Singapore Democrats
The Singapore Democrats remained steadfast on our Road To 2016 by continuing our groundwork at the Tanjong Pagar GRC. We held our trademark block party at Chinatown yesterday evening.
Jointly organised by the party's Community Services and Ground Operations Units, residents at several blocks in the area were invited to the gotong royong to get to know each other as well members of the SDP.
The turnout was great and, by the looks of things, the gathering was just as meaningful.
It was a great opportunity to listen to our fellow citizens and hear of their worries and concerns, and, more important, learn how we can help to make the system work better for everyone.
Several raised issues of financial hardship. Their problems are compounded by the on-going difficulty in the economy and the fact that the Government's policies work against them.
Our members were on hand to make referrals as well as to provide assistance. Mr Irwan Sahrul who took over as head of the Community Services Unit from Dr Vincent Wijeysingha will be conducting workshops to train members in social work skills.
Clearly, the residents were appreciative of our initiative and many indicated that they were happy to see our presence in the neighbourhood. On our part, we were grateful for the opportunity to serve and to be welcomed into their midst.
This is the second block party that the party has held. The first was at Ghim Moh at the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC (see here). We will continue to hold such get-togethers for residents over the months .
