Singapore Democrats

To: The Wall Street Journal

I refer to the letter by Mr Lee Kuan Yew's press secretary (Two Views of Freedom of Speech and Law in Singapore, June 30, 2008) in which she quoted me as calling, in open court, "Singapore leaders 'murderers, robbers, child molesters' and 'rapists'."

The outrageousness of Madam Yeong's lie borders on the comedic. Mr Lee Kuan Yew, or his counsel, is in possession of court transcripts and audio-recordings that would show whether I had uttered those words. He must now produce the part of the transcript that quotes me saying those words or he risks destroying his own credibility.

Mr Lee and his prime minister son, Mr Lee Hsien Loong, sued the Singapore Democratic Party and its executive members for defamation over an article we published in our party newsletter criticising the non-transparent and non-accountable manner in which Singapore was run.

The Lees obtained summary judgment from the courts despite our defence in which we cited disputes of fact and law. In other words, there were triable issues. The summary judgment meant that we were found guilty without given the chance to defend ourselves, call for witnesses and cross-examine the plaintiffs.

Mdm Yeong also says that "Singapore upholds free speech." Yes, and Mr Mugabe has just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Your readers might care to know that I have been repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for speaking in public and I face several more such charges. Seventeen of my associates have been charged for conducting a protest against the raising of prices by the Singapore government.

It is also noteworthy that Freedom House stated: “Singapore citizens cannot change their government democratically."

We are not advocating a Western- or Asian-style of democracy. We want a democracy based on universal principles as enshrined in the Singapore Constitution and United Nation's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

By the way, Mr Lee sued us in his personal capacity. Why is he using Mdm Yeong, a civil servant, to write the letter on his behalf?

Two Views of Freedom of Speech and Law in Singapore
June 30, 2008

Your editorial ("Democracy in Singapore," June 26), relying on a "partial transcript," has misunderstood the issue in the libel case involving Dr. Chee Soon Juan and his sister.

The case had nothing to do with political freedom. It was for defamation arising from the Chees' false claims that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Lee Kuan Yew are criminals and corrupt. Despite being advised by a Queen's Counsel, they failed to produce any credible defense or evidence to back up their claims.

Having lost, Dr. Chee in open court then called the Singapore leaders "murderers, robbers, child molesters" and "rapists." The Chees also rebuked the judge, ignored her orders and shouted her down. In Ms. Chee's defense, her lawyer could only claim that she was "almost paranoid." This is why the judge sentenced the Chees to imprisonment for scandalizing the court.

Many opposition politicians routinely criticize government leaders, but are not sued because they have not uttered slanderous falsehoods. Contrary to your editorial, Singapore upholds free speech and the right to disagree, subject to the law.

Singapore's laws must be decided by Singaporeans, not by foreigners like Gopalan Nair, who is a U.S. citizen, or by the foreign media. Foreign media are entitled to report and comment on what is happening in Singapore, but they circulate here subject to Singapore law. They have no right to defame, to give a skewed account of court proceedings, or to engage in Singapore politics, for example, by campaigning for their version of Western style "democracy" for Singapore.

Yeong Yoon Ying
Press Secretary to Minister Mentor
Singapore

Thank you for bringing the pitiful and shameful court proceedings in Singapore to Journal readers' attention. We citizens of the U.S. often take our freedom of speech, press and assembly for granted; and at times we assume that such rights are free.

Especially in the electronic age and with tools via the Internet and blogs, the power of true freedom in self expression is to be valued and needs to be protected by all citizens of this world. Thanks for sticking your neck out on our behalf.

Andrew T. Cheng

  • A.Chia - LKY has no single ounce of integrity
We the citizens of Singapore do not need leaders who are so called "first class" but holds not a single tinge of integrity. I grew up learnig that making money and being top in class are not all in life, there are other things more important than money and being top, which are character, integrity, honesty, compassion, kindness, graciousness, etc. Yet we do not see any of these in this self exalted "father to singapore". it is really a shame. Is this the way a top leader set examples to Singaporeans? Then do not lament that Singaporeans are lacking in being gracious towards one another.

We learn from our leaders. What is at the bottom flows down from the top. Thank God I still have my own senses and am still able to turn my eyes away from people who deny justice and deny truth, and people who are unscrupulous. Looking at the way this aged elderly attack people who disagree with him just magnify how small he is inside. We all know why bullies bully in schools. Cos they are so small and fearful inside of them and he seems to fit into such a figure. Does he think we will believe that Dr. Chee had made those remarks? If so, we would have heard audio recordings with such remarks from Dr.Chee on national TV already. But we have heard none.

