Singapore Democrats

Stanford University's Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) has written to the Minister for Law K Shanmugam to ask him to allow Ms Chee Siok Chin to attend its Summer Fellows Program.

The Official Assignee rejected Ms Chee's application to travel to the US because she is a bankrupt.

In a letter to the Minister (below), Dr Michael McFaul, Director of the CDDRL, informed Mr Shanmugam that Stanford has invited Ms Chee to give a public lecture for which she would be paid an honorarium of US$2,000. This would allow the SDP leader to pay her creditor which is the Singapore Government.

The OA has yet to respond.

Stanford University CDDRL's letter to Singapore's Minister for Law:

CENTER ON DEMOCRACY, DEVELOPMENT, AND THE RULE OF LAW
Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, 616 Serra Street, Stanford, CA 94305-6055

July 22, 2008

The Honorable Mr K Shanmugam
Minister for Law
Republic of Singapore
100 High Street #08-02
The Treasury

via Fax and Email

URGENT

Dear Mr Minister:

We are writing about the decision of your government to deny Ms Chee Siok Chin permission to travel to Stanford to participate in the annual Summer Fellows Program of our Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law.

We feel this decision is wrong and unfair, in that it infringes on her freedom of movement and denies Ms Chee—who was selected through an extremely competitive process that chose 27 applicants from a pool of over 500—the opportunity to enhance her knowledge and skills in ways that will benefit Singapore and also improve her professional capacity, including her ability to earn income in the future.

We understand that her request to travel was denied because it will bring no benefit to her bankruptcy estate and to her creditors. We would like to call your urgent attention to a new development that renders this assessment out of date.

Ms. Chee has been invited to give a public lecture here at Stanford University, during her stay as a Summer Fellow, with an honorarium of US$2,000. (Please see the attached letter of invitation).

Since all of her expenses as a summer fellow will be covered separately, we would assume that her honorarium earnings could be used to help meet her obligations to her creditors upon her return, benefiting all concerned.

Given this new material development in her case, and given the warm relations of cooperation that Stanford has been developing with Singapore, which we hope will continue and grow, we respectfully request that you review her request on an urgent basis and grant her permission to attend the CDDRL Summer Fellows Program.

The program begins on Monday, July 28, but we would accept her as soon as she can arrive at Stanford.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Michael McFaul
Director, CDDRL

Let's be gracious and grant Ms Chee the opportunity to earn some money to repay her creditors. If TT Durai can go and work in Dubai, then come back and serve his sentence, there is no reason whatsoever in Ms Chee's case as it is not even a criminal case.

This "new development" will test the sincerity of the OA (and the government he acts on behalf of?)at his reason for denying Miss Chee permission to attend, which is that her attending would not benefit her creditors (although it should be wondered why this should be a necessary condition for granting the permit).

The minister might ignore Standford's appeal, or cite another reason to uphold the denial of permission. Both ways, the sincerity of government is placed in doubt.

It seems, therefore, that the only honourable response is to grant the permission, (unless it is intended again to sidetrack from the issue and cast aspersions as to some "conspiracy to do us in").

I hope the PAP government realize by rejecting CSC's trip, it only breeds more dissent and discontent. It's a lose-lose situation for everyone.

PAP, let's be gracious for once.

Can't wait to see what our 3 million dollar ministers & their able admin officers can come up with this time.

Don't disappoint us. Show us you are worth 3 million by giving us a reason that none of us would be capable of conceiving.

it's not the money they atr worried about but what she might say in her lecture.
  • Chew - Interesting
This is an interesting new development. I hope the government can stop being a pain in the ar*e for a change. Or are there really no decent men or women in PAP at all?

    Ms Chee, go for it!
  • g_e - Gotcha!
The Ministry responded thus: "We regret to inform you that the decision to reject your travel application remains. The OA is not persuaded that your attendance at the fellowship program in Stanford University would result is any substantial additional benefit to your creditors."
Hahaha, I love it - good ol' Stanford politely sticks a stiletto right between the shoulder blades of the OA! This new development has now thrown the cat amongst the government pigeons. What an absolutely delicious dilemma for the spiteful pointy-heads to have to face.

The only lame excuse they relied upon to deny CSC's attendance was that it made no material contribution to her creditors. Now it turns out she will pocket US$2000 to contribute to their lust for a pound-of-flesh.

How to reverse gear gracefully now? What plausible but false new excuse to attempt in order not to lose too much face?

ROFLMAO! I can hardly wait to see what our genius scholars come up with. Perhaps they'll say her hairstyle and clothing aren't up to S'pore's world class standards? Or maybe Mike, this site's resident PAP apologist, can come up with a few pointers?

Only if the self-appointed local GOD is feeling gracious I guess.

