Singapore Democrats

"Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty we're free at last!" And so the prescient words of the American Negro spiritual cascaded from the lips of Martin Luther King Jr.

1963 was a time when the civil rights leader inspired a generation of Americans to overcome injustice with truth, oppression with defiance, hate with love. He appealed to the “better angels” of his fellow Americans.

That same year in Singapore Mr Lee Kuan Yew ordered the mass arrests of his political opponents as the crackdown against democracy went into full swing under Operation Cold Store.

Forty-five years later, as the US swears in Mr Barack Obama as its 44th President, Dr King's vision of an America where all can “sit down together at the table of brotherhood” is fulfilled.

Forty-five years later in Singapore, Minister for Home Affairs Wong Kan Seng announces that the police will be given even more powers to crackdown on peaceful protests.

And while two million people will descend on Washington DC to share and rejoice in the new President's inauguration, there are secretive whispers here in Singapore that a general election might be called sometime this year.

While President Obama calls on his election opponent, Senator John McCain, to join him in a bipartisan effort to carry out the nation's work, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wondered out loud what was the best way to fix the opposition and buy votes.

Over and over Americans talk of this historic day of an African-American becoming their leader. They cannot hide their pride. All over people are talking about a renewed sense of patriotism, a new hope that will see them through these difficult times.

At home there is little pride. Cynicism, apathy and alienation reign. Citizens, young and old, profess no love for this country and want to leave it.

The new President promises his people that he will consult them and be transparent in his dealings with the nation. He promises them that America will endure because Americans “believe in what this country can be."

The PAP tells us that without foreigners we will not survive. This comes after half-a-century of uninterrupted one-party rule. Mr Lee Kuan Yew warns us that without its control we will crumble and our “women will become maids in other people's countries."

This is the difference between the rule of freedom and the rule by fear. One motivates, the other decimates.

Freedom brings forth hope, fear breeds cynicism.

Freedom fosters creativity, fear demands conformity.

With freedom comes patriotism, with fear comes antagonism.

The white community were fearful that if black people were given freedom and equality, chaos and crime would escalate. Dr King sought to dispel such an untruth. White America looks back today and see how foolish they have been.

Singaporeans are told that given freedom of speech and assembly, chaos and turmoil would engulf our country. We know that this is untrue. Let us not wait another 50 years to find out how foolish we have been.

  • Disappointed Citizen - Finally It Happens In America, But Not In Singapor
    Dear All,

Today ihe world awaits the big day not just for America, but the whole world that stands tall and proud for America as it witness a historic moments of a new Black President of the United States of America.

Such ocassion is by large witnessed by the great audience including myself, a Singaporean but overseas.

It embarked new hope for democracy, views and opinions of the daily life matters and how to make it's people better and improving lives.

Singapore on the other hand, under the PAPzzz..., is trying to oppress and suppress its citizens over some passive protests on the forthcoming OPEC submit to be held in Singapore.

I love my country, serve the Singapore Arm Forces (SAF) and is robbed off a good job for being a reasonable guy, for disagreeing to the tyrannic run govt and its policies.

I am watching Obama Inaugural Ceremony with pride on TV live overseas, with tears drops from my soft heart to think when that day will come for Singapore. A country where the top officials will care and see the better lives of fellow Singaporeans and resolve their daily struggle for life. To see the "set-on-fire" incident on its lawmakers will not re-occur, thanks to the elites PAP officials.

Good luck my fellow Singaporeans, only with changes in this present Lee Legacy will see that day come true. We must fight on for ourselves, only we can.

Go, Go and Go Further, and Stronger. SDP and Democracy!

Who really love this Singapore? This country has no soul or core values? This place feels dead and cold even at 34 degress. Remember "ugly singaporeans"? Ever notice how a dog resembles its owner? If the people at the "top" in this country are unfeeling, lacking human understanding and compassion, what are the chances that the people are different? What a waste of 43 years of nation building. All in vain. 43 years of nation bashing, if you ask me.

As I write this, I'm cannot wait for the three more hours to witness President-elect Obama become President Obama.

With the President's impending visit during APEC, I believe that there could be an opportunity here to raise the profile of the reform movement in Singapore.

I don't know exactly what needs to be done - a petition to the White House, a letter writing campaign, etc - but could we not initiate something so that President Obama could make the time to grant Dr Chee and others in the SDP an audience amid his likely busy schedule?

This is hardly unusual that leaders of a country also have a dialogue with the leader of the opposition (i.e. the leader of the reform movement).

Is it time for us to seize the movement?

While I am watching the inauguration of Obama, I wonder when the same will happen to Singapore. Today, in Social Studies lesson, I argued with my teacher, who was pro-PAP, about Good Governance and Meritocracy. He gives the same reason Lee Kuan Yew gave that we would not be here if not for the PAP. I just can't understand why some people are like that.

Wow, you are good at this age. Not many understands like you do at this age.

Tell your teacher that he must have forgotten that God exist. If he is an atheist, just remind him that he didn't owe his oxygen to breath from PAP. Tell him also that lands are created for everyone. Everybody has the right on it.

    Peace, viper. :)

Yes vipersonic, Singapore would not be here as an authoritarian state if not for the PAP. Haha.

    To: Vipersonic,

The PAP Govt has created a pool of followers like your teacher who did not teach you the right path of learnings. Your teacher is one of those on the streets carved by the PAPss and its policies to brainstorm students like yourself on how good this dirty Harry is to make what Singapore is today.

Imagine after your graduations, and if you can't find a substainable job that bring you good income to feed yourself and your aged parents; will the Govt help you in this manner.

You will only be wiser and stronger after you go to the workforce. Life is not so simple afterall in Singapore context.

    Cheers

To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist...Barrack Obama 20/1/2009[/b][/b]
