Free Gopalan Nair! Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 June 2008
Singapore Democrats

A group of activists and SDP members gathered outside the Central Police Station at Cantonment Road and held a vigil for Mr Gopalan Nair who is under detention for allegedly sending emails insulting the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General.

Mr Nair, a former Singaporean and now US citizen, was arrested last Saturday evening in his room at the Broadway Hotel at Serangoon Road.

He had posted on his blog comments about Mr Lee Kuan Yew using the legal system to achieve his political aim. Mr Nair, however, says that he did not send email to the AG and SG.

Mr Nair has been remanded by the police for investigations and his counsel Mr Chia Ti ik has not been able to see him. US embassy officials are said to be keeping a close watch on the matter.

The SDP is concerned that Mr Nair will be put under duress to make self-incriminating statements. The Singapore Democrats call on the police to expedite their investigations and charge Mr Nair if they have any evidence. He should then be released on bail. Until then, the prisoner should have access to counsel.

Such denial of access to counsel is an abomination of the criminal justice system which the supposedly First World Government should be ashamed of.

The activists gathered outside the police station from 7:30 pm. A few new faces joined the group to offer moral support. One of them, who is back in Singapore for a holiday, said he had been following events on the SDP website said he wanted to come down to show his support.

Mr Nair's arrest has been reported widely by news agencies. The SDP understands that some of the lawmakers in the US have been alerted to the situation.

The group dispersed at 11 pm.

My boyfriend read his blog. He said he has no respect for any Singaporean except the SDP. So why should be support him? Will he ask President Bush to launch Operation Singapore Freedom?

Why don't you read and form your own opinion instead of always making references to your boyfriend?
  • Pastor Tan H.C - Righteousness Exalts A Nation
I have been following the cries, mourning and desires of the people of Singapore, and especially the opposition cries, mourning and desires that have gone to the very throne room of heaven.

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

Esther 4:14 For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance shall arise for the Jews from elsewhere, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows but that you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this and for this very occasion?

Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Dr. Chee, you are in my prayers and have my full support.
  • Derek
I read his blog... This guy has got no respect for Singaporeans. No wonder he never won any elections.

This loser should juz go back to the U.S.A as a quitter.
  • Need for Justice - Gopalan was FRAMED !!!
According to Gopalan, he only post stuffs on his blog. HE DID NOT SEND THE EMAIL TO BELINDA.

I believed and trust Gopalan, because he has always been forthright and honest. If you read his blogs, he was challenging LKY. It was not about the judge. Gopalan is also a lawyer, and he knows his limitation. He is primarily a blogger and does not send emails, as there is no need to. Thousands of people read his blog each day.

However, someone was trying to FRAME him. They could not find a good reason to detain him, so that came up with trumph up charges of him sending email, and threathening a judge. That is not true. What "threats" did he send? If so, the police should produce the email and the so called threat? All we know is that Gopalan says he did not do it, but the 154th keep on saying that he did. The 154th did not even report his side of the story that he did not send the email.

Everything is really lopsided. Can any reader outside Singapore help? WHO CAN HELP?
  • Max Chew - The 2 Chee siblings were at the virgil last night
I can spot Dr CSJ and sister Ms CSC in the 2nd photo taking part in the virgil for blogger Gopalan Nair last night. Just imagine, these 2 brave democrats are heading for Queenstown Prison for 10-12 days today at 12noon for their crime of "contempt of court" and YET they turn up last night at the virgil to protest the detention of another fellow democrat in a lock-up.
What brave altruistic souls we have as SDP leaders.
I hope Mother kangaroo and her advisors sleep well tonight.
  • Chew - To Claire C and Derek
I don't read Lee Kuan Yew's blog, I am not aware he have any. But one thing I know, is that Lee Kuan Yew and his PAP cronies are cowards and dare not fight any elections on fair and equal footings.

They are so incapable and incompetence that despite placing all sorts of restrictions on oppositions and suing the ass off them, denying half of all eligible voters the chance to vote, as well as using tax-payers money to buy votes in form of dividends, estate upgrading etc., they only managed to get 66% out of those who got to vote.

Even Saddam Hussien did better at 99% for every election and he didn't even have to buy votes. You two should wake up, or just shut up.
  • Claire C
Well I agree with Derek. He fought in a SMC (not the crappy GRC) and lost. And he whines about being prosecuted. The US has been torturing prisoners in Cuba and he supports that sort of country?

I love my boyfriend and agree with his opinions.

What's this Operation Singapore Freedom? Is it going to be like Operation Coldstore Mark Two? Should be really successful then since we have a flood of communist FTs from the PRC here. Will it raise our GDP?

