Lee Kuan Yew barges into courtroom Print E-mail

Singapore Democrats

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew barged into the courtroom this afternoon when Mr Lee Hsien Loong was being cross-examined by the defence in a defamation case brought on by the Lees against SDP and its leaders.

Before the senior Lee made his unannounced appearance together with at least seven bodyguards, the door of the courtroom was flung open by one of his securities who had quickly rushed in front of Justice Belinda Ang who was hearing the case at Court 4B.

Judge Ang and all the others present were clearly startled as to what was going on before they spotted a hunched Mr Lee Kuan Yew slowly made his way into the courtroom to take his seat next to SDP chairman Mr Gandhi Ambalam. But quickly, an alert lawyer of the plaintiff realized the unintended proximity and showed Mr Lee to another chair further away.

While all this drama was taking place, Mr Lee Hsien Loong was in the witness stand, making everyone wonder whether there is any truth to the maxim that "everyone before the law is equal" or some more equal than others.

After the dust has settled, so to speak, and some semblance and sanity returned, Dr Chee Soon Juan objected to the way the Lee Sr had made his entry. Dr Chee repeated asked Judge Ang to ask Mr Singh to introduce those who had barged in and to state what their roles were in relation to the hearing.

This is normal procedure. The defendants had to introduce Mr Gandhi Ambalam and Mr Chia Ti Lik, and to ask the Judge permission to let them sit in to help take notes. Despite the repeated appeals by Dr Chee to Judge Ang to ask the plaintffs counsel to do the same with Mr Lee's group, she did not.

Dr Chee pointed out that the Court should be blind to the status of the parties. For Mr Lee to enter the courtroom with his entourage in such a haughty manner was completely unacceptable.

There was also PAP MP, Mr Hri Kumar, was role was just to sit beside Mr Lee Kuan Yew. He was certainly not connected to the case and he did not seek permission from the Judge to be present.

Dr Chee also noted, besides the seven bodyguards, there were at least another ten unidentified persons who were already seated. Who these people were, and in what capacity they were present, asked Dr Chee. Getting no response from the bench, Dr Chee moved on to question the right of Mr Lee Kuan Yew to sit in while the cross-examination of Mr Lee Hsien Loong was taking place.

Dr Chee said this was because the affidavits that the two plaintiffs had submitted in support of their claims for damages were almost identical and that the questions that he would be posing to Lee Jr would be similar in nature.

However, the judge overruled the strenuous objections raised by Dr Chee and asked the SDP Counsel, Mr Ravi, to continue his cross-examination of Mr Lee Hsien Loong that was interrupted by Lee Sr's entry.

On several occasions, Mr Davinder Singh, counsel for the plaintiffs, rose to object the line of Mr Ravi's questioning of Mr Lee and reminded the defence counsel that he was a court official like him.

This prompted Dr Chee to remind the Judge that Mr Singh had the habit of throwing in subtle threats like this to Mr Ravi throughout the hearing in chambers, and now he was at it again in open court.

Later, Dr Chee, after establishing the fact that the two Lees had embarked on the lawsuit in their personal capacity, asked if Mr Lee had taken leave of absence from his duty as prime minister and whether there was anyone acting for him while he was appearing in court. Mr Davinder Singh immediately objected. However, when pushed, Mr Lee admitted that he did not take leave.

Dr Chee clarified that it was because Mr Lee had stated in his sworn affidavit, that he was a man with “unflinching fidelity to integrity” and as such he expected answers from Mr Lee and not interruptions from Mr Singh.

Almost throughout the entire cross-examination, Mr Singh kept “jumping up like a jackrabbit”, noted Dr Chee.

Dr Chee then read out a newspaper report of an earlier defamation suit brought against him in September 2004 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Goh Chok Tong in which Mr Singh had noted that Dr Chee had been running down Singapore and the plaintiffs for years. Dr Chee had been carping about the lack of democracy.

Mr Singh, as defence counsel for both Mr Lee and Mr Goh, then had said: “In October 2001, he challenged the plaintiffs to answer his questions. He said the public had a right to know. He now has the opportunity of a lifetime—a chance to cross-examine the plaintiffs and extract answers to his pressing questions. What does he do? He flees.”

Turning to Judge Ang, Dr Chee said now was the chance for him to cross-examine the plaintiff and to elicit answers to those pressing questions that Mr Singh had accused Dr Chee of avoiding in the past. Dr Chee said now that he had been given this chance, Mr Singh kept preventing him from posing such questions of great public interest to Mr Lee.

