Singapore Democrats
As 2009 comes to a close, there are many things that we remember and cherish. But the year 2010 will be even more exciting for the SDP for it is when we turn 30. The SDP was founded in August 1980.
To commemorate the occasion, we will be organising a series of events, starting with a gala dinner entitled An Evening of Dazzle with the Democrats. The dinner will be held on 27 February during which we will launch a commemorative magazine highlighting the party's past and present. You won't want to miss this landmark publication.
Since its inception, the party has seen its fair share of ups and downs. But whatever has happened to us we can hold our heads high because we have not wavered from our stand on democracy. We have not shied away from speaking truth to power for the sake of the people.
2010 will see us continue to develop this website to reach out to even more people. We will not let up in exploring new technologies to expand our capability to spread our message.
With its humble beginnings in 2001 (see here) this website has expanded in content as well as its utility.
But even as we put our heart and soul into our portal, we will not take our foot off the pedal when in comes to groundwork. If anything, 2010 will be a year where spreading our message on the ground will be priority.
It will be a time when we visit the various constituencies around Singapore in anticipation of the general elections. This can only mean one thing: We will be selling yet more copies of our flagship publication The New Democrat.
We recently completed a successful round of newspaper sales where we visited several constituencies and took the opportunity to meet with and listen to residents. While Singaporeans continue to be afraid of openly critising the PAP, they were clearly unhappy with present circumstances.
One memorable occasion witnessed a gentlemen dining at a crowded kopitiam. He asked us to give all the customers there a copy of our newspaper and said that he would pay for all of them. We distributed a total of 47 copies. And get this, the incident happened in the constituency of Teck Ghee, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's ward.
And just like in 2009, we expect more and more Singaporeans to join our ranks, especially the younger generation. Already we have seen a more active Young Democrats and we will put in even more effort to expand our base.
But as sure as the sun rises, the PAP will continue to throw everything at us to stop our momentum and derail our moving forward.
For one thing the criminalisation of legitimate political activity in our courts will not stop. For another, the state media will continue to black out news on us, no matter what we do and how active we are.
But whatever the PAP may throw at us we will meet it the SDP way – with firm resolve and determination. We will not complain, we will not shed tears and we will most certainly not kowtow to the PAP. We will keep our heads up and meet the challenges head on.
In this regard 2010 will not be much different from years past because we will continue to speak up for our fellow citizens who are voiceless and powerless in their own country.
To all our friends have a Happy New Year and meaningful 2010.

Many thanks for all the hard work & sacrifices to bring about true democracy in our country. Or should I say city, our beloved Law Minister said so! If we are only a city, why do we need to pay out-of-this-world salaries to these bloody greedy bunch of MPs??
My wish for 2010 is that more opposition parties (preferably SDP type of opposition) gets elected into Parliament come next GE.
You guys are asking the real hard questions even though it has fallen on deaf ears by our Good-for-nothing MILLION DOLLARS ministers!
Its time for real change. Its time to kick out all the useless MPs whose only motivation in public office is their bank account.
The whole bloody system needs an overhaul before it gets too late. To all those PAPies, bootlickers, don't expect any opposition party to pick up all the PAP shits when real change comes into our shores.
And please don't even attempt to ask for any 'ideas' or 'solutions' in this website when our FIRST WORLD PAP TEAM are paid to provide solutions to our ailing economy, and by the way, some of the policies implemented by PAP, are the results of what we are facing right now. Supporters of PAP should be asking real hard questions on PAP website!
These bloody greedy, useless MPs should be made to account for all their mistakes when we have a change of ruling party in our political office.
No system is perfect, however, given a choice, a democratic system is much better than any system.
Wishing All SDP members a Fruitful & Happy 2010.