When the basic human needs such as food and roof over the head, are met, it's only natural for human being to elevate to the next level of need, i.e. to be free. Freedom of speech, freedom of movement, freedom to pursue happiness, etc. If the government can't see that, what good are they? By denying Ms Chee freedom of movement, it shows that PAP is outdated and does not read the pulse of Singaporeans correctly. Going or not to Stanford, Ms Chee case will be the talk of the town at the conference. I think PAP has miscalculated if its plan was to keep Singapore undemocratic political scene unnoticed.

The ruling party should mend its image by letting Ms Chee to attend the seminar, by doing so it also helps the Government to gain more public respect, what Singapore needs today is a more caring and humble society in order for all in the world to respect its citizen
  • Max Chew - If convivted felon TT Durai can, why not CSC ?
The first posting is dead-on.....if convicted felon TT Durai was allowed to travel overseas to take a job for several months pending his appeal after conviction. why can't CSC be allowed to travel to Stanford Univ for just a week or two? She is not even a convicted felon but just a simple bankrupt (debt

Not only the citizens don't have freedom of speech,we don't have freedom of movement also. This Shan can't make decision,he has to consult the immortal old man.Looks like what reason the old man want to give now. They are money face, now give them US$2000,now no more excuse.Imagine Ms Chee giving lectures to US people, LKY, your blood will boil, you will get heart attack.I think, they will give another excuse by asking US don't interfere with our domestic politics.Pui, Chow xyz@@@??? Nia mah,TOC ban me from scolding bad words, but not SDP.TT Durai can earn $25000 per month in Dubai,to pay debt, because, he is loved by Ho Ching and peanut Goh.Durai is pap man!!
  • mike Chan - Please be more humane and magnanimous...
I am addressing this comment to MM Lee Kuan Yew and PM Lee Hsien Loong both of whom I have admired and respected over many years.
Please be kind-hearted and magnanimous towards the Chees esp the sister Chee Siok Chin. She has already been punished with the indignity and hardship of her 10days incarceration for "contempt" of court last month. Please forgive and forget and let her be. She is after all going to a well-known U ..Stanford Univ and getting involved in a respectable forum and seminar where other developed nations are also involved. The subject is Democracy and the Rule of law, 2 values I'm sure the PAP adhere to and support. Thank you and may God bless both of you and your families.

    Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your letter of 22 July 08.

We have lined up some court hearings for Ms Chee, which unfortunately coincide with the timing of your programme.

Mindful of your gracious invitation to Ms Chee, we have bent backforward, sideward and try to fix our court dates outside your programme in Standord. Unfortunately, the rest of the hearing dates have all been taken up.

Please do not try to change your programme dates to accomodate Ms Chee. If you did so, we will also try to change our hearing to coincides your fresh dates again and will express our deep regrets over such unfortunate coincidence.

    Yours sincerely,
    Samugam

They will, of course, say that the OA has acted by his own discretion, and that there has been no interference in the judicial process.

But we all know the sort of mentality of our people in positions of authority. We have not been brought up to be a great people. They don't have to be instructed.

They will independently go out of their way to read the "leaders"'s minds, and do what is "political right"(very familiar term, isn't it?): for the nation? never! to protect their own rice bowls!

Double standards due to her being on the opposition. No surprise that PAP wouldn't let her go... more like it was expected.

Best of the best counter reply!

Let's see how Lee tekan Shan to make another excuse! Hope he'll be dumbfounded to reply! Ignoring to reply CDDRL will also show that PAP is not as intelligent as they claim. They better have to agree to allow Miss Chee to attend. May God Bless You, Miss Chee Siok Chin. You are getting one of the best support among your best supporters - this saga shows.

    Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your letter of 22 July 08.

We noted your offer of honorarium of US$2,000 to Ms Chee for her attendance of your Summer Fellows Program on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law.

However, we have just received notice from the Singapore Government that they are prepared to offer a sum of USD 2001 for her to give a lecture to some unspecified Government officials on a topic that will be determined upon shortly.

In view of the fact that Ms Chee has an obligation to fulfill towards her creditors, I regret to inform you that Ms Chee shall not be able to attend your program but instead she shall have to work on the project that pays better.

The OA should give due consideration to the new development" and urgently. Perhaps the OA will be "persuaded" by the new development.
  • Mikee - Mc-Foul
Michael McFaul is trying to do Singapore in. This is evidently so from his letter to our Law Minister. Perhaps, he does not know his place in the world. Our minister is more than any ministers in the G8 countries. In fact, if the pick a minister from each of the G8 country and add up their annual compensation, it is probably less than our Law Minister.

Michael and Stanford just do not know their place in the new world order. We can effort to lose billions in a short time in the stock market, we can do Stanford in. This is nothing.

Singapore shall setup a Stamford University to stand, stamp, and stomp on Stanford U.

Stamford to crush Stanford!! Long live the PAP.

Talk and nothing can be done

    By CSC and foreigners.

CSC even need help from foreigners

How can she help Singapore at all??
