Singapore Democrats

As 2009 comes to a close, there are many things that we remember and cherish. But the year 2010 will be even more exciting for the SDP for it is when we turn 30. The SDP was founded in August 1980.

To commemorate the occasion, we will be organising a series of events, starting with a gala dinner entitled An Evening of Dazzle with the Democrats. The dinner will be held on 27 February during which we will launch a commemorative magazine highlighting the party's past and present. You won't want to miss this landmark publication.

Since its inception, the party has seen its fair share of ups and downs. But whatever has happened to us we can hold our heads high because we have not wavered from our stand on democracy. We have not shied away from speaking truth to power for the sake of the people.

2010 will see us continue to develop this website to reach out to even more people. We will not let up in exploring new technologies to expand our capability to spread our message.

With its humble beginnings in 2001 (see here) this website has expanded in content as well as its utility.

But even as we put our heart and soul into our portal, we will not take our foot off the pedal when in comes to groundwork. If anything, 2010 will be a year where spreading our message on the ground will be priority.

It will be a time when we visit the various constituencies around Singapore in anticipation of the general elections. This can only mean one thing: We will be selling yet more copies of our flagship publication The New Democrat.

We recently completed a successful round of newspaper sales where we visited several constituencies and took the opportunity to meet with and listen to residents. While Singaporeans continue to be afraid of openly critising the PAP, they were clearly unhappy with present circumstances.

One memorable occasion witnessed a gentlemen dining at a crowded kopitiam. He asked us to give all the customers there a copy of our newspaper and said that he would pay for all of them. We distributed a total of 47 copies. And get this, the incident happened in the constituency of Teck Ghee, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's ward.

And just like in 2009, we expect more and more Singaporeans to join our ranks, especially the younger generation. Already we have seen a more active Young Democrats and we will put in even more effort to expand our base.

But as sure as the sun rises, the PAP will continue to throw everything at us to stop our momentum and derail our moving forward.

For one thing the criminalisation of legitimate political activity in our courts will not stop. For another, the state media will continue to black out news on us, no matter what we do and how active we are.

But whatever the PAP may throw at us we will meet it the SDP way – with firm resolve and determination. We will not complain, we will not shed tears and we will most certainly not kowtow to the PAP. We will keep our heads up and meet the challenges head on.

In this regard 2010 will not be much different from years past because we will continue to speak up for our fellow citizens who are voiceless and powerless in their own country.

To all our friends have a Happy New Year and meaningful 2010.

    To All SDP members,

Many thanks for all the hard work & sacrifices to bring about true democracy in our country. Or should I say city, our beloved Law Minister said so! If we are only a city, why do we need to pay out-of-this-world salaries to these bloody greedy bunch of MPs??

My wish for 2010 is that more opposition parties (preferably SDP type of opposition) gets elected into Parliament come next GE.

You guys are asking the real hard questions even though it has fallen on deaf ears by our Good-for-nothing MILLION DOLLARS ministers!

Its time for real change. Its time to kick out all the useless MPs whose only motivation in public office is their bank account.

The whole bloody system needs an overhaul before it gets too late. To all those PAPies, bootlickers, don't expect any opposition party to pick up all the PAP shits when real change comes into our shores.

And please don't even attempt to ask for any 'ideas' or 'solutions' in this website when our FIRST WORLD PAP TEAM are paid to provide solutions to our ailing economy, and by the way, some of the policies implemented by PAP, are the results of what we are facing right now. Supporters of PAP should be asking real hard questions on PAP website!

These bloody greedy, useless MPs should be made to account for all their mistakes when we have a change of ruling party in our political office.

No system is perfect, however, given a choice, a democratic system is much better than any system.

Wishing All SDP members a Fruitful & Happy 2010.

A Happy New Year to you too, SDP!

Thank you for fearlessly hoisting the banner of liberal democracy aloft without once flinching in the face of relentless cannonfire. Kudos for putting the PAP to shame. You have proven time and again that you are truly the only credible opposition in Singapore and a government with integrity in waiting.

I think you have indeed much to be proud of on your 30th Anniversary.

Allow me to wish you all the very best in 2010,

Hello, coming of age for all opposition party

Most important point to make that is for 25 years potong pasir had been under the watch of Mr Chiam See Tong did not become a shanty town, slum dog areas, run down place. Those fear mongers using scare tactics did not worked this is the living prove

The Striat Times weight on "New Media"
Using scare tactics? What is New Media?
In the past we watched black & white tv, to color tv, from 4 channel to starhub 124 cable channels. From small size tv, to big size tv, to flat screen tv. That said, S'porean will still listen to music, read, watch drama in a different device

New Media means everything become "digitalize" or simply put using a New Device that is faster, cheaper, lighter, more option, more features, more choice but most of all propaganda techiniques will come to a free fall

Destroy the old format, Create New Opportunity
Apple itablet (shares will rise, Steve Jobs is very talented at creating New Industries) means more ditigal content available (working with book publishers) Goggle, Kindle, Sony E-readers...in the near future

Singaporean can read newspapers around the world (SPH will had to compete in a world without border)

Singaporean for the 1st time, be expose to different ideas from all sides our ability to think for ourselves will be sharpen

Firstly, my best wishes to SDP for the new year and the coming “pearl” anniversary. Hopefully it will be a case of being a year older, and a year more mature and confident as an opposition party.

