Home News Singapore Conflicting information from IMH about M Ravi
Conflicting information from IMH about M Ravi PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 September 2008
Singapore Democrats

Mr M Ravi was brought to the High Court on Friday morning to argue a Criminal Motion he had filed against the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) where he has been remanded since 18 Aug 08.

Ms Chee Siok Chin had tried to visit Mr Ravi but was told by the hospital that Mr Ravi was not allowed visitors, not even family members, as he is in remand. This is obviously not true because Sheila, one of Mr Ravi's sisters, had in fact visited him.

Sheila spoke to the hospital staff about Ms Chee's visit because Mr Ravi had requested to see Ms Chee. But this was turned down. It is understood, however, that one of Mr Ravi's clients was allowed to visit him on several occasions.

Another area of inconsistency is Mr Ravi's treatment. While the hospital says that the lawyer would not be given medication, Mr Ravi's family members said that he had been given medication. In fact, the prosecutor revealed in court Mr Ravi was on medication.

This sort of conflicting information raises serious questions about how Mr Ravi is being treated.

Mr Ravi argued before High Court Judge Tay Yong Kwang that he should not be further remanded at IMH. He pointed out that, since a diagnosis had already been made, then he should be free to seek treatment from other psychiatrists rather than be held at the IMH. Custodial rights, the lawyer argued, cannot and should not be returned to those against whom he is taking out the criminal motion.

Judge Tay dismissed the application. He did not give reasons for his decision.

sorry anna, hate to say this but singapore is lky. unless you guys stand up for yourselves and make sacrifices for yourselves, why should any country do the work that apparently singaporeans refuse, or do not care to do on their own.

i agree, it's getting worse in singapore. however, unless you are prepared to stand up for yourselves and do something, why should anyone, especially a foreign country do anything for you? after living in singapore, i would never let my son do battle for a people that will not battle for themselves. to this day i tell people of the people in singapore and how people will not dirty their hands when needed but will guard their bank account more readily than their freedoms, liberties, and rights.

last time i checked, 18 actually did something while hundreds if not thousands did nothing. so really, why help a country that does not help itself?

you should be banging down the door to see ravi, all of you should... but you aren't are you. so again, why should any foreigner help you?

hey, i'm on your side. but the difference between me and almost all of you is that while you are waiting for lky to die, what i see is a day when dr. chee dies and how none of you marched, fought, and sacrificed along with the one man who perhaps gave you the best chance you ever had to gain your freedoms, liberties, and rights. mind you JB is not getting any younger too. so instead of WAITING for lky to DIE, help the warriors among you LIVE and fight beside them. then maybe, just maybe other countries will stand behind you.

"Soviet and Western human rights experts have long charged that political and religious dissidents in the Soviet Union have been confined to mental hospitals. In 1983, the Soviet Union resigned from the World Psychiatric Association rather than face a likely expulsion as a result of reports on the use of mental hospitals to confine dissidents."
- The New York Times, Saturday, September 6, 2008

"In a telegram from 1971, noted Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov supports the protests of two dissidents, V. Fainberg and V. Borisov, who have been hospitalized in a Leningrad psychiatric institution for "asocial behavior." An accompanying memorandum from the USSR Minister of Health affirms the legitimacy and advisability of hospitalizing the two dissidents in the institution, run by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and denies the use of mind-altering medications in their treatment."

History repeating itself?

According to ST, IMH lawyer Kuah Boon Theng said that M. Ravi has repeatedly refused to take his medicine in IMH.

Is this another contradiction to their claim that M. Ravi was NOT given medication?

Absurd.

Watch out. Dr. Chee could be the next two held in the IMH..PAP would explain that it is for his own GOOD.

Thanks you PAPee.

Isn't this a criminal act?

This is yet another tactics to silence Singaporean, like what he did to Lim Chin Siong.

Once upon a time, such dark deeds by a judge would have remained under the covers of the PAP propaganda broadsheet. No longer. The internet has enabled information to be fast and far and wide. I am grateful to the SDP for exposing the biased inconsistencies committed by a shameless member of the profession whose watchword should be "without fear or favour".

The law is trampled over without compunction by unjust judges in their hobnailed boots. Their judgements are arbitrary and capricious to say the least. They will be surely called to account one day. "I was obeying my paymaster" or "I did what everyone else did" will not be acceptable excuses. Your time is now but our time will come. You might as well start holding your breath as the day will come soon.
Ah Heng  -     Sun, 07 Sep 2008 4:24 pm
Very soon LKY and his family member all will go in to Institute of Mental Health, soon very soon. Judgement is near them

We do well to remember this...

"In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."

In Sinkapoor, they came first for the Marxist conspirators, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Marxist conspirator;
And then they came for the political activists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a political activist;
And then they came for the Lawyers, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Lawyer;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.

How true and real!

if Ravi wasn't nuts.. how could PAP "silence" him? Unless of course, Ravi is indeed nuts and PAP took the OPPORTUNITY to do so.

Riding out the financial crisis

Year 2008 is a year of change, of forced consolidation and rebirth.

Out of university in 1998, I entered the workforce in 1999 fresh with memories of having to work part-time throughout my practice law course. The economy was still feeling the effects of the Asian financial crisis.
