Of course the PAP has credible people within its ranks. With a former judge, a mathematician, a senior legal officer, top lawyers, medical doctors, economists, academics and senior journalists, who can gainsay that the ruling party is well endowed in the credibility department?

What about the opposition? According to some “poll watchers” Singapore's opposition has some ways to go before it can match the PAP. And as long as it cannot do this, electoral success will be elusive. (See report below)

Indeed, Mr Lee Kuan Yew avers that all he is trying to do with his hardball politics is to force the opposition to gather candidates whose competence and integrity can compete with that found in such abundance in his party.

Agreeing, Professor Eugene Tan says that the opposition needs to work towards gathering a “brain trust” and build up a “government-in-waiting.”

Even Workers' Party Chairman Sylvia Lim concurs, saying that the opposition needs to “focus on getting credible people elected into Parliament.”

Of course Mr Lee, Professor Tan and Ms Lim are absolutely right about electing only “credible” people into parliament. Which Singaporean wants to elect a bunch of riff-raff into the legislature?

Unfortunately, the three miss the point (Mr Lee deliberately, of course).

It may surprise readers that the long list of high-calibre professionals mentioned in the opening paragraph does not, in fact, belong to the PAP; it belongs to the opposition.

From Drs Poh Soo Kai, Lee Siew Choh, and Lim Hock Siew (medical professionals) to Mr David Marshall (our first prime minister) to Mr Jeyaretnam (former judge) to Mr Francis Seow (former solicitor-general) to Mr Tang Liang Hong (senior lawyer) to Mr Chia Thye Poh (mathematician) to Mr Said Zahari (journalist), Singapore had men of distinction serving in the opposition, men whose moral and intellectual calibre take no backseat to anyone in the PAP.

Even today, the opposition has no dearth of professionals, lawyers, PhD holders and medical professionals in its camp. Many more than measure up to the Lim Swee Says, Mah Bow Tans, and Wong Kan Sengs.

Admittedly, there is a distinction between the PAP men and those serving in the opposition: the ones in the latter group are not motivated by money.

Another difference is that while the credibility of the PAP folks need Viagra-like boosts from the media they control, oppositionists are persecuted in every manner conceivable. Credible Singaporeans, after joining the opposition and given the Straits-Times treatment, very quickly become not credible.

Not true? Think International Bar Association (IBA). The organisation was good and lauded by Mr Lee Kuan Yew because unlike other Western liberal NGOs, it understood what the PAP was about. That is, until it opined that the Lee system needed reform.

Overnight the IBA was relegated to the ranks of those out to destroy Singapore and therefore no longer credible. Never mind the fact that Mr Lee made absolutely no sense and that he was his usual disingenuous self. What is disconcerting is that no one dared to tell him to his face what he really is, an old autocrat in whose mind intellectual decency matters little.

In the same vein, Mr Lee and those who can't think differently continue to parrot the untruth that the opposition cannot attract “credible” Singaporeans. How can the opposition attract good people when we measure goodness according to the Book of Lee?

And for goodness' sake, how do we define it? Are paper qualifications the be-all and end-all of what constitute good national leaders? Do principles, passion and personal beliefs not count at all in the make-up of our ministers and parliamentarians? What is the benefit of having row after row of MPs whose "competence" are measured by whether they graduated with first- or second-class honours, but who care more about what their party boss thinks than about how policies they pass affect the people they say they serve?

Society must not continue to allow the PAP's conceptions unchallenged. More important, the opposition must have the intellectual capacity to, before accepting the notion that we cannot attract good candidates, examine whether this premise is, in the first place, true.

Remember, our biggest struggle is not against the PAP, it is against what the PAP has done to our minds.

Recruitment biggest challenge for Singapore's political parties, say analysts

Channel New Asia

Political watchers have said the biggest challenge for all political parties — both ruling and opposition in Singapore — is to recruit credible members.

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said on Friday that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) is trying to force the opposition to gather good candidates that will equal the PAP in integrity and competence so that if the PAP fails, there will be an alternative. He added, however, that the opposition has not been able to do so.

The opposition was out and about in the 2006 Singapore General Election. One political watcher said the parties need to keep up this visibility post elections, as well as to do more.

Eugene Tan, Assistant Professor at Singapore Management University's School of Law, said: "They need to be able to have that brain trust to be able to comment effectively on government policies and offer quality alternative. They need to rise above themselves, go beyond just being an opposition, to be — in a way — government—in—waiting."

