Singapore Democrats

Democrats kicked off the GE2011 campaign with a rousing rally at an open field in the Commonwealth estate. All of the 11 candidates took to the stage to press home the SDP's case against the uncaring and out-of-touch policies of the PAP.

Candidate for Yuhua, Ms Teo Soh Lung led with the first speech of the evening. She touched on issues relating to government transparency, and questioned the quality of the PAP leadership.

Mr John Tan, who leads the Sembawang team, raised the immigration policy and its impact on employment and wages. He strongly advocated for the SDP’s Singaporeans First policy which requires employers to create an environment where Singaporeans are employed before a case can be made for employing a foreigner.

Mr Sadasivam Veriyah spoke eloquently in Tamil, English and Malay, addressing the concerns of the people in relation to being ignored by the government and finding it impossible to enable their voices to be heard.

Mr Mohd Isa addressed the crowd in Malay, with some remarks in English at the end of his speech. He addressed housing issues and told the people that this election is about them, rather than about the PAP.

Bukit Panjang candidate, Mr Alec Tok, showing a good grasp of constituency issues, addressed serious local problems in Bukit Panjang including gangsterism. He also questioned why Singaporean children are being given second priority in education.

Mr Jarrod Luo, our youngest candidate, speaking effortlessly in English and Mandarin, gave a rousing speech where he highlighted the PAP’s shortcomings and advised the crowd to vote PAP if it wanted more of the same.

Dr James Gomez, challenged the health policies of the current Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan who is his contender in Sembawang GRC. He highlighted how the minister’s shameful statements about parents being placed in nursing homes in Johor are not new but were also made previously.

Ms Michelle Lee, a mother of three and a teacher of underprivileged children asked the audience to reclaim Singapore for themselves and not allow the PAP’s rhetoric to sidetrack them from their desire for change and progress. Michelle completed her speech with some remarks in Chinese which were well-received.

Mr Tan Jee Say took the crowd through a reasoned defence of his economic proposals, contained in a highly-regarded paper that the government has been at pains to criticise. He showed how the government’s criticisms of his proposals are totally at variance with sound economic thinking and reveals the government’s short-sightedness in refusing to consider alternative ideas. Mr Tan also made some remarks in Mandarin.

Dr Vincent Wijeysingha addressed the deep-seated concerns of the people about the quality of the government's social policy and encouraged the audience to recognise that, whereas the government is warning people of the ill effects of opposition wins, in fact those fears have already been realised with its mismanagement of the economy and society these last five years.

Dr Ang Yong Guan was the last, and extremely, popular speaker. Moving back and forth between English and Mandarin with a lot of dialect thrown in, he fired the crowd’s imagination with his observations of the quality of life, from his political (and professional) standpoints.

The highlight of the evening was the signing of The SDP Promise which all the candidates did. The SDP Promise is a 10-point pledge to residents if our candidates are voted into office which include contributing 50 percent of their MPs' allowance to the party to upgrade our services to our constituents.

Danny the Democracy Bear was of course on hand to lend some assistance. He was on stage to encourage his colleagues as they gave their all in lively evening.

Apologies for sound system

Many of those who attended the rally said that those standing at the back of the crowd could not hear the speakers very well. We apologise for the problem. The situation will be rectified and the sound system will be improved for tomorrow's rally at the Jurong Stadium starting at 7 pm.

  • Stanley - Great rally, strengths & weakness
pls tell the speakers to remind voters that voting is secret. my dad still thinks its not, but is now convinced he can vote opposition. btw, i did alot of browsing, mass media, blogs, youtube etc. overall response to SDP rally is great. emotions are high. trust me, even a 11 year die hard supporter of SDP is shocked. 2001, 2006 never before SDP had such a big turn out. the critics are saying, SDP is just trashing PAP with no policies. many fence sitters, swing voters were at the back of rally. even PAP supporters who curious to know if they shld vote SDP this time. SDP must not be mistaken as anti-govt but pro-democracy, with viable alternatives. SDP must let voters know they r NOT trash talking PAP but showing voters that they r holding PAP accountable for their failed policies.

