Singapore Democrats

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one writes a library.

It tells the story of the political elite glorifying themselves in ever larger-than-life images while they see not the toil of little Singaporeans.

The National Day billboard, placed strategically at the busiest junctions in Toa Payoh, symbolises all that is decadent about Singapore. While Mr Wong Kan Seng and colleagues live lives cocooned in their own opulent world, ordinary Singaporeans grind out an existence devoid of hope and security.

Yet, in cruel mockery, these rulers beckon tired and desperate souls to join them in “celebrating the Singapore Spirit.”

The story is always about them, never the people. The PAP takes front and centre in everything Singaporean with the lumpen masses, to use the words of our Minister Mentor, filling up the backdrop.

Notice how on the billboard ordinary folks are packed into the little corner on the bottom left while Mr Wong and colleagues beam in resplendent colour. In fact, the poor guy with the beard just about manages to squeeze into the picture (photo, below left).

Meanwhile in the faded, little corner...Notice also how the colour for these people is faded. But of course. We can't have them stand out and draw attention away from their rulers, can we? And just to be doubly sure, the pictures of the MPs are placed in front of the backdrop so that their images standout even more (see photo, bottom right).

How much more of the people's money (yes, including that of the bedraggled man pushing the cart) was spent in this vanity campaign?

Happy National Day? Thanks, but no thanks. We're not in the mood. Not when the occasion is hijacked by the few in the ruling party.

Tellingly, Singaporeans are not bothered to fly the national flag. The few flags that are see fluttering are, more often than not, put up by Residents Committee members.

What sort of nation have we become when our youths have no loyalty and our talented are leaving by the thousands?

Propping them upYes, the system has grown rich. But whom has that wealth benefited? Our elderly cannot retire, a 15-year-old boy commits suicide after the police stops him from begging, a man, out of financial desperation, jumps in front of an oncoming MRT train, and a mother is forced to live with her daughter on the void-deck because she cannot afford HDB's rent.

In the meantime Mr Wong Kan Seng rakes in $10,000 a day as salary. This amount is, of course, independent of portfolio foul-ups.

And how have our riches come about? We let in foreign “talent” that fill the lorongs of Geylang (and are creeping into the housing estates), we make our banking laws so secret that we've become a money-laundering hub, we open our doors to notorious dictators for shopping and medical treatment, and we build casinos to attract yet more cash, clean or otherwise.

This is a Government that has lost its moral compass. It is a Government that has betrayed the people of Singapore. Singaporeans fought for an independent and free nation. What we've ended up with is a money-laundering, vice-promoting political joke.

Singaporeans, let us stop the rot.

Let us not continue to look the other way for our children will inherit our negligence.

Let us accept our duty and responsibility as citizens of this country.

Let us do something meaningful this National Day.

Shake off your apathy and fear. Do something. Do anything. Just don't look away any longer.

We will be at Toa Payoh Central on August 9 for a walkabout and to distribute Tak Boleh Tahan! flyers. It's the perfect opportunity for you to do something for our society. Won't you join us? We'll keep a TBT t-shirt for you.

Happy National Day? Yes, one day in the not-too-distant future we will celebrate. In the meantime soldier on with us. There is a battle to be won.

Date: National Day, Saturday
Time: 12 noon - 3 pm
Place: Toa Payoh Central, Blk 190 (outside the KFC restaurant)
Activity: Distributing flyers and walkabout
Dress: Tak Boleh Tahan! t-shirt

  • C J - There's Shit, under the Icings
Without SDP's pointing out these self-glorifying banners & larger than life pictorials of these so called 'rulers', 'leader', my stomach churns everytime I pass and see one glaring brightly along busy roads & byways. Their plastic smiles & cliched portraiture poses only served to further infuriate me DEEPLY.

SO, every National Day, I always avert my eyes away from such self-gratifying visual displays in public places and along roads. I don't want to see any of them. Apart from infuriating me, they may even kill me by agravating my gastritis!

I have one phrase for this National Day 2008: ".... ooooohhh.. I HATE THEM! Please go and die!"

