sdp to answer my questions but so far nobody identified themselves... sigh... if you are one, just identified yourself...

i am not satisfied with your answer cause you cut and paste the truth...

A1) dr chee was terminated because he was caught misuing research funds to pay for postage on his wife's phd dissertation. yes, he went on a hunger strike but drank glucose daily... in fact, dr chee claimed that he did nothing wrong and that his boss, a dr vasoo fabricated evidence against him... dr chee was sued by dr vasoo and a few staff of nus for demation... guess what? dr chee did not went on trial to avoid being questioning... a man who knows he did nothing wrong will fight to defend his reputation and character... why dr chee didn't want to fight for his defence? is obvious...
Q2) Mr Chiam was ousted as he disagreed with Dr Chee's hunger strike. But it was not Dr Chee who ousted him but the members of the SDP voted to sack Chiam. Chee was subsequently voted by the members to become the Sec-general of the SDP.
A2) why did the members voted to sack dr chiam? who is the founder of sdp? come on... dun be naive just because the current sdp leadership claimed this and that... have you spoken to dr chiam and some of the ex-members about this? silly to just believe one side of the story... don't you want to hear from mr chiam who has proven over the years that he is a sound, logical and consistent political leader?

Q3) Admittedly it was Chee who reaped what he sowed. He and Ling How Doong had alleged that the govt did not really provide any medical susidy at all, misleading the the public. The whole debate was telecast live and SDP could not prove their point. That was enough for Chee to lose credibility. I was also disappointed.
A3) that is the pattern of dr chee... shoot first but no evidence to back what he claimed...
A4) why apologised at the first place if what you said is the truth? if you claimed that 17 billion was loaned to suharto, proved it! you will only apologized if what you said is untrue... dr chee is an adult, he knows he must be responsible for what he said... how can dr chee, a man with phd, who claimed to be speaking the truth, strong convictions be forced to say sorry? dr chee had so many opportunities to tell singapore and the court what he said is true about mr goh and mr lee... dun be silly...

Q9) The Straits Times uncovered the NKF saga only becuse they were sued by NKF. Without the lawsuit, NKF could have made more millions now. Dr Chee's point is, how could the government not known or suspected anything fishy all these years, until SPH was sued?
A9) straits times will not report the fishy things in nkf and be sued if they were controlled by the government... if the government knew as dr chee claimed, nkf will be told not to sue spf (controlled by government leh)... simple logic...
period...
• mahjongking - to Maximillian Chew
if the bodyguards barged in, charge them for contempt? the fact is LKY did not... if you free, go to subordinate courts and see how many people barged into courts daily... dr chee clearly was disobedience to a court of law by asking irrelevant questions... period...
• Andy - Reply to Mahjongking
Mahjongking- I guess you are a person who is fond of finding truth and not a paid staff who gets salary from tax payer's money and earn your living to post message here.

The answer to all your question is at least you get the taste of living in free society as long as you browse this site, don't you!! Whatever the message you send gets published...unaltered. Whatever the view or information you have and believe is true you can air it without fear. When people respond to your view with their own, you feel important, don't you!! That's democracy buddy...there you go with freedom of speech.

We might have difference in opinion, we bound to have that, but we are bound by humanity.

I have one question for you, would you be able to say all this on a Straits Times forum let alone in a PAP website, with any counterview what you want to say about this case, for example condemning / criticising the Singapore rulers. Try that and come back talk hear.
In that case, I give you a guarantee, you would be pursued and chased so vigorously by the regime, you will be a devout SDP guy but probably a bankrupt.

Your logic is warped. When Osama ordered his men to bomb up some places and did not physically do the dirty job himself, would that mean that Osama was innocent?

Lee Kuan Yew is the mastermind and is as guilty as his men who did the dirty work for him, if not more.

i think i just have had enough from mahjongking. People let's just all ignore his postings. He can carry on with his mahjong sessions till the cows come home.

or all the bombastic English written in this prose-like piece of fluff, Chee has failed to understand one simple word: Relevance.

In the context of assessing damages for his alleged defamation, I fail to see how all his words has any substance in proving that damage to the Lees' reputation was minimal, nor even any hint of dirt dug up over the accusations of alleged misconduct.

For all the time granted in court he has not shown any hard evidence proving the veracity of his accusations.

What a load of fluff. Chee should stop trying to settle his personal vendetta on the pretext of standing up for Singaporeans because what he has consistently done is to demolish Singapore's reputation to foreigners to advance his personal cause.
• Sylvester Goh
Mahjong King

Did I not mention that I am answering some of your questions only as an ordinary voter? Just because I am doing so, does that mean that I am an SDP member? Stop making stupid and senseless assumptions! At least I dare to identify myself? What about you?

As for your answers aiming at rebutting me, you don't seem able to read through my answers:

Q1) If Chee was really guilty of misuse of funds, why did this charge surface only a few months after the termination and Chee's protest? Take note: I am not saying Chee is defintely innocent. But this is a question that I would like someone to answer. As for "defending oneself in court", could you name me any opposition members winning any court case against a PAP MP?

Q2)You said:"mr chiam who has proven over the years that he is a sound, logical and consistent political leader?
No disrespect to Mr Chiam, but a capable leader will not be ousted by his own members. You are just singing alomg the PAP lines. Lest you think that I am anti-Chiam, I tell something. I have relatives residing in Potong Pasir and they had voted for Chiam consistently since 1984.

I mentioned that I am answering your questions based on what I read in the press, not by any SDP members! So don't come and tell me "silly to just believe one side of the story". If you have spoken to Chiam personally and know the true story, by all means, share it with us. I would appreciate that!

