Chee Soon Juan

The report in the Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao (29 Mar 10) quoted Ms Lina Loh (Mr Chiam See Tong's wife) as saying that I was the one who ousted Mr Chiam from the SDP. The report also quoted her as making other remarks about me that were untrue.

In my interview with Lianhe Zaobao published on 28 Feb 10, I had said that several CEC members had repeatedly tried to persuade Mr Chiam not to resign as secretary-general of the party because we still saw him as the leader.

I added that even in the eyes of party leaders like Mr Ling How Doong, Mr Chiam's position was never challenged but we just wished he could be more democratic.

This cannot be seen, by any stretch of the imagination, to be statements attacking Mr Chiam. I was relating what really took place, namely, that Mr Chiam's colleagues persuaded him to return because we still wanted to see him continue on as leader.

But in response to my statements Mrs Lina Chiam has launched a very personal attack against me, accusing me of ousting Mr Chiam.

I have exercised utmost restraint in highlighting some of the issues that led up to Mr Chiam's resignation as secretary-general and subsequent expulsion from the party.

For example, when the Today journalist Mr Loh Chee Kong emailed me in February 2009 asking for my response to Mr Chiam's comments that the SDP was engaging in "conspiratorial and destructive politics" and that he was "forced out" of the party, I replied to Mr Loh:

"I have no desire to let myself and my party be dragged by you into a mud-slinging match with another opposition party."

At the same time I wrote to Mr Chiam pointing out that his remarks "inaccurate and uncalled for."

I then added that "We bear no ill-will towards you (Mr Chiam) and we wish only the best for you, your family and the Singapore Peoples' Party. We seek cooperation, not confrontation, with our fellow opposition parties."

Today went ahead and published the report anyway. Even then, in my reply to the article I refrained from criticising Mr Chiam and continued to wish him well. I only wanted to set the record straight that I did not oust him.

At the Reform Party dinner in 2009, I approached Mr Chiam to wish him well.

I attended his 25th anniversary dinner as an MP because I bore him no grudge and I was hoping the same from him.

The Singapore Democrats had even organised two public forums in 2008 and 2009 where we invited all the opposition party leaders, including Mr Chiam, to see how we could cooperate. We also invited him to our 30th anniversary dinner.

I did all this in the hope of burying the hatchet with Mr Chiam.

Unfortunately today's outburst published in the Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao and My Paper where Mrs Lina Chiam made a host of personal attacks against me were untrue. It has poisoned the well again.

This must stop. I have been demonised by the PAP and its media for long enough. I have been accused of ousting Mr Chiam which is a blatant lie. Records will show this.

I have refrained from answering my critics on this matter because I was hoping that the past would remain where it belongs, and that we can look ahead and focus on our fight for a democratic Singapore.

Depending on the developments over the next day or so, it may be necessary to set the record straight over the episode of Mr Chiam's departure from the SDP.

I say "may be" because even at this late stage I am hoping that something can still be done to avert any open clash with Mrs Chiam. Suffice it to say that the ball is in her court.

I want to put a stop to the lies propagated by the PAP and the media that I had entered the SDP and ungratefully usurped Mr Chiam's position as leader. Nothing could be further from the truth.

There are many details that hitherto Singaporeans do not know because they have been obscured or covered by the SPH in the past.

Sometimes it takes more courage to walk away from a fight. But there comes a time when one has to turn around and face one's accusers and say "No more."

I only wish for opposition supporters to know and understand that the SDP must defend itself. While we have refrained from open criticism of others in the opposition, that gesture must be reciprocated.

There is no doubt that the PAP's media is fanning this matter for all its worth. But the SDP cannot always be the only one to see this. At some point we cannot avoid speaking up. That point is very near.

PAP keep harping on this through their media because this is a "sure win" tactic.

Obviously, Mr Chiam and his family still bear a grudge against SDP or else they would not say things that can be exploited by the media.