Happy PAP Day, to Mike, Victor and clones/clowns.
  • Michael Chan - Dearth of national flags everywhere!
Yes indeed. This afternoon at abt 3pm I took a bus all the way from AMK thru Bishan thru Serangoon central through Hougang South and finally thru the whole stretch of Pasir Ris HDB estate b4 reaching T3 of Changi Airport where I had tea with a friend. It's very true...it's worst than last year.Practically for every HDB block I past by, I could count the no of flags on the fingers of one hand. Many blks did not even have 1 solitary flag.
The few blks that have >10 flags were invariably blks that housed the RC or CCC offices.
Sadly I think that S'poreans are not in any mood to celebrate the NDay this year due to the high inflation making it difficult to make ends meet.
Furthermore, the PAP Ministers just increased their salaries upwards the 3rd time in feb2008 making a total of 24% increase. (eg WKS's salary jacked up from $180,000 pm to $225,000 pm now. This notwithstanding his comedy of errors at the WRDC where MSK chabotted, the courts where 2 prisoners almost escaped and the Budget Terminal where an uncle was able to fly off using his nephew's pport)
And what did they give the rest of S'poreans to ease their conscience? Crumbs in the form of workfare payouts (Abt $225 every 3 mths but ending in Oct08).
How long more will the people tolerate the GREED and cruelty of the PAP Govt causing this widening gap betw them and us? Let us hope the next GE will come in 2010 or even earlier. We will show them what people-power is all about as did our neighbour upnorth on 8Mar08.
  • Low Fuk Seng - How much this hoarding worth ??
During National day celebrations, you people will see these unsightly billboards along the roadside displaying the Baboons and Monkeys.

Does National day links to these animals ??? Is sinkapore in the mood of election's hustings?

One such hoarding with floodlights(300 watts)would easily costs thousands of dollars depending the colors and materials used.

From designing to erectting the hoarding, the job is usually undertaken by signcraft company or Adverstising companies. Cost will be even higher if they use Ad companies becos Ad company must sublet the task.

I think it is the CCC or RC people who get these things done.

I hope some signcraft company or ad companies would illuminate the sinkaporeans how and where their invoices are sent to in order to get their payment.

These Hoardings seem very personal as it depicts PAP candidates, how are they link to the national day?

is good to know who pay for these hoardings around the island.
  • Tan Tai Wei
It's, once again, electioneering for the ruling party, while their "rule of law" rules this out for other parties until some 10 days before polling day!

And who paid for such election posters? The town councils, using tax payers' money allocated for GRCs' managing?

And then, where we will, again, clench our fists against our hearts to vow to build a society "based on justice and equality", they, and only they, will appear, live this time, marching past holding a hundred PAP banners (not the national flag) before the entire nation, TV and otherwise, effectively carrying on the electioneering.

You Hypocrite do not think that you will escape the judgement from God.

    Luke 16: 19 to 25

19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,

21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

    22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

There is a Chinese Saying, 'Wicked things people do on Earth, God in Heaven will see'.
My interpretation is not so good. Can someone give me a better one?
  • Tan Tai Wei
    Simon,

their answer to that parable has been that that beggar outside the gate would not have fallen crumbs from the rich man's table to pick had that rich man not been so rich.

So, make him even richer, so that bigger crumbs will fall.

  • JBJ's interview with Malaysia' - the atrocities of PAP and Lee Regime

Being in the opposition in Singapore all these years has cost you dearly and you even had to sell off your properties. Any regrets?

I did not have many properties but I had to sell a bungalow in a very fashionable area in Singapore to pay the judgement obtained by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew. Having sold that, three years later I bought a small apartment, and then I had to sell that too. All in, I had easily about 12 to 13 suits to pay off. Some people say I was a fool. All I can say is I do not regret it because, to me, life is not all about making money and acquiring wealth. Life is doing something for the people around you.[/quote]

You were prohibited from active politics between 2001 and last year due to a defamation suit against you. How was it for you during this period?

I was angry, I suppose. The reason was obvious, as the reason for commencing bankruptcy procedures against me was to take me out of Parliament. I tried to resist but I did not succeed. As a bankrupt I was not allowed to leave the country without getting permission from the official assignee. Even to come to Johor Baru over the weekends, I had to make an application. So there was a complete restriction on my travel. Apart from that, there were all the other little things, like you cannot have a bank account when you are a bankrupt. I was not even allowed to assist other candidates in the elections. They said I was not to go anywhere near an election rally. I was not allowed to go and speak. I was not to go and even assist any candidate because they said that was election activity and as a bankrupt I cannot do that.

Are you not tired of being in politics since you started in 1971 with the Workers Party (WP)?

It is just my conviction that when things are wrong, and if there is anything I can do to put them right, then I should do that. I think every citizen should feel like that. It is a citizen's duty.

At least that poor old man still can collect cartons! Poverty in Singapore is nothing as compared to the other cities in Asia. Living in the filthy streets, children begging on the streets.

Natas collected $40million from 60,000 visitors, PC Shows another $100million. Singapore is the only country in the world who has these shows/fairs at such a frequency. Singaporeans are so poor? You guys are frogs in a well.
  • Michael - Lost our loyalty
In other countries, a national holoday is STRICTLY a national holiday. It is AGAINST the law to go to work on that day.

