Dear Madam Yeong,

The court transcript which you produced after being pressed has confirmed your dishonesty.

You wrote in your letter to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ): "Having lost [the case], Dr. Chee in open court then called the Singapore leaders 'murderers, robbers, child molesters' and 'rapists.'"

You cleverly omitted the phrase that I had said to Mr Davinder Singh: "...you might as well throw it in..." (see below). By doing so you hide the fact that I was referring to Mr Singh's wild conclusions, and that since he was making all these allegations, he might as well throw in these terms.

This is a far cry from me saying that the Lees committed murder, robbery, rape and had molested children.

Your letter was not even a case of taking my words out of context, it was a wholesale twist of imputing to me something I was not saying. It is childish, unbecoming and a gross lack of intellectual decency.

In the audio-recording there was laughter in the courtroom after I told Mr Singh that he might as well throw in murderers, robbers, child molesters and rapists. (See below) You again omitted this portion in your letter to the WSJ to make it look like I have gone off the deep-end to call the Lees these names.

I also wrote in my letter to the WSJ: “Mdm Yeong also says that 'Singapore upholds free speech.' Yes, and Mr Mugabe has just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.” By the standard of your logic, you will no doubt say that I have claimed that the brutal Zimbabwean dictator is indeed a Nobel Peace Laureate.

Every time you make such wild claims, including your boss Mr Lee Kuan Yew calling me a psychopath, you degrade yourselves and the offices you hold.

On another matter, Mr Lee testified in court that the International Bar Association (IBA) president had sent a letter to the Law Society of Singapore (LSS) complimenting Singapore on its judiciary. The IBA denies sending the letter and the LSS confirms that it has not received such one.

Would you ask Mr Lee to produce the letter to refute the two organisations? This is important as it was part of the evidence that Mr Lee tendered in court under oath.

By the way you have still not answered why, as a civil servant, you are writing letters for the Minister Mentor when this is his personal matter and not a state one?

Chee Soon Juan
Secretary-General

Yeong Yoon Yin's letter to Today

Your report "Nothing to do with political freedom" (3 July 2008) refers to my letter to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and to Dr Chee Soon Juan's response published on his website.

In my letter to the WSJ, I said that in the recent defamation cases, Dr Chee had called Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew 'murderers, robbers, child molesters' and 'rapists' in open court.

Dr Chee alleged that I had lied, and challenged me to produce the relevant transcript.

I enclose p. 115 of the verbatim court reporting transcript of the hearing on28 May 2008. Line 11 onwards reads:

Mr Davinder Singh: " ... And to conclude on Dr Chee's submissions, he says that he doesn't wish Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Lee Hsien Loong ill. In that same breath, he says he stands by The New Democrat article, which alleged that they are 'criminals, corrupt, and covered up matters in the NKF'. And under his breath he's now just said 'murderers and robbers'."

Dr Chee: "And rapists, too, you might as well throw it in, you know, right? Child molesters". [SDP: This was followed by laughter in the courtroom.]

Mr Singh: "And this is the man who says "I don't wish them ill".

Dr Chee has once again lied to Singaporeans.

Yeoong Yoon Ying
Press Secretary to Minister Mentor

(SDP:Today completely ignored Dr Chee's letter to the WSJ and only published Mdm Yeong's response.)

    To SDP :

EXPOSE these PAP rubbish in the Internet, YouTube, Blogs, etc., for the whole world to see what sort of person LKY is.

Respect All but Fear None !!
  • Anonymous
What kind of spokesperson, and probably a highly paid one, have LKY got?

Can't even tell who was actually making the allegation! Maybe can't even understand English!

It is clear as crystal that it was Singh who made the allegation and not Chee.
  • Sylvester Lim - Thank God for the Internet
These people had in the past skewed the truth with impunity as they controlled the only source of information. Thank God for the Internet as it is now difficult for them to do that now without shooting themselves in the foot or better still, in head as they may lose their jobs when their bosses need a scapegoat. If SDP did not have the audio recordings and transcripts, I dread to think of the shit they would have put out to character assasinate Dr Chee and their opponents. Yes, they are just doing their jobs for the money, but, at what expense? Their dignity, soul or God?
  • Damien Toh
Unfortunately, unless am very much mistaken, I believe this clarification here will not be published on the ST nor Today. So, majority will believe Dr Chee is lying.