Q4) You claimed "how can dr chee, a man with phd, who claimed to be speaking the truth, strong convictions be forced to say sorry?" Who says a man with a PHD cannot be forced to say sorry? Have you forgotten? Even our great founding father LKY was forced to offer two unreserved apologies to Malaysia for his remarks about Johoe Bahru. This, despite the fact that he was labelled "Anak Haram" (bastard) by the protestors there!

As for your last question, let me state my stand. I was answering the question from what I understood from Chee's point of view. It does not mean that I agree with Chee. Please read my lines carefully.

One last reminder. While your articles ahve been so pro-PAP, I will not assume that you are a PAP mmember. I respect your views and am merely sharing with you my views. But don't make make baseless assumption that people who do not share the same views as you must be an SDP member. Please, grow up!
• mahjongking - to sylvester goh
brave... you are sylvester goh... goh what? goh ah kow or goh kum gong? my real identity is indiana jones... you believe? come on... if you want to identify and claim to be very brave, put your full name on this website... come on, 95% of the writers here don't put their full name... don't be silly by challenging me that...

if you are not an sdp member, why get so angry with my views... you got yours, i got mine... you write yours, i write mine... what is your problem?

if you are not sdp member, relax lah... why so angry with me?

are you csj in disguise? or family memeber? relative? a close friend?
• underdogs
Firstly I must commend and salute CSJ, his fellow comarades, Ravi and JBJ.
For their strong conviction and principle to stand up for the truth.
All these years the amount of propangada the local media has distorted the truth with their bias one sided reporting is so unbeliveable.

I strongly agree and "Quote what joe Liberty said "
This is a very sad day for Singapore as history will eventually pass the final verdict.

Keep up the good the fight you may have lost the battle but not the war.
Keep exposed all the lies they throw at you.The truth will set you free.
• Sylvester Goh
Goh what? I will put my real name if you dare put yours. When I say I am not SDP member, you now ask if I am CSJ or his family member in disguise. You think people are like you? If CSJ dares to challenge the MM in court, you think he will behave like you, hiding behind pseudonyms like Mahjong King and Indianna Jones? It's people like you that even PAP will despise, even if you are speaking up for them! I don't think the PAP will want to have people like you either as secret supporter. You accuse CSJ of being personal towards LKY. Now isn't your latest article getting personal as well? We are supposed to be sharing views about local politics. But you went on to suspect that I am an SDP member and even CSJ? Reading the context of your article made me realise that I am wasting my time on someone with a shallow brain. You belong to the kind that if a PAP minister were to fart into your face, you will still say "smells nice, because it's from the PAP!"

I dare to use my name because even if a PAP MP were to read my views, he will at least try to see things from my point of view before deciding whether to agree or not. I have attended meet the people sessions conducted by the PAP MPs and so far, they have been very objective in hearing my views even though they do not agree. But they never ask me "Are you an opposition supporter?"

Go ahead and rebut this article but as long as your comments turn personal, I shall not waste my time on you....
• Sylvester Goh
And by the way, there is one point I agree with you, that is, don't be silly challenging you.....someone who only dares to hide behind pseudonyms!

If only we had a leader of Dr Chee's calibre ........
• davidtmt - A spook in our midst.
mahjongking.

You actually witnessed the entire trial
in court? That's really interesting.

As for the questions, it was obviously directed at us netizens, and not Dr.Chee or his party.

Questions should not be set as accusations unless you want a debate. That aside, let's treat your disguised assertions and my point by point rebuttals to it's merits as friendly discourse at a coffee shop talk cock session.

1.RHIP-rank has its privileges. That's a lesson most of us learned in life especially so during national service. Do you really believe that nobody in positions of power and authority ever abused that? The difference is in the quotient. I want all the saints in the world to ponder that. Who can,and would want to rummage through the skeletons in our closets? Would you feel compelled to destroy someone for committing something that amounts to nothing more than a misdemeanour? As to the question about integrity in high office, give people some credit to make sound judgements. Don't exude such contempt.

2.While I hold Mr. Chiam in high esteem
for his determination and passion, sadly, adroitness is not one of his virtues. That quality is something that make or break a politician. When you can be usurped, then you do not deserve to be the leader in the first place. Ask any man who still call the shots after 50 years at the top.

3.When you play chess with someone whose ability you have very little regard for, you can afford to sacrifice a few pawns 'to amuse abang'. But sometimes, one can lose a sense of proportion by giving someone a black eye even after winning effortlessly.

Before I tackle questions 4, 5, 6, and 7, allow me to share and extol the virtues of the Chinese classic "Romance Of The Three Kingdoms'. In it, I found the answers to the many questions I had about the world we live in. It covers every topic under the sun ie; politics, friendship, love, family, morals, virtues, strategies in warfare that correspond to what we need to do to survive etc, etc. And I was always wondering why my chinese educated friends are more astute in handling life's problems. Why this book is not made compulsory reading for our young? Oops! a rhetorical question.

4.Go read 'Romance Of The Three Kingdoms'.

5.Go read 'Romance Of The Three Kingdoms'.

6.In this aspect, Dr.Chee and I share a kindred spirit. If I was in his place, I'll do the same. I would temper them young. I'll explain to them that I'm doing it for them, for their future. I'm fighting to redeem their honor. That's the samurai spirit somebody surmised to be the reason behind the success of the nation of Japan.

7.Go read 'Romance Of The Three Kingdoms'.

8.I swear I've not heard about what he had said or claimed. But I have this to say. Poor Durai, he thought just because he drove a German car, he can move like a German tank.

9.Some of us whores do have a conscience you know. We don't do kinky stuff. It's just laying on our back and closing our eyes.
