The New Paper ran a story today with the headlines: "Is he SDP's loose cannon". The report said that "it appeared that he (Dr Chee) was about to lead the group in a march before other party members intervened to stop it."

This was a public rally at the Yuhua Stadium on the evening of 28 April 2011. The event was witnessed by members of the public and The New Paper must be careful how it deals with this issue.

The rally ended and the crowd had started to file out of the stadium. The candidates and Dr Chee were on hand to thank them and say good night.

Along the way many of them asked for Dr Chee's autograph and wanted to take pictures with the SDP Secretary-General.

Dr Chee paused for long moments to oblige the supporters and to chat with them. Is this The New Paper's idea of a march? At no point did Dr Chee or anyone else plan to do a march. The newspaper should refrain from gutter journalism and spreading such untruths.

On the third rally at the Woodlands' Stadium, the candidates announced that they would be mingling with the supporters to personally greet them and answer whatever questions they might have.

When the rally was over, the candidates did exactly that. Several people wanted to take a picture with Dr Chee and to ask him to autograph their books. Dr Chee duly obliged. This was not unlike what happened at the Yuhua Stadium the night before.

The OMY went even further. It reported that Dr Chee had insisted on getting on stage to make a speech. As a bankrupt (he was made bankrupt in 2006 by Messrs Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong), he is not allowed to do so. This is utter rubbish. At no point did Dr Chee have any intention to get up on stage.

Is the SPH so desperate that it is reporting such nonsense and not focusing on the SDP candidates' message and our alternative proposals?

This short video clip was taken by TOC at the Woodlands' Stadium. Does it look like a protest march? The New Paper must be a responsible newspaper and stop writing nonsense.

  • No hope
Those who were present and can vouch for what was happening should write to The New Paper to strongly protest the slanted reporting.

They should be sued them for damages.
  • JackalRovers - OMG the mainstream are such liars
No respect for The New Paper tabloid for running that report. There is no protest march. I can vouch for that in the Woodlands Stadium. I was down on the running track with my two kids..mingling with all the candidates , shaking hands and making enquiries. Some section of the people was asking autograph from Dr. Chee, which he duly obliged..some asked for photograph, which he duly obliged. Then he moved to the exit with throng of well-wishers just curious and following to see a glimpse of him. If that is protest march, I be fallen dead right now. The tabloid The New Paper should apologize for making a negative false report.
  • firepower - SPH so desperate ?
It's PAP that is desperate! However,SPH is only the puppet, but that seem like a really desperate attempt to deflect the focus of the public from the real issues.

Well it all seems rather futile! But nice try SPH. Such faithful eunuchs!
  • leoman - Rise of the phoenix
As it was known, by hooks or by crooks, the ruling PAP, is still very critical of SDP & Dr Chee.

They are afraid, very afraid of the progresses and the rapid expansion of SDP.

The fact that many residents, many SDP supporters are seeking Dr Chee's autograph and uncompromising supports for the SDP, moves a few more bits up their thermometer.

I should say, STAY PRUDENT, STAY FOCUS.

Hard-handed and mean, harsh and smears are well known typical disgraceful abusive tactics of the PAP, when they face a strong-willed and enthusiastically supported SDP.

Well, prudence is the order of the day.

There come a day we shall see THE RISE OF THE PHOENIX.

    Wishing SDP's SUPERB 11:
Michelle,Vincent, Ang YG, Tan JS, James, John Tan, Sadavisam, Jarrod, Mohd Isa, Alec Tok & Teo SL, My vote goes to you.

    Yours anonymously,
    hush-hush
  • maxchew - Look fwd to 7 May and ignore them....
The 2 NP reporters were obviously instructed by their editors to look for trouble from Dr CSJ. They thus cooked their story when they saw the crowd surrouding Dr CSJ and moving around.