Somehow the govt likes to take words uttered by their political rivals out of contex most of the time..
  • Anonymous - TinTin effect lah
If you say to me that I called you "monkey donkey and Lukas Podosky" and I added why not you add in "Billions of Bilious Blue Blistering Barnacles! " or "Ten thousand thundering typhoons!" All the curses go to my account....

Don't belive read TinTin comics how captain Haddock curses :) :)

I think the secy reads too much of TinTin just like me lah... he he.
  • Low Fak Yew - Today Newspapers
How come this type of important news is published not in the ST papers? Why in TODAY?

Unless you subscribe, only private estates and landed propertys' residents get to read TODAY FOC.

Why TODAY ignores DR Chee's letter ?
Is this a plot against DR Chee?

We just don't understand. If you dare to challenge people to the cul-de-sac, then let's fight like a man, age is not an excuse.
  • Chew
I see this as another character assassination ploy by PAP.

They know that the grounds are shaking and they are scare of Chee's and other oppositions' soaring popularity. They know their selfish and self-profiting policies had caused the people to want to turn to alternatives.

They also know that they control the state medias which in turn, will publish only one side of the story - their side, no matter how twisted or false it may be.

I hate to say this, but PAP surely stunk to heaven high for me after this, not that it didn't stink before that.
  • truth - LKY has always been like that
This is the real LKY - a lying, bullying and cheating coward. He has been distorting the truth for far too long and get away with it. Now he must face up to the truth and the picture is very urgly.
Jaslyn, I love your style which is non-contentious and non-aggressive, yet gets the right message across in a way that the common folk can readily appreciate and understand. I think that is the way to go.
Die lah, talk like that, apa "non-contentious" lah, "this is the RIGHT way lah", etc.

You're beginning to like the PAPpies who once they see people getting really fed up and about to rise up in anger, quickly try to dissipate anger by pointing out
who are the GOOD Opposition - mousy, balls-less and weasel-like Tiochiu Low - and who are the BAD Opposition - Ah Juan the Scapegoat lah, as usual, who else, haha -
to try to sow discord among not only the Other Side but Singaporeans in general, makes their rule that much easier with bogeymen around, see.

So there's no one right way or two, or three, to go about bringing change, helping to bring change.

As long as the cause is just - which is why you wanted change in the place, right, goodu-reans? - and the powers-that-be are unjust, unfair, unreasonable oppressive rulers with no mores and human conscience,
ANY WAY TO BRING FORTH CHANGE
    - yes, violent struggles included; if that's the ONLY language the Establishment understands -
    IS GAME.

Time to stop prescribing to PAP's way of dictating to you Singaporeans what is right opposition and what's no-no - then you're merely falling back into that trap from which you found hard to extricate yourselves.

Grow some brains, Singapoeans. It's time - way past due, in fact.

I will be there with you, with The Eighteen, inside and outside the courts - I've decided to stand out and stand up for - no, not for all of you, I ain't that noble, just for me, my family, my relatives and my ethnic Minnanese clan.

    I'm 18+ONE - you may say I'm your proverbial 19th Man of 9/11.

    Only this time it's 7/11 - 18 martyrs + 1 martyr-wannabee, heehee.

(Hope all 19 of us won't be martyred and die just yet.

Not until at least what is gonna happen 7/11 is/are gonna bring out MORE, MANY MANY MORE people out onto the streets and show 'em OUR FURY a la People Power - sorry not very original, I know, but that's the only way we must know and do to topple once and for all this system that's gone awry very quickly in these last 10 odd years, ever since those monkeys transformed themselves into bigger, filthier but filthy rich big gorillas with over-voracious appetites!)

Mdm Yeong's "transcript" of that speech of Davinder's put 'criminals, corrupt and covered up things in the NKF' within quotes, meaning to say that those words were the Chees', lifted from the article in the Democrat authored by them.

    Is that true?

From the audio of the speech, those words sound like Davinder's own, representing his or his clients' inferences from the Chees' article alleging similarities in the way NKF and the government were run.

Davinder did not preface those sayings with saying "quote", neither did he end them with saying "unquote". So, how have the quotation marks got transcripted in?
  • Nurse Mildred Ratched
Thank you, SDP. Due to your relentless effort in fighting against injustice for freedom and human rights, nowadays, more and more human Fridays are awakening. Keep on fighting. You have all my support despite my nickname which I gave it myself in honour of MM Lee. :-)
  • tohjohn
    It's so clear cut.