Observers said another challenge for the opposition is to translate the good turnouts at the rallies to actual votes in the ballot boxes.

Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim is clearly aware of this. Her focus is to get enough credible people into Parliament. She admitted her party is far from being able to form a 'shadow Cabinet', or offer policy alternatives.

"Parliamentary presence is the first step, so we would still want to focus on getting credible people elected into Parliament," said Sylvia Lim, who is a Non—Constituency MP (NCMP).

"We may slog, we may work towards winning election, but in the end we may lose. So there has to be that spirit of perseverance to believe in the process — and getting Singaporeans to be involved in the process is just as important, if not as important as the outcome." She admitted, though, that recruitment is a challenge.

At a community event, MP Indranee Rajah told Channel News Asia that it is in the country's interest to have a good pool of talent, be it from the PAP or the opposition.

She said: "Just because we are a small country doesn't mean there is a lack of people to step up to the plate, if need be. As for the opposition, if they want to grow, really I think they need to identify those good candidates, they need to identify how to have a good organisation."

PAP MP Michael Palmer feels that from the last election, younger Singaporeans seem more willing to associate with opposition parties. For him, the over—riding problem for all political parties is getting capable people with integrity into politics.

For the opposition, this could mean some time before it can be an alternative to the PAP government.

    Excellently written.

Then SDP leaders should go meet that old fart Lee during his MP meet-the-people session and go tell him bluntly at his face the above that was written by SDP.

We'll all clap and cheer for SDP !

  • Mike Chan - We have many INCREDIBLE Oppo activistss!
Yes, the PAP esp the LKY may think they and only they have monopoly of "credible" leaders.
Let me tell LKY here and now that I believe that in this year 2008, S'pore has many INCREDIBLE Oppo leaders as well as incredible potential activist leaders.Just look at the 18 activists who were charged in court last week by your mata-mata with nothing better to do. Aren't all of them incredible to be so courageous and determined to fight for justice and fairness for the poor and disadvantaged in S'pore? They knew even b4 they joined the TakBolehTahan group in public that they would likely be arrested by LKY's Police and charged in court. Yet they swallowed their fear and bravely pressed ahead...come what may, this is a just cause we are fighting, for the sake of our fellow-citizens, our children, our families and the future!
We will overcome someday.....just you wait and see!
To me, all of them, esp the Chee siblings are INCREDIBLE HEROES.
  • V.Benedict - Hidden Dragon, Crouching Tiger Speech from LKY
Is this just another plot from LKY to promote his omniscience-PAP.

History already have had credible oppositions candidates. But his omnipotent have annihilated all!

What rubbish is he talking about!

PAP MPs talented meh? Most, especially those backbenchers are just...blah.
  • sideswipe - election system
considering 1/3 of eligible voters voted for opps. why is that the opps have only 5% of seats in parliament.
our election system of "single winner district" is a "cruel" method where nothing is given to the losers who get 49% of votes and winner take all with 51%.
we need proportional representation for at least 30% of seats to reduce the effects of gerrymandering and wasted votes.
The opposition have to do better but they are not really rejected by the public as some have said.
  • Sinister Minister
it's too bad so many people in government are missing a degree in common sense. the funniest thing... this one is free.
  • Madam YY Yeong
Are you so sure that all involved in the opposition politics are not motivated by money unlike the PAP?

At least for some people, being an opposition MP with a 14K monthly tax-free MP allowance is a good job prospect, plus a life-long pension after 2 terms in Parliament. No?
  • Anonymous
Mdm Yeong should remember that under present circumstances, only potential PAP MPs can be motivated by the MP allowance.

Candidates for the opposition, on the contrary, risk losing their deposits, even should they escape being sued.
  • Carslon
Who defines credibility? PAP? SPH? LEt me ask you, LKY, how many of your elitists in the current cabinet truly believe in "Don't ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"? Without the recent pay increase, how many will remind in the cabinet? This is peace time we are talking about now. When Singapore is in turmoil, will they stick with us and not rolling up their fat saving accounts looking for greener pasture. I think PAP has more credibility issue than opposition parties.
  • Andy - professionals
The example you gave is invalid because these so called professionals are spread around several parties throughtout the ages, which averaged to about very few meaningful statistics of professional people worth their salt in one party

Just talk about SDP - how many of your candidates are of good quality ?

    Tell singaporeans

Harry entered politics for an ideal - freedom from servitude and foreign domination. The British may had tried to break this ideal with the lure of money and promise of powers but they had never succeeded.