Yet just because our National Day falls on a Sat instead of a Sun, companies are given discretion on whether the want to give their worker off, but no compulsion to do so.

HELLOOOOOO, THIS IS NATIONAL DAY, even then the govt cannot declare day off.

    Where is loyalty going?

Are we giving it away to foreign workerholics?

    Total Shame.

Dear Dr Chee, although sometime i don't quite agreed with some of the things your party did, but I certainly agreed with you that our government need a wake up call.

I salute you for your bravery to take on the government, as for me, I have "escape" to another country.

Happy national day to you and hope one of these day you will be able to change the system
  • Foreigner PR - Blame it on PAP!
Blame 1: Minister draws high salary while countrymen are poor. Why? Blame it on PAP.

Of late, this SDP forum seems to only criticize all actions of the PAP government which don't seem so appealing to them or for the common man for the short run. I totally agree that there are some issues with PAP like no transparency in their operations, ministers drawing high salary etc BUT the positive aspects can also not be ignored. I appreciate that SDP, as a good opposition, keeps the public informed of the not-so-right doings of PAP but then I fail to see how the opposition would have tackled the issues if it was in PAP's position. I bet it would also have done the same thing. There is no country in the world without problems like hunger and poverty so the blame that some people are below the poverty line because of the government portrays a mindless attitude of the opposition.

Blame 2: Foreigners take away all jobs. Why? Blame it on PAP.

Then we talk about foreigners taking jobs of Singaporeans and blame it on PAP. So, I believe the SDP, if it comes to power, will eliminate all foreigners from Singapore and give jobs to Singaporeans. And how many corporations would like to remain in Singapore then? How much tourism money will Singapore make then? Every country has brain drain and a particular government cannot be blamed for it. You talk about Singaporeans leaving for other countries as they have good prospects there. You never see that other foreigners have also left their country to come and work in your country. It doesn’t mean that they hate their country. Infact, most help their own countries economy by sending back resources.

Blame 3: Temasek invests in Merrill. Chartered Semiconductor suffers loss. Why? Blame it on PAP.

You only talk about ventures which are in loss. It is never considered how and what the world economy is doing and why the government would take such an action. People have to bear with the economic downturn. SDP should stop acting in a way which portrays the impression that if it were in PAP’s place everything would be right and calm.

Blame 4: Everything is about money in Singapore. Why? Blame it on PAP

While I can point out indefinite instances in this article which show that the SDP has the same attitude as of the PAP, here are a few for you to ponder about:

“It's the perfect opportunity for you to do something for our society. Won't you join us? We'll keep a TBT t-shirt for you.” – Whats that! A t-shirt if I join. Voila!

“If a picture is worth a thousand words, this one writes a library.” – If the SDP comes to power tomorrow, this man would be sucking on a pinacolada in his penthouse. Sure this guy is lucky and will vote for SDP.

“Notice how on the billboard ordinary folks are packed into the little corner on the bottom left while Mr Wong and colleagues beam in resplendent colour.” – Now that’s what I call digging too much into the picture. But be careful, if you dig deep and fall in it, people are there to throw mud from the top.

“How much more of the people's money (yes, including that of the bedraggled man pushing the cart) was spent in this vanity campaign?” – Now that you’ve mentioned money, again!, just out of curiosity, how much money was spent for the TBT t-shirts and whose money was that? I know some of you are going to shoot back on this one but see the cost Vs number of people affected.

“a 15-year-old boy commits suicide after the police stops him from begging, a man, out of financial desperation, jumps in front of an oncoming MRT train” – Come on! What is the SDP trying to say? Is this even relevant here! Oh yes, I think, because its all because of the PAP.

“we build casinos to attract yet more cash” – Here’s some food for thought. If the SDP comes to power, it wont need any external cash. In a country without any natural resource, SDP would not need cash. And yet again, it will lower ERP and all taxes, lower HDB prices, help the poor man monetarily. Can anyone tell me from where will all the ‘cash’ for this come?

In the past SDP has written some good articles about the Stanford University issue and court proceedings, but this one, I felt, has lowered my opinion of the SDP. You can surely do better than this.

    Hi Foreigner PR,

I think you've been mistaken on point 2.

In no way did SDP say that they'd eliminate all foreigners from Singapore. That's too extreme even for PAP standards.

I believe SDP had suggested better benefits for citizens over their foreign counterparts.

Its very dangerous to suggest that a political party endorses an action that they haven't.
  • Tan Tai Wei
Of course, JBJ should have no regrets.

