Even at this late stage the PAP still refuses to announce the election boundaries. The Elections Department has already started to make preparations for the general elections. It has asked schools for an update on its premises for use as polling centres, reserved the use of void decks for balloting purposes, and, just this week, despatched elections officials to check out potential venues for nomination centres.

And yet with all the changes to the boundaries, the PAP is still hiding the information so that the opposition cannot make concrete preparations and communicate with voters.

This must be the only ruling party that touts its popularity at every opportunity but goes to absurd lengths to make sure that the process is as unfair as possible for the opposition.

Not content with keeping the media under its thumb, allowing only nine days for campaigning (and even then takes one more day off for "cooling off"), banning candidates from speaking to voters in public areas, gerrymandering to ensure maximum advantage, amending the constitution to suit its own interests, the PAP is holding back the release of newly drawn boundaries.

In the 1997 elections, the boundaries were announced one (yes, 1) day before the parliament was dissolved and the prime minister called for elections. Nominations took place five days thereafter and voting nine days. Blinked and you missed the GE.

This time around the PAP has even more reason to make sure that the entire electoral process is as biased as possible.

The floods, the continuing influx of foreigners, the shortage of HDB flats, and so on have all made the ruling party rather anxious. A straightforward democratic fight with the opposition would see many casualties on its side.

Hence, the foot-dragging on the boundaries.

But can a political party as afraid of a fair fight as the PAP claim to have the legitimate mandate of the people?

Singaporeans must be alert to the fact that the control of the electoral system will ensure that the PAP's interests is served, not the country's.

The Singapore Democrats call on the PAP to face the opposition in a fair electoral fight. It can start by immediately releasing the new boundaries.

Somehow I didn't think the PAP cannot "hide" anymore.

To give an example, the YOG was meant to galvanise everyone in S'pore, be they new citizens, PR or native S'poreans, to be one united people. Given its disastrous policy for a stifling influx of immigrants and foreign workers, the PAP had hope it'll unite people from all walks of life. Yeah, fat hope indeed.

The YOG instead split the people of S'pore right down to its core. A nation that have never been so divided since independence.

The PAP is now in damage control mode. One can expect more pro native S'porean policies to be announced by the not-to-be-trusted PAP PM right up to election day to "buy" votes over to them.

The next 6 months is crucial as PAP on the one hand tries to applease native S'poreans with short term policies while on the other hand furiously converting more new citizens who are thankful to the PAP for letting them have a job here(at the expense of native S'poreans) and settling down. That is why in the past 12 months or so S'pore have a bigger jump as never before in the number of immigrants to S'pore. The PAP is going at full speed to convert more foreigners.

Fellow S'poreans for godsake...or rather for your sake please don't be fooled by their "promises".

We have suffered so much in all these years or even the past decade. Don't let yourself be taken in by empty insincere sweet talk about how they (PAP) will prioritise their attention toward native S'poreans in the next 6 - 9 months.

Remember the PAP has already shown that they are adverse to native S'poreans leading a happy and contended life. WE, the citizens of S'pore, must have spurs struck into our hide for the despot/s to be satisfied.

Such complaints wouldn't impress them. They aren't democrats at heart, but pragmatists, ie. they define the right and good in terms of what "works". (Hence "democracy that works.)

Like all autocrats, they think only they know what works, and any "alternative" would lead to chaos. They believe, therefore, in their own dictatorship.

But, again only for pragmatic considerations, they must put up a show of "democracy". For we must relate and trade with the free world. Hence, they continue to make us say the pledge and hold "elections", even though their situationist pragmatism has caused them to abandon it, however sincere Rajaratnam had been when he composed it.

Another opposition party added to the batlleground, do we really need so many parties?

The boundaries are of concern, yes, but a bigger concern are the number of opposition parties.

If the opposition parties fails to stand united this election, we might as well vote for the PAP!
  • floatingzen - Play your own game
    SDP:
You know exactly what strategies MIW will regurgitate again for this election. Their machinery are ready and waiting for the word 'go'.

Play your own game. Harness your forces. Call for volunteers. Dissect responsibilities to your party members: publicity, on-site preparations, on-line media, election watch-dogs...

No need to say what's bad with MIW anymore. We all know that.

Instead, appeal to the nationalistic fervour in S'poreans. The organisational ability. The desire for change. The annoyance with MIW.

Do not appeal for election candidates. Not many S'poreans has stomach for politics.

Instead, call for volunteers. Call for people who desire change. Call for bloggers. Call the Ah Bengs, the NS-men, the intelligentsia, the unemployed, the displaced, the Kopi-tiam Ah peks, we are all one Singaporean.

Make sure you have Hokkien speaking party volunteers. Malay speaking. Tamil speaking.

They will spread the word. We want change.
  • 123 - CHANGE? to floatingzen
politics is the baseline for a country well-being. you however say change, for many call for change of good or bad in results. but i ask you, are your 'manifesto' a help to the country or a political selfishness for a 'liberty'?
  • floatingzen - To 123
What manifesto? Manifesto are for politicians. Especially highly paid ones.

Isn't politics all about the common citizen on the street?

Or has politics been 'hijacked' for highly paid politicians. Or the MNC? Or the GLCs. Or the FT?

The liberty we badly need is to bring politics back to the common people and represent their desire.

Aim for the best BUT leave no man behind.
  • 123 - Liberty?
you ask for liberty but for there is no liberty but only liberty for the party that rules. for there can only be selective liberty for if liberty was full and unrestricted, anarchy would surely be acroused. this anarchy would then been caused as to the freedom given of idealogies
  • floatingzen - Speak English
Your statement is too 'cheem' and your English too bombastic for anyone's understanding.

Until and when you speak the language that the common S'porean understand; this is the end of the conversation.
  • Jufrie - Have you met the man?
    Dear 123, whoever you are,

Have you met Dr Chee in person? How did you form your strong but skewed opinion against the man? What has he done to you to make you despise him such.

Chances are you, like many Singaporeans, have been brainwashed by the msm to serve the PAP agenda. Or you represent the PAP itself.

Be objective and talk sense. You will gain more credibility by doing so. More and Singaporeans have begun to see the truth about Dr Chee and the SDP. This is especially so with those who have met him personally during our numerous outreach actiivities.

This is what is alarming the PAP.
  • intanbiru - Been led by the nose for far too long
Whatever. Singaporeans have been led by the nose by the ruling party for far too long. We have to regain our self-respect. We want real representation - of the people, by the people, for the people. These are typical PAP tactics - to preempt any attempt from the Opposition to gain a foothold in Parliament. Even if the ruling party is trying with feverish frenzy to convert foreigners to new citizens, I just hope that the grateful new citizens eligible to vote will be negligible. Then, the votes will tip in favour of the Opposition.

PS: if the Opposition truly wants to represent ordinary, commonfolk Singaporeans - contest in every constituencies/GRCs. Make sure there are no walkovers.
  • Tan Tai Wei
Such ways of "fixing the opposition" is contemptuous both to us "citizens", and to themselves as self acclaimed "leaders".

To us, because they are manipulating us, treating us as "digits", orchestrating our will, so that we have no choice but just do the done thing, ie. cross the lighting and circle at the polls.

To themselves, because no self-respecting entities would care to thrive only on account of self-manipulated votes.
  • 123 - liberty
i am not siding neither faction of the government but just stating a general fact of where liberty is only determined by each individual ruling party differently and that free ability for speech would only achieve anarchy. Also, my point was on liberty not generally him which had passed long ago.