The cross-examination of Mr Lee Hsien Loong continues tomorrow.

eh sdp, your few "minsutes" damn long leh.
• concern - Abit concern about the authenticity of your report
Hi, though I never really support the gov and their un-democratic national directives, I am kind of skeptic of what you have posted about todays court incident. Sounds like its 'flowered' with exaggeration. Could you please post the real court hearing accounts. I dont care how the government is useless, you guys at SDP should not stoop so low in this matter. shhessh.... The TRUTH please. Not conspiracy story and theories.
• Muhammad Shamin Bin Mohamed Si - May you have a "good" end Mr. Lee.
When I looked at the suffering Suharto went through before he died, the first person that came to my mind was "beloved" Mr LEE. I wonder what he would suffer from before he dies? People who are arrogant at his age hardly become humble.

Basket, write so much cock but never tell us what exactly was said and asked in court.
• greyheyn
To concern,

You have already decided that 'SDP stoop so low' and 'flowered' the whole incident. So what is your point of 'abit concern'? The 'TRUTH' please.

You want the truth? Then ask Lee Kuan Yew, Lee Hsien Loong and those monkeys to stop hiding everything behind the judge's chamber. Do a televised live uncensored broadcast. Let the whole Singapore see how much integrity and honesty the FamiLEE has. That way, you can even record it down and examine the whole proceeding at your own leisure.

The FamiLEE wouldn't do it? Why? Something to hide? And is that why the need to hide in judge's chamber every time?

Belinda Ang is a disgrace to her family and children.
• KY - Mistakes..
It is certainly a good question to ask who covers their duties as PM/MM while they fight a "personal" case. Are they so free?

Where is the SM? Is he covering the PM/MM? Where is he? Isn't the SM supposed to guide the PM?
• confucius
Hahaha! Really behave like mini emperor leh! I bet Judge Ang and Davinder Singh must be damn nervous in front of their master.

Anyway the open court doesn't sound like an open court. A likely tactic will be for the Lees to fill the place up so that no independent observers can be around.
• Yoong Kheong - Sensationalised
I would agree with concern that the article is sensationalised and exaggerated.

Perhaps a more neutral tone of writing would increase the credibility of the article...
• Kai Xiong
If you're really concerned about the truthfulness of SDP's report, why don't you head down to the Supreme Court early tomorrow yourself and fight for a place in the gallery with all the uncles and aunties from RCs and other 'grassroots' organisations?
• Michael Chan - LKY owns Singapore, that's why!
Lee Kuan Yew behaved that way with his dozen bodyguards in tow simply because he thinks he owns the whole country, Courts and all. Poor Judge Ang was put in a very difficult position with the abrupt entry of her boss's (CJ) boss's(Minister of Law) boss's (PM) Daddy (and MM), the Great Supremo himself. Probably she was already shivering in her pants or rather, dress. So how not to ignore Dr Chee's requests and pleas ? I doubt she was even listening to Dr Chee...alamak, her two ultimate Bosses 2 ranks above her immediate boss the CJ are in her Court for real. Do you expect her to uphold fairplay and a level playing field? So overwhelmed, she must have kept blinking her eyes and looking at Davindar Singh's direction for help and guidance? The drama continues....
• kuchingwee - Report The Truth
Hi, I was present in court hearing and what was reported here is not the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I am sceptical of the reporting in this website now. Please ask relevant questions for the plaintiffs to answer and not throw in irrevelant questions and rubbish, wasting everybody's time. It is your once in a lifetime opportunity to x-examine the Lees and show your superior intelligence, after all you are Dr.Chee and not the plain Lees. Please do not fall sick tomorrow and be democratic not to postpone the proceedings which we had waited long enough to watch your superior performance for all us to see.

i am there too.dun think i see u .u r the one talking rubbish.u r the one , u kuchingwee. what talk and post is the truth.
• Fighter - Guts
Dr. Chee: You got the guts.

In the presence of LKY you can still stay cool and stick to the court formality to ask the judge to introduce LKY. You are not a lawyer but then it is your advantage bec. then Lees' lawyer cannot apply the same tactics as to Ravi: "reminded the defence counsel that he was a court official like him."