Whether you like it or not, the truth is that Mr Chiam behaved in a tyrannical way, which is why he was voted out by the CEC members. And no matter how one spins it, this puts him in the bad light. This is why it is a lose-lose for SDP. If you explain yourself, it makes Mr Chiam looks bad, and he or his family hits back, along with a host of his opposition supporters. If you do not explain, it makes SDP looks back.

The only way is really to patch up with the Chiam family, especially before Mr Chiam goes the way of JBJ, else it will forever be a scar.

Right not opposition parties are so disunited, even all the many deadly mistakes PAP make, they will never be voted out because voters do not see a viable alternative. Only a pan of loose sands.

SDP may want unity but it seems all other opposition parties do not want unity at all.

And without unity from opposition, PAP wins again. And every year, countless Singaporeans who are fed up with the PAP will migrate off this shitty island, leaving only the stooges of PAP behind to fawn over them and piss at opposition parties.

    Dear Dr Chee

I'm sorry if Mrs Chiam has unknowingly offended you in a way or another but please rest assured she did not intend to launch any personal attack to you. This is all a result of the sensationalized Straits Times reporting by 133th SPH to drive a wedge between our parties.

Please go through the original interview in Chinese by Zaobao Yew Lun Tian with Mrs Chiam and not be taken in by the skewed reporting from Straits Times.

This is a 17 year old issue which has nothing to do with the business of Singaporeans.

We are in politics to serve Singaporeans and we hope SDP and SPP gets remembered for Progressive Politics which bring Singapore and Singaporeans forward, and not into regressive one peppered with petty quarrellings that brings us away from Democracy.

Dr Chee I thank you for all the sacrifices for the Opposition cause, you have my salute.

    regards
    Alex Tan

Why are there still people lamenting Chiam See Tong's departure from the SDP? Is it such a great loss for the SDP? Or Singapore?

If Chiam See Tong had any real political talent, his party would be nowhere near the stump party that it is currently; his helming of the SPP would have resulted in an actual growth of his party. Instead the SDP has not only grown under Dr Chee, but the political left has emerged from obscurity after being pomelled into oblivion by the extreme right fascist PAP.

The current SDP is where it is making more waves in Singapore's political scene than any other party despite having no seats in Parliament. An this could not have happened under Chiam; new members and supporters gravitate towards the SDP only because it is ideologically different, a refreshing difference from the stale PAP tome.

It's very shameful indictment on Chiam See Tong, that after a quarter of century in Parlaiment making him the longest serving opposition member, that most people identify his party only with him.

What am I saying? Most people don't know the name of his party either.
  • Robox
I think it is time that we all grow up and understand one thing: this longstanding PAP-controlled media ploy isn't only about painting the SDP in a negative.

This is both emotional and political blackmail, and let me explain.

The PAP, well as the PAP-affliated 'opposition' parties are very well aware that there is an anxiety, both between the SDP (only - all others are fakes) and the majority of those who vote for the 'opposition' as well as the opposition.

They are banking on us maintaining a polite silence in the name of an opposition unity that they very well doesn't exist.

Screw that polite silence, I say. Tell the truth because in the end the truth will always overcome.
  • Robox
A 17-year old grudge only tells us something about the bearer of that grudge: emotional immaturity.

Such people don't deserve the astronomical amounts that they are paid.

SDP has EVERTHING it takes to soldier on alone.

    BELIEVE!

    Hi Mrs Chiam,

    I am posting it again,

Are you SENILE as to be played into the hands of the highly controlled and regulated media?

In my earlier post i have missed out the word "you" .
  • seebeng - His wife is the only hope
It's clear from the ongoing episode that the SDP has not only to fight against the fascist PAP, but also has to take on the so-called opposition, aided and abetted by the PAP propaganda mouthpieces that claim to be the "mainstream media".

Why go on dredging out an incident that happened 18 years ago? Although the entire leadership of SDP at that time lost confidence in Chiam and sacked him from the party, the PAP went to his rescue and saved him from losing his seat in parliament in 1993.

