Singapore Democrats

Singapore Democrats' Assistant Secretary-General John Tan has called for  international organisations to monitor elections Singapore, given the way that polls are run by the PAP Government.

Mr Tan made this appeal during the 3rd World Forum for Democratisation in Asia (WFDA) entitled "Sustaining Democratization in Asia: Challenges of Economic and Social Justice" which was held a week ago in Seoul, South Korea. Human rights activist Mr Seelan Palay also attended the conference.

Dr Chee Soon Juan was one of the speakers during the opening eceremony. As he was unable to travel, the SDP leader spoke via Internet teleconference. He emphasized the need for political activists and politicians to step up efforts to entrench democracy in the region.

Mr Jose Ramos-Horta, President of East Timor, and Mr Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj, President of Mongolia, were among the other speakers during the opening ceremony.

Presenting a paper at a session, Mr John Tan urged the international community to send monitors to Singapore during its next election which is speculated to occur in 2010. He emphasized that there was no independent election commission, and that polls were run by the Prime Minister's Office.

With the media also at the beck and call of the ruling party, Mr Tan pointed out, it was no wonder that elections are a foregone conclusion with many seats going uncontested because few people dare to join the opposition.

Mr Tan also spoke about the "weaponization of the law" to suppress democracy in Singapore. The PAP Government continued to pass laws to stifle the civil liberties of the Singaporeans. One example was the Public Order Act which was introduced this year to effectively prevent even one person from conducting a protest.

The SDP assistant secretary-general added that it was important for Singapore to ratify the United Nations' International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) as well as to reform the election system to make it free and fair.

He added that Asian democrats and human rights defenders should come together more strongly to offer mutual support for each other's struggle to establish and entrench democracy in the region.

He also proposed that given the advent of the new media, there should be more training for citizen journalists.

These proposals would be looked into in the months ahead by the WFDA secretariat.

I'm just so disappointed that at the end of the day, instead of trying to use your own influence to make your way into Singaporeans' heart, SDP had continued to walk the TRAITOR'S PATH.

It is so despicable of SDP to always get foreigners involved in local politics, and the more you do so, the more you will be despised by Singaporeans!

Chee Soon Juan had proven himself to be a professional traitor. Now, SDP is a highly professional political party that colludes with foreigners in order for it to gain power...but wishful thinking, if you do not first get Singaporeans' trust and confidence in the first place!

What a shameless bunch of traitors!!!
  • NissanViP - Good move by SDP.
Singapore election needs independent watchdog to ensure there is no foul play in the ballot box.

Ballot box administered by LEE KUAN YEW government cannot be trusted.

Lee Kuan Yew is the true singapore betrayal (including all government personnel)and a traitor to our national pledge.

As far as I have seen, only foreigners adore Lee Kuan Yew and his government.

Nothing more else to say, sad but it is true.

  • Robox - What Indigenous Pride?
Re: "It is so despicable of SDP to always get foreigners involved in local politics..."

Ah, yes. That famous tired and overused line inspired by none other that Lee Kuan Yew.

Don't get 'foreigners involved in local politics' is a false appeal to an indigenous pride that doesn't - and shouldn't - even exist in the first place; if anything Singaporeans only have a bloated national ego accompanied by misplaced arrogance. Further, this was a promulgation that arose against the backdrop of Lee Kuan Yew's Confucianist binge and should be seen for what it is: a base appeal to Chinese chauvinism. Like all other racist impositions on Indians and Malays, this is yet another of multiculturalism's equivalents of the the violation of secularism.

The late JB Jeyaratnam once said: "Lee Kuan Yew is like a banyan tree under which nothing will grow".

Are we not already seeing the truth of his statement?

Indeed Lee Kuan Yew's raison d'etre is disempowerment, beginning with the disempowerment of his own party members. A disempowered people cannot develop their capabilities to the same extent that an empowered people can. Hence the incompetence that is rife in Singapore's governance and administration. Look no further than the Executive, as well as the Judiciary for evidence of what I say. I'm sure the same is true of the Bureaucracy.

If our institutions of State such as the Elections Department cannot function in the capacity that they were set up for, then they are indeed staffed by the incompetent. With incompetence so rife in Singapore, everyone in the Elections Department can be fired today, only to be replaced by more incomptence.

After all, didn't Lee Kuan Yew himself say that foreign workers are needed in Singapore to raise the competence of Singaporeans? What is that if not an admission that despite so much effort and financial input, our output has been far less than proportionate?

Yes, foreigners should in fact 'interfere' in local politics because Singaporeans are not up to the mark by any stretch of the imagination; I too have my doubts about the Elections Department's capability for fair play. This has everything to do with the political system and culture, not the inherent qualities of Singaporeans. If foreigners are whom we have to learn from, then so be it because the goal ought to the learning and not whom we learn from.

At any rate, are there enough Singaporeans around who have the competence that we can learn from? And if there are, can Lee See Yung recommend them to us? (Fascists need not apply.)

  • Low Fuk Loong - SDP is doing the right thing !
Touch your heart, who loves singapore more ?

SDP wants a fair election so people vote for a govt and not a bunch of gamblers !

Traitors ?? Hahaha...take a look at the FT policy !

Shame on them---arent they not traitors ??!!

PAP is using these idiots to vote for them noting the last GE 2006 saw 30 to 40 % voted against them.

Get Voted out could mean death sentence for the PAP monkeys --young or old !

You see , engineered genocide is here in singapore except locals cannot see.
Dont see the guy in white, looks coy and decent, shaking hands and laugh raucous, the evil in him is giving him away.

