Singapore Democrats

The Singapore Democratic Party welcomes the resignation of the Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong from cabinet. The SDP has, in our Shadow Budget 2011, called for the posts created in the Prime Minister's Office to be abolished as they serve no useful purpose except to drain the national budget.

We call on the Prime Minister to make these removals permanent as well as to go one step further to also abolish the positions of the Ministers-without-portfolio. The Government has never adequately explained to the people what these ministerial posts are for and why they are needed for the efficient running of the country.

The removal of these position will free up to $15 million in salaries paid to these ministers that could be put to better use such as increasing assistance for needy families in Singapore.

If the motivation is for the younger generation to take over the leadership of politics in Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew should completely retire from the political scene. The clean break would truly signal a new beginning for politics in Singapore and for democracy to start its belated development.

Don't think he LKY will totaly break free from ruiling Singapore. Unless he is dead. Knowing him, he will surely rule from his home like what happened to Empress Dowage Cixi. He would still get his nose in the government. Singapore is not free unless he leave totaly.

There cannot be a more honest statement, and one that is consistent with the SDP's stand than this.

No country on earth that is or claims to be First World has 8 people to do the job of just 2, and by bleeding the public coffers in the same process.
  • Robox
The funniest part of all of this is that, during the elections campaign especially, it was the SDP that was accused of wanting to "spend, spend, spend" and with that, the implications of "raiding the reserves".

Yet, Singaporeans don't seem to be able to see the wasteful public expenditure by the same PAP that they are supporting by accusing the SDP of such, wasteful expenditure like having 8 duds to do the work of 2, to give just one example.

    Dear SDP,

Thanks for posting such news, but in actual fact, believe this is a tactical planned move, which was very well planned before the elections, prior to help his son to secure the mandate needed, since current backlash of resentment against PAP had been felt very very heavily way way before.

Nevertheless, at this point in time, suspect PAP will go all out further in bringing about greater influx of foreigners(about 900,000 work permits+families = 1.5 - 1.8 million), particularly from china and india, due to companies investments from these countries.

Thus, native singaporeans will be naturally marginalized by then, well before the next GE, at an estimated ratio of 2:1 in favour of foreign new citizen entrants.

Hence, wonder how SDP and other opposition parties would perform due to such change in demographics.

Besides, would wish to add further on the subject of Reserve monies, which was a hard earned monies over the generations of native singaporeans.

Therefore, in view of current trend of change in the demographics of population, feel it's unfair for the government to hold with the reserve monies, which will only be taken over by the foreign new citizens over the period of time eventually.

Hence, to be fair, it's appropriate that the reserve monies of at least 1/3 of the amount to be returned to the original born native singaporeans before succumbing to others. Well, this is only my personnel view, and perhaps I may be proven wrong otherwise.

I've said before that Goh's being SM was only for rationalising LKY's remaining after Goh's stepping down as PM; it would seem odd if Goh retired and yet LKY continued - LKY would seem overly "unique".

This appears now to have been indeed so - LKY leaves the cabinet, and so also Goh!

And as regards high pay for ministers, we might also observe this, which we should hope isn't true.

After losing Aljunied, two ministers quit, and the other seem also intending to.

Well, they had been recruited from their potentially highly paid jobs to "serve" with promiseof , among other things, comparable if not higher pay. And election victory then was guaranteed.

Now, to remain and serve and "walk the ground" towards the next election would be without pay, and with no promise of success, indeed probably promise of failure, as the history of Hougang and Potong Pasir shows.

So they quit, in order to go back to their highly paid jobs? Or they lack the stamina for politics for enduring failure, like Jeya and Chiam in those days, and Chee today? So, tea-party recruitment with high- pay incentives does not conduce to getting in persons with the character and commitment for politics and service? We wonder.....

Mr Lim Swee Say should also resign. He claimed to have too much money in his CPF account and that it won't run away. What he don't seem to realise is that we might not be alive then to enjoy our hard earned money (Cash prior to Funeral). Disgusting speech he gave. Can't tolerate it.