In the 1997 elections, Chiam was reelected to "parliament" representing his new party the SPP. He then formed SDA in which NSP was a component. But soon NSP left the alliance blaming Chiam for his lack of leadership. Even the present Chairman of SPP is openly criticizing Chiam's leadership. But this is not “news” to our co-called mainstream media.

All that the PAP and its impotent media are trying to do is to keep the incompetent Chiam as member in its rubberstamp parliament so that the fascist regime could use him from time to time to check the popularity of Chee Soon Juan and SDP.

Now, to revive this so-called feud between Chiam and Chee, Lina Loh (Chiam's wife) is brought on board. This is because the others in SPP want to move on, but Lina, hoping to contest in Potong Pasir in place of her ailing husband could be relied upon to keep invoking an issue that is almost twenty years old.

If Chee Soon Juan is such a schemer and untrustworthy as Lina makes him out to be with the help of PAP propaganda rags, SDP would not have attracted and grown in strength in the recent past. What is striking is despite not having its presence in Parliament, SDP is the only opposition party that is drawing more and more people, especially the young to its ranks.

No wonder the authoritarian PAP and its quislings can't stand this phenomenal growth of SDP under Chee Soon Juan and his party leaders.

The ability of a strong potential leader joining a party and then "ousting" its leader, even if true in the present case, speaks well for democracy.

Is it imaginable of this happening in the PAP with LKY still there?

Unlike Chiam, he would be , in his own words, such an "infighter" as to always, by all pragmatic means, emerge victorious at the "fray".

  • quantum
Do you think the reporter should be charged under the Sedition Act or ISA for inciting unrest and instigating hatred in an attempt to destroy and subvert the stability and harmony of Singapore?
  • tangeo - Why did she do it?
Why did Mrs Chiam say the things she did to the SPH? Come on, doesn't she know that the local newspapers will play one against the other?

She, by the utterance of several sentences has done the PAP a great service!

  • nobody
Hmm.. With this type of on going smearing campaign by the Main-Stream-Media, it is the harbinger of the ruling party's gearing up for the foreseeable next "G-erection"! All oppositions, please wake up and get ready for the action!

Halt all the segregation and remind congregated to face the challenge posed by the million-dollar despicable ingrates.

Stand together and put up a good challenge to the formidable giant to demonstrate to the general public that without the present ruling party, Singapore will not sink and can prosper even to greater height.
  • johntoh
For the past 17 years, the PAP govt have done more, so much more to badly affect the livehood of Singaporeans. A lot of its actions and policies from foreign workers "invading" our homeland to the disastrous losses by Temasek and GIC have gone unaccountable to the actual owners of the land - the born bred citizens of Singapore

Right now, the PAP wants to dig up something that happened 17 years ago? An event that, then and now, has no bearing whatsoever to the public in general.

In that case, let us dig up the past as well:

    1. the issue of LKY and his role as interpreter with the dreaded Japanese Kempetai during WW2, while many brave people ranging from intellectuals to coolies were fighting the Japs in the jungles, LKY never even stepped near the fringe of a jungle

    2. LKY cruel ouster and incarceration of his one time compatriot, and the then party leader which LKY himself was in, Mr Lim Chin Siong (LKY also arrested and sent jailed for years, many other patriotic Singaporeans fighting for independence from the British)

    3. PAP's treatment of former President Ong Teng Cheong request for details of Singapore's reserve and later President Ong's funeral(i.e. no state funeral)

    4. LKY, before stepping down as PM, used the ISD to arrest, interrogate, threaten and beat up social activists, opposition members in Ops Spectrum in 1987. 'Clearing' the path for Goh Chok Tong of any possible 'threats' to PAP before Goh's 'promotion' by LKY to become PM

    5. for the last 10 years, PAP flooded the country with foreign workers amid public outcry. LKY did it to 'spur' Singaporean to work 'better, cheaper, faster' LKY didn't care whether it causes hardship for breadwinners or the affected families. LKY just simply theorise that competition for jobs is good and has this weird notion that Singaporeans are getting 'lazy'

    6. Former PAP Chairman Toh Chin Chye falling out with LKY and disagreement with PAP's direction when retiring from politics

And lots more that were done causing ADDED hardship to the livehood of the locals - CPF, ECP, NSF....