If you have told Harry in the 50s that the British has offered him a Swiss bank account + a retirement home somewhere in the Carribean, he would have thrown you out of the door.

Time and tide may have changed the conviction and righteousness of Lee. But that is never the reason to give up our pursue of political correctness.
  • Chew - Credibility?
PAP the echelon of credibility? Think again.

    MM Lee Kuan Yew:
    1) Proven hypocrite since 1955 with his speech about democracy which evidently is not present today.
    2) Many of his relatives "just happened" to be heading GLCs due to their "superb rare talents".
    3) Now known officially as not flawless and whatever he said need to be taken with a big pinch of salt, preferably down with NeWater, as his "facts" contain inaccuracy.
    4) Only dare to sue in home ground despite his yet another inaccurate claim that he will sue everyone who dare to defame him, latest being his failure to sue IBA for their "libelous" remarks.

    PM Lee Hsien Loong:
    1) Shamelessly leading his party, PAP, in an election where nearly half the electorate had been denied their voting rights.
    2) And even more shamelessly declaring himself having a mandate of 66.6% of the people when only 34.66% of all eligible voters voted for PAP.
    3) Now infamous for his speech for "fixing the oppositions" and "Mee Siam Mai Hum".
    4) Wasting tax payers money for failing to take leave from his official duties when he turned up as a witness in a personal defamation suit against Chee Soon Juan.

    DPM Wong Kan Seng:
    1) Several blunders exposed during 2008 alone. God knows how many more had went unnoticed in past years.
    2) Demanding Singaporeans to be held responsible to standards that he himself was incapable of. Perfect example of this being employers of non-limping runaway maids needing to pay penalty after 4 months while Wong Kan Seng himself refuses to take any responsibility after failing to return a limping "alleged" terrorist after more than 5 months to date.

    Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam:
    1) Shamelessly supporting his own pay increases while condemning pay increases for the rest of the citizens.

    "Walkover" MPs:
    1) Credible people will never claim that they represent anyone without the person explicitly endorsing it. These walkover MPs were never voted in by anybody but shamelessly proclaim that they represent the citizens in their wards. These are opportunists, not representatives.

(This list is by no mean exhaustive, just something straight off my drowsy brain.)

This is what PAP are afraid of.
No need 30%, one voted strong candidate (Mr JBJ) in parliament LKY cannot tahan already.

To dream of having only 30% is a waste. PAP should not hold as government because they are clearly corrupted!! Corrupted especially in their brains!! GOD DAMN PAP!!

  • someone sad - NTUC is a joke.
Look! S$1.5Mil of subsidies given out to the poor!

    http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20080720/tap-553-s-1-5m-worth-food-vouchers-help-231650b.html

Wow, as if NTUC is the poor peoples' grand saviour! This is a big joke.

Singapore has what. 4 million people?

Assuming that these vouchers are for the poorest of the poor, which is probably going to be about 500,000 of the 4 mil population we have on estimate. There would probably be more poor people out there in my opinion.

ok, assuming these 500,000 people live in families of 5.

    so its S$1.5mil / 100,000 families = $15 per family.

What the f*** can a family buy for $15 nowadays? Rice? That wouldn't even last a year for a family of 5. I think I'm spending about S$15 a week on my EZLink fares alone, my dear friend.

I hate it when the news puts up news like that, as if $1.5mil is a very great help to the poor. That amount is not even the president's salary for god's sake. On this note, can you imagine how much are those clowns earning?

Blardy stingy assholes we have up there. Afterall, its ALL our Ah Gongs who built Singapore, not ang mohs or your favourite dragon lady from commu land, where most of our jobs are going to now.

Now wake me up if NTUC is going to give a billion out to the poor, if it is ever going to happen. That is real help, and what the poor needs, and they need it now. NOW NOW NOW!

    Well said.

What is the use of approaching sorry excuse for an MPfor any sort of assistance as most were not even voted in by the people from the many walk over constituencies.

In fact, LKY have use this GRC concept as a recruitment and training ground for his party - PAP. The are selected, place in wasrds that are sure to win and tested for their political quotient as MPs.

The best part of all this for LKY is that he gets to recruit and test his newly minted PAP cadres/MPs at tax payers money.

  • Low Fuk Yew - Losing power means death !
"N" level students will tell you that old Yew is indirectly trying to upset votes in favor of the alternative parties.

Old Yew is already 84, tell me , how long more he can go on ?

