Singapore Democrats

To: The Editor
Lianhe Zaobao

Your correspondent Ms You Lun Tian quoted National Solidarity Party member Mr Goh Meng Seng as saying: "Extremist viewpoints may draw the attention of people and garner the support of other extremists, but most web users will still want to hear balanced, moderate, mature arguments. This is also the reason why the SDP website is rapidly losing its readers." (
Lianhe Zaobao, 20 Sep 08)

There is certainly an effort to try to paint the Singapore Democrats as extremists. The SDP makes no apology for challenging the present political system and, more importantly, working to reform it.

Our objective is to ensure that the PAP Government respects democratic principles as enshrined in our Constitution. These principles include the freedoms of speech, association and assembly.

The actions of the SDP and other pro-democracy activists, which included the use of civil disobedience, have led to the opening up of Speakers' Corner for demonstrations, albeit in a very limited way. The Government has, belatedly, acknowledged the necessity of protests.

Freedoms of speech and assembly is the bread and butter of democratic politics. Without them, there is no democracy. Only in autocratic systems are such freedoms and the exercise of them considered extreme.

On the point about the SDP website losing readers, we'll let the statistics speak for themselves:

Between 20 June and 20 September 2008, global traffic rank of the SDP website, according to the Alexa website, rose by 194,650 positions putting us at position number 337,797.

PAP has the second highest position for Singapore's political parties, coming in at a distant 1,286,895.

Within Singapore, the SDP's traffic rank is 2,429. Again, PAP comes in second but only at position 7,266.

During this period, the number of users visiting our site saw a 51 percent increase. This compares to only 2 percent for the PAP website. This figure for the SDP may have dropped slightly in recent days due to our website being down for a couple of days.

Not only are there more visitors, our readers are also spending more time reading our posts. The number of pages viewed per day per user increased by 31 percent. For a similar period, the figure for the PAP's website recorded a minus 27 percent!

In June, our website crashed because of the surge in the number of visitors. Since then, according to our own statistics, we have seen at least a tripling in the number of visitors.

We don't think these figures point to the SDP "rapidly losing its readers," do you?

If anything
, they support the view that "most web users will still want to hear balanced, moderate, mature arguments." And that's what the SDP intends to continue doing on our website.

John L Tan
Assistant Secretary-General
Singapore Democratic Party

Yes. But apparently, the PAP internet brigade is stupid. And pleaseeeee don't censure my comment. It's true after all!

sdp website is too happening to lose readers. especially those from the pap side lol.
  • tan ah kow
People log on to this site, like me, for amusement. SDP is providing more amusement by the day. It is good and I am thankful for that. You made effort to write articles everyday to highlight issues to us, with a very obvious agenda

It is funny reading about the SDP and how they strategise to make themselves relevant in an increasingly irrelevant envrionment. They may feel encouraged by the increasing traffic, good, please continue to provide alternative form of amusement for us
  • Jaslyn Go - SDP "rapidly" losing it's readership???
No wonder friends whom I have not met for awhile even know about my involvement in TBT, one even send me a email saying "nice pic of you in your TBT tees" - referring to the TBT pic taken outside the police center..

looks like they are reading SDP's website too..

now I no longer can hide my activism work from them (not that I wanted to in the first place..haha)..

I only started reading SDP's website after March 15, all thanks to the police who "reminded" me to.. Thank you IO Yew, if not for you, I really didn't know what I have missed..

Now SDP's website is my default homepage.

Good job SDP, keep up the good work!
  • NOT MY SDP - Using Statistics to Lie!
Since SDP wants to base their statistics from Alexa, we'll do the same. According to Alexa, only 45.6% of the visitors to the SDP website are Singaporeans, with 41.8% from China. PAP, on the other hand, has 77% of its visitors who are Singaporeans.

It is a chilling indictment of how distorted the mindsets of Singaporeans are when demands for free speech and freedom of assembly are considered "extremist". In any other first world country these would be taken for granted as fundamental rights.

What else is "extremist"? Wearing a T-shirt that says "Tak Boleh Tahan"? Giving out fliers in universities? Standing alone in front of the Istana holding a placard? If all these are considered "extremist" acts, then Singaporeans have political views are way off the ordinary spectrum. It is even worse when a member of the Opposition thinks this way.

It takes one extremist to recognize himself cloned among other groups...

    I'm still reading but commenting..
  • Uncle Ver SG - "Extremist"
The Lianhe Zaobao had better worry about their own circulation as no one over the age of 18 and under the age of 40 and (heterosexual) male reads that crap Ba Gua tabloid. Its only for people who want to find out Stefanie Sun, Jay Chou etc. is going out with who. It is not a "serious" newspaper that have top notch writers making weighty, nuanced arguments in their editorials on politics, nor does it publish detailed business articles, not to mention the fact that it is a state (PAP) owned newspaper. Such is the standard of Chinese of the island state.