SO WHY BRING UP SOMETHING THAT OCCURRED 17 YEARS AGO WHICH IS THE INTERNAL MATTER OF A POLITICAL PARTY AND THAT, THEN AND NOW, DOESN'T AFFECT SINGAPOREANS IN GENERAL IN ANYWAY.

Internal political squabbles happens all over the world. PAP have got its fair share too.

  • quantum
    johntoh
You forgot to mention Devan Nair and Francis Seow.
I think LKY is really happy watching this Mrs Chiam. But lets not let JBJ die in vain.
  • Dick - Screw PAP
    Is LKY an angle?

He is a traitor and work for the Japs and that is OK?

Compare to the internal SDP problem, which is more serious?

Singaporeans are not that stupid right?
  • fauxpas
The hidden issue may be that both SDA and SDP are gunning for Bishan-Toa Payoh.

SDA is hoping SDP will walk away when they announced Chiam will be contesting.

SDP should walk away. The reason is simple: If you walk away, you will be seen as the good guys. If you challenge them head on, you will be seen as the bad guys. There are many other wards which SDP can do much better. Be flexible, not dogged.

TP-Bishan is not an opposition stronghold. Whichever opposition party contesting there may not do well at all.

  • fish n chips
Can someone in the know tell me this?
Is Chiam related to the Lees by marriage?
  • johntoh
    Forgot to add.

If it's up to me. I'll just reiterate what I've stated in the past and ignore current comments by Mrs Chiam.

    So stay cool Dr Chee.

No need to forever carry this 17 year old non-issue as a political baggage.

Let it go. As you said yourself, it belongs in the past.

PAP is just pulling all stops for political mileage. They just want to bring this issue up in an attempt to portray you to the new young voters (those just turn 21 years and little older) negatively. Every bit counts for them now. Really desperate I might add.

As for Mr Chiam See Tong, older Singaporeans know his political style, his lifetime of non-confrontational politics as an opposition party leader and MP. Quietly doing all he can for his constituency. The issues that he have raise and not raise for Singapore and Singaporeans.
Bottomline: PAP saw fit to leave him be. He's the kind of opposition Govt around the world would love to have in their own country.

As for Mrs Chiam, with due respect, she is still by any measurement a political novice.

Just my 2 cents worth if you don't mind.

  • quantum
    TP-Bishan is a PAP stronghold.
  • BryanT - Another 17 years.
The entire letter is just a long boring drone to justify his past and present actions. So I will only focus on three specific points here:

    a. Firstly, CSJ said that the accusation of him ousting Mr Chiam is “a blatant lie”. He added that “records will show this”.

CSJ uses the future tense “WILL”. After 17 years, we have yet to see any evidence that he can produce to conclusively show that he DID NOT oust CST. Since he mentioned that there records, we would urge him to produce them so before it drags on for another 17 years.

    b. Secondly, he also said that he is “hoping that something can still be done to avert any open clash with Mrs Chiam.” But he added rather provocatively that “the ball is in her court.”

If one is genuinely interested to let the matter rest, one does not talk about the ball being in the opponent's court. It is blatantly and openly stating that the problem lie with the other side. We should doubt CSJ's sincerity in closing the case.

    c. Thirdly, CSJ mentioned that SDP has “refrained from open criticism of others in the opposition”. He calls for the gesture to be reciprocated.

It is an open secret that there are quite a few close supporters of the SDP who have deliberately NOT signed up as members of the party. They have been seen openly donning SDP t-shirts and helping to organise the party activities, including the recent anniversary celebrations. There is nothing technically wrong with this arrangement.

