Re: "Respecting human rights especially within its own borders is therefore a must, not a luxury or Western invention as the PAP has distortedly claimed."

Again, I agree. Naturally.

Article 12 Section IV (Fundamental Liberties) of the Constitution guarantees the legal equality of all citizens, but doesn't extend this equality to LGBTIs.

The same Article, as with other Articles in Section IV, is in turn based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights to which Singapore is a signatory.

If the government of any signatory country wishes to make the claim that human rights is a Western obsession, and not a legal entitlement that has been universally agreed upon, then that government is indeed being ignorant and dishonest, as well as engaging in power play for ts own sake; they should be questioned about their own signatory status.

Finally, isn't it also a curious thing that the proponents of the most rabidly anti-gay agenda - the Christian Taliban that takes its direction from its American counterpart - is also of Western origin?

Charles, there must be a reason that you chose to run this article on the SDP website. Perhaps you picked the venue that felt would be most amenable to your message.

As for this statement:

Re: "There is apparently a lack of motivation, on the part of both the ruling party and the Opposition, to woo the "pink vote"."

I would have to agree.

I don't think many - even those in politics - realize that the "pink vote" does not consist exclusively of LGBTIs; it includes our friends, family members, and other political allies who outnumber us by many to one.

This has already been borne out in many other countries especially in the pre-rights era of any one country; this is a potentially large vote bloc.

Not only that, political studies has indicated that for a significant portion of the electorate, voting for any party is a matter of habit. What this could mean is a longer term voter loyalty by this same bloc.

I believe that the SDP is indeed very well positioned to effect the wooing of the pink vote.

May I suggest that you also run this article in websites like fridae.com, but I would also explain for the purposes of the audience there that the Young Democrats is the youth wing of the SDP, and that the SDP has already taken a pro-gay rights position.

Thank you for this writeup.
