Chee speaking with University officials Michael Ng (centre) and Peck Thian Guan (right)Singapore Democrats

The SDP was prevented from distributing flyers today at NUS. Mr Michael Ng, Director of the Office of Estate and Development, asked leaders of the party not to give away flyers to the students.

"We have to protect the interests of our students," the official said.

"From what?" Dr Chee asked. "Are you running a university or a kindergarten?"

Another official Dr Peck Thian Guan, Director of the Office of Safety, Health & Environment, chipped in, "It's not only you but we don't allow anyone to distribute flyers."

Chee posing for a picture with students A staff member walking by could not resist taking a dig at the officers: "Great job, guys. Thanks so much from keeping us safe!" Messrs Ng and Peck could only smile sheepishly.

Just then several students wanted to take a picture with Dr Chee. A few asked for autographs.

Turning to Mr Ng, Dr Chee said: "The students don't look like they want your protection."

Several more students came up and started popping questions to the leaders. Mr Gandhi Ambalam, Mr Francis Yong, Mr John Tan, and Ms Chee Siok Chin were soon answering students' questions ranging from the state of the opposition to the media to the reality of the economy.

"I have been to Japan many times," one first-year Engineering student said, "and I've never seen seventy- and eighty-year-olds sweeping the floor and cleaning tables like in Singapore. It's so sad." He added that the University seems to be mass producing graduate robots.

Another student from Political Science who had attended the recent defamation hearing between Lee Kuan Yew and the SDP, told Ms Chee that there was still much fear among students.

Gandhi Ambalam chatting with students A journalism major indicated that she "will never join the Straits Times" after she graduated. She probably learned a thing or two in school that didn't quite square with the nonsense that was practiced in the state newspaper.

A couple of other students conducted brief interviews with the SDP leaders for the online university newspaper Campus Observer. From the repeated line of questions, it was clear that the students seemed to be sensitive to the fact that most of their college mates were rather uninformed and apathetic about current affairs. Why is this so, they asked.

"That's not hard to figure out," Dr Chee explained. "From years of authoritarian rule where students have been cowed into silence, we have bred a very unhealthy university culture. The sad part is that you are being deprived of the type of cutting edge educational experience that your counterparts in the top universities elsewhere are getting."

Turning back to officialdom, Dr Chee said that all the SDP wanted to do was to raise political awareness among the students.

John Tan answering questions "Why can't you guys see that education is not just about hitting the books, taking exams and getting that degree," he said. "It's also about developing one's intellectual and moral character. It's not just about producing graduates, but also developing leadership."

Dr Peck said that he too wanted to see students to think beyond their books. He suggested that the SDP write to the student associations and ask them to organise events.

"I've been down that road before. The university administration will say no and then what?" Dr Chee asked.

"Then you come back to me and we'll see what we can work out. You have my word," Dr Peck assured.

Dr Chee then asked some of the students to take the lead and organise themselves to raise political and social awareness on campus. "In the meantime we'll write to some of the student bodies and see if they will organise an event," he promised.

Dear Sir,

My colleagues and I were at NUS today to distribute flyers to raise awareness among your fellow students about our nation's politics.

We were, however, told by University officials that such an exercise was not allowed. They suggested that we write to student organisations to see if an event could be organised for us to address and interact with students.

Being the University's students' union, I would like to ask if you would organise an event for this purpose. From the reaction of the students today, it seems that there is great interest in what we have to say.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Gandhi Ambalam
Chairman
Singapore Democratic Party

Only PAP shears are allowed to touch the wool of NUS sheep. SDP shears are not.

Dear Mr Ambalam,

Thank you for your letter of 11 Sep.

I must proclaimed that as student union, we are given full liberty to organise forum or talks by any body; though, we need protection from being dished out leaflets... u know what I mean...

I am certainly happy to have you people come and speak to us on any topic... Yes, any topic...

But then again, as student leader, the interest of all students is upper most in my mind....

Before I give u my official confirmation, I must however state that our Union constitution does not permit have to protect our students from talks given by bankrupt people...

So, please do not include bankrupt people in your list ... u know what I mean... hehe....

As usually, I am sure SDP is overstating its success. Its a sad thing if the majority of NUS students don't see the SDP for the liars that they are. There would be little hope left. Anyone who has been truly educated will see through SDP's endless lies, its distortion of the truth and its selective reporting. If what the SDP says on its site is true - this site will not exist. The leaders of the Singapore Destruction Party would have been jailed years ago. Just look at the way Chee is glorified on this site. Do you want to install the CHEEGIME in Singapore? Look at how SDP supporters attack other opposition parties. Is this the spirit of democracy? Can a party with the worst performance at the polls claim to represent the people? The SDP is run on the personal agenda of one man - do not be fooled!

it is this kind of kia-su kia-si mindset, and the embarrassingly pro-pap stance of the NUS that are turning away alumni like me.

they should know why most alumni don't have a sense of identity and affinity with the NUS....

sad indeed, for someone who has spent so many years there...