and, people are asking where is the facebook of Dr Ang, Mr Tan Jee Say and Ms Michelle Lee. The ""young & savvy"" will not be swayed by a well designed website. THey will return home, on their laptop and immediately google "Michelle Lee" on FaceBook and add congratory messages. This MIA of SDP candidates on FB is very under estimated. LOok at NIcole Seah''s FB fan page. People are adding SDP videos they just took and sharing on NSP site. NOt good. Dont worry about time wasting or high maintence of a FB, just make it a fanpage so people can connect with the candidates yet not intrude in to their private lives.

i mean how can u intro yr candidates on your site but without links to FB??? notice even corporations dont name verall, the speaking styles of SDP candidates is good. keep it up. the hosts Jaslyn also job well done. one great touch is the booth. very good!their URL anymore. its no longer... www.cna.com... its pls find more juicy news on our website or add us on FaceBook.com/CNA.

sorry, dont mean to be harsh, naggy or wet blanket. always been a very critical supporter of SDP. this is how SDP has improved so much over the pass 5 years.

this is SDP strongest and most credible team ever (and very likeable too) in decades. I really want to see you guys in parliament, and apply the SDP promise, shadow budget and manifesto!

see u at Jurong East Stadium!

p.s. ADD chinese character names behind all candidates intro pages & on yr FB too. many elderly, only remember candidates by CHinese names. My 2 parents are examples. Dunno who is ALec Tok but instant recognise ""Zuo Jin Yan"". I keep saying Michelle Lee is like PRincess Diana. They ask me ""whats her chinese name?""

HOW CARING IS THE PAP GOVERNMENT
when they appointed a Finance Minister named Tharman Shanmugaratnam who is allocating $800 on 1 May 2011 to our fellow citizens living on public assisted allowance to cover the GST increased from 5% to 7% since 2007?

How much did our citizens ON PUBLIC ASSISTED ALLOWANCE spend the last 5 years on GST from 2007-11?

    $330 x 0.7 = $23.10 per month x 5 years of 60 months = S$1386.

The $800 allocated by Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratn is not enough to cover the GST paid. Hence these poor citizens are still taxed!

Since the poor the PAP Minister will STILL tax, what unspeakable taxes or increases in pricing of all basic neccessities would the PAP MINISTERS NOT TAX given their high salaries and big bonuses?
  • abu55 - gst

hongkong do not have GST-and t economy is going well.
citizens recently get more govt pay out than spore.

    why spore needed gst-

1.reduced top income tax to 17%-same
    as hongkong??

2.removed estate duty-designed for t multi million dollars
    ministers??

gst implemented-robbing t POOR to pay t rich??
  • abu55 - spore economy

even a brain dead can see the pap govt is UNABLE to attract investments tat can create value added jobs.

the pap govt CANNOT perpetually use imported cheap labor aka FTs to prop up the economy.

industries cannot always depend on govt subsidies.tax incentives and cheap labour-tey should relocate else where.
tey r not suitable for singapore.

instead of depressing wages.t govt can/should reduce land cost.?
  • Robox
Please give Michelle Lee more publcity. There is already an online buzz afoot about how good of a speaker she is.
  • Prime Citizen
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Wednesday voters should focus on economic growth and jobs issues in this general election.

I say allcitizens /voters should also focus on thewidening income gap between the ruling party ministers and the median income of Singaporeans.

Where is the political correctness when many (at least 20%) citizens are living with financial hardship while the top 20 % of Singaporeans are lavishng away the wealth of this nation? Re-rig the moral compass in the Parliament is long overdue. Sent in all the opposition candidates for this Mission Is Possible for this election.

I sent the following 2 comments this morning at around 4am and received acknowledgements for both (I have printscreens) but apparently they were not sent??

  • jsraj - SDP we welcome to Holland Bt-Timah & Bt Panjang
Thank for your rallying call at Coomonwealth last night. It was simply awesome and very enriching. wesome.

