In the recent defamation suit hearing to assess damages, Mr Lee Kuan Yew testified in court that the President of the International Bar Association (IBA) had written to the Law Society of Singapore praising the judiciary here.
This letter was apparently written following the organisation's annual conference held in Singapore in September last year.
The following is what Mr Lee said in court:
"Your honour, the International Bar Association decided to honour Singapore and hold its annual conference in this city and you [Dr Chee] were given an opportunity to present your case, with your complaint that Singapore lack the rule of law. There were some 3000 lawyers there.
I think they left Singapore with a very different impression from what you have projected because we have a letter from the President of the International Bar Association to the organisers, namely the Law Society of Singapore, how successful the meeting was and how impressed they were by the standards they found to obtain in the judiciary - " (see here also)
But the IBA has confirmed to the SDP that there was no such letter. According to the IBA its president did not write such a letter. The Law Society of Singapore has also denied that it has received any such letter from the IBA.
An IBA official said: "If there is another source of this letter, we do not know about it."
Mr Lee gave this evidence in the witness box during cross-examination by Dr Chee Soon Juan on 27 May 08.
The SDP will seek legal advice on this latest development.
In a related matter, Mr Lee's press secretary wrote to the Wall Street Journal stating that Dr Chee had called Singapore leaders "murderers, robbers, child molesters" and "rapists" in open court.
Dr Chee clearly said no such thing and has written to the newspaper challenging the Minister Mentor to produce the records showing that he (Dr Chee) did. (See here).
He was testifying under oath. Therefore, this surely amounts to perjury.
Please notify the presiding judge Blenda Ang to pass down the punishment as soon as possible. :-)

Maybe he did
- not from the International BAR Association but from the International BADMINTON Association (IBA) praising the judiciary for its stance on foreign imports, not finding them guilty of freeloading and of lacking in morality
after these very talented FTs abused Singapore's resources to go travel the world to play in tournaments big and small
(which explains their impossibly high world rankings, having played more than exponents from resource-poor countries the likes of DPRK could ever do, for instance),
win prize monies which they pocket, masuk dalam themselves (while still drawing shamelessly high allowances vis-a-vis top-ranking PRC and world counterparts)
before they would finally give up Singapore citizenships to comfortably retire in the old country from where they came with the 'loot' from their years in Singapore.
Or was it the International BOXING Association (IBA)? The International BAR Association (for Intoxicated), International Bartendars/Barmaids Association (IBA)…? Oh, International BRAGGARTS Association, perhaps???
"Oh dear, my mind is really failing me... Choo, where are you? Come get me, come save me, quick, I'm on the verge of breakdown, Choo, why did you leave me behind... I wet my PJs, Singaporeans are all baying for my blood... H-E-L-P!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Paul - Spread the news
After I have posted this, I will be sending the link to this website to everyone in my email address book. I hope all readers will do the same. If we do not get the news out ourselves, the PAP-controlled media will just put a different spin on it, that is if they will publish it at all.
This is getting more and more interesting every day. I cannot wait to see what else will come out of the woodwork.
Someone said elsewhere on this website that we should go easy on the MM since he is elderly. Ordinary elderly folk are wise in their hoary age and stay out of things they no longer feel competent of handling. This old man is so conceited that he thinks he has the mental capability to go on and on until he drops. It is a pity that he did not retire completely from politics when he was at the top. Now we cringe at his senior moments. They are an embarassment to Singapore. A wise man knows when to call time. What a shame this geriatric does not.

mike Chan - Where's the said letter of praise from IBA?
The very fact that LKY nor his counsel produced a copy of that letter from IBA there and then in Court to back up LKY's declaration should have raised suspicions. In fact it was Judge B Ang's duty to askenxRm to see it expeditiously to confirm there was such a letter (and shove it to Dr Chee's face.) before moving on.

Probably another case in point of LKY's asking some underling about how successful that legal conference was, and the latter daring not to do otherwise than to tell him what he liked to hear (never tell the emperor he has no clothes).

Think, don't "thinktok"!
How does one "demean" oneself by pointing out a fault, even if it is only some person's "one or two missteps"?
But the "misstep" is that of someone who, on account of Chee's purported one or two mistakes, has been branding him "cheat and liar" over the last decade or so!
And that "misstep" amounts to "lying under oath" at a court hearing wherein the Chees were sent to jail for "contempt of court"!