SDP's articles are all culled from respectable, more independent foreign newspapers and news agencies. If their editorials and articles are deemed to be extremist to the some people, it simply reflects the frog in the well mentality of those people and of their own radical political positions.

I have to agree there are a lot of extremist opinions on SDP website, all of which are coming from PAP Internet brigade. There are even more extremist forums such as SGforums where racist PAP supporters routinely blare out their rhetoric.

    1) Yes, indeed SDP has a obvious agenda. Which is to enlighten the public, dig up facts which will otherwise stay hidden. IFIFIFIFIF wat u see on SDP is true, u will realise tat MSM (Main Stream Media) actually lies or publish articles in a misleading light. (No Comments on Frequeny)(Check out Mr Wang's out blog too)

    2) Amusement no, Entertainment yes, Education yes. Daily i learn more about this about that. Things that i won't learn about normally.

    3) "relevant in an increasingly irrelevant envrionment". I assume u mean tat SDP's position is not relevant in current society standing base on the fact that the situation is in "good hands/control". Think again. If u still believe the situation is good, i'm happy for you. But i still pity those in dire situations.

    4) R u really Tan Ah Kow or just someone that the MSM (Main Stream Media) reported as "Cowards who hide behind their nicks"? (MSM was reporting on the fact that Bloggers hide behind a nick and do not have to take responsibility for their words/articles.) U r that right?

PS: I hope that i'm in a neutral position but i feel a shift, else i wouldn't ve posted a single thing.

PS2: In no way am i saying that SDP will make a great ruling party, but i do sincerely feel that there's a need to be opposition.

EG: Even in a small group activity, if everyone just follows the leader, when the leader makes mistake, everyone dies.

EG: When riding bike, the pillon needs to make a effort to stay alert, in most accidents riders survive while pillon dies as the riders are alert and able to react whereas pillons r just throw from the bike.

So in our current context, Opposition are here to keep things in check. Fight for unreasonable pay raise, or fight for reasonable pay raise and many many many many many more issues that r not checked.
  • AnnA - Getting Worried
Someone must be feeling worried and burdened somewhere in Singapore... resorting to making this news no matter how irrelevant the news can be... but however this someone is trying hard by incriminating SDP, it seems like the method is backfiring that someone, again and again... People's Avarice Pythonidae have made grave mistakes many a times...

    LoL

Really? I thought the motherland would be disinterested in Singapore politics and they have to navigate through the Great Firewall to get to a US hosted website. After all we are no HK. I would have thought more Malaysians would have visited SDP website.
  • Michael Chan - Can give average absolute figs of visitors per day
Thanks Mr John Tan.....U R one of my political heroes!
But I wld appreciate if you cld also provide us the number of hits per day from your blog bean-counter say in the last few days? Average?
This is to compare with the sale per day of STimes. Of course there is no comparison as the latter also provides home/world news, obits, adverts, etc etc. I'm here thinking of Malaysiakini up north or even bangkokpost.com. I'm sure in the future the sdp blog can grow from strength to strength to even be an online daily paper.
I met Jayakumar by chance (like u, remember?) 2 weeks ago. I was abt to repeat yr cynical query to him abt his humongous salary when he quickly walked off after shaking my hand. My rhetorical question was left hanging mid-way....I think he must have suddenly recognised me as one of the rabble-rousers from the opposite side. Or maybe I resembled you? Must be playing in his subconscious mind.
Thanks and best wishes to SDP and the bravehearts upholding its principles!

Percentages may be higher. But 41.8% of a wider pool of people may very well trump 77% of a much smaller audience eh? I think more calculations have to be done before you come to that superficial conclusion.

Anyways, keep up the good work guys!

OMG. It could be true after all.

When Goh Meng Seng left the Workers Party a couple of years ago. There were many commentators criticizing him calling him a traitor, a PAP plant. Many who knew him caution about associating with him.

Goh Meng Seng for all we know could be working for a certain PAP govt apparatus -- a deep deep under cover mole.

Dont forget job vacancies, Singaporeans' favorite section of the State Times. Is circulation and sales increasing or stagnant or dropping as people are just too lazy to cancel their subscription? ST World news copy and paste from Reuters etc. I want those news I go online straight to the source, not via middleman.

I didnt know that SDP blog was an online newspaper, like Malaysiakini. I suppose bad publicity is better than no publicity, although I am sure that Lianhe Zaobao did not publish SDP's website address, more people (under 18 and over 40) disenchanted with the government now know that SDP has a website with alternative news sources and google for it.