He has lived, and emerged as a personality all his own, and thereby made our political history different because he dared and sacrificed.

Think of those few others, who began being themselves, then got submerged into the shadow of LKY and the PAP, safe and enriched no doubt, but identified and lubricated, and today forgotten, losing the distinctive personhood they might have continued to build themselves into.

I have in mind persons like Tommy Koh and Chan Heng Chee, and, also, all those younger ones who followed, tempted by tea parties and instant fame and money, to give of themselves and their abilities only to play second fiddle.

So, Tommy Koh was reduced to the level where he could only "ask to see Toh Soh Lan", his former law student, and others, when they were taken in by ISD (and complained of being "slapped", etc), rather than mount signifant objections of the sort he was previously wont to as leader of the university socialist club.

And do such persons realize that by supporting the establishment, they have supported also, and thereby implicated in, such measures as the hanging of those many who were caught with only that amount of a drug with them, the brutal whippings of such unfortunate beings as foreign overstayers and those caught scratching cars and charged with vandalism, the overreaction to, and bringing the letter rather than the spirit of the law, to bear upon those few and harmless political dissidents, such as SDP, etc., etc.?

Could it be for such reasons that the bible Christian, Dhanabalan, felt constrained to resign at the height of his political career?

Congratulations, Jeya! "He who saves his life will lose it; only he who is prepared to lose it will save it"!

Firstly, I don't see how it is not a wonder for me to say what is expected because apparently people in this city are fearful. Secondly, it is absolutely not necessary for someone to be a citizen of the country to understand its 'national policies'. Thirdly, if you say that a ForeignerPR has no understanding about your country how would you think that you have an understanding of the 'PR perspective'. i suppose in chee's eyes, the ONLY way to manifest our love for the nation is to put up our flags? then im sure americans having all sort of products with the american flags on it are the world's most patriotic bunch? similarly, im sure having american flags underwears, sunglasses, tshirts are all expression of love for the country? in my opinion, it has become popularized and commercialized. but of course, u lunatics will argue it is but one of the many means to express our patriotism. if it is, pls do not simplify matters and reduce the matter of national pride into one merely of whether or not u put up a flag. that'll be insulting to the many of us who loves our spore but are accused of not doing so on that one count of failing to put up our flag.

secondly, sdp ah sdp. what r u then proposing? tt if we have built the world's most cohesive society we'll see flags fluttering around every national day in every block? tell me which country has this as its manifestation of the people's national pride. name me examples. im sure u have none, cause it simply is too simplistic and irrelevant way to measure national pride. you are merely trying to take a swipe at the govt, in any and every way, as long as it undermines their performance and shores up support for yours, though i dun see the correlation, since other opposition parties are way ahead of u pathetic morons anyway.

third, im sure if sdp takes power, EVERY HOUSEHOLD WILL WAVE THE FLAG ENTHUSIASTICALLY EH? wow, i look forward to tt day.

forth, are you blind to the existence of this thing called the national day parade? if u r gonna be so simplistic and talk about national flags being expressions of national love, den i shall mirror your naivety and argue that, given the tonnes of national flag waving tt goes on at the ndp every yr, the spore spirit is still very much alive and high, contrary to the highly cynical society which u tried to portray.

please, do not misrepresent what the majority of us feels. we are proud and happy of the spore we have as it is today - as molded by the PAP, the very party which gave us our independence. where was sdp when we needed leadership? oops. it hasnt even existed! when it did, how did it contribute to our nation's major crises? SARs? AFC 1997? Economic downturn in the 1980s?

how on earth did the sdp play the patriotic role during those trying times when our nation desperately needed leadership? i guess the leaders of the sdp were busy writing books, giving lectures at stanford and oh, taking photos of billboards along the roads and writing a pseudo-literature essay on it, exhausting whatever creativity in them to try to squeeze something, just anything, negative to say about spore and the pap.

you have allowed politics to cross the way of patriotism and this is saddening and unbecoming of any opposition party which primary focus is to build up its credibility, which has gone down the drain due to the antics of its crazy leaders who are out of touch with the majority of sporeans, who have spoken time and again through the ballot that they do not support your brand of "crazy" and "confrontational" politics in our SINGAPORE SOCIETY.

    thanks, but no thanks, sdp.

[quote="The ideas of individual supremacy and the right of free expression, when carried to excess, have not worked. They have made it difficult to keep America society cohesive. Asia can see it is not working.. In America itself, there is widespread crime and violence, old people feel forgotten, families are falling apart. And the media attacks the integrity and character of your leaders with impunity, drags down all those in authority and blames everyone but itself."

