Singapore Democrats

This Saturday's rally at the Speakers' Corner will be no ordinary rally. It will be history in the making. With the events we have in store and the speakers lined up, it will be an occasion where we re-discover what it means to be Singaporean.

We start at 5 pm with the Young Democrats (YD) taking the stage to engage younger Singaporeans. Come and talk to our YD leaders and hear their aspirations of taking our youths to a place we've never seen before - a place where intelligent political debate and action replaces ignorance and apathy.

The main event will begin at 6:30 pm during which speakers will address pressing issues that confront our society, issues that we will be focusing on when the elections come around.

Come and hear what Mr Tan Kin Lian has to say about the minimum wage and unemployment insurance. These are matters that directly affect working Singaporeans. Our struggles with the high cost of living in Singapore will be significantly helped if we introduce such measures.

Also listen to what Mr Vincent Cheng has to say about his work with the poor and how the Government so unjustly detained him because of it. Mr Cheng will talk about his treatment under detention, something which the authorities tried to prevent at the National Library a few months back.

His is a powerful story that no Singaporean should miss. Mr Cheng is a man with a heart of gold. His only crime was to care for the poor he saw around him. What the Government did to him and the other detainees must be fully aired. Saturday's rally is a good start.

We don't want to talk at you, we want a conversation with you. We want to bring you into the midst of our campaign. Why? Because the elections is not about us. It's about you and what you want for your future and the future of this country. It's about whether we continue to live under fear and exploitation, or we break out into a future of confidence and hope.

Let's show to the rest of Singapore that politics is for the people, not just politicians.

It is for all of us no matter what station in life we find ourselves or position we hold at work. From the high level executive to the office cleaner, from Ah Ma who has seen and experienced life to the teenager who's just getting started out, democracy knows no discrimination. It treats each and every one of us equally. That's the beauty of democracy and that's what we must aim for.

But Saturday will not be all politics. There will also be lots of fun for everyone. There'll even be a sing-along where we introduce the SDP's theme song. You won't want to miss this!

We're also setting up a little Yummy Corner where we provide refreshments. So come on down, bring your picnic mats and chairs and join us for a meaningful evening.

Let us come together to celebrate and embrace change, change that will make our future brighter and more secure. Change that will give us back our long-lost pride as Singaporeans.

Come and chat with our members, post messages on our display board, sign up as volunteers, and buy our publications. In other words, get involved! There's so much that you can do to help out in the coming elections. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option.

Tell all your family and friends about Saturday, 25 Sep 10, at Hong Lim Park (please wear something in red). It's the first of its kind. It's history in the making.

Dear SDP, pity I can't be at Hong Lim Park this Saturday to celebrate with you this history-in-the making event. But I will be there in spirit. All the best for a great rally!

If this is really a “history in the making” rally, please extend to include matters not only to
“working Singaporeans” but equally to the unemployed and the unrecognised Singaporeans too.

Also, congratulations to the party on a very successful rally. (Any video coming?)

Awesome Words

The Government of the absolute majority, instead of the Government of all the people, is but the Government of the strongest interests; and when not efficiently checked, it is the most tyrannical and oppressive that can be devised.