  • Paul - Put up or shut up
LKY, you should put up or shut up. If you cannot prove it from the full court transcripts and audio recordings then you should give an unreserved apology. We are as kind to you as you are cruel to us. It is not a tough decision and you are highly paid to take such decisions.

That hysterical response does nothing but confirm that LKY has gone from Prime Minister to Senile Minister to Minister Mental. Come on, old man, let's see you do something right for once. Are you big enough to accept you can be wrong?

As is happening to our neighbour up north, desperadoes have to resort to desperate measures even if blatant lies have to be told IN YOUR FACE.
Was it Ms Yeong's idea or was it added on by her boss? Child molestors and rapists? My God, why are they stooping so low?
  • Tan Tai Wei
That "press secretary" obviously had not followed the events, not even read the press (but Lee must have seen the letter before its despatch?).

The Chees called them robbers and criminals? No, they drew similarities between NKF's and government's management, and the court agreed with the Lees' interpretation that that implied they were "corrupt", like Durai. Even the Lees did not use the word "robbers". And how do "murderers " and "child molesters" and "rapists" come in?

The Chees didn't produce a credible defence? This seems to imply there was a hearing, and the Chees did a poor defence, and to suppress the fact that It was a "summary judgement" that the Lees got.

Miss Chee shouted the judge down? With that swollen cheek and toothache, and struggling to complete sentences and pronounce words?

Foreigners cannot comment on our laws? Suppose we decide to murder all babies. Foreigners should not comment? We have the right to it as long as our laws permit it? Have we not denounced, say, apartheid in other countries?

And by criticising our laws, foreigners are attempting to make laws for us? I don't follow the inference!

If what One Nation Under Lee shown is true, then I am very sad that these hypocrites are the supposed 'saviours' or 'great leaders' that led SG to the '1st World Ctry' that she is today.

Its a pity all these scandals dont make it to the Shit Times or Mediacorpse news. If there are still any doubters on the integrity of the PAP Leegime, then pls tell me why are they hiding so many things?

Dont tell me that "The Great Battle b/w Lee Sr and Jr vs the Chee Siblings" are not worthy of letting the nation know? Isnt it a matter of great national importance? Fancy that, The Great Lees vs the Chees who alledgedly defamed them. Wouldnt the Lees all the more, want to telecast this to silence all the critics and prove that they have nothing to hide??

All this court cross-examintations should be in History textbooks. If the Lees believe they still have that bit of integrity left, they should come out and explain to the Singapore Citizens every single question that is posted to them. After all, these are the PUBLIC SERVANTS that are supposed to serve the people and are accountable to them.

Also, if Lee Myung Bak of S Korea can donate his entire salary he earned as President to the poor...doesnt this put our money-faced million dollar minister to shame?

Dear Dr Chee and all SDP members,

While it's heartening to see that SDP has been trying very hard to expose the lies of PAP, however i feel that Singaporeans have been brought up in this mindset such that most of them do not really care about such matters.

The only matters that they care about is usually about working, paying the bills, spending time with family etc. And these people, i feel, don't really expose themselves to other sources of news other than the propoganda ST. Currently, most of the newer generation, who have been schooled about Animal Farm, human rights, freedom of speech etc.. are the ones who sit up and think.

Singaporeans have this fear that any remarks made against PAP will make their pockets hurt. Thats why noone wants to stand out except for a handful.

Singaporeans are like this: SDP sells their newspaper/gives speech etc. Singaporeans will stop and listen, but after all that is over, most of them will just resume their daily lives and think of SDP as 'just-another-opposition'

And even if one day, IF an opposition party really takes over, will SG prosper? Well think about it, most of the companies currently are held by ministers or people related to them e.g F&N,Singtel,SPH,Temasek etc to name a few. These companies might 'gang-up' on the opposition ruling party and i dont know what they might do to the economy to cause it to crash and then put the blame on the opposition's supposed 'incompetency' to lead SG.

By then i guess the country that we call Home will be in ruins within 5 years, as LKY said. 'Great' foresight of LKY or execution of a pre-planned move to blame the opposition for doing a lousy job?

Agreed but I think all the other ministers must surely care. After all, its also their integrity at stake. Its relatively quiet and one wonders what is on their mind.