It was D. Singh making the allegations with all the while. Twisting and turning what was said and what it meant.

LKY and LHL, both of you are cowards and both of you employ liars to do your dirty deeds. This makes both of you liars too
  • Ignorant citizen - 狼來了。。狼來了!"
This incident reminds me of the story that I have learned from my primary school context "狼來了。。狼來了!"

Finally we will know who is the liar!
  • Truth - Expose LKY's Lies
Yes, I agree with the first response that we need to expose LKY's lie.

A short YOUTUBE video would be extremely helpful, as you can track how many people really see's it.

LKY has the entire media helping him, giving him an unfair disadvantage. Millions of people read the newspaper, compare to the much smaller number of people who read this website.

BTW, can you give us a feel of this site's TRAFFIC?? ie how many people visit the SDP website??

I also noticed that many of the other so called neutral websites like TOC website, contain only occassional references to SDP website... not a lot of references.

LKY's UNFAIR TACTICS really makes my blood boils!!!!
  • putra - WSJ Laughter
Yeong Yoon Yin's letter to Today may create a bigger laughter in WSJ than the laughter in the courtroom after Mr Singh was told that he might as well throw in murderers, robbers, child molesters and rapists.
  • CHUA CHUAN SEAH - Let Us Work For A New Government
Lee Kuan Yew does not believe in democracy. He has never tolerated his political opponents, dissidents and critics -- both locally and internationally.

Ever since his rise to power, he has frustrated (both actual and potential) political opposition by strictly controlling the mass media, by threatening and undermining other political parties, and by exerting a firm control over our legal system, which has been manipulated to prosecute -- and persecute -- his many political opponents.

This monopoly over the mass media and the courts gives him a highly effective means of perpetuating the PAP's rule.

In itself a major source of power, this monopoly over the courts and the mass media also supplies the PAP machinery by which excesses of power can be disguised or legitimized.

These measures are frequently undertaken in the name of order and stability (especially plausible in light of the problems faced by a small nation like ours -- with our ethnic and religious differences, lack of natural resources, class differences, potential foreign threats and the need to promote economic development).

Lee Kuan Yew has often been credited with transforming Singapore into a modern and industrialized nation.

But Lee's autocratic and authoritarian regime will only let us live our own restricted lives -- as long as we stay out of contentious politics and remain as passive, obedient, subservient and exploited economic digits, devoted to the enrichment of our power and economic elite.

Have our lives been really much better under PAP rule? -- much better than what they could have been under another government -- had we been fortunate enough to be governed by a more humane, liberal, compassionate, just and tolerant but equally progressive political leadership?
  • mike Chan - Ms YYY, where is your intellectual honesty?
I believe Ms Yeong was some scholar to be appointed PressSecy to LKY. As a former non-scholar civil servant, i used to really respect these scholar high-fliers as some of them were my bosses...for their integrity and intellectual honesty. But it now appears that scholar Ms Yeong has not only failed me but disgusted me. Has she no conscience nor shame to be truthful to herself as a learned human being?
Or maybe the poor frightened girl had no choice but to comply with the orders from those above her?
Whatever, I'm sure everyone has a certain standard of decency and integrity but Ms Yeong's ( and her bosses') are sadly way down in the mud. Sad, very sad for a so-called first-world developed nation!

Dr Chee has once again lied to Singaporeans.

Funny how Yeong Yoon Yin could accuse Dr. Chee of this deed when she's hypocritically spinning a web of lies by ignoring the transcript altogether? (Which is proof)

From the article I can only infer that PAP wants to continue to smear Dr. Chee's credibility. Only happens in Singapore. ;X

Didn't mothers use to teach their daughters to never trust a pretty face?

Yes, this 馬嚴慶 is quite some Hokkien pretty boy face by all accounts.

But then there are now more pretty-boy faces in the PAP line-up - in part their response to real world expectations and camoring for rock star politicians (if they can),
thus going back on what they had been doing, vringing in only stoic-looking, uninteresting featureless faces, eg. Hakka men-devils like the Old Fox himself with that staright-out-of-the-movie-Aliens look and Shorty Short-tongued Seng, and many others who, of course, have to be uglier-looking than the megalomaniac himself.

And the Old Fox was right - that pretty faces cannot be trusted. To accomplish work at least, as Hui Leng kept finding out.

But forgive him, will you? He's after all a member of our Association, a son of the great Minannese diaspora. Just this once, okay?