Forget those idiots and scums, SDP......more to come. Just concentrate on yout campaign and look fwd to 7 May 2011!
  • compassion republican - Carry babies taking photos
    Very interesting Headlines "Loose Cannon"
a person or thing that appears to be beyond control and is potentially a source of unintentional damage
Often used in Corporate World as a guy that they rock the boat or the organization

The correct Headlines should be "SDP Making Friends & Networking with the Voters"
Dr Chee were shaking hands, thanking voters, saying good night, signing autograph and taking pictures with the SDP Secretary-General.
Obama does that everything after he gave a speech, the same can be said about Bush, they often stop and "carry babies" taking photos and even talking to Journalist and Reporters usually they make completed semi-circle walk communciate with the grassroots too. This is common practise through-out the world, even in Communist Countries there is group photo taking.

( Testing your Boiling Points )
Sometimes harsh comments, Sometimes means words, Sometiimes unreasonable talks = all desgin to test your temper. You get angry, you loose money, you loose the match.
The more emotional you shown, the more they will pick on you. Until you say something really stupid and get sued. It really reveal your maturity to handles criticism and brush it off. After election, it is all about court case.

( Fix your eyes on the voters )
Keep your hands on the prize, keep your eyeballs on the voters. The last election was a Tang Liang Hong being a chinese chauvinist. The most recent election was about James Gomez application forms. When you go into mud throwing, it become a circus side shows.
Only a few days left for campiagning, drop those silly bickering, are you going to response on every silly comments out there ??? you can't time is running out to reach as many voters as possible.
The whole country will judge how you respond, if SDP has really mature, or it is just PR marketing that SDP had change her image. It is your call

  • compassion republican - brush it off & laugh
Sometimes reporters are nasty and means, which I think it is just "testing the water" too see how emotional you are, the more you react, the more they hound you. Look at Princess Diana, the reporters just keep on hounding & hounding her.
It is all acting and for show only lah.

Republican Bob Dole said:"Will you leave your kids with President Clinton ???" (monica lewinsky trial)
Bill Clinton choose not to reply.
In the end, the voters gave the best answers Are you suggesting he is a child molester???"
Fox News once ask President Bush:" why didn't you do anything, there were remarks like you are retarded...
Bush reply I am not going to sink so low into such politics of never-ending comments.

"Drag the water, some more" the more you reply, the muddier the water becomes, you are on the loosing end.

Learning from the Best. It is common practise, that Clinton Team or Obama Team often buy (donut & coffee) to reporters. Even when they said nasty words, they usually laugh it off as a pinch of salt then brush it off by "re-directing the real issue of bread & butter" back on the table. Election is not about Individuals, let go back to the VOTERS concerns
  • JM - Shame on you SPH
    Shame, shame, shame...
  • ilovesdp - don't censor
something must be done to stop this. its not being fair to sdp and its misleading the readers of the paper.

why cant they be more responsible to their readers? why are they giving them half-truths, or even no truths at all?

    SDP! :)
  • ALEE1100 - Not surprised
Why am I not surprised by a report like this? If the ruling party can do anything to make it more difficult for the SDP during election time because the SDP is a real threat to them, you can bet your life they will!

Remember the PAP is your enemy and be strong. Don't let their false reports distract you from winning some seats in this election. Go SDP!

Btw I was also at Yuhua and can vouch that no such thing happened. I stayed till the very end because some of my friends were wanting to speak with Ms Teo Soh Lung, so I would have known if there'd been a protest.
  • No hope
Another thing. Right after GCT says, "Let's have a clean fight," and saying that he won't comment on other constituencies' candidates, he nicely turns around and starts disparaging Tan Jee Say! WTH!

That's another low-blow, dirty slur in the same vein as VB's earlier attack.

TJS was his PPS for many years, surely a reflection of GCT's astute judgement and selection criteria?

If GCT thinks he may have misjudged TJS, then his judgement was and is suspect. So why should we trust his judgement now about anything?

PAP ministers and MPs still want to fight and attack others but they have absolutely no idea how to. They can't even string together a simple argument.

