John TanIsrizal Shaffi'ieSingapore Democrats

Three activists, including SDP's assistant secretary-general Mr John L Tan, will be charged for contempt of court.

Attorney-General Walter Woon will commence contempt proceedings against Mr Tan, Mr Isrizal Bin Mohamed Isa and Mr Muhammad Shafi'ie for wearing T-shirts with a picture of a kangaroo wearing a judge's robe.

A statement on the AG's Chambers' (AGC) website stated that the three men were photographed wearing the T-shirts outside the Supreme Court during the defamation hearing between Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Mr Lee Hsien Loong and the SDP from 26-28 May 08.

The Singapore Democrats' website is cited by the AGC for reproducing the photograph of the three activists wearing the T-shirts. The photograph appeared in an SDP report of the police investigation. The statement said that the article and photograph were meant to give “wider publicity to the allegation that the Court was a kangaroo court.”

But the photograph and a report first appeared in the Straits Times the day after the activists appeared outside the courthouse. The SDP only reported about the police investigation on 27 Jul 08, a full two months after the Straits Times story was published. But the AGC's statement makes absolutely no mention of the newspaper and its photograph.

For its part, the Straits Times in its report today kept very quiet about the photograph it published on 27 May.

AG Woon adds that Messrs Tan, Isrizal and Shafi'ie “have engaged in a deliberate and calculated course of action to impugn the reputation of and undermine public confidence in the Singapore Judiciary, and to lower its authority in the administration of justice in Singapore.”

The statement also indicated that Mr Tan had said to Mr Lee Kuan Yew: “This is a kangaroo court.”

The AGC took pains to point out that under common (English) law, the courts have the power to punish persons for contempt and added that “unlike in many other countries (including England and Australia), the Attorney-General is not a politician.” In Singapore he is appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.

• Jaslyn - Things will get worse, before it gets better...
Who is next on the chopping board for AGC?

The AGC is disregarding the fact that their boss on national TV and on National Day mentioned that they are liberalizing freedom of speech / protest (or whatever), but they on the other hand, are persecuting SDP / activists for speaking up.

I strongly believe, their action will not deter many of us from speaking up, in fact, for things to get better, it will need to get worse first..

Let them test the patience of my fellow citizens.

To my fellow citizens, how long more are you willing to live in this oppressive LEEgime?

well... we can only hope the 3 of them can be bunk mates in prison.

• AnnA - Who is AGC bluffing ?
"IF" the courts here are truly independent and just, what's there to fear about anyone trying to impugn the reputation of and undermine public confidence in the Singapore Judiciary, and to lower its authority in the administration of justice in Singapore ?

The TRUTH already speaks for itself. Kangaroo court is kangaroo court, you can't deny it.
• ah beng - it is A KANGAROO court
Say what they want, they know it themselves. Charging people wearing T-shirts with kangaroos in a judge robe is already an indication of being a kangaroo court. The government is making fools out of themselves.. people in other countries are laughing at such foolish behaviour. No wonder foreign friends hated S'pore.

Australia must now act to regain their national animal trade !
Kangaroo is native and distinct to Australia. Did the gov claim copyright and IP on Kangaroo ? Did the gov trademark Kangaroo animal ? What right do gov has for preventing people from wearing Kangaroo T-shirt ?

I love kangaroo, does that means I cannot express my love for kangaroo by wearing T-shirt showing kangaroo ?

Only the government can love kangaroo and been one, the rest cannot ?

"Attorney-General is not a politician"

Oh, I believe that, just like MM, PM is not a politician and is not partisan !

My ass ! Take my fart !

ah beng ,
cannot blame our government, perhaps they have trademarked the Kangaroo picture and word, and therefore need license and permission to use the trademark.

Maybe there is a reason for trademarking kangaroo since the PAP has such a bad reputation, a new name will erect better image. I surmise that they will be contesting the election under the new name, Kangaroo Party.

Who knows if you want to get a free T-shirt with Kangaroo, you need to vote for the Kangaroo party in next election.

• seaporter - What is a kangaroo court?
A kangaroo court or kangaroo trial, sometimes likened to a drumhead court-martial or Drumhead trial, is a sham legal proceeding or court. Kangaroo courts are judicial proceedings that deny due process rights in the name of expediency. Such rights include the right to summon witnesses, the right of cross-examination, the right not to incriminate oneself, the right not to be tried on secret evidence, the right to control one's own defense, the right to exclude evidence that is improperly obtained, irrelevant or inherently inadmissible (e.g. hearsay), the right to exclude judges or jurors on the grounds of partiality or conflict of interest, and the right of appeal. The outcome of a trial by "kangaroo court" is essentially determined in advance, usually for the purpose of providing a conviction, either by going through the motions of manipulated procedure or by allowing no defense at all.