We will write to his ancestral village head so he can issue Baey a reprimand as well as a letter of demand for his immediate dissociation from the ruling Hakkas in Singapore so as not to bring further shame to his ancestors.

But let him a few weeks to draw his salaries yet. He has a family to feed too after all, to repay that 'older sister' of a wife of his who must also in her younger days be swayed by his boyish pretty looks into marrying him for him to 'gigolo' from her before he did well enough to get into PAPpies' good books to earn decent-enough pay packets to return her favors.

Spare this Hokkien boy, let him repent and atone for his sins this time - he's one of our own too after all.
  • Eeeediot
I agree that with the media under the control of the LEEgime, it's very hard for Dr Chee to spread the news and expose the lies of the famiLEE.

The only way is via bloggers' blog, youtube, SPD newspapers and fliers or maybe even CDs with the audio recordings etc.

Also, has ONE NATION UNDER LEE(ONUL) been censored and returned to SDP? Otherwise, since ONUL belongs to Honest Productions, it would be swell if they allow us to burn copies and give it to friends and family members.

After all, if permission is given, we are not breaking Copyright Laws. Nor are we going to broadcast the documentary in public, so once again, no laws are broken. And if distributing CDs doesnt work, we can always direct people to the links. Noone said that asking people to visit links is illegal =)

The tables will be turned on the LEEgime soon! Come 2010 or 2011 we shall see!

It is people like her who have created that cursed and derisive state. So everyone just go 'Ying Ying Ying'! Don't worry Ms Ying Ying Ying, people like you will help make that failed Republic a laughing stock of the world. Meantime, just Ying Ying Ying! What a shame!
  • Paul - Yeong in a hole
Yeong has flown only in calm, cloudless blue skies. Now she has come crashing down and armed with a spade all she knows to do is to dig an ever deeper hole for herself. I am sure she is bright enough to know that when one finds oneself in a hole, the best thing to do is to stop digging. However, she is not used to such discomfiture and I will not be amazed if she will dig even harder.

It will be interesting to see how she will squirm out of her present predicament. Perhaps she will get out of it with one mighty bound when her hero, Flash Harry, appears on the scene with some secret equipment. All he has to do is to say a word and all his highly paid minions will spring into action lashing out left, right, and centre. I await with bated breath but in the meantime the hole she is in gets filled with brown sticky doodoo.

Interesting to see in the Straits Times today PM's press secretary writing to "Today" teaching them that it "should take sides when reporting on Malaysia and other countries' affairs".

First, it is a public confession that our papers do "take sides".

But does the press secretary mean that the press shouldn't take sides only when reporting on other countries?

What about "Today"'s headline "Chee Lies Again"?
  • Michael Chan - INSIDIOUS EVIL MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE!
It's not intellectual dishonesty nor stupidity of Ms YYY, press secy to LKY. These are highly educated people paid obscene salaries who knew exactly what they conjectured and wrote.

He must now produce the part of the transcript that quotes me saying those words or he risks destroying his own credibility."

Chee should get JB to sue Mdm Yeo for the saying those awful things attributing to him. A more refined approach would be to ask her for a retraction /statement in ST and Today and Wall Street Journal . This one is a sure win one and it will help tremenedously Chee's crusade in Singapore and raise his profile in the international arena.

The PM's office has told the press "not to take sides when reporting on affairs of other countries", and therefore, surely, more importantly, also not to take sides when reporting on local affairs.

Then, should not the PM tell "Today" to report on Chee's explanation of what he meant when he said those words about the Lees which Mdm Yeong quoted?

"Today" had printed in headlines "Chee lies again" when reporting on Mdm Yeong's claim, which was a very biased slant.

Should they not now balance the report, to be consistent with the PM's admonishment?
  • Anonymous
"Anonymous" hasn't learnt what "uttered" means. In that context, it means "said and MEANT TO SAY".

It is obvious from the audio, that when Chee said those words, he did not mean them the way Mdm Yeong claims.

Infact, he meant the opposite. He meant that those words were as exaggerated as Davinder's claim that Chee had, in that article in the New Democrat, said that the Lees were "criminals", etc.
  • Johnson Bennyson
In That the case, I challenged the SDP to sue them to clear yourself, or its American english versus British english?? Or its indeed CHEE lies again.
  • Anonymous
Chee did "utter" those words "under his breath" (as Davinder said), but he did not mean them in the way Davinder and Yeong accused him to mean.