This is the result of a long history of cultivating back-door parliamentarians, who are mollycoddled and muted with humongous salaries, and of the incorrigible inbreeding within the PAP. This is the beginning of the end for them. They are doomed.
  • Stanley
LOL! Dont forget, TNP under SPH, SPH under Temasek Holdings, Temasek Holdings under HoChin, Hochin under Lee Hsieen Loong (or top, I dunno k, private life)

p.s. I boycott TNP & ST at least till polling day. Just read online or get TODAY paper if u have the obsessive need to read official PAP mouthpiece.
Even CNA website is biased. If u need GE news, go to...

btw if this goes on trial, no worries, many people like myself took pictures, videos (real time) & eye witness. so dont this distract SDP too much, cheers! :-)
  • Robox
The media sure wasted no time descending into the same gutter that their political masters are most comfortable inhabiting, did they?

With a few days of left of rallies, this is the best time to know where the media's (as well as the PAP government's) Achilles' heel is and take advantage of it; it's their chronic need to save face in the eyes of the public.

Tell, all rally attendants what really happened, tell them why it happened - to deprive them of a choice, depite calling themselves a nation building press - and whip up antagonism against the media involved.

I'm sure it will pay dividends.
  • Robox
I am going to smear the PAP right back.

At Saturday's PAP rally, this is what another member of the racist party of Singapore had to say:

"My friends tell me I must shake my head a bit when I speak Tamil", after speaking a few words in Tamil at last night's rally."
  • No hope
I've weaned myself off from MSM almost completely.

First, what's the point? It's not news but fairy tales especially when it comes to local politics. Second, their news is almost always late or behind. What is funny is that 1- or 2-day old news is still listed under 'Breaking News'. Almost all the time.

My main news source now is Google News, which is a real-time aggregate of all the news reports from around the world as they are published.

Yahoo and MSN are also good. A LOT of anti-PAP views in Yahoo Singapore Scene.
  • Dave
Dear Mr Chee, this is the first time I'm writing a comment on this site. I felt I had to.

I've always respected your enthusiasm in our local politics, though like everyone else I only understood you better when this new age media became accessible to the lot of us who have always been influenced by the other side.

I've read what others have written, even above, and I can't help but feel that you are repeatedly falling into the traps the PAP and 'their media' keep laying for you.

Those above who've written that they have evidential videos, photos etc will mean squat to everyone else who's still reading the MSM. And I'm sure, you of all people, will know all your good intentions of being anywhere near that rally will only be used against you.

By the time that 'evidence' can even see the light of day, the damage to your Party would've already been done in this election.

My humble advice to you, my kind Sir, lay low. At least for now. Once, and if, your very credible and capable colleagues have both feet in parliament, only then should you come up to the front and then guide the next team in into the very next election.(I truly hope and pray they do).

You are a leader who has to lead, but we know that your opponents have laid a very very unfair battlefield for you. That's ok. Play by their rules, for now. Only, for now.

For we know as the dust settles we'll see you walking through it over that hill.

  • Wee - SPH & Media are all nuts!
We singaporean are always lead, mislead by SPH and the local media. Only show the good of PAP and Singapore. We became so naive and not competitive because we are treated like babies after we given power to PAP. When election, they will throw some sweet and then after they will increase this and that to take it back. PAP became so powerful that they totally forgotten about the feeling of the citizen.
I believe they are so well fed for the past 30 yrs and r cashing out now. I hope we have more opposition to ask PAP to show the account.
  • uber_stud_87
Not only TNP, Lianhe Wanbao also had the news.

    http://blog.omy.sg/wbnews/files/2011/05/01-May11-b-cover.jpg

Both newspapers have already misled the public. So please force both TNP and Lianhe Wanbao to make public apology. If not, sue them to public awareness of their biased and fabricated news, and for media freedom!
  • Angel
This is what will be expected from the main stream local media. They are the mouth piece of the government. That's why it is important that whatever that is said by the party members must be properly framed so that it won't be misquoted by them and it would tomorrow's headlines. Anyway, this shows how many can in Singapore are willing to sell their soul to the devil by selling away their integrity and conscience. This is most unfortunate of our Singapore today. As the present incumbent government has lost its moral compass and has trickled down to its people, the mind set of the people have to be change for the good of our future. We need more people to stand up for the truth and be more willing to think of the others. However, change has to begin with us.
  • citizenofsingapore - Dont be fooled into a war of words done thru local
    To SDP and Tan JS,
As a citizen that is unhappy with our living conditions in Singapore, it need for change is quite obvious. However, i do want to encourage SDP to carry on the moral highground and do not fail into PAP's trap of a war of words thru the local media - you cannot win because they have the last say.

