Singapore Democrats

In our Let's Talk series we interview personalities from the opposition as well as civil society. This week we bring you Dr Wong Wee Nam, a physician who was an opposition candidate in the 1997 general elections. Dr Wong continues to be an active player in the blogging and political circles. In this interview, he talks about the climate of fear in Singapore.

• BryanT - Interesting fella...
Quite a decent interview with Dr Wong.

It would have been interesting to hear his views about the "non-violent" tactics employed by SDP to deliberately break laws, with the mistaken intent of waking up the "selfish" Singaporeans who only care for their "stomachs and shelters".

Or perhaps he might perceive that such tactics would induce more Singaporeans to sink further into the "miserable pathetic situation" where politics is shunned.

Dr Wong reminded us that Singaporeans have no "feel for the community" and no affinity for "abstract things like democracy, justice and equality." If so, CSJ sure has his work cut out for him to rescue the Singaporeans wallowing in indifference.

But at least Dr Wong did not blame the government for the Singaporeans in such a bad "moral state of development." Or maybe he forgot to slip that in..... and CST forgot to posed a loaded question to get this out.
• BryanT - Corrections... apologisations
Apologies, cold weather, two errors.

"Dr Wong did not blame the government for the Singaporeans being in such a bad "moral state of.."

"...and CTL forgot to posed a loaded question to get this out."

Wrote CST accidentally - must have been thinking too much of the "Cut Sand" SMC.

Rambling again, BryanT?

Ramble: To talk or write in a discursive, aimless way.
• g_e - Cold snap or Brain snap?
Clearly the BryanenTitty is rapidly losing the plot, what with horrendous typos, strange sentence constructs, and hilariously entertaining Freudian slips. It's almost as if several people take it in turns to use the nick depending on who's on duty at that moment.

Unfortunately each forgets that the worm has turned, three mice have run up the clock and that the lion sleeps tonight.
• Clear eyed
Hope Dr Wong will take part in the coming election. Hopefully more Singaporeans have become politically aware now and are also less bound by fear.
• BryanT
Where's the beef with the interview with our dear Dr Wong? Or was it so content-less that there are no points worth discussing?

At least "clear-eyed" as clear about his/her opinion. What about the rest of the party die-hards.... apathy perhaps?

Maybe they are holding their breath for the Sec-gen of SDP to give them a pep-talk here on Let's Talk.

Of course, there are those who are devoid of a decent line of discussion, and whose last resort is to relegate themselves to name-calling. How invigorating! But it's best to leave them to continue to dwell at those depths, or at the rear of the class, imagining the zoo of animal turning, running up docks and dozing off.

Again BryanT, you find it so easy to call it content-less, when there clearly are many points of interest in Dr Wong's interview.

But its not surprising coming from you lah, because you love to go out of your way to complain/rant about everything posted on this website.

It's gotten to a point where a personal friend of mine who reads this site tells me he just scrolls past every single comment you make because he too thinks you criticize just for the sake of it.
• BryanT - Let's Talk ....AND Discuss
Seelan, I do not expect everyone to agree with me. And, I suppose your personal friend gives higher regards to the rather repetitive exaltations and congratulations that (used to) appear here from the party supporters from time to time. To others, these can become quite sense-numbing, after a while.

Anyway, I agree that this latest interview raised several interesting points. That was why I quoted a few things mentioned by Dr Wong.

The issue I was trying to raise was that (other that "clear-eyed") nobody has bothered to discuss its content here. If not here, where?

I was beginning to wonder whether the interviews are supposed to provoke some useful discussions, at least in this website. Incidentally, the dearth of discussion happened for the last interview as well.

The "Let's Talk" series raised much expectation initially as a means for SDP to exploit the new media to reach the people. Right now, it just seems to have petered out.

My suspicion is also that the indifference cited by CSJ pervades readers here as well. I hope I can be proven wrong, and that the inactivity here is due to political interest being on holiday season as well.

And surprisingly, Seelan, you did not raise any specific point about the interview as well, even when you said there were many interesting ones.

• Seelan Palay
I don't think there is a need for me to state all the points of interest I found in the interview, especially not to prove anything to you, BryanT.

Anyway, scanning through your entire 'mini-essay' reply, I only see you making 1 point in different ways. No wonder that not many people bother responding to you anymore - they can't even be bothered to spend time reading it.

See how you've made yourself inept, BryanT? Too bad.

Awesome Words

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning.