In relation to the service and conservancy fees, the Holland-Bt Panjang GRC lost about S$ 8 million Dollars in toxic funds. Why has no one been charged or found accountable with squandering the funds of the residents?nWhy have we not got an apology?

If you go to the Subordinates courts, on Thursday evenings at about 6pm, you will see a steady stream of people heading INTO the sub courts, to form a very very long queue. The bulk of this individuals, are people who have failed to pay their Conservancy fees. They have to pay a fine, a legal fee plus the actual amount they owe when they attend the court. If they fail to turn up, a warrant of arrest is issued.

If individuals are held accountable for not paying service and conservancy charges, those who squander the same money should also face consequences.

No MP/Minister lost his salary, was reprimanded or held accountable and continued earning millions of dollars. I want to share a very sad incident while on my way home after the election rally.

I was on my way home at Fajar Road, Bukit panjang.
As I reached my block, I saw a police man and police woman shining a torch at a tree.

Curious I stood there to see what was happening as it was abt 11.00pm. A short while later, a bag of mangoes fell from a tree followed by an elderly gentleman who was well above 60.

The police questioned him and started taking his particulars. The whole event would have taken about 15 minutes.

The issue is, why is it wrong for residents to pluck mangoes in their estate when they pay the service and conservancy fees?

We cannot pluck mangoes but how can the Town Council pluck our S$8miillion and squander it?

What frustrated me much is that the place I have stayed has been rowdy for years, with youth gangs who hang around at the void decks and make a lot of noise till about 3 or 4 am in the mornings.

Many of my neighbours have called the police on numerous times ach, and all had the same thing to say; "The police seldom come down leh".

When an Indian man was attacked by parang wielding gangsters, the news was reported the very next day. The article carried interview with several residents that they have called the police and reported the situation to the police on several occasions.

What shocked me was that, a day later, the MP Dr Teo Ho Pin, was quoted in the press as saying that, Bt Panjang has never had any gang problems, that he had been working with the police closely and that was the first such incident in Bukit Panjang.

A resident then called the press to complain that the MP was wrong and then, a reporter was sent to interview residents again and almost all resident interview at random confirmed that they have called the police on several occasions, but the problem is usually solved, but only temporarily, and I can confirm till today the problem remains.

What saddens me is that the police, who are slow to catch gangsters, sprang into action to catch an elderly gentleman plucking mangoes at 11pm.
I welcome Mr Alex Tok to the Bt Panjang SMC and all the Members of the Holland-Bt Timah GRC. I wish you ever success. Thank you for supporting the residents of Bukit Panjang, Bt Timah and Holland.

    May God Bless you.

  • John Lee - SDP First Rally at Commonwealth Ave - Feedback
Am a SDP supporter & volunteer. Was at Commonwealth rally last night. Great Rally! Keep it up but here are some feedback for tonight rally at Jurong East:

    1. Garland all the candidates.
    2. When introducing candidates mention specifically and clearly name of the constituency they are standing.
    3. When speaking take note of distance to microphone as too near it becomes jarring and too far it's unintelligible to audience.
    4. Majority of audience are middle class as Singapore is 80% middle class. Sure, continue to bring up stories of really poor families, their plight and financial problems but you must move your audience's heart in a rally. The middle class is aware that real wage has lagged badly behind inflation. The middle class is facing job competition from foreign talent not foreign workers.
    5. Speak more against foreign talent not just work permit foreign worker. The middle supervisors & managers were in your audience last night.
    6. Singapore First policy in everyday life - jobs, schools, mrt overcrowding, shopping malls overcrowding, etc Look at how Saudi Arabia and UAE treat their own citizens. Big distinction between citizens and non citizens. Preferential treatment to Singaporeans, why not?
    7. True Democracy versus one party state - get Vincent to articulate why this election is a defining moment in the history of Singapore. Why true democracy is the birthright of every Singaporean. The right to have real choices to choose our political leaders every 5 years.
  • John Lee - Message for TEO SOH LUNG
"A TRULY CARING & COMPASSIONATE GOVERNMENT IN A TRUE DEMOCRACY"

Make this your rally call and get this message out as the electorate knows the PAP govt is not caring or compassionate enough!