Since Malaysiakini is so popular by the way (apparently in Singapore as well), when is ST going to buy over Malaysiakini to boost its flagging subscription number?
I thibk both 聯合早報 and Goh Meng Seng are telling lies to boost their popularities.
Nothing will boost their popularity. Not even useless PAP propogandists who resort to libel.

To PAP supporters, the man below is a moderate mature freedom fighter, not a radical terrorist, like Osama bin Laden is to some Muslims. To me, he is what I detest most about PAP and its coddling of radicals and terrorists.

    From Wikipeidia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chin_Peng

    "
Chin Peng was born in late October, 1924, into a middle class Hokchia (hanyu pinyin: Fuqing) family in the small seaside town of Sitiawan, in Perak state, Malaya. His father had come to the town in 1920 and started a bicycle, tyre, and spare motor parts business with the help of a relative from Singapore. [1] He attended a Chinese-language school in Sitiawan. In 1937 he joined the Chinese Anti Enemy Backing Up Society (AEBUS), formed that year to send aid to China in response to Japan's aggression against that country. According to Chin and Hack, he was not yet at that time a devoted communist. [2] He was in charge of anti-Japanese activities at his school. Initially a supporter of Sun Yat-sen, by early 1939 he had embraced communism. He planned to go to Yan'an, the renowned Communist base in China, but was persuaded to remain in Malaya and take on heavier responsibilities for the Party there.

    ...

This initial resistance by the Communist Party of Malaya eventually erupted into full hostility, and developed into a form of a civil war, which became the Malayan Emergency that lasted for twelve years until 1960. In 1960 Chin Peng wished to give up the armed struggle, but, after travelling to China, was told by Deng Xiaoping that South-East Asia was ripe for Revolution. The CPM maintained a theoretical armed struggle for decades after. The death toll eventually climbed into the thousands. Those sympathetic to Chin Peng tend to portray the violence perpetrated by the CPM as defensive, while right-wing opponents tend to portray it as aggressive and unethical. During the Cultural Revolution the CPM was split into three factions and Chin Peng ordered purges resulting in mass trials and many summary executions.

    ...

Chin Peng has lived in exile in southern Thailand and has also given lectures in the National University of Singapore.
    ..."

What is CSJ compared to this moth****cker?

The newspaper article really said this site has extremist viewpoints... WOW!!! LOL!!

So the next step for PAP & Lee to take is to say this is a terrorist "axis of evil". xD
  • yoursmellyfriend
i agree with tan ah kow.

i'm always here for entertainment and to a very large extent, amusement.

the articles written here do indeed give us a very different perspective. kudos to you writers (i think you guys write really well)

however, to the relevancy of the information, i believe what's said is often skewed with an agenda. i'm not saying that the pap's reflection of the current situation is always right. but sometimes, when you're over bearing on certain issues, the value of the article tends to be diminished.

oh well. if you ask me, great literature isn't the genre of the masses - joke books are. and likewise, so is this site.

The biggest jokes being posters such as yourself, with nicknames like yoursmellyfriend, making comments to easily scoff at, then forget.

While SDP site is losing readership, GMS is losing his pant.

Just joking only, more likely GMS just happen to lose his pant when SDP is losing its readership
  • connectfromjapan - SDP connect as far as Japan
I visit SDP website regularly from Japan. I even know their website have been down for last 3 days.

Losing readers, I do not think so. SDP website may have worldwide readers instead.

    Keep updating please.
  • tunkudon
main media are the one really losing reader , their news become more and more rubbish and more pp are quitting job there
  • L - Interesting website of all times
I find this website is merely bringing out issues that are happening around singapore in which those people fail to see it due to the well filtered media created in this environment.

The government is isolating itself from the people and is establishing things that are mostly irrelevant to the needs of the people.

The ministers with extreme high paid? They are like a bunch of sick harvesters harvesting the poor civilians hard work monies.

Now the best part 4.8 millions people roaming the island like a canned sardines. Why the government fails to notice it? Because they are too busy smelling each other S and the $$$$ are clogging their pathetic noses.
  • L - The extremists?
Probably the Singapore Media Corp and so should change their logos to PAP ones, that looks better.

LKY is a monster no no no ...... he is a hero to the $$$$$$ $ucking demons....... their beloved one and only Singapore Idol of the pain in the butt........when is he going to get a big house with tons of soil on top of it?
  • Sporean in China
I quote: "...Singaporeans, with 41.8% from China. PAP, on the other hand, has 77% of its visitors who are Singaporeans."

I love Singapore so much to want to know a BALANCE account/reporting of the political, financial and social events happening in Spore.

On the other hand, I am making my bread and butter here in China.

Please don't think that all that 41.8% are made up of China chinese.