Can you imagine if PAP is deposed by next GE and how would the old man feel if he is still alive, with DR Chee vetting through the books concerning country's reserves and GIC......??

This is the ACTUAL reason why at his age, he is still coming out like a PM, smearing at alternative parties like no tomorrow.

Please also remember that LKY wishes to die a hero and not a coward.
He will at all costs try to inflict heavy damage on the alternative parties before the next GE, and before he goes up the hearse.

If all else fails whether he is alive or dead, i strongly believe he must have plans to sabotage sinkapore's finance if PAP is kicked out.
Being a hardcore hypocrite, will die a hypocrite either.

This is genuine Hakka man talking.

I just wanted to let you, those who are below the age of 45, know about the SIN committed by LKY against Hakka people and his ancestors.

In late 60's, early 70's. Lee forcibly took away our high valued cemetry known as 丰永达at Holland Road (near the new Methodist girl school). The excuse that he used was to convert this land into a Container Port. Haha, container port in Holland Road bungalow area.

This was non-sense. I was told that the Clan went to plead with him to no avail.

Clan people said that he wanted to show to non-Hakka people how firm he was against his own Hakka people. Since then, we Hakka people had, unofficially, expelled him from the Clan.

Now, forty years later, the land still remained unused or used by people to fly kites or remote control aeroplanes.

For those who doubt my story, just go and speak to any Hakka men of the age of 60 and above or take a drive along Holland Road Bungalow area.

Don't u guys called that man Hakka... Pui...
I wonder how many SDP party members are good credible candidates - not polytechnic/ITE or below education but people with good degrees and holding major portfolios in banks, finance company, senior lawyers, academics (besides chee sj who was fired), doctors? Can SDP tell us How many ?

    Anoymous [sic],
    I feel your are elitist.
Are you talking about cadidates with credibility .... or candidates with good education ?
Good education does not equate to good cridibility.

Neither does holding portfolios in banks, etc ....

There are even people holding both good degrees and good positions but whose credibility are questionable.

    Dear Singapore Democratician,
I am particular digusted by your action although i am not in all favour of what the PAP does. But what disgusted me most is,you guys bring politics down to the level of Kopitiam. Your action have really proven what LKY said, I hope that you can brace yourself and prove something and stop gaining votes by defaming, make small of others and your propaganda.

    Thanks
  • Chew - Perception of Credibility?
I wonder how many SDP party members are good credible candidates - not polytechnic/ITE or below education but people with good degrees and holding major portfolios in banks, finance company, senior lawyers, academics (besides chee sj who was fired), doctors? SO THAT we can see how SDP has gone from strength to strength, built on real solid foundation
You had defined good and credible as someone having good degrees and holding major portfolios in banks, finance company, senior lawyers, academics or doctors.

Now tell me, do you meet the above criteria you had set yourself? No, then by your own standard you are not good and credible. Does your parents meet the above criteria? No? Then they are not good or credible either.

If judged by your perceived standards of credibility, many people in Singapore would had been consider bad and not credible. Then why are banks still willing to lend them money, financing their homes, or do you mean that Singapore banks are not banks but charities? Just like Singapore's meritocracy appears to be mere hypocrisy?

    Please wake up.

The only qualification any Singaporean needs is being a Singapore citizen and the determination to improve the lives of the people. Flashy degrees, selfish souls and greedy hearts are the source of bad self-serving policies that serve no real purpose and bleeds the people dry. Think "GST is to help the poor (ministers)" and "ERP will reduce congestion (for the rich and elites)" as well as "Get out of my elite uncaring face" attitude that PAP had shown everyone.

The people of Singapore need someone who speaks out for them from the heart and in their language. And that has nothing to do with good degrees or impressive portfolios.
  • Anonymous - Credibility what!
First of all what this fuss about credible opposition! Credibility in terms of what, educational qualification! Previous work experience! Commitment to the country! Commitment towards the people!

This whole topic of having credible shadow team makes me laugh until burst. Talking about having shadow cabinet of parliamentary democracy like UK! UK is a matured functioning democracy over hundred years and Singapore it’s barely a Single Party System! Singapore needs to have proper institutions like vibrant media (not state controlled), independent bureaucratic, technocratic structures in place for various government institutions, which will support the politicians, understand the concept, politicians not necessarily have to be bureaucrats. Politicians should understand people, policy implementations to be done by government officers who would not change with the change in government. If the government is so proud of their talented ministers, (well somehow they get sky touching pay packs) are they able enough to work in the corporate world! Look around the top financial, technology based multi national organisations in Singapore, how many of local talents work in top level! How many of Singaporeans even in terms of numbers in the financial organisations where Singapore government invests heavily (Merrill, Citi, UBS). Rarely, Singaporeans are there anywhere above middle management. So take foreign talents as ministers that would be the best meritorious government anybody could ever imagine!