Ask your imaginary boyfriend what he thinks next time you see him. He ought to know since you say he's a PSC Scholar. And his daddy's rich. And his Mama's good-looking.

And if you screw the citizens of Singapore, you get paid millions? Is that what you are saying?
  • LIM TUNG HEE - Of dogs' poo and lice
Why is the whole Poolice Force spending so much effort on Gopalan Nair's personal criticism of the judiciary when our national security is at stake with the disappearance of Mas Selamat?
Is Gopalan Nair a "bigger threat" than Mas Selamat? If so, our citizens need to know.
The worst thing the SPF can do to the nation is to mishandle a situation that puts Singapore in disrepute internationally. Silencing one critic of the system will only expose the issue for international scrutiny.
How our "system" is viewed outside this island will depend on how the "system" execute this little critique.....

    Reply to derek,

Winning a 'big by-election' in 2006 by means of unfairness and injustices is a shame and totally unacceptable.

Winning a 'big by-election' in 2006 by means of no press freedom and bias is another act of kiasu
    at it highest level.

My dear Derek, I suggest you should read more political news from all sources especially Dr Chee website except "PAP times".

    A reply to Claire C,

Do you know what type of prisoners in Cuba being prison for? Are they political activists? Or are they terrorists with an evil intention of killing the innocents?

    Another reply to Claire C,

If Lee Kuan Yew and his fellows croonies behave and act like Saddam Hussein, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-il.

    They are all dictators!

I think it means freeing Singapore from the regime it's under. America has always overthrown dictatorships. So why not overthrow Singapore?

But also remember GN noted on his site that he has no respect for any Singaporean execept old Chee. So why should we support him? Will he be a capable leader if he can eventually run Singapore?
  • Henry Windgates
Looks like Claire C, Derek and Mike here are still living in self-denial on the fact that we are given fewer salaries and yet the government still demands hefty sums of money from our pockets. Definitely something wrong here!

Though Gopalan Nair may be an American now but at least he's got the balls to come back to Singapore and fight for our rights and free us from the exploitation of the judiciary system. Freedom Forver!

  • Puzzled - 2 facts
    I know 2 facts:

    1. Gopalan never send email to AG etc.
    2. Gopalan never chanllenge police to arrest him. He just challenge Lee to sue him.

    But report otherwise. :s :woohoo:
  • JJ - re: Gopalan was FRAMED !!!
Hello need for justic.Pls read his blog carefully and slowly before you make comment.
  • reservist_corporal
Claire C, Derek and Mike are absolutely right, of course. Just like Boxer the horse in Animal Farm, the motto of every Singaporean should be "I Will Work Harder" and "Mr H.L. & son are always right".

Long Live The Emperor. May he bestow on them the honours they so richly deserve. I wonder what kudos they'll get from the powers that be for their valiant efforts to convert the apostate masses on this forum.

And so? Why doesn't Bush invade? Why didn't former US Presidents invade? Why Aren't we facing UN Sanctions?
  • Hawk Eye - To Mike
From your comments, can see that you are a potential PAPpy dog. Why stain this web site?

Gopalan did not insult Singapore and he never will. Its his tactis to lure the govt into owning up.

Why i say so? Singapore is too small and its too politically dark over here. We do not have human rights and our grand parents all listened to what PAP says. Now the govt is abusing this trust to gain profit for themselves. What can we do?

It will be best if the world can hear our cries. And the key to the world, is Mr Gopalan Nair.
  • Hawk Eye - TO: 2 sets of law
I agree with you. What can our govt really do? They did nothing much but only knows how to live on our money with the high taxes and GST.

Its like "I give you a candy but i demand you to give me your candy shop"!

Look at Pedra Branca case. We didn't even totally won the island but needs to share with other country. Despite we've got a "sea angel" looking after the island for so long!
  • PAP's mouthpiece - Highest paid law minister shan
Minister of Law Shan - has to justify to his PAP masters that he deserves the $M dollar salary he is getting with bouses!

He is a great mouthpiece of PAP and will come up with any laws to suit them.

No integrity! Shame! Shame! Big Bullies!

Well, i've seen the pattern. Its always like that. Whenever the SPF solves small crime cases like theft, robbery, they unshamelessly claim credit by printing it on papers, crime watch. e.t.c

But when it comes to MAS Selamat case... their mouths are shut! For this instance, Gopalan is an easier target mah, won't "luan lai". So they also "seng nang" lor. MAS Selemat will bomb their family leh!