This is confirmed by Chee's initial denial that he even "uttered" those words.

It is precisely because he never meant to say those things that he forgot entirely that part of the court encounter with Davinder. (He had been to prison, and should be excused for not recalling immediately those impromptu and unimportant remarks, uttered in the throat, probably just for Davinder to hear, while the latter was delivering his, to Chee, wild inferences.

Then on hearing the full audio, he now realises that those words were indeed uttered, but obviously meant to be sarcastic, with the meaning he now explains.

Yeong, however, and even Davinder (a senior counsel and therefore expected to be very good at interpreting words), have either misunderstood him, or deliberately misrepresented his meaning.
  • Chew - My simple understanding
    1) The 3 sets of words are "criminal and corrupt", "robbers and murderers" and "molesters and child rapist".

    2) Lee alleged that Chee implied them to be "criminal and corrupt" via The New Democrat article. These are Lee's words, not Chee's.

    3) Chee disputed this claim of Lee by claiming trial which was denied with summary judgment awarded to Lee.

    4) During damage assessment submission, Davinder Singh heard Chee muttered something and alleged that Chee said the words, "murders and robbers". Again, these are Singh's words, not Chee's.

    5) Chee countered these allegations sarcastically that since Singh is going to put words in Chee's mouth, Singh might as well say Chee had said "molesters and child rapist" or something even more outrageous.

    6) All, in all, only 2 words "molesters and child rapist" are from Chee, and these are uttered in sarcasm to counter Singh's latest allegation in addition to all his other allegations and in no way can I see it made in reference to the Lees.

    7) I think Lee's secretary is the one insulting our intelligence.

    Dear Mdm Yeong Yoon Ying,

I am writing this because I really wonder how things have come to such a point for a person like you.

Although I don't know you personally, I have no doubt that you must be a highly educated lady. Probably a scholar who has excelled academically and achieved a lot in your life.

As to the allegations you made in your reply to WSJ, I have no doubt that in your heart you know that Dr Chee did not call the Singapore leaders "murderers, robbers, child molesters and 'rapists".

Of course, one can twist and stretch our logic and say that technically he did. But I know that you know that he didn't.

My point is why do you, such an intelligent person, allow yourself to lose your sense of integrity in your course of carrying out your work. You know (and there is no denying that you know) that what you wrote in your article has degraded your integrity and conscience. Surely those are more important than "doing what is required of you". Not sure if you are a religious person, because that would have made it much more difficult for you. You could have stood your grounds and disagreed to put your name to such an dishonest twisting of facts.

I'm not sure why, but I do feel a sense of pain and loss for you. Please don't lose your sense of integrity because that is much more importantly in life than anything else.

Smart Singaporeans know that it is pointless for Dr Chee to sue in kangaroo courts.

Only blind, deaf and stupid Singaporeans still think that our court dispense justice equally regardless of status.

Victor, do you not remember LKY saying only recently, "Singapore has its own sort of libel law; and it works for us"'?

Twice Lee tried to bring his case overseas, once where the Privy Council ruled against him accusing Singapore of unfairness against Jeya, and more recently, I think, in Canada where he tried to get the court there to rule out some evidence but was told that justice and rights were respected in that country.

Are you, then, one of those "smart Singaporeans"?

Victor, I tend to agree with you that Singaporeans are not stupid and their ears are not blocked. That much you may be correct.

Even a smart Singaporean will look stupid if fed wrong information. He might even start life very smart but if fed nothing but crap day after day, he will turn into a turd. Are you one of these? Yes, his ears are not blocked but what does he hear constantly from government-controlled media?

That is exactly why the SDP needs to speak up and reveal what things are truly like. I invite you to do your own research instead of accepting blindly all you read and hear from the government-controlled media? How do you know they are correct if you have not ascertained for yourself their veracity?

    Quote from Gopalan Nair:

"Not satisfied with having arrested me for just writing a blog in criticism of the Judge Belinda Ang now the Singapore Police have resorted to beating me up.

No amount of police brutality against me can change the facts. Neither can it make me say that 2 and 2 is 5, simply because it is not.

Judge Belinda Ang was biased. There is no doubt about it. She behaved that way for all to see. If no Singaporean mentioned it, it was because they are afraid. They live in a police state. They live in fear and in subjugation. I do not live that way. I am a free man. And I will say what I saw."

A TURE AND WELL SAID MAN- MAN OF PRINCIPLES INDEED!!
