One of the reasons why Mr Lee continues to resist introducing Minimum Wage is because he lives in constant fear that foreign investors will pull out of the country. He contends that higher wages means higher business costs and higher business costs means less investment.

Such a view was also intimated by Mr George Yeo in his Facebook exchange with Dr Chee Soon Juan. Mr Yeo who was then the Trade and Industry Minister said that high wage levels make investors "go elsewhere." (See here)

This begs the very huge question: Why, after half-a-century of PAP rule, are we still unable to get out of our addiction to foreign capital?

Foremost is the fact that under the PAP's authoritarian control, where the ruling clique and its loyalists remain the sole arbiter and beneficiary of power, entrepreneurship has all but withered. In a dumbed down society, we have no entrepreneurial class to speak of which means that we have no choice but to continue to rely of foreign investors.

Unlike other Asian economies like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, who have nurtured global enterprises of their own, we lack the breath and depth of an innovative economy. Singapore is a glamorised service station for multinational companies, or MNCs.

Because of this reliance on foreign capital we are at the mercy of the corporations who insist on keeping wages - workers' wages, that is - down while maximising their profit margins.

In the meantime, many of our homegrown talent leave for other shores where freedom, both economic and political, beckons.

Mr Lee admits that the exodus of skilled Singaporeans is a "pretty serious" problem. Admitting a problem is one thing, knowing what to do about it is quite another. So what does the Minister Mentor do? He opens the flood gates and calls in 2 million foreigners to come and work on this island.

He tells Singaporeans that these are foreign talent that Singapore cannot do without. According to the MM, our economy would deflate faster than a souffle if we did not take in foreign talent and in such drunken numbers.

Which raises an interesting question: Why is it that after 50 years of an education system that has been chopped, kneaded and cooked by the PAP are we still unable to come up with a talented enough populace to sustain our economy?

In order to continue to provide fuel for its GDP-growth-at-all-cost policy, massive numbers of foreigners - talent or no - are imported into this island. (While doing our walkabout last week, the Singapore Democrats came across a busker in a wheelchair crooning through a microphone. He turned out to be a Chinese national.)

Why? Because foreign workers come cheap. The low cost of living in their home countries compared to Singapore's allows them to accept wages that Singaporeans can't. To employers, especially the MNCs, this is manna from heaven.

In such a scenario is it any wonder that Mr Lee rejects the Minimum Wage policy, no matter how much sense it makes?

Make no mistake, our economy is like an old showgirl. We have to constantly keep ourselves attractive by piling on layer after dreadful layer of economic makeup just to keep ourselves looking attractive for the foreign businessman. Meanwhile the gobs of powder and lipstick hide the ageing rot beneath.

And all this while Mr Lee continues to live in his own detached, sycophantic world where the minions around him treat him as infallible. They, of course, have much to benefit from propping up this decrepit system.

This, coupled with the foreign business community who continue to lavish Mr Lee with praise, makes him impervious to warning signs that the use-by date of the PAP system has long expired.

Actually according to him, he is the Businessman and Singapore is his company with 200 billion dollars worth of cash.
  • BryanT - Why the big difference?
There are several reports about what LKY thinks about the implementation of a minimum wage policy. I found three.

Kent Ridge Common reported that "MM believes that the implementation of minimum wage will lead to structural unemployment as companies will seek to find cheaper means of production, e.g. through mechanization."

Temasek Review reported that "Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had dismissed the minimal wage as a method to reduce the growing income gap between the rich and poor on the island state. In response to a question by a SMU student on what Singapore could do to help its bottom 20 per cent, MM Lee answered that Singapore’s approach has been to create as many jobs as possible, while leaving the market to decide the right type of pay."

ST reported that "having a minimum wage in place here to narrow the income gap could do more harm than good, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said last night. In fact, every country that has set a minimum wage over what the market will bear has found that the move cuts jobs, he noted. Employers who are forced to deal with higher staff costs would simply find ways to hire less people. That is why Singapore's approach has been to create as many jobs as possible, while leaving the market to decide the right level of pay. The rationale for this is that having any job is better than having no job at all."

In contrast, SDP states in this article that "one of the reasons why Mr Lee continues to resist introducing Minimum Wage is because he lives in constant fear that foreign investors will pull out of the country. He contends that higher wages means higher business costs and higher business costs means less investment." I hope SDP can point out to us where it culled this interpretation from.

I hope readers can see the vast dissimilarities.

As such, I'll leave readers here to interpret whether:

    a) Some of SDP's members have mastered the mind-reading skill (on LKY's brain)

    b) The party is resorting to putting words in other's mouths, LKY's specifically.

    c) The party is practising selective reporting to suit its intents.

    d) Or, it is simply deluding itself (and attempting on us) with what it wants to believe.

We need to take a serious look at ourselves as Singaporean, and think clearly and sensibly about what type of people we want in power in Singapore, and not make knee-jerk reactions against those who are trying to do their best for our long-term benefit - reactions which will make them step down in future and force others into refusing to stand up on the issues that need addressing.

Having seen the masses of abuse that SDP receives, the criticism and the claims against them, one would not be surprised if we were to see more along these lines in the future. So what have the cynics gained? Perhaps a lucrative salary that most would warrant the equivalent or more as in the private sector and of course, a heck of a lot of online abuses.

In addition what we are more likely to see, is those people who are not able to conceal properly their own political agendas are also people who cannot take political defeat and who will go so far as to ruin the others to defeat their own perceived injustices.
  • 2brokenankles - Put him out to pasture
Seriously, the man is going to run the less well off half of the population into the ground. No minimum wage? Let employers decide?