But some of these open non-member supporters often speak up on behalf of the party in internet fora, and engage in very harsh criticism of other Opposition parties members and their policies. Of course, this arrangement of non-membership gives SDP much leeway to attack other parties while denying that it is responsible. SDP intents must be called into question.

One of its non-member supporter requested me to read the open letter again. He was inclined to believe that the letter show that CSJ cared more for Opposition unity than his ego.

I would not comment about his ego here, but the tone of the letter and the clandestine actions of the supporters belie the party's interest in Opposition unity.
  • Seelan Palay - BryanT, an activist for Opposition Unity?
BryanT has been noticed by many for recently going around the Internet talking about "Opposition Unity".

When contrasted with his support of the PAP, I wonder what drives his interest in seeing a united opposition?

Or is it a convenient excuse and roundabout method to sowing seeds of suspicion, dislike and disunity amongst the opposition?

BryanT has claimed not being a member of the PAP. Is he one of the open non-member PAP supporters often speaking up on behalf of the party in internet fora, and engaging in very harsh criticism of other Opposition parties members and their policies?

Of course, this arrangement of non-membership, coupled with complete anonymity gives BryanT much leeway to attack other parties while denying that the PAP is responsible. BryanT's intents must be called into question.
  • tewniaseng
A good one Seelan,I wonder why Bryan Roti hated SDP so much ? He must have benefited from something or may have other hidden agenda.Did SDP pilfer, steal or rob the country's assets ? Obviuosly SDP is reckon as the best opposition party, otherwise pap and the media would not go all out to destroy the party.
  • orange
Is Bryan-T an online armchair activist for opposition disunity? Or is he trying to paint the SDP in a negative light with an obvious attack campaign on Dr chee?

It seems that Bryan T seems intent to all out destroy Dr Chee's name by taking cheap and meaningless potshots in all the posts on this site, specifically targetting Dr Chee instead of the issue.

even Alex Tan from the SPP seems apologetic saying Mrs Chiam didn't intended to make the malicious claims against Dr Chee, what is it then that Bryan T is harping on?

Is Bryan T a PAP activist? Recently PM Lee made a remark that Young PAP members are instructed to act as internet activists for the ruling party to infiltrate and engage in battles online.

If this is the kind of non-intellectual standard of "online battles" that Young PAP members can come out with, I shudder to think about the future of Singaporeans with these standards of future PAP leaders.

  • mecc
    Dear Dr Chee,
Please do not let this smearing campaign affect you. My vote will definitely go to SDP if they contest in Bukit Panjang. But do not let the government-controlled media have ANY chance to slam you more. It is very very impressionable to many people out there. I do not wish to see the media jump at any chance to slam the opposition...
  • Jufrie
I, for one, am all for opposition unity and progress. I admit that I have been quite critical of some people in the opposition. But my intention was to see the emergence of an effective opposition.

With due respect to Mr and Mrs Chiam I beg of you not to play into the dirty hand of the PAP and its main stream media. It serves us no purpose.

I know enough of the goings on 17 years ago to say that Dr Chee's version - that he was not responsible for Mr. Chiam's departure from the SDP - is the truth. I have cross checked and reconfirmed with many of the SDP CEC members then.

For the sake of opposition unity and genuine progress let's bury the past. Lets all focus on preparing for the coming elections. Singaporeans have expressed in no uncertain terms that our country badly needs an effective opposition. We must not let them down.
  • AhKow - Classic BryanT
    Another classic BryanT as usual.

BryanT says: "The entire letter is just a long boring drone to justify his past and present actions."

Here he says, Chee is wasting time "justifying" his [chee's] action. Basically, BryanT is saying that he is bored with Chee saying the samething over and over again.

BryanT: "After 17 years, we have yet to see any evidence that he can produce to conclusively show that he DID NOT oust CST. Since he mentioned that there records, we would urge him to produce them so before it drags on for another 17 years."

Now he says he wants Chee to justify himself despite complaining that he is not impressed with Chee "long boring drone".

You see this guy can't make up his mind but then what is new.