As I always tell people that there are only three types of Singaporean males:

1. Those who live in Singapore and dare not to speak against the corruption of the Lees have "no balls".

2. Those (like me) who do not like the Lees but dare not fight them head-on and run away (emigrated) have "one balls".

3. Those who stay and fight the Lees have "two balls".

Dr. Chee you created the 4th type...you have the "two well-balanced Kung Fu balls". I truly respect you. You ancestors should be proud of you. You bring the "world class" politics to Singapore.

As I predicted in the last few emails to SDP, the Lees' lawyer will "block" most questions directed to LHL and even LKY. LHL does not know how to remain cool. If you have rapid questions directed at him his "sissy" and "cancer" will surface out. His father will even interject and speak on behalf of the son. Yes in the Kangaroo court this thing can happen. Expect the unexpected.

The judge would then stop all questioning and pass immediate judgement and you and you sister sent to jail immediately for attempting to post questions which are designed to "shame" the plaintiff. Also the questions have produce undue emotions distress to the plaintiff. As for the latter reason, Ravi could have his lawyer suspended.

It sounds silly but let me remind you this is Kangaroo court. "EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED."

I can also predict that the judge will not stop Lees' lawyers but will do the opposite to you, your sister and Ravi.

When LKY answers your questions please remind him to answer your questions in a Yes or NO manner so that it gives him no opportunities to make long speeches to prove his self-righteous but irrelevant to the questions.

Ask him about many years ago the huge discount he and his kins go from the purchases of the condominium units in Nissam Road. Tay Laing Hung touched on that sensitive issue and got himself into trouble.

As for you, you are already in deep trouble so you have nothing to loose. But you have the open court and the internet. I am sure you have observers from other countries in court to witness the proceedings. So go for it.

You have spend at least $500,000 and losing of two income (you and your wife of at least Sin $250,000 per yr) and this is pay back time for you.

LKY might have a stroke while in the witness box. Could be a fake one to gain sympathy for "you" and lead the pro-PAP Singaporeans blame you.

Many Singaporeans are rejoicing to see LKY being questioned as a "commoner". Remind the judge not to address them as MM or PM..just the plain "Mr." And for you, you must be addressed as "Dr."

Count to "10" and keep cool.

Nice reply kuchingwee.
SDP is always a firm believer in the truth and always stood by the common citizens. I really hated the gov guts but at the same time the opposition parties (including SDP) should also hold their diginity by doing the right things and monitor the gov's directions.
'Flowering' the actual court hearings only leads to doubts and concerns about SDP's principles and objectives. (hidden agendas?)
So I plead with SDP, be truthfully. This court hearing is not a joke. Its a 'once a lifetime' to GRILL the 2 Lees. (make sure its relevant to the court topic... dont anyhow use the Indon billion $ loan conspiracy)

By the way..... dont apply for MC or get yourself hurt or overslept excuse or fly to Myammar. I will be disappointed if you do that, thousands and thousands of opposition citizens will cuss you.

What was written was quite accurate of what had happened in court today. Why so many people suddenly jump out at SDP accusing them of not reporting factually?

Can it be Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong are very scare now? It is common to see PAP Internet Brigade creating smear campaigns on the oppositions in Sammyboy Alfresco Coffeeshop forum, so I am not surprised that it happen here as well.

I will like to ask all readers to listen to both side of the stories before judging. Be rational, be a thinking Singaporean with your own mind and not a propaganda filled one. The best thing will be, go to the court and see for yourself.

Best regards,
Albert

P.S I am extremely disappointed that the judge did not react when Lee Kuan Yew clearly showed contempt of court when he and his bodyguards crash in like they own the place. Maybe she IS scared of offending him. Sigh.
• jason
Albert,
that's not the point. People want to know the facts, not flowery rhetoric.

By facts, I mean what exactly are the questions Dr Chee asked LHL? Which ones were struck out by the judge? Which ones did Singh object to? And most importantly, how LHL responded to them.

FACTS that the report are awfully short on. Really disappointing.
• Greyheyn
To Concern :

You have now decided that that SDP is a firm believer in truth. So what is your point again? - has SDP 'stoop so low' and 'flowering' the whole incident even though you have said it is a firm believer in truth? And whether you 'hated' or 'hate' the government's gut?
• Albert
jason,

These people spent an entire day at court, let them rest as they need to be at court again tomorrow. I am sure a good full detailed report will be out soon.