Your caring & compassionate nature makes you the best person to spread this message to all Singaporeans!!
  • Zeal
Dr Ang Yong Guan brought up a great point yesterday during the rally which I feel the SDP can promote in their upcoming rallies specifically for the Holland-Bukit Timah Team.

He mentioned that Mr Tan Jee Say is the "hardware" of the team, while calling himself the "software". I believe the SDP can build on this "team roles" aspect that Dr Ang mentioned to put forth the notion that SDP's H-BT team has the right balance of expertise to cover all the important issues that the future government should take note.

Mr Tan Jee Say provides concrete alternative economic policies that should be introduced by the government to ensure Singapore's success in the future. Having been the PS to GCK in the past, he has the experience of seeing the process and effects of such policy-making.

Dr Ang's background in psychiatry and psychology puts him in good stead to consider the sociological impact of policies on the average Singaporean, hence his "software" reference.

But why stop there, Ms Michelle Lee, who made a great speech btw :), has the potent combination of both a background in finance coupled with championing the need for better education. Anyone who gave up the big money of the finance industry for the under-appreciated job of educating our youths gains great moral authority in anyone's book.

Last but not least the "star" of the team, judging from the response of the crowd when he appeared, Dr Vincent Wijeysingha champions the cause for better social policies that will make sure that "no one gets left behind", a promise made by the incumbents which they clearly have not kept.

In this H-BT team alone, we have champions for economic policies, social policies, societal concerns, education and finance. That in itself gives this SDP team more credibility than some of the other opposition teams.

I believe the H-BT area has a large number of middle to upper income families who may adopt a more pragmatic view of this election. Show them that this SDP team has a better mix and better credentials to represent them in parliament over the PAP team.

MrALec Tok- Zuo Jin Yan returned to Singapore in May 2010. He strongly believes that every Singaporean has a duty to look out for the most vulnerable and that government must be held accountable for their wellbeing. Putting this belief into practice, he has decided to participate in these General Elections to speak on behalf of his fellow Singaporeans.

    I salute you.

Run with your mind, Dr Dr Ang Yong Guan is a medical doctor.

I salute you, barefoot doctor of democracy amid our oppressed population.

Dr. James Gomez: “I joined the SDP because of its clear policy ideas and its determination to speak up fearlessly against injustices.”
“I have seen how people live secure and happy lives in democratic countries. I want to achieve the same for my fellow Singaporeans,” James says.

I agree what you said and I salute you too.
  • dannyk - SDP'S ANOTHER SOMERSAULT
Last night's rally was so lagging in SDP's usual fire brand politics. What happened Dr Chee?

No "fire" in any of the speeches to stir the raw emotions. Dr Ang looked like a clown popping up & down...trying hard to fit into the new SDP shoes.. but too bad it shows-up horribly that he doesn't fit in his new oppo role. What happened Dr Chee?

Vincent/James/Michelle .. hmmm...they are just articulate..thats all... nothing there to stir-up our already drained emotions.
    What happened Dr Chee?

This is an election rally...not a fun raiser.. so please do away with all the clowning and mascot thingy..especially my namesake...Danny the Bear.. Its irritating to see a mascot up on the stage when Singaporeans future are at stake here. Its like you are mocking at us. Are you serious? What happened Dr Chee?

Singaporeans are not stupid...we know what we want so don't keep repeating yourself. We want more meat & substance in your speeches. What happened Dr Chee?

I guess, this is another somersault from their usual style. What happened Dr Chee?

Hmm...sad..I see another set of PAPPY stooges in the making...so soft and clowinsh. What happened Dr Chee?