  • Yoong Kheong - Confusion
I always end up in a state of confusion over such incidents where both parties lay out differing descriptions of the incident.

Is the SDP hiding part of the transcripts? It's important to note that those provided recordings were just excerpts from what the court actually heard.

    OR

Is the ruling party trying to find an excuse so that it does not shine in such a bad light.

SDP has Part A info and PAP has Part B info. We Singaporeans need to seriously know what is the entire ongoings...

This Yoong Keong, possibly another Hakka mole in here, has been keeping up his 'request' that full transcripts be released - and we don't see him go badger Dave Singhapore for them, why??? - EVER SINCE THE FIRST AUDIOS AND TRANSCRIPTS APPEARED ON THIS WEBSITE.

WTF is your real intention and agenda, Hakka Yoong???

Aren't what you have heard - all of the world has heard - not enough to convince you what we have all known all along?

That this Pa and Boy team is not all that they have been made out to be - or rather, not what THEY MAKE THEMSELVES OUT TO BE, especially that shameless old man who even writes book after book to try to sink in that hol-no-water-wishful-thinking of his.

This, after all, is the penultimate important significance of the tapes, you goondu Yoong of that same ethnic barbaric creed trying to do a Chinese!

  • Eeeediot
Yup, i agree with 'a few good man' that there are probably PAP MPs who are actually willing to make a change to the lives of the people but perhaps darent speak up against certain decisions for fear of getting into the Leegime's bad books.

And to be fair too, SDP didnt put up the full audio clip of the court proceedings =). But still the exchange that we hear b/w Chee siblings vs the Lees have raised doubts over whether the latter are the honest, uncorrupted leaders that the media supposedly paint them as or otherwise.

Does redrawing of boundaries at Cheng San area counts as honesty or something that people of good integrity would do?

And what does LHL meant when he said he had to spend more time thinking of how to outwit the opposition if they were voted into Parliament, instead of thinking of how to solve the peoples' problem?

That sounded like what a narrow-minded person would say. If he's really sincere in helping the people in his capacity as the PM, then he should show the people what he can do and maybe strive to better what the opposition have to offer. That's the mark of what a real leader would do...

Sodomy? Nah, gay activity is being condoned, Ah Loong won't go back on his promise to allow more such 'expressions'
as "we agree there are people with such lifestyles, their choice".

Besides, too un-original - we've always had UMNO copy PAP, never the other round, can't be seen doing anything, even mulling a thing like that.

What they may, or rather that senilely yours may do in his moment of absurdity - which is getting more often these days - is to stick a charge of INCEST against the Chees.

Every ounce of respect I had for Dr Chee and the SDP has just been drained from me, through this post by the SDP and Dr Chee. I was present at the court hearings, and heard Dr Chee make this statement. In fact, he actually mumbled it while Davinder Singh was making his remarks, and Davinder brought it to the attention of the judge by repeating it so that it would get included in the transcript. Upon which, Dr Chee included the last two words.

It's unbelievable that someone who wants to protect his reputation would stoop to such base tendencies, and that others, some of whom were probably present in court that day, will not correct it. I guess this is what the opposition in Singapore has boiled down to.

I'm afraid what you had said in your post can't even fool my 3 year old. We based on track records. In my opinion, LKY has a bad track record with regards to his own integrity in question. While Chee so far has not displayed any acts which he had done to discredit nor marginalised nor silence his fellow kinsmen. So it is easier to give the latter the benefit of doubt rather than the former. I had given the former many chances already, I really hope the day before he goes and meet his maker, he can see the light and repent so he need not suffer the flames of eternal hell. It is not too late to repent. (Sorry God, I know I am not supposed to judge if in this way I happen to be judging).

and ya right, agree with one of the posters above, this annonymous who had said he was at the court hearing, should at least put a name to yourself instead of staying annonymous. As you stay annonymous, how to even give you the benefit of the doubt?

    b) We can show our children the real nature of MM Lee. A picture says a thousand words to young children.

So, make that picture available for download, in BIGGER size.

I have just read Mdm Yeong's reply as reported in the website Chew directed us to. This is my initial impression.

Davinder has inferred that, by drawing similarities between the way NKF and the government has been run, Chee was saying that the Lees had been "corrupt" and were "criminals".

Chee then muttered that Davinder might as well also say Chee had meant they were "murderers" and "robbers". (Chee meant that according to the highly stretched inference Davinder was making, he might as well stretch it further to include allegations as far fetched as "murderers" and "robbers".)