After all he exists, in his own word, "to agitate (read violent)" against the SDP.
  • foxtrot
I was disappointed when I heard the news that Chiam would be contesting Bishan Toa Payoh, where I stay, because I got my hopes up when I heard SDP was making rounds here. There is no way Chiam could not have known that SDP is already campaigning there, and any logical person knows that contesting in a 3 way fight is instant suicide for any opposition party.

My opinion of him dropped drastically after that. It feels dishonest to let another party work the grounds, then announce he will be running and effectively force the former one out. I never understood why people seem to revere him, he hasn't said anything meaningful in parliament as far as I recall. Till date I have not heard any news of SPP in my area.

Of course, I would still vote for him, because after all the alternative is PAP. But I really wanted to vote for SDP.
  • Robox
There are many explanations for this latest outburst by Chiam using his wife as his proxy, a woman who was NOT present at the proceedings at the CEC vote that saw him VOTED OUT. (I wonder how a legal and legitimate voting exercise provided for in the SDP's Constitution could be distorted so badly as an ouster.)

    1. He's a PAP mole, a suggestion made by other netizens.

    2. He's doesn't have the emotional maturity to resolve an incident that took place almost two decades ago. (This is my explanation. Also, how different does that make him from the PAP whose combined emotional maturity is that of exactly ONE 14-year old schoolboy, an emotional immaturity that has had far reaching and long lasting political consequences in Singapore. Should we want him in his continued role as 'leader' of the opposition in Parliament?)

    3. Internalized oppression. (My explanation. The oppressed can be trusted to repeat the same actions towards others in the target group.)

    4. Petty jealousy. There is no denying that the SDP's political clout is growing and all signs point to even more of that growth. If Chiam thinks that it could have been he who could have been the person who might have helmed this phenomenon, he couldn't be more wrong. I repeat: the SDP would have remained a stump party excatly like the SPP is now under Chiam's charge. And it has entirely to do with WHO he is and what he stands for, and especially what he doesn't stand for. (BTW, I am seeing this same petty jealousy from other opposition parties as well.)

The CEC decision in SDP's ancient history was the right one.

    For Singapore.

BryanT is currently holding attached to SDP's permanent Agent de Provocature.

He even has a dummy FB account. Just lookup "Bryan Ti" on facebook and decide for yourself. But beware guys, he is out there ready to pounce on you. So if you are not comfortable with sharing your personal life, please do not let him in to your personal life.
  • AnnA - Let's Bygone be Bygone. Don't Be Childish!
Let us stop all this childish nonsense and continue about our concern for Singaporean.

Dear Dr Chee, do make this your 'last' letter of explanation. In future, just refer them to this article or your FAQ in this site. Don't belittle yourself with this latest old news. Brush them aside, it's not worthy. Please focus on what SDP has been doing for the past few months now. Treat what SPH is doing as being childish. Concentrate on the future for the benefit of all Singaporean.

Here, I do respect Alex Tan's apologetic comment. It shows that Mrs Chiam did not expect that she will be 'victimised' by the propaganda msm and PAP intended to highlight, and I believe she has no intention to be backfired as a person who do not wish to see the unity of all opposition. (Please let it be that way so that the respect to SPP is still maintained) I'd say that it is only a simply 'grudge' of a wife by mere simple words exaggerated by MSM!! After all, she was answering question in an interview, right??

Don't fall into PAP trap again.

Stop your manipulating comment and implication, BryanT. It's nonsense in my point of view.

    SDP, please continue your causes.

To all PAP's opposition parties : The KEY is UNITY, for NOW.

@ Seelan on Tue 30 March

I remembered reading reports sometime back that sources within PAP "acknowledge" that there are certain "selected" members whose main responsibility is to post threads or comments to "balance" the overwhelmingly negative view of PAP in the online domain (since this is the only source they can't effectively control).

I'm not surprised should BryanT be one of such members. Too often, his posting contains too many argument fallacies that are often used by the PAP in sowing the seeds of doubt on the motives of oppositions.