RETRENCH HIM??? But there's retrenchment benefits to be paid in such a scenario!!! And he'll, while still in office (or daughter-in-law), write out a check for himself for $43 billion - one billion for very year of 'service to his nation' since 1959 he will surely say!
RETRENCH HIM? NO WAY, JOSE!!!
Besides, it is to Singapore and Singaporeans he and clan and cronies owe hundreds of billions to, money they've stashed away everywhere there's a bank, postal savings, building loans society - who knows if the current ongoing sub-prime crisis wasn't started by them pulling the rug (their trillions) from underneath the Citis, the Barclays, the Merrill LYNCH-ED (by them), etc, for their fast-track retirement (and seeing their share price, asset value value collapse, go back in to buy and own a big chunk of each and every of these biggies)???
RETRENCH HIM??? Too cheap, too easy a way out for them, don't you think? Unless they already have mastered the technology to fly out to Mars and live on the red planet for ever and ever, we mustn't let these slimy things slid and disappear into the earth, out of our view forever!

Roland Soh - Mr.
What utter rubbish is spewing out of the old man these days?
Just last week he was laughing at farmers who water their crop during the day. According to his senile faculty, it should be done after sunset when evaporation is less severe. Farmers in Chua Choo Kang will tell you that if they don't water their veges during the day, these plants will wilt and die!
His other theory is that by giving foreigners more jobs, Singaporeans will benefit in the process. This is like saying that by giving away our monies, it will generate more monies for us. I am quite sure, he would'ny do this with his own monies.
Someday, I would not be surprise if he exhort all Singaporeans not to drink water during the day when one is most thirsty. Drink after the sun has set, he would said, so that we will not waste previous water, which will be evaporated through perspiration during the day!
Meanwhile, he is troting the globe with Singaporean's money, pretending to be an investment guru!

Only considered perjury for their opponents, otherwise it's an honest mistake.
Although I do agree somewhat with the earlier posters about getting concrete evidence first (black and white or recordings). Don't deny the possibility of IBA coming up with a public statement refuting what they said in private to SDP.
If this happens, it's going to look quiet bad on SDP. Learn from your mistakes, guys. Remember what happened during the cross-examination regarding Transparency Intl where CSJ could only quote a private dinner conversation to support his case?

I just cannot see how it can be an honest mistake. His statement could not have been any clearer. Yes, he claimed he did receive a letter from the IBA commending the high standards of the Singapore judiciary. The 2 paragraphs of the quote supports this in various ways. No, according to normal English usage, it cannot be misinterpreted. Perhaps there is an alternative PAP English dictionary and grammar whose meanings and rules we know nothing about.

Bit of truth in what this comment-maker said.
I trust too what Juan said to be true. But what one fears - many fear - is that the Establishment is now on the quiet scrambling to do some damage control from this fallout.
Will you be played out, betrayed somehow when crunch time comes and some people suddenly produces The Letter???

To SDP :
Distributing flyers is just one form of getting your message across, but they oftenly get thrown away or are misplaced after some time.
I believe we need a more lasting form of communication that stays around longer. I suggest you print and distribute propaganda stickers :
By all means, do whatever to get our message across, but please do the unthinkable, i.e. go round pasting annoying, hard-to-remove stickers on Singaporeans' property (gates, gas meters, etc) a la desperate no-brain locksmiths
or leaving flyers on these properties whose owners may be away and an accumulation of these lyers (like property agents' ads, Pizza Huts, Canadian Pizza, home delivery tinkat companies, etc) would only attract unwarranted attention of (most likely) foreigner thieves to do break-ins.
Because if we did these irksome things like the locksmiths and the foodsmiths, etc, we will ONLY INCUR THE WRATH OF OUR COMPATRIOTS so that instead of prodding them gently into our arms, we would only do the very opposite and DRIVE THEM AWAY, pissed, peeved and pissitudinized (you're right, I just made up this word, haha).
I would suggest further: Print out messages we like to get across, even manisfestos for the kind of Singapore we want (or rather one WE DON'T WANT), distribute them, if not by on-the-street flier method (few wish to be seen accepting one or be seen reading it), by way of post - direct mail works best, inide people's mailboxes, they come home after work to open up to look at dreadful bills (which they must even if they hate them)
and hey, presto, see our messages (include anything from this website too, let them all know The Truth), read them in the comfort and privacy - away from the 'prying eyes' of the MATA - of their own homes.
Costs more, yes, but ensures more 'hits', each and every 'target' is a name and real person, having ben culled from? Yes, the Singapore Phone Book/Directory 2007/2008 - thank you very much, Singtel & Yellow Pages.
And SingPost is working on the profit motive pattern, is it not? So it can not say no to $$$, can it? Heehee
Right. Where to get the money to fund such a masive distribution network - 26c per resident-to-be-mailed, multiplied by 2, 3 million individually unique person and business names on the directories...
Hm, where's Sunny Ho just when we need him?