By next election, if PAP evils still hold sway, local- singaporean singapore is lost forever!!!

Only Informed People all over singapore understand SDP is trying to save singapore .....for those(locals) who are still dreaming......your children or your grandchildren would be lucky to get security jobs in the bleak future.

better hope SDP got all the luck ...if not , singapore is gone to the bloody dogs !!!

Who is the real traitor----think again, and see for yourselves the true evidence everywhere !

You get anything when Temasick profits--let say, one trillion ????

it is too late to roll up your sleeves when singapore is fcuking sold by the monkeys!!!

  • PAP Voter
    My dear Lee See Yung,

TRAITORS are people who act and do against Singaporeans behind our back for their own personal interest. Did our MM Lee and our current President proudly bosted and claimed that they work for the Japanest during the second world world? Why are we having TRAITORS amonst us as our minister and president? Our job is to vote out the TRAITORS. If they can be TRAITORS during the second world war, do you believed they have Singaporeans interest in their heart? They have showed their wolf's head and displaying the wolf's tails what will they be showing next? So NOW do you know who are the TRUE and REAL TRAITORS?
  • Robox - What? No Recommendations From PAP IB?
I see that Lee Kuan Yew's agent, Lee See Yung has absolutely no recommendations to make about which Singaporeans can successfully intervene in the Singapore civil service to increase its woefully pathetic standards. This is not surprising as the only obvious recommendations that have any legitamcy are all outside the PAP's fascist establishment, such as the SDP and other reform-minded Singaporean individuals and organizations.

I repeat: the never-to-be-emulated, pathetically low current standards of the Singapore civil service are due entirely to:

    1. the political system, as well as a political culture rooted in the legal philosophies of feudal China, philosophies that basically remained fossilized* for the remainder of Chinese history after the formulation of those philosophies - this has been midlessly transplanted onto Singapore with other considerations except to medicate Lee Kuan Yew's 'hurt' Chinese chauvinism acquired during his anti-colonial campaign;

    2. the even more pathetic standards of the Executive that directs the civil service, which in turn is a reflection of the same Executive's incompetence in contemporary standards in governance and public administration;

    3. the incompetence of the much vaunted President's scholars a la Imperial Scholar yes-men who fill the ranks of the upper echelons of the civil service; and,

All the above have occurred despite the huge expenses made in terms of human, finacial, and other resources: Singapoeans have been cheated by not getting their money's worth.

    * Among ancient legal philosophies, only the European-based Roman and Greek ones evolved continuously to the point of maximum acceptably to humans all over the world regardless of their ethnic-based culture - China's immigrants to the west, for example, are not complaining about the dignity with which they live in those western countries. Because I am no cultural bigot and willing to give credit where it is due, I will willingly embrace these Western legal philosophies as the ones most suitable for the appetite that humans today have when it comes to State-society relations.

  • BryanT - Pandering to Foreign Organisations
To be fair, Lee See Yung deserves to be chastised for labeling SDP or its leader traitors. By empirical definition, bot the party and its leader have not committed any traitorous acts through asking for international organisations to monitor elections in Singapore.

However, what is objectionable is SDP's basic strategy in resorting to appealing to external organisations and audiences towards its own ends. By "appealing", I am referring to two of the word's common meanings.

Firstly, "appeal" in the sense of of an "entreaty" or plea to foreign and international organisations to intervene in the country's political affairs or publish discrediting reports about it. The intent is to affect the country's reputation, isolate it and/or shame the country. It would then induce external pressure on the government to make changes favourable to opposition parties in general, and more specifically the SDP.

The second meaning of "appeal" referred to is SDP's strategy of raising its own political profile by marketing its "democraticness" internationally. It does this by participating in internal forums and making "holier-than-thou" statements against the government. It would highlight what it perceives as iniquities committed against the political opposition in Singapore and create external perceptions that it is speaking up for the suffering masses here. At the same time, the party hopes to have normal Singaporeans see it rubbing shoulders with renowned organisations, and hence add to its respectability, which is pretty much in deficit here.

The flaw to these strategy is many-fold, but I shall only enunciate a few here.

As they say, "throw dirt enough, and some will stick", and indeed some international audience organisation will eventually form some unfavourable impression of the country. The organisations that SDP pander to will not fail to agree since such organisations are created to address the so-called outrages raised by SDP. Such organisation's existence precisely depends on being fed with such claims. It is immaterial how balanced SDP depicts affairs in the country, and we have come not to expect SDP to be unbiased.

SDP itself adds to the "outrages" by having its members commit offences against the law, get arrested and sentenced accordingly. These cases are themselves held as further examples of the suppression by the government.

However, the irony does not fail to escape some of us -- to substantiate the suppression by the government to the international audience, SDP shapes its own predicament through the breaches of law in order to be seen to be victimised.

Even if there are dirty linens, and obviously every country in the world has its share, the Singaporean population in general does not agree that dirty linen should be washed internationally. The people perceives the SDP as foreign puppets attempting to bring disrepute to the nation and adversely affect its standing on the international stage. It jars against the people's general sense of pride and loyalty in the country, even if they face challenges on several fronts.

Lastly, SDP's heavy reliance on international pressure to change the government is by itself a statement on how it perceives Singaporeans, the raison d'être for the party's existence. It gives the impression to Singaporeans that it cannot trust them to give voice where they see injustices or take action where they see wrong.

In fact, CSJ reinforced this statement in the video on JBJ's death anniversary recently when it accused Singaporeans of indifference . In other words, SDP does not trust the people to elect what it perceives to be the right government, and has to involve foreigners to ensure its aims.