Although I agree with MM's view, in some way, I cannot say that I support the actions he has taken so far. Having been living in America for the past decade, I do agree that some Americans place individual rights above everything else. It is sad to see children taking parents to courts over a few thousand dollars loan, or brother sueing brother for causing bodily injury over an argument about the volume on the TV. In these cases, families are definitely falling apart. However, even in today's Singapore, were there not instances when family members turn against family members over a will? If this is the reason our MM is giving to defend his stand for not allowing freedom of speech/press, it is just like a doctor telling a patient suffering from insomnia, "I won't prescribe sleeping pills to help you sleep, because someone just died from an overdose from it".

Anything, if carried to the extreme, is not good. However, I don't think it is a valid enough reason to ban it totally. Instead, we should look at the American society and find out what went wrong and why, and learn from their mistake. I'm sure our MM should have the intelligence to understand that?

I never liked national day since the day I was born

You know national day always have all those NS men doing the parade?

You know foreigners get more and more job compared to us locals every year?

You know that us local guys have to go army?

If those (china, bangladash, thai ...etc) all sort of people come here to fight job with us we still have to defend them and put up with this kind of crappy parade showing that we "love this stupid place that's not even our home but a nest for those foreigners" ?

You know how sad it is for me to always see this stuff happening

Don't want national day already, for god's sake, i hate it.

What is ruining singapore isn't any political party, but it's the people's vote. All these years i've suffered under the government of "you know what"

See, you guys are the ones that use your cruel pair of hands to vote and spoil a lot of singaporeans live just because "You don't care or your too lazy/buzy". Human rule humans and animal rule animals, if you guys can't push yourself to think properly, what can you expect from someone that's ruling over you, they are what you are? I simply think the behaviour of many Singaporeans to be similar to animals, and this must be the punishment from god because we hardly have disasters.

Before you agree calling people that leaves "the losers" look around you and see all those banglas and china people, do they look the least bit like you, talk like you and dress like you? Can you still call this a country?

The answer, of course NOT! But you [Singaporeans] won't realize it now, wait until you've all grown old then you'll find out that nothing goes sailing smooth in [Singapore] here. Then at that time I'll come back from [whichever country I migrate to] to Singapore for a visit...of course i'll be prepared to give you money if i see you begging on the streets, and laugh at your stupidity of course.

I feel like I'm just a slave to do their NS "cheapo underpaid work that nobody would wanna do" for 2 years and until then I gain my "freedom"

PAP KEEP SAYING THAT they give us locals A lot of welfare so we have to do NS and reservice for them? BUT what did we really enjoy......my CHINA classmates in school enjoy the SAME benefits that I GET everyday, all he did to do to pay the "SAME" school fees as me was to sign and agree to work in singapore for "3 years!!"....of course he get normal pay for those work he'll have to do in future of course

WHILE i have to serve cheapo labour for 2 years, can you call this fair? Even if the government pays me money every year it will not offset my time spend in Reservice or NS I tell you....they did this because they already calculated before that making us do this is good for their profit

I never liked a country that abuses it's own citizen to generate profit for them, and "use" them until they collaspe, singapore is such place hence i'm migrating away 100%.

This facts I see here and the facts that I've came to known about myself already APPEARED so real and true... but nobody cares, cause almost every other singaporeans is a loser, they don't care, and if you ask LKY he also don't care, he just take money away from you and laugh at you from the TV screen while you suffer.

GG fools/animals go celebrate your NDP, just wait and see...there will be a time when you will think that NDP is not fun but sad and annoying, the time will come sooner or later for you so no fred ;)

Talk about upholding the rule of law. Do you know how many times that area got raided by police? I hope you get caught there for some illegal activity and get your buttocks whipped like cream in prison.

If you want to disgrace yourself......at least dont disgrace your beloved PAP!!!
  • Thomas - Outrageous salary
Thank you for raising the issue of obscene salaries our ministers draw.

The $10,000 a day is a confirmation of greed and corrupt leaders we have.

By the way, please reduce the size of your photos. The photo NationalDay3.jpg is 3MB in size and takes 5 minutes to load.

Low Fuk Seng - How much this hoarding worth ??

Idiots, be more relistic. Do you think the SDP will come out from their party fund for all these hoardings when they come to power. In any country, the govt of the day will allocate certain amount of money to celebrate their National Day. Again, don't just pick on the govt just for the sake of it. The SDP fellows, are you aware that some "ganaguni" are more loaded? But alas, you will only highlight those that are very fxxxxxx poor. Your website also practises self-censorship mah, isn't it true?