Dear SDP,
I sincerely appreciate your coming down today as the discourses that I shared with Dr.Chee,Ms Chee and Mr Ambalam were all truly enriching and proved to be a refreshing change from what I have hitherto been reading and hearing from the state controlled media. My exchanges with Mr Ambalam, in particular, were the most exhilarating as he presented me with astonishing and distrubing facts of this nation`s political past and present which I would have never known if not for him. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to Mr Ambalam for spending over an hour with me to answer my questions and to fill me in with fresh knowledge. As a student of NUS, it is indeed regrettable that our administration behaved in the way they did this afternoon but i would like to have all of you know that although the vast majority of the NUS student population continues to maintain their political apathy, there still are a handful of us who are more than willing to listen to you speak and have you answer our seemingly endless questions.
Please come down again, we will be waiting.
NOT MY SDP  -  A Mobocrat in the Making     Fri, 12 Sep 2008 12:57 am
SDP is playing minds by painting a good picture of itself.

Yes, a couple of students might stop by and take a picture with you, but do you know how many turned away in your face.

Being charismatic is not enough. You can draw attention and be a mobocrat. That's dangerous. SDP, do not kill democracy.

Notice the unconvincing, ambivalent mannerisms of the university officials, in their saying to SDP what they felt they are paid to say and do, and yet unable to totally hide their sympathy with Chee and others.

Reminds me of an encounter I had, some ten years ago, with the CEO of an organisation, who had come down to have lunch with staff to engage us personally on work matters.

I raised with him the ethics of his ruling that we had to get clearance from him every time the press approached us for comments. I said that as we were paid by tax-payers to function within the area of our expertise, we had the moral obligation to answer, when queried, on issues that came within that expertise.

The CEO saw the point, but sheepishly said, looking at me with a pleading look, "But you know....we are not really free in Singapore..." He meant, didn't he, " I know you are right, but please, please, don't get me into trouble"!!

Another time, with another CEO, a paper was solicted of me to be submitted to a powerful minister in government. CEO wanted me to change a word, only because 'minister wouldn't like it'. I didn't change the meaning of what I said and only substitute it with another word. That was enough to let the paper through!

Those CEOs must have been among those who appeared life on TV listening and clapping the PM during that May Day speech. But what heart and mind hid behind those smiles and clappings?

The moral? Restrictive and top-down rule results in appointment of yes-men, who, because appointed on that basis, are wont to keep on saying yes, no matter what go on in their heart and mind.

And we wonder why, somewhat too late, we are just beginning to, and only artificially, to get our people to 'think'.

As usual, I am sure PAP is overstating its success. It's a sad, sad situation if the majority of NUS students don't see the PAP for the liars that they are. There is little hope left. Anyone who has been truly educated will see through PAP's endless lies, its distortion of the truth and its selective reporting. If what the PAP claims in its media is true - this site would not be needed.

The leaders of the Paranoid Anal Party should have been jailed years ago. Just look at the way Lee is glorified in the media. Do you want to perpetuate the LEEGIME in Singapore? Look at how PAP supporters attack other opposition parties and deface their websites. Is this the spirit of democracy? Can a party with the worst abuse of citizen's rights claim to represent the people? The PAP is run on the personal agenda of one man - do not be fooled!
maxChew  -  Fear of the truth being disseminated?    Fri, 12 Sep 2008 8:20 am
The NUS officials must have taken their cue from the top-shot of NUS i.e. the President himself, who in turn either did a self-censorship all by himself or consulted the MOE headed by breast-cancer expert Dr Ng Egg Hen.Dr NEH is a likely future PAP PM if no suitable Lee appears after the current Lee leaves his post.(the suitable Wong may be the seat-warmer)
The NUS is supposed to be the place where the top brains and future leaders are located. I rembered when I was there back in the 60s that their mission statements was "To seek the truth without fear or favor"
I supposed it now shows clearly that whilst in the 60s we were seeking the truth, now in the noughties they (NUS admin and MOE) are afraid of the TRUTH being disseminated to their "impressionable" students of NUS "Kindergarten"
A real shame and a sham. Is S'pore now intellectually progressing or regressing in the noughty year 2008?

Good to see you are concerned about society. I hope you also asked - How would supporting the SDP help the old people in Singapore? So SDP told you a lot of shocking things about our political past? Did you also query Chee about how and why he ousted Chiam See Tong from the SDP, and how the SDP has since then performed miserably at the polls? Should Chee not have to take responsibility for this? Who deserves our respect more - Chiam who has been serving his ward all this time or Chee, who holds no job expect to create trouble?