So by suing the innocents and sealing the lips of truth and the tongue of justice, the court is already performing kangaroo stunts. It's a laughing matter to the world in this financial turmoil. How can we face the world and foreigners on the coffee tables when our own justice system is so wayang. I think Sinkapore is sooner than what it seems. Any discount for the Chees in this economic recession. There is NO MORE HOPE for Sinkapore!#&@^&)# I am resigned!

Been charged for wearing kangaroo t-shirt??? What a bunch of faggots PAP are!!! I could feel the fear in LKY right now, the fear of losing everything before he dies. I'm sure he knows that he will lose everything after he dies and people will curse him for generations to come. But he's wishing that he don't need to face it while alive.

I have no respect for this despicable creature and my fear for him is becoming thinner and thinner everyday. I look forward to the day when no Singaporean is going to fear LKY. Eventually, that day will arrive.
• seaporter - Kangaroo Court
This is the kangaroo court:
AGC: I saw that you are wearing a kangaroo t-shirt to court.
Activist: Oh, I bought it during my Australia holiday. I like it a lot.
AGC: But why is it that you have to wear it today?
Activist: I just feel like it. Kangaroo is my fave animal. It's agile and quick in boxing. Didnt you know?
AGC: Do you know that wearing a kangaroo shirt is a contempt of court?
Activist: I don't understand what you are saying. Can you explain?
AGC: You are indirectly saying the court is a kangaroo court.
Activist: I don't think so. Kangaroo is a good sporting animals.
AGC: Now I want you to remove your kangaroo t-shirt.
Activist: You want us take off our shirt and be naked?
AGC: Yes, else I will charge you for insulting the Singapore courts.

PS: If Singapore court is not a kangaroo court, then they need not be concerned with people wearing a kangaroo. So surely they admit that this is all wayang for the PAP.

We are really becoming the laughing stock of the civilized world !

1. There are many different interpretations of "Kangaroo court".

2. How would the reputation of Singapore's judiciary be impugned by 3 jokers wearing kangaroo T-shirts ???

3. Why waste precious taxpayers' money on such a trivial issue when Mas Selamat is still at large ???

If it is, why are there so many people over here mentioning about "x-y-z this" and "x-y-z that"?? (x-y-z being a politician or member of the judiciary).

I'm American and was in Singapore several years ago. I follow elections in other countries and am fascinated by LKY's record of suing for libel every opponent and publication that criticizes him. I have seen LKY speak in one televised interview here, but it was not with mainstream media. He's well respected in the West but only because economic success is well respected, no matter how it is achieved. It's clear that the tactics of the PAP are dodgy, but what is most damning is that other than economic success, there is little else about which to boast.

Singapore has always been a strategic ally of the West, and kudos to the PAP for fending off Communism fifty years ago-- it's too bad Communism is no longer a threat. (Racial tension appears to be a non-issue, but I'll end my comments there.) The world is too interconnected and the economic success of Singapore will guarantee corporate/financial stability-- the next phase is social stability and a progressive democratic government.

Best of luck :)
• Dissapointed Citizen - What's Your Wish For Singapore
Dear Readers,

I am very upset over the dictatorship our old man has imposed over people even wearing a kangeroo t-shirt. If such act will also be charged, why are we still staying in such a bullied society where the ruling party hammered your very least rights to wear what you want.

The furture of Singaporeans is blink and despire. The society has become so selfish and artificial. There is no more love and care for each other, even to siblings and friends. All are gone, this is the result of the system back home, the care only for his/her own pockets.

Recently I have got to know two young girls students on flight while I made a trip back for meeting. Guess what's are their answers when asked what they are going to do after they graduated, their reply to me is to migrate. Find a place elsewhere, to get a job and strat their life overseas.

There is no more roots in them. I can't blame them as the ruling party has made it very tough to survive in Singapore. Even young people also know the facts and thruth of living in Singapore.

The recent financial turmoil has unvailed many of the wrong investments decisions made by the ruling parties, primarily headed by the daughter-in-law. Our $$$ is gone and washed away by the western counterparts. Many facts are kept from the dark, where Singaporeans are well tammed and easily bullied, I wonder what will happen next to the economy. In bad times, the Govt will tell you to prepare the tough rights ahead and during the ND rally, they have said there will be more good and prosperous year ahead. All are bull shits just to keep themselves in power.