Can SDP demand that the PAP government hands off in all the religious councils as well. We don't need PAP involved in MUIS or any of the religious councils totaly. Let the community of that fate handle their own affrairs. And we don't need one of the member in the faith to be a PAP minister or MP.
  • G_Chen - Overdue
Long Overdue, they should pay back all the taxpayers' money wasted for all these years..Agreed with Robox that SDP has always been consistent. The fact is SDP and Dr Chee have proposed many constructive ideas and the party has always been the most creative, progressive and new media savvy party in Singapore, thanks to those SDP's creative members.

I feel whatever SDP has done from the past to present, it has been on the right track. If SDP has to be blame for anything, it is because they are avant garde and dare to venture where many dare not. For that I will always respect Dr Chee, Ms Chee and all the others who were persecuted for doing what is right and in the process exposed the flaws/inconsistencies in our government. Therefore while SDP's "branding" may appear slower as compared to another, they should be proud that they did it without sacrificing their integrity and uniqueness (i.e. what they stand/fight for).
  • SBG - Quit as MPs as well
Please quit as MPs as well and call for by election for the 2 GRCs. Resign from cabinet right after GE is "cheating" voters who voted for heavyweight minister in GRC.

If PAP wins in by election, they would have clear mandate.

If they lose, they would have PRECIOUS opposition voices in parliament instead of "climbing the corporate ladder" "yes, sir" MPs.

This is what we called win win situation for PM Lee.

But if there is really one, I guess all opposition party would want to contest. The best is west side SDP + RP, east side WP + NSP.

May be mr Lee Kuan Yew will pass away in 2014, and Dr Chee will be unbanned from election (2016) and we can really see and experience a real pure democracy in our nation for good. Noone can prevent anyone from hope and i hope the best for all democrats in Singapore !

I still don't understand, the PM not yet form new cabinet ministers after the GE, why these two idiots resign, they are no longer ministers after the previous parliament dissolved. It should be,they are not willing to take up SM/MM post in the new cabinet instead of saying resign.

  • jsraj - Spot on Dr Chee..
Dr Chee, thank you for highlighting the need to trim the portfolios in the Prime Minister's Office.

A search at the government directory http://www.sgdi.gov.sg/ reveals, that the Prime Minister's office having the following Ministerial Positions:

    PM – Lees Hsien Loong
    MM – Lee Kuan Yew
    SM – Goh Chok Tong
    SM – Jayakumar
DPM – Wong Kan Seng ( also corodinating minister for NATIONAL SECURITY )
DPM – Teo Chee Hean ( Minister for Defence)
    Minister – Lim Boon Heng
    Minister – Lim Swee Say
Minister – Lim Hwee Hwa ( 2nd Minister for Finance & Transport)
Minister of State – Heng Chee How

    the departmenst that fall within the Prime Ministers office are;

    (1) CPIB
    (2) National Population and Talent Division
    (3) Elections Department
    (4) National Security coordination secretariat
    (5) National climate change secretariat
    (6)narional reseacrh foundation
    (7 ) Public Service division
    (8) Justice of Peace

Why in the world does the Prime Ministers Office need so many mainisters and why so many carrying double portfolios?

What in the world does the PMO have got to do with climate change?

Why do they need to be in charge of population and talent? What is Vivian Balakrishnan doing then as Minister of Community Development and whats the MANPOWER Ministry doing then?

There is definitely a need to trim the salaries and unnessary ministerial posts.

We can help the homeless and less fortunate and the elderly with this money alone which can run into millions of dollars a month.

On an another note, hi Geoffrey Gomez, we met at the rally at Bukit Panjang and also at Woodlands.

Hey this old man is smarter than e think!

Better quit than get fired. Might get voted out instead so better quit now.

    Smart old fox!
  • Social_justice
Good that they are leaving. They perform a bad job so out they go. As simple as that. They receive incredible salaries, so we are expecting perfection from them. We are sending them a signal that a single blunder and out they go. That's all.

Anyway, these people will 'retire' as billionaires.