You have lost your moral compass...that's what has happened!
  • subianchen - Don't spoil your vote
    Don't spoil your precious vote.
Mark an "X" in the box against your choice candidate.
Make sure it's within the box, otherwise it will be considered as spoilt vote.
Do not mark anything other than an "X".
A "Tick" or a "Pass" is also considered as a spoilt vote.
Pass this message on to all your friends, colleagues, neighbours, relatives, families etc
  • miktanhc
Hi SDP I was at the rally last night. If you read my message, Perhaps when you guys speaks about influx of foreign worker, emphasize that singaporean is not against foreign worker, we should bring in foreign worker only when employer couldnt find one in singapore. My company recently employed three filipino for clerical job, that is three jobs lost for singaporean.I dont understand why MOM approve their employment pass when singaprean can do the job. Employer will just employ cheap foreign worker if they could.
  • compassion republican - Live streaming
How could we get SPD rally speech for the online community, or those busy at work, those having old folks to look after or simply baby sit at home, or transportation problems.
    (What about the ripple effect???)
How can we get you tube videos on the rally speech "the next day"
If such short 10 minutes videos are easily available we could "pass it on" to others through video sharing
    What about LIVE STREAMING???

SPP Mr Pwee is the only guy that touch on the flaws of GRC system that had been re-play over & over again by PM.
( Arguement for GRC presentation )
Prime Minister:"The design the GRC system was to allow minority candidates to enter parliment"
Therefore, we can conclude with the GRC system in place, minority candidates does not stand a chance to enter politics

    ( Counter-agurement for GRC presentation )
Their Logic and Thoughts how it was design in a way it should function for that desired outcome
The purpose of GRC system allow untested, unproven candidates to enter parliament.

    How they do it...
Coat-Tailing = borrow the strength of the Team Leader
    Candadities = can become FreeLoaders
The analogy is, if learners complain the driving test examination is too diffcult, too many L-plated leaners had failed, instead of giving Advanced-Level, we should option for Ordinary-Level, so that "no learners is left behind" now everyone is happy.
Question:"Does this make our roads more safe???"

At the end of the day
A more "dumb down" soceity as a whole. Because the process Meritocracy is not at play. As long as if you are a Minority Candadites you are auto-pilot mode to enter parliment.

The correct thinking, the proper approach, the right solution, this should be the mindset
If they are really interested in having more Minority Candidates, the proper way, the correct way, is allow more Indians students and Malays students do well in their studies. By hiring "special teachers" for extra studies during saturday and sunday. Within a 20 years, there will be more than enough supply, they are the REAL THANG
  • Mr Jones - Proud of SDP
Brilliant rally. Your team spoke intteligently and the message was clear and understandable to every Singaporean. Please don't change your respective speeches.

Teo Soh Lung, I bought you book 'Beyond The Blue Gate' and I encourage every Singaporean to buy one and understand what this true hero went thru, all because she chose to champion the rights of the meek and weak. If I did not have a medical condition, I would be there to fight with you thruout this election campaign.

Bring up the volume of your speeches and you people have a great thing going. Michelle Lee your speech was brilliant. Best wishes

I am the supporter of both Mr Chiam See Tong and Mr Low Thia Khiang. If Mr Chiam See Tong were to be in my ward, I will vote for Mr Chiam See Tong without hesitation because I know that he is fighting for us, Singaporeans.

The non-PAP must waork harder and stir up the PAP-drug toxication of $lumber.

Teacher Michelle Lee Juen I know you r disturbed by the apathy and lack of sympathy in our youth generated by the stifling and overly competitive demands of our education system. You ss a parent, an educator, and a Singaporean, i can see you feel deeply it imperative for compassion to be brought back to bear on all aspects of governance and i agree with you.

I salute your spirit and love for our children. I love you and your smile when you speak. i like your style.

Awesome Words

I used to think I was poor. Then they told me I wasn't poor, I was needy. They told me it was self-defeating to think of myself as needy. I was deprived. Then they told me underprivilege was over-used. I was disadvantaged. I still don't have a dime. But I have a great vocabulary.