There are many real facts and figures in real life that there are many people suffering back in our motherland, but the facts and truths are covered.

There is no fair justical system back home. The tyrans are runnning our country. The only change for our fellow Singaporeans is hoping that the govt will be overtuned and a new party will take over to make Singapore a better place to stand, not say to stay.

My bigger wish for Singapore is that our present ruling party will stop making a fool out of themselves as the world is also watching us. Don't just talk only (or NATO) and bring a better life for all Singaporeans.

My heart is gone elsewhere.

Charging them for "contempt of court" in order to protect the reputability of our courts?

But how would it do so?

Reminds me of those days when my father would beat me in ways and for reasons I thought was unfair and bullying. Once or twice, I said so to him.

But instead of reassuring me, say by explanation and examples, as to the honourability of his intention and action as a parent, he beat me even more severely, presumely thinking that was the way to reassert his authority and regain my respect.

But the effect was to make me, and neighbours too (some of whom occasionally came over to plead my cause against him) to disrespect him even more.
• Clear eyed - Kangaroo court status confirmed
In a real court presided over by real judges, the sight of 3 men wearing T-shirts with the picture of a kangaroo in judge's robe would have elicited nothing more than smiles or chuckles of amusement. Charging them for contempt of court just confirms their status as kangaroo courts and also their feelings of fear and insecurity that many are aware of the truth.

I think when the Old Geezer is gone, he might erect barb-wires around his grave and place sentry 24/7 there.

Why? Because he might be scared of people coming to and defile/vandalise his tombstone, going by all the furore that's happening now. If he's that clean as he claimed to be and always trying to 'protect' this farce reputation, he need not be afraid of that, isn't it?

Heroes like JBJ Sir need not be afraid of such things but villians like the old geezer will be overly-suspicious of every little single thing.

End with a quote from the movie Braveheart, about Scotland's patriot saint: " Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just ONE chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... similarly, can i call your mother names if i don't like how your mother look?

if can, can we start go round judging people from their outside appearances?

seems like that's what the supreme judges are implying.

and it maybe true some of these women who dressed sexily are in deed sluts, but does that give us the farting right to judge them, does it?

these supreme judges are flesh and blood just like all of us. from the court preceding, if most were to be honest, they would have to conclude that all these years of having educated our lawyers in the finest universities has only proven one thing and that is, it has produced judges of unsound and sick minds( since the judgment represents all of them and none of their kind stood up to protest)?

even a humble hawker can judge better?

what does this mean to future development of society?

“And now this admonition is for you, O priests. If you do not listen, and if you do not set your heart to honor my name,” says the LORD Almighty, “I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not set your heart to honor me.

The lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction—because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty. But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the LORD Almighty.

The kangaroo is a perfectly respectable animal, and the phrase "kangaroo court" as it is commonly understood woefully maligns it.

It is my opinion that the three protestors had not congregated there to insult the high court, but merely to express their love for the kangaroo and to show that kangaroos, too, can be just and fair animals and have been unfairly treated by the usual negative interpretation of the phrase "Kangaroo Court", and they should be honoured just as the high court judges are (indeed, the Australians should make Contempt of Kangaroos an offence!).

There is therefore NO mens rea for the offence and the prosecution's case must fail.
• Pastor Pritam Singh - Lessons From Biblical History
Your father made life hard for us—worked our fingers to the bone. Give us a break; lighten up on us and we’ll willingly serve you.”

King Rehoboam talked it over with the elders who had advised his father when he was alive: “What’s your counsel? How do you suggest that I answer the people?”

They said, “If you will be a servant to this people, be considerate of their needs and respond with compassion, work things out with them, they’ll end up doing anything for you.”

But he rejected the counsel of the elders and asked the young men he’d grown up with who were now currying his favor, “What do you think? What should I say to these people who are saying, ‘Give us a break from your father’s harsh ways—lighten up on us’?”

The young turks he’d grown up with said, “These people who complain, ‘Your father was too hard on us; lighten up’—well, tell them this: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. If you think life under my father was hard, you haven’t seen the half of it. My father thrashed you with whips; I’ll beat you bloody with chains!’”

Rehoboam turned a deaf ear to the people. God was behind all this, confirming the message that he had given . . . . . When all Israel realized that the king hadn’t listened to a word they’d said, they stood up to him and said, Get lost, David! We’ve had it with you, son of Jesse! Let’s get out of here and fast! From now on, David, mind your own business.