Dont let them distract them from the bread and butter issues...stick to it, and remind voters the obvious, if GST is increased in the next few years, can we say NO. If ERP is increased can we say NO. If medical cost goes up, can we say NO. If PAP implements some stupid policy to marginalize Singaporeans, can we say NO. That what matters to Singaporeans. Singaporeans needs to be reminded of this...when GST was increased to 7%, every singaporean complained...but to NO AVAIL. Remind Singaporeans of this...

Finally to Mr Tan, do not be too upset by Mr Goh's comments. Take the moral high ground, and tell him let the people of singaporeans decide...and refocus on the bread and butter issue....

All the best and i do hope you give PAP a run for their money. You are not contesting in my consitituency, but you have my support.

  • Tan Tai Wei
This looks like defamation, just like GCT's on Tan.

Shanmugam defends Goh's remarks, claiming that, as Tan is basing his reputation importantly upon his professional credentials when working for Goh, it is pertinent for Goh to provide his assessment of Tan's creditability.

But it has only been Tan's experience as Principal Personal Secretary to Goh that has been claimed, and Goh now has indeed confirmed that, acknowledging "he worked hard", etc. His would-be ability and performance as "permanent secretary", nor any other work capacity, has never been mentioned.

So, how is Goh's saying that Tan wasn't cut out to be permanent secretary relevant as a fair rebuttal of Tan's claims?

And it seems slanderous and defamatory, another instance of attempted character assassination. Goh's remarks insinuate that Tan's reason for leaving the civil service was due to his being, or the potential of his being passed over for promotion, and not the honourable one, say of his having been talent-scouted by, or his quest for more challenges in the private sector. Further, that Tan's entering politics might be motivated dishonourably by vengeance, in order to settle a longstanding grouse against Goh for passing him over, etc.

In short, the insinuation is that Tan has lied about his offering to serve the electorate, that he is dishonourably motivated by personal enmity, and is attempting to make use of voters to settle an old score.

Now, even if Goh has not intentionally thus insinuated, precedence in our courts has been repeatedly set that it is the meaning audiences of libel are likely to take that should decide the case.

Check it with "retired lawyer" Teo. Provided Tan has more confidence than Chee as regards our judiciary's "independence", perhaps he should sue!
  • ganeshsk - What Protest March!!!
I see the PAP doing this all the election or no election.

So just because a Dr. Chee who is under OA's jurisdiction does it is considered a protest March!!! OMG what is happening to our news paper reporters getting paranoid.

Please report the news as you see it.

The video shows Dr. Chee bidding every body good nigh and the crowd dispersing. There is no regular formation dispersing.

Honestly these slanting news is making me sick and tired.
  • Ah Qiang - Beware of last minute dirty tricks by state media
Dear SDP, well done once again for last night rally at Clementi. I will not forget supporters, the family of Germans (for whatever reasons you are there) and others with less than noble intentions, had to brave going up a hill in near darkness, avoid uncovered drains and muddy spots to reach the god forsaken site.

Keep focus on the issues you have brought up so far. The other party will focus on distractions as they realised they had a very formidable team.

Be especially careful as we gets nearer to polling day as I believe last minute bombardments will occur so as to make use of the cooling off (again a first in the world) day to sway the voters. I will be doing my job to ensure that my family, neighbours, friends and colleagues are being not being mislead and kept informed of alternative media.
  • compassion republican - I survived the GE concert
In the coming days, the Journalist and Reporters will try to "press all the buttons" to make you really HOT
And understanding so...as only a few days left for campaigning

( Having a bad day, it a bad idea )
If you get upset easily, this will affect your ability to do anymore campaigning.
Someone will had to step forward to say:"Knock it off, both of you" drop these bickering. Walk it off = usually means "cool down yourself" by walking away.
This causes you to had a bad day, you are so upset, the mood is disturb you can't do anymore fishing for voters. ONLY a few days left, this is so crucial

( Doing that Executive Behavior )
Fisherman for voters. You are better rewarded by networkings with the voters, look at NSP Rallies the took the opportunity to ask the crowds not to leave striaght aways. NSP staffs goes around doing recruitment asking auidences to sign up for NSP Volunteers Corps.