Eeeediot - the LETTER
Yes i agree that if there was such a letter, why did Old Lee keep it 'under his pillow' and not brought it to show as evidence.
Dont tell me he cannot find it... Or was it non-existence in the first place?
Anyway, the longer he takes to produce thst letter, the more likely it is to be a fake.
As i have mentioned before, if LKY had compelling evidence against Dr Chee, do you think he would want to hide it? He would have brought all of them out and finished Dr Chee by now.
It's now clear for all to see what sort of 'integrity' the famiLEE has.

Karma man - He who sows will reap
I do not like to take sides, I acknowledge that the old man has achieved a lot for this tiny island, however he did have a lot of help from others as well as the general public and lately he has forgotten that. He has helped us but at the same time he has also helped his own kin and kind in many ways. But he has destroyed a lot of people, not bad people but many innocent ones who did not do anything to him. This showed the evil power monster in him.
The hatred these people, their family, friends and lately many more ordinary people have for the old man is growing day by day. It is not uncommon to hear day in day out people lamenting when the old man is going to die. Sadly, unless he does something, he will go down in history not as the most respected man but the most hated by his own people. Your true worth is counted by the drops of tear shed for you. People world over cried when Ghandi died, they cheered when Hitler died. I know what I will do when the old man goes (hopefully before me). Do you?
CSJ : You see, I had dinner with the Executive Director of the International Bar Association and I have correspondence with them as well. At the end of the Rule of Law Symposium which you were referring to, many of the participants came away very unhappy that the International Bar Association had held its meeting here.
Very unhappy with YOUR conduct during the Rule of Law Symposium. I think that is what the IBA chief is trying to tell you indirectly

IBA-n dayak
Erm, can I sue the old man? Would it be too cruel - it'd seem like bullying an octogenarian...
But then again the son, although younger and constitutionally having the greater say in affairs of state, by his (non-)performace (like a lame ducky we use for shooting practices in ranges), doesn't seem he is capable of putting himself and might be dissuaded from doing so by that Taliban-ed, erm, Turbaned, counsel of his that it seems a showdown in Singapore is the equivalent of seeing oil going down to $0 per barrel anytime hereinafter.
So sorry, people of Singapore, do what you have to do to end your plight and sufferings and do it yourselves.
If in case you all rise up in revolt and castrate that family and clan and in future were hauled up to The International Court of Human Rights on genocide charges, fret not, be sure all our members at IBA will stand up and defend you to the very last man.
Go ahead and just do it.
I hate that old-style, old-world full-of-himself barrister for making us scapegoat in his dirty game, made us seem we were his co-conspirators.
Jut you guys watch how I'm gonna personally cut down that demented head of a fox, hollow out the skull and make soup of his brain juice our traditional way, hehehe
Hmm, maybe call it
LEE KUAN stEW???
What do ya think?

Anonymous - re: Picking up small things for nothing
Enough is enough..
What is said in court is to the best knowledge of the plaintiff..
No use for CSJ to nickpick small things.
It doesn't matter.
What matters is the amount to be paid for damages.
If you did not defame in the first place, then nothing will happen to you and your pockets need not be emptied.
Ha ha, you getting enuf, with your heck care attitudes which is quite different from most opposition supporter.
I also one of them but instead getting irritated I think the best way's to be a observant.
“The foundation of the government of a nation must be built upon the rights of the people, but the administration must be entrusted to experts. We must not look upon those experts as stately and grand presidents and ministers, but simply as our chauffeurs, guards at the gate, cooks, physicians, carpenters, or tailors.”
Please notify the presiding judge Blenda Ang to pass down the punishment as soon as possible. :-)