How are people ever going to have enough to retire on? Much less pay exorbitant prices for the subsidised HDB flats and health care? I guess he figures as long as the rich are happy the PAP has no worries. He would do well to remember that even a mouse will roar.

He and his Merry Men are taking from the poor to give to the rich. It is the sweat of the ordinary Singaporean worker that fuels the economy. I hope he lives long enough to see his vision for Singapore fade away like a forgettable sunset.

The man is a parody of himself. A coward who now needs to be shielded from tough questions thrown up by students. His whole personna is stage-managed so no one will glimpse his inability to stand up and account for his policies any more.

it just proof how idiot these PAP "scholars" can be

high wage does not make investment goes else where

we have solid proof and evident

Japan has high wages, but investment is strong and firm
US and Europe has high wage and investment is firm

Indonesia and China has low wage, but why foreign investment are not as solid compared to Europe and Japan?

It is so simple a 3 yr old kid can understand.

In any authoritative and high handed governance and corrupt legal system, people get pist-off.

Smart CEO knows, too cheap a labor is for low end low quality production.

How to get more FDI into Singapore? Just get rid of LKY

By the way, any country that depends too much on FDI n tourism is not wise.

So, PAP 'scholars' another stupid problems that need to be fired.

Why LKY pay himself more n more, but demands us citizens get less and less?

    Daylight robbery via Lee system

Everyone loves to hate politicians. They are a much maligned bunch, although sometimes not deservedly so. The irony and reality is that most of the verbal abuse comes usually from fellow politicians.

Opposition politicians engage those in power with semantic minuets of the venomous kind. In turn, opposition politicians are themselves the recipients of a fair share of barbs from observers. As they say, what goes around comes around.

Some politicians (usually those NOT in power) feel that they have been subjected to much injustice propagated by the ruling party. This perception of unfairness is not unjustified (until they themselves come into power).

Being men (or women) of principle, they continue to pursue goals which they believe to be rightful. But faced with a largely brainwashed or disinterested populace who can't identify with these goals, they realise they can't pursue their political agenda too directly.

I am aware I've been going around in circles above. The reason is I noted some truism in what a commenter stated in his last paragraph of his posting. I've edited it slightly, hopefully for an easier read:

"....what we are likely to see, are people who not only can't conceal their political agendas but also are unwilling to accept political defeat. They are out to ruin the others as payback for injustices they perceive done unto themselves."
  • compassion republican - Mini wages
    Here are some interesting facts
Bullet points from President Clinton's statement on raising the minimum wage:
•Would benefit more than 10 million, mostly adult American workers
•Would help hard-pressed families pay for groceries, rent and other necessities
•Would restore the real value of the minimum wage to what it was in 1982
•Economic studies have found no negative impact on employment and can even increase employment (taking notes?)
•Will ensure that all workers can participate in the growing economy
•Past increases have helped reduce welfare caseloads
•Will help ensure that parents can raise their children out of welfare
■90% of countries have adopted minimum wage. Many European countries do not have minimum wage laws. Instead, they rely on employer groups and trade unions to agree on wages through the process of "Collective Bargaining" (S'porean had no laws nor regulations our unions. S'pore had a unique system call "Tripartitism" the Role of the Govt, Trade Union & Employers = Collective Bargaining) Read the book written by a local Tan Chee Wah)
The list below gives the official minimum wage rates in 197 countries and territories including Malayisa & Indonesia and so forth...
Did anyone watch Sky News the postal serivce on strike complain having less staff but end up doing more multuple work. Having more profits, where did the money go ?
  • compassion republican - MM Lee & Obama
Hello, no prize for the outcome of the meeting. Have anyone watch Charlie Rose? The last interview Terrorist are attracted to Iraq to fight b'cos the Amercian are now over there, are your Amercian lives more precious? (The old school of thoughts) will be presented Reaganomics of unlimted free trade, a strong dollar, star wars progamme to counter-balanced Communist Russia & China. Bush doctrine of missle-shield against rouge states...etc all these are "Conseratism Values" Harry once said Vietnam war did slow down the spread of Communism Ideology. Those who still believe "Amercian Presence" in Aisa Paific to "counter balance" the growing threat of China? (this will make Korean, Japanese and especially China very upset) why should Japanese still need "white men" to defend for their own sovereignty. It going to be Obama that going to do the influncing on Liberal values. The new reality on the ground is Asians want to be proud of Asia. Asian can defend our own country without seeking (American/occupying troops) for protection. Asian want a New Model, that trade among each other rather than waiting for Western Consumers. Asian want a common currency. Harry may be loosing touch with the next generation

    MM Lee honoured in US
    By Chua Chin Hon

WASHINGTON - A STAR-STUDDED cast of the US capital's political and business elites turned up to honour Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning Singapore time) as he was awarded a lifetime achievement award for his contributions towards United States-Asean ties.

Three US Presidents - Mr Barack Obama, Mr Bill Clinton, and Mr George H W Bush - sent congratulations via letters and tape-recorded messages, while two elder statesmen - former Secretaries of States Dr Henry Kissinger and Dr George Shultz - were on hand to help Mr Lee celebrate the occassion.

The Minister Mentor is the first recipient of the lifetime achievement award, which the US-Asean Business Council created in conjunction with its 25th anniversary.

About 450 people, decked out in tuxedos and glamorous evening dresses, attended the glamourous event at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

Among those who paid tribute to Mr Lee were Dr Kissinger, Dr Shultz, Senator Jim Webb, and Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

In a statement to The Straits Times, Dr Shultz said: 'Ideas, information, clarity of mind, integrity of purpose. Mr Lee Kuan Yew has all of these characteristics and many more. He is a truly great man who has been a wonderful friend over many years.'