    Dear Please Stand Up,

Those actions were precisely what the PAP had done so far to the opposition through Straits Times all these years, and I think CSJ got the most shit from the old man. if you are still standing up reading this.

Please wake up! Don't fall into the PAP brainwashing territory by reading THEIR OWN NEWSPAPERS! Cannot be trusted at all!

  • CHUA CHUAN SEAH - The Supreme and Great Leader
Why are there so many frequent and critical remarks--couched in words of sarcasm, resentment, derogatoriness and hostility--against the PAP Government and its leaders (especially Lee Kuan Yew) by a growing number of Singaporeans in their usually hasty and impulsive comments on articles and reports in this website?

Isn't Lee Kuan Yew a leader with great social and emotional intelligence--to use a concept taken from modern psychologists? Isn't he well-endowed in this respect--for his ability to make and win friends from all classes of society--without racial, religious, linguistic and cultural distinctions-- and from all kinds of national leaders from all over the world? So if he is so friendly, if he has so high a social and emotional intelligence, then why has he failed to win friends from those who support the opposition?

Is it just a question of ideological differences then--an intellectual gap that cannot simply be overcome or closed by sheer friendliness? Poor Lee, why do so many people dislike and detest him so vehemently? What has he done to our citizens, this great and honourable man? Not only is he an able leader, but he is also GOOD! Yes, he wants all his chosen leaders to be good--so that they can form a good government! After all, did he not say, in his book, "From Third World To First", in the chapter on "Passing the Baton" (pp. 736-7), that "Leadership is more than just ability. It is a combination of courage, determination, commitment, character and ability that makes people willing to follow a leader. We needed people who were activists with good judgement and interpersonal skills."

Ah, "interpersonal skills" indeed, sir! If you have such wonderful and great "interpersonal skills", then how come you have made so many enemies among your own citizens--not to mention those liberal bastards and welfare-championing and freedom-championing scums from the West?

Yes, and I want to ask this question: Are we paying your "good and able" leaders (for goodness and ability are the two indispensable qualities which you desired from your chosen leaders) such an unacceptably high salary for their "goodness" or for their debatable "ability"--or for both?

But surely, it can't be for both! After all, goodness requires no monetary incentives: If you are really "good", then why do you want so much money for yourself? Are you not serving the people rather than your own self-interests?

Therefore, it must be for your "ability"! Yes, we are paying you such an enormously high salary because you are such an able leader--so much so that you can let a detained Muslim extremist (declared a very dangerous man by the government) run away and escape from the prison authorities!

But is this only one example of your "ability"? There are many more, but I just can't put them down in this posting--for fear of embarassing and humiliating you further! Yes, unlike you, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, I am a compassionate man. I don't like to cause unnecessary sufferings--emotional or social--to other people. Especially one who is so highly distinguished as you undeniably are--with your great intellectual brilliance, and not to mention your courage, determination, commitment, character, good judgemental skills, and, above all, terrific interpersonal skills! I salute you, my Supreme and Great Leader!
  • Elfred - SDP got credible people?
Not trying to attack, but face it... Does SDP have people ready to govern properly or not if really elected?

Governing is not like you see Mr X buay song, and you go scold, go protest, go march... or you think that chap not your gang so must be enemy.

Naturally, what credible reasons have SDP offered for ousting credible opposition boss Chiam? Or do you have credible response to this error?

Life is getting harder, but that doesn't mean it is getting easier to choose SDP.

Many people tok about what human rights... What human rights are they preaching? Who really understand that human rights requires thinking people with greater virtue!

    How?
  • jason - Are U Fit>?
From the moments u went on a hunger strike I was startled who is this man.But to my very surprised,it was a man with an issuse of being sacked from work, unfairly. My god, why use the hunger-strike unless u are a man of great contribution to a society but not so. The worst to come is u become an opposition, not a very good one I say. From my view you are the worst of all opposition parties, u dare this and that does amount u an out-standing politician. A good politician put fore his ideal with pro and con for the people to decide. What u are doing is v naive, make your move without being charges can u? If U become the ruling Party I can't imaging what Singapore will be.