Best regards,

• C J - Touching the Untouchables
This is so sad, as I already know what kind of outcome this will all eventually amount to.
Dr Chee is fighting the Mafia in their own court and within their own judicial system tailored for them.
However, I applaude the bravado and steadfastness of Dr Chee.
• g_e - Watch - and weep.
It's extraordinary, truly extraordinary.

Old man's towering ego has finally got the better of him and caused him to make the kind of dreadful PR gaffe he would never have made in his prime. He has just gifted his detractors with a gigantic stick to beat him with. And he's just shown the rest of the civilised world (if it was ever in doubt) how a true despot behaves at home.

Imagine contemptuously gate-crashing a High Court session like a swaggering, geriatric John Wayne, giving the judge no 'face', and making a mockery of all customary court procedure and manners! What on earth can he have been thinking? The cries of "hau lien" must be rippling round the nation at lightning speed. Even the PM of Great Britain would not have dared behave in such a high-handed way and risk the shame of being thrown out by an outraged judge.

I feel slightly sorry for Honourable Judge Belinda Ang being caught between Godzilla and the deep blue sea, but not a lot. Her reputation now lies in tatters - as does Lee's - but she made her bed and must now lie in it.

LKY has evidently lost the plot and is visibly losing his grip by the day. One wonders if he's still quite compos mentis.

Irrespective of the outcome of this travesty of justice, the SDP is winning.
• mike Chan - IMPORTANT TO BE MORE SPECIFIC!
To Concern and Kuchingwee......It's very important to be more specific about your allegations that the main report here by SDP (read CSJ and his Sr aides) had been exaggerated or even falsely reported. I was not there. If you were there, pl clarify 2 simple happenings said to have occurred:
1 As described vividly, did LKY and his 7 goons BARGE (noisily and rudely push their way in) into the Court OR NOT?
2 Did CSJ address the Judge immed to object and query the presence of LKY as described in length by him above?
I have always assumed SDP's postings here to be 99% accurate and unexaggerated. You have now cast a doubt in my mind.
Convince me otherwise now of my faith in the accuracy of this SDP post and I will stop
commenting here forthwith.
• elitocracy - Transcripts
For those who clamoured for a more detailed report on the court proceedings .. Please remember we can always get the transcripts from the court later.

It will be a detailed, blow by blow account of the day's activities and it will be official.

No point asking SDP to do that. It is not their job (neither will the PAP if they were in the same shoes) and the doubters will not believe even if they do.

I don't know why CSJ had to ask th judge why MM Lee can enter the courtroom.

Of course, MM can enter the court room and so can anyone.

Why must CSJ ask such question as this is an open court and whether the court is already hearing the case, public can still enter the court room.

I get very pissed off when people ask the judge such question.

I go to court very often and know about the court rules.

CSJ, pls don't attack the government irrelevantly.

Taking on democracy as a coverup to attack the Singapore government, Singaporeans are suspicious of what hidden agenda the SDP holds.

Are they working for foreign powers against Singapore? Use democracy as a war cry?

who knows?

I believe it is true that the despot gatecrashed the court, He thought the court belonged to him, he is the founder of spore,he can do whatever he likes, nobody is going to stop him,he behaves like an emperor gangster. If he walks in New York Street,he is no body.
• kuchingwee - Sick Case
This is the sick case from the start. The lawyer is sick, Dr is sick, sister is sick and now the grandfather is also sick. If not for the woman on the Bench who is not sick, this case will never see the daylight. I do not who will fall sick next. I am bringing dozens of panadol, aspirin, postan, for the court hearing. Anybody who is sick, raise your hand and I shall give u the pill to continue in the hearing of this sick case. I hope the judgment is not sick and settle the matter once and for all. It is sick to follow this hearing as a lot of wayang going on in court.

It is standard procedure for anyone entering a court, while court is in session, to bow to the presiding judge.

I'll like to know whether in this incident, did LKY bow to the judge or did, instead, goodness gracious, did the judge bow to LKY?

4 words: You're getting it WRONG.

Do it the right way and get the support of the people.

This case is, in my opinion, landmark and important no matter what side of the political spectrum you support.

Not one person has talked to me about this at the work place and outside...

I am very saddened by the people's unwillingness and lack of care for what is going on...

It is sobering however to find online that this is quite a hot topic.

People should learn to speak out more.
There is nothing wrong with being vocal about your political opinions.
I just wish there will be a day that comes when we can all have an open dialogue about pressing issues...