Then Chee rubbed it in further and said that Davinder might as well also include "rapists" and "child molesters".

So, Chee's sarcastic denials of having committed libel has been misread to be his adding, somewhat stupidly, to the libel!

If I am right, then 1) either the press secretary or Lee hasn't learnt what in education parlance is called "listening comprehension" (which primary school students learn to do in language classes), or 2) they are deliberately, and therefore dishonestly, misrepresenting what Chee meant, in order to call him "liar" again (in which case, they seem to be not only liars, but subtle ones at that!).

John, to his classmate :" You are as light as a feather"

Classmate complained to principal: "John is a liar because he says I only weigh 0.01 gram"

The classmate's father: "My son is right because a feather weighs 0.01 gram"

    Case closed.

Firstly, I will have you know that I DO NOT SUPPORT and I DETEST the LEEgime. If you did not read properly what I said, then it's your fault for assuming that I am a pro-PAP supporter.

Secondly, what i meant was that IF by chance these PAPpy dogs managed to hold on to these companies top position. There's always a CHANCE. Thats why i am just suggesting what might happen and that the PAP might have this plan to blame the opposition for their so-called 'incompetency' to run the ctry.

Thirdly, never jump into conclusions quickly when u have not yet read my other comments. Clearly u can see I am against the propoganda Shit Times and MediaCorpse and also the dishonesty of the Leegime.

Fourthly, if the opposition manage to oust the PAPpy guys from their top positions in companies, thats the best thing to happen.

Lastly, I don't hate you for insulting me because I guess you misunderstood what i wrote. But i know that of all the bad personnel in PAP, there might be good and sincere PAP MPs willing to help the citizens albeit very little. So i guess that Dr Chee is trying to expose the Lees and their partners in crime so that once the MASTERMIND is gone and justice done upon them, will there be fair elections again(hopefully)

Therefore, multi-lingual anonymous, don't be such a cantankerous person and start lambasting people. Thanks =)

P.S Try to use a nick instead of anonymous so that when people RE, it's easier. And did you use the translator at dictionary.com? And one last thing: Boku wa Disney ga suki ja nai...
  • Eeeediot - RE: multilingual anonymous
Oh and i dont think one can just force the PAPpy guys off the top positions in company because they could have been shareholders or something.

Furthermore, throughout these years, these PAPpy men have accumulated who knows how much shit-loads of cash and assets... it might be a little hard to force them out if they are major shareholders in these companies.

Multi-lingual anonymous, even though both of us here support Democracy and detest the Lee Junta, i just can't help saying that judging by the way you berated my comment, you seem more like the juvenile here.

No offence though but if you really want to have a fruitful discussion here, please dont rant off without thinking first... 'muchas gracias'...

Yup, i agree that going by the character of Old Lee, if he really had the concrete evidence to nail Dr Chee, do you think he would have withheld it?
I bet Old Lee would have gone all the way, either publishing the full transcript or playing the audioclip on air.

It's obvious that Old Lee is hiding lots of info from the people. And also, that small little bit of text doesn't really show much. The 'as light as a feather' analogy is a good one =)

So for Dr Chee to win this once and for all, he may (if it's convenient for him) produce the full length audio-clip to counter LKY accusations.

Also, the declassified document from Britain is the key to exposing the lies of LKY and his wrongful imprisonment of Mr Lim Chin Siong.

The tyranny must end soon, either by the old man's demise or Dr Chee successfully exposing the true colors of the Lee FamiLEE..

    Dear Old Man,

I don't even have the courtesy now to call you any other name simply because you are really such a hypocrite.

After having caused untold misery to a lot of families whose family members who have been detained by you because of your selfishness and your cruelty towards your political dissidents, may we wish you all the worst that can happen to you and your families because of your selfishness.

We have already witnessed some misfortune that has happened to your family such as your grandsons having a mother who have to commit suicide because of you. Nobody would have thought that a smart person like you would have the misfortune of having a handicapped grandson in your family.

We believe that this is some kind of retribution for what you have done to your fellow citizens. May God bless you further misfortune should you and your family members continue to lie and steal from the people of Singapore.

So please stop your unscrupulous dealings so as to redeem the past sins that you have committed.

    od bless you.

Awesome Words

Justice is conscience, not a personal conscience but the conscience of the whole of humanity. Those who clearly recognize the voice of their own conscience usually recognize also the voice of justice.