Your best reply to the Journalist, it not what you say to them, but it is what you do on the pitch making home runs and wining the match. Wining a SMC, or GRC, or attain a unexpected result, or even get in as Nominated MP into the house is the best answer you could slient the critics
  • MF - LKY school of journalism
We read with such shock and disbelieve what was actually WRITTEN and PUBLISHED by a supposedly Government approved paper and associated by the national press.

Such unreal reportage should have got the journalist fired and loose his/her license.

LKY ever sued Bloomberg and Far Eastern Economic Review, 2 big names which have world class professional journalism. Yet allowed such low class journalist on board our own local paper?!
What standard are we showing to the world?

This have become real shame and dishonor for our nation. Shame to the university they graduated.

Such nasty journalist should be reported and black-listed to the Foreign Correspondent Club.
  • No hope
    @MF

    It's not the journalists' fault.

The reporters write the article. Their editor will edit (and change) the story and submit it to the chief editor who vets (and maybe change further) the story and is the one who decides the final version that gets printed. The chief editor answers to his bosses - the newspaper owners - and has to obey them.

It was the objective of LKY, the day he became PM, to own and control ALL newspapers and media in Singapore, so that he could brainwash the people and hide the truth from us. Unfortunately for him and his PAP, the Internet was born. It is now a huge, wild beast which is going to chew them up and spit out their bones.

They can try their old tricks but, as anyone can see, it’s working less and less. These are the desperate clutches of a drowning leader and his party.
  • Prime Citizen
BUY your T_shirt and support SDP, i got mine with Dr Chee signature too.

Ok, in the old days when LKY was prime minister, Singapore was like a old style hawker center. LKY was a good and cheap PM. Value for money. So when he was rude and shouts at SIngapore, and on occasions causes food poisoning to his hated customers (opposition), we take it because like hawkers that serve good food, we will queue up and take all manner of abuse from the hawker to get great food at dirt cheap prices...

So LKY and his team slowly upgraded the hawker into food court. Food more expensive but now got aircon. Hawkers still rude but we all still can handle the bad service for decent affordable and cleaner food.

Then his son took over and decided change the food court into huge high class resturant. No more food court choices. The food became very expensive and the utensils and cutlery were designer stuff. THe food was no longer what the usual customers liked but they had no choice. Before you can even order, the peanuts and towels were charged. Then you order the food say roast fillet mignon but the food that came was over cooked char siew. You asked to return the charsiew but was told by the waiter in a beautiful uniform who insisted that the char siew was fillet mignon. But when angmos and foreigners come in, they get the real fillet mignon even when they order only salad. Their bill is always salad pricing.

So you had to eat badly cook charsiew and was slapped a very expensive bill. You decided to complain and ask to see the manager. The manager is not around.

Then one day, you found that a small hawker stall opened up next to the resturant. The food seems reasonable but you are not sure...The big resturant tells you not to go eat there because you will get food poisoning...SHould you risk it? Then the big resturant tell you that they will let you have fillet mignon at discounted price again...Do you trust this big resturant after your experience?

If PAP wants us to endure their bad service and bad attitude, they must be like hawkers, cheap and good. If they want to operate like French resturant and charge us $$$$, then PAP service has to be perfect. No charsiew disguised as fillet mignon. Not about your salary? Yes it is about what we get for what we pay. The same reasoning you use to let Foreign talents and workers into Singapore right?
  • govineela - Protest march
Ridiculous. I am the one in this picture dressed in my favourite army blouse. (see the picture) The SDP supporters were lining up near the gate for us, the crowd to shake hands with them. I was also excited and waited to shake hands with Dr Chee and the others. There was no such thing as a March. We were standing in line waiting for some who were taking photos and getting autographs signed by Dr Chee
Does this mean we were also in the March. Whoever mentioned there was a March, please wake up. I did.

Awesome Words

Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity. Those who clearly recognize the voice of their own conscience usually recognize also the voice of justice.