But as I read the article, the hope runs pretty much aground. Instead of portraying some glimmer of confidence, SDP prefers to cast itself as the perennial victim, yet again. It reminds us of its mindset that the ruling party will “continue to throw everything at (it) to stop (its) momentum and derail (it) moving forward.”

Beside appealing for sympathy from Singaporeans, one perceives that SDP is merely using the things “thrown” at it for its lack of progress over the years. Funny that the self-proclaimed civil-disobedience provocateur is now complaining of being provoked. Also, cynically, we can interpret the last sentence in the article as reinforcing the view that the same tiring strategy will be repeated in future - “2010 will not be much different from years past”.

Crying over the lack of media publicity no matter what it does and how active it is, seems an admission that its attention-seeking antics are ineffectual. We should remind SDP that the media does not owe it a living.

I certainly hope the “Evening of Dazzle with the Democrats” and the commemorative magazine will be more inspiring and dazzling then the message used here to herald in the new year.

BryanT: Respect the truth. If SDP is really a victim then report that it is a victim. Attention seeking is very important in politics, especially if you are reporting the truth. The problem with you is you are looking not for a responsible political party but a giant commercial marketing company. That you can look elsewhere. You do not owe SDP a living. I doubt SDP has gotten a single cent from you, am I right SDP?

Firstly, my best wishes to SDP for the New Year and the coming “pearl” anniversary. I'm absolutely certain that, as a party comprising forward looking individuals, it will be a case of being a year older, and a year more mature and confident as an opposition party.

As I read the article, I have remained as hopeful as I have been about the progress that the party will continue to make. Brimming with confidence, SDP prefers not to succumb to the victimhood that the PAP intends for it. It reminds us of its mindset when it says that the ruling party will 'continue to throw everything at (it) to stop (its) momentum and derail (it) moving forward'. But SDP will continue to endeavor as doggedly as always:

Re: "But whatever the PAP may throw at us we will meet it the SDP way – with firm resolve and determination. We will not complain, we will not shed tears and we will most certainly not kowtow to the PAP. We will keep our heads up and meet the challenges head on."

By not appealing for sympathy from Singaporeans, nobody but the most malicious will perceive that SDP is merely using the things “thrown” at it to explain what they would refer to as its 'lack of progress over the years'.

Also, with much relief, we can interpret the last sentence in the article as reinforcing the view that the same strategy that has obviously been working will be repeated in future - “2010 will not be much different from years past”.

Reminding Singaporeans of the lack of media publicity no matter what it does and how active it is, is a reminder of the complete lack of professionalism by the media. How else should one characterize non-coverage of newsworthy events that are also in the public interest? Perhaps it is tacit admission by the media that the party's civil dispobedience campaign DOES work! We should remind the media that they make a living from us, its readers, and want to read more see more balanced coverage in the media for the SDP.

I certainly hope the “Evening of Dazzle with the Democrats” and the commemorative magazine will be as inspiring and dazzling as the message used here to herald in the new year.

May SDP have a bountiful New Year.

Hello, PAP party convention (american style)

objective: generate excitiment, sharing experience, step up grassroots enthusiasm

goal: reaching out to the youths, self-renewable is the key, staying relevant to the new voters

    tools: embracing new media

new media: speech given by MP Zapy Mohammed

boring contents: same old, same old corruption free message, conversativism values

excellent contents: using new media, through facekbook, you tube, twitter

Beside SDP, the rest of the pack are lacking behind
  • Aung - Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to SDP and all SDP supporters!!!

I wish you all the best and success in year 2010.

Happy New Year SDP! And thanks for all that you have done to try and bring about change for the better in Singapore. The work is hard and the sacrifices great, but a growing number of us are grateful that we have such courageous and strong men and women to lead us in the fight for a better government here. Power to you!
  • Ted
Happy New Year!!! As an ex-singaporean, i am very very proud of you. No doubt i am confident that you will succeed in the struggle against those idiots who are in the "wrong side of history". Thank you!!!

If BryanT spent as much time parsing the governance of PAP as he does parsing the ineluctable tactics of SDP, it’s conceivable he could contribute substantively to the quality of life of his fellow Singaporeans. As it stands now, however, his steady diet of sideline pontifications masquerading as erudite analysis appears undeviatingly small-minded and fallacious, if not assiduously self-aggrandizing. Readers of the SDP website can only hope that BryanT will give it a rest in 2010.
  • Robox - PAP Interferes With Press
Not really on topic, but this is still on the AWARE steeplejacking that I also wrote of here. Not that any Singaporean who reads the newspapers with eyes wide open needs it, but if we want concrete evidence that the PAP government does in fact interfere in the running of the press, here's some:

    http://theonlinecitizen.com/2010/01/toc-holds-a-successful-year-in-review/

"...when the topic of religion and secularism was raised during Aware saga, the government began to express concern to the editors, and the editors had to use their professional judgment to decide what lines could not be crossed."