And with that they left. Rehoboam continued to rule only those who lived in the towns of Judah.

When King Rehoboam next sent out Adoniram, head of the workforce, the Israelites ganged up on him, pelted him with stones, and killed him. King Rehoboam jumped in his chariot and escaped to Jerusalem as fast as he could.

Israel has been in rebellion against the Davidic dynasty ever since. 2 Chronicle 10

I have to say this because this is a political side. Issues related with everyone's daily lives. The same thing that is happening to different people with various faith.

I have a whole lot of religion history in my knowledge to share with and certainly not to be in this website.

I don't mean to say on behalf of SDP. Sorry, but I have to tell you, these type of comment is boringlah.

Humbly Yours

• Mark Davis - Loosing Credibility
Why is it that everytime the justice depertment (AG, judges etc ...) try to impress upon us (the thinking masses) that they are credible, they make themselves less credible.

Justice should not only be done but shown to be done.
If this is done, there should not be any credibility problem.
But looking at the why they are loosing credibility, means that they are not being just.

Sorry, AG and Judges, but you are damaging your own credibility individually and collectively making the whole justice department loose its credibility faster and irreversibly.

Please, for you own sake and for the country, stop the nonsense.
• Me - I want to be a Democrat!
Actually there's one particular group of people who do not fear LKY. They are fiercely independent and unafraid. They are called Democrats of Sinkapoor.

They do not fear LKY. The old man is more afraid of this group of like-minded Democrats. His useless son is even more a coward... hiding behind the skirt of his bullying daddy. When daddy is dead and gone, loony son will become even more fearful. Maybe he will hide behind the skirt of Belinda Ang?

A couple of years back police were investigating even students regarding white elephant on placards and T-shirts.

Now AG wants to charge people for wearing T-shirts with kangaroos on it.

Don't these people have nothing else better to do?

Rather than Dr Chee, it should be these PAP loonies that must have their mental health thoroughly check.
• gosingapore - What is the crime here?
See what would happen if all the supporters wear the same t-shirts on the hearing day outside the court, maybe hundreds or thousands out there including adults and infants, can they charge all of them? and what crime will the charge be?
• someone sad - singapore...go and compare.
I think the situation in Singapore now is really bad.

I've lived overseas for the past few years now and all I see and hear online about Singapore is about more poor people here and there, lack of freedom. etc.

Many people said that the old man is great, blah blah, cuz without him we wouldn't have the current Singapore that we have now.

Thing is. Compare the Singapore now and the kampung days then. Which would you live in now? Assuming if the old man didn't succeed then, and assuming nobody else did a better job than him, would Singapore be a kampong island still?

You know, even if it is still a kampong island now, I wouldn't mind. No jobs, farm everyday for food, no money for anything, its the same thing now isn't it?
• I love Australia!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What if - just what if - it is indeed a kangaroo court. Do we have an avenue to voice that out? Who do we rely on to voice that out?

The same people who instituted the kangaroo court? Interesting.

Just what if only. I said "what if"... I am supposing only. Yea, a figment of my imagination only.

Silenced lamb.

I can bet my head that the Lees are wetting their pants right now...

We shall overcome
Attorney-General Walter Woon will commence contempt proceedings against Mr Tan, Mr Isrizal Bin Mohamed Isa and Mr Muhammad Shafi'ie for wearing T-shirts with a picture of a kangaroo wearing a judge's robe.
A people gets its just desserts - just look at what/who you have been voting in for the last 47 years.

Never mind if you haven't voted before, haven't the chance to vote (because of walkovers), because your equally - if not more - guilty forebears and earlier generations put Lee into power election after election, culminating in the butt-of-the-world's-major-jokes-over-the-millenia kind of system he then put in place for all you sad, pathetic Singaporeans.
the Attorney-General is not a politician.” In Singapore he is appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.
Yea? CRAP!

He was a politician before, that WALT-DISNEY-ER WOON. Unelected, Government-appointed MP at that - shameless; times were bad and the professor needed that extra bit of all of $1,500???

And a very screwed-up parliamentarian at that too - having wrecked his brain to drain it of its juices just to come up with something called?

Yes, the Parents' Maintenance Act, or something akin to that.

Hasn't time spent reading law, being in the law circuits taught him anything??? That even alimony laws won't guarantee the man paying his divorced wife a cent if he doesn't plan to at all.

And they have now rewarded him by making him AG, hahaha.
