Singapore Democrats

Dr Chee Soon Juan has written a new book entitled A Nation Cheated and will launch it at the SDP's annual dinner on 31 Aug 08, Sunday. Guests will each receive a complimentary copy of the book.

This is the seventh book written by Dr Chee. The first was Dare To Change: An Alternative Vision for Singapore published 14 years ago. Since then he has written Singapore, My Home Too, To Be Free: Stories from Asia's Struggle Against Oppression, Your Future, My Faith, Our Freedom: A Democratic Blueprint for Singapore, and The Power of Courage: Effecting Change Through Nonviolence.

A lesser known book that the SDP leader has written is not a political one. He co-authored Effective Parenting for the Asian Family with his wife, Dr Huang Chihmei, in 1994. The book was published by Heinemann Asia, a subsidiary of Reed International.

When the book first came out, advertisements were placed in magazines like Young Parents and the authors were scheduled to speak at various book launches and events. Suddenly, however, the ads were pulled and the publisher informed the authors that it would no longer sell the books.

The latest book, A Nation Cheated, describes Singapore's political-economic system and delves into the many tales that have been spun about it. Repeated over the years, these stories have developed into veritable myths, the most popular ones being that the Singapore economy is the freest in the world, that its people are rich and productive but uninterested in politics, that the legal sysem is the envy of the world, and so on.

A Nation Cheated explodes these myths and describes how the authoritarian system put together by Mr Lee Kuan Yew has de-politicised and silenced an entire generation of citizens, breeding a climate of fear and uncertainty. It shows how the PAP Government uses the political culture to ramp up economic gains at the expense of the people.

The book exposes the weakness of such a system, and outlines the dangers that await the city-state. It also relates how Singaporeans can overcome this problem and bring about genuine stability and progress for the country.

So if you want a copy of the book, make your way down to the Hawaiian-themed party on Sunday.

I have been reading your website for a long time. Political freedom is extremely important for the development of a country and to reduce corruption especially the worst corruption: nepotism.

Political freedom also reduces the possibility of cronyism.

I see plenty of both nepotism and cronyism in the self-proclaimed First Class Politics and Clean Politics of Singapore. It is a joke most well read & thinking people would like to laugh straight into the face of these Take Themselves Too Seriously Politicans.

They dare not because of the vindictivness of these Talented & Honest But Rich Politicians.
• Not really
Firstly, you speak for yourself. You do not represent me.

Secondly, if you are not interested in politics, you will not be helping the PAP to sabotage this forum. Believe it or not, you are playing some sort of dirty politics yourself.

Dr Chee, I will get your book most certainly. Please leave me a copy. I cannot wait to read it.
• anon - keep up the good work
Dr Chee,

Keep up the good work.

A nation cheated, but at least 33.3% are not.

The other 66.6%, well, many of them are also not cheated. They probably know what is going on, but made a choice to close their eyes, or sell their soul, or just too weak to make a different choice for themselves and future generation.

You know, I'm an easy-going person. You don't have to leave an intelligent comment, but at least attempt to make some sense, for f***'s sake.
• Jurong Secondary Boy - felt cheated by my teacher
Hi, I am sec 3 this year.

I feel cheated that my history teacher told the whole class that Lee Kuan Yew books are good and we must buy and read them.

Later, I found out that to silence the people, the government actually bans Dr Chee's books in book stores from selling them.

I think all teachers should have a mind of their own and not just follow what their employers (PAP) say.

Dr Chee have written seven books, why not post the first chapter of all the seven books on the site so that we browse through it. AngMoh will surely like to read the Lee democracy of Singapore and the famous Kangaroo court of the world. Reuter, FEER, Economists, and all those that have been sued by Singapore Kangaroo will be curious about the books.
• Keep it up! - Justice prevails
WEll Done Dr Chee!

Just admire your spirits!

LKY must be having sleepless nites thinking how to "get rid out you" when comes another book ! ha!ha!

Sure will get a copy of your book anyhow!

A possible title for a new book would be a "A Nation Terrorized".

In my opinion, most people live and choose the PAP out of fear rather than ignorance. Everyone knows very well about their dirty politics. Yet, we still allow them to manipulate us. We let them "fix" the opposition, change the game rules, control the media, and so on. If you ask my uneducated seventy year old mother if what the PAP did in giving money before election is right, she would tell you that it is corruption. Ask then why she would vote for the PAP, she would tell you that the PAP are monitoring us. If we do not vote in PAP, the government will "fix" us. Look how they have been fixing Potong Pasia and Hougang. So, I would say that most people are living under fear and threats of the PAP rather than being ignorant to what they are doing. What Singaporeans need is courage instead of information. Luckily, this is changing. You will see this at the next election. Dr. Chee, clear your bankrupt, and prepare you rally speeches.

Democracy must be Known by everyone

Just like we got free copies of our RC magazines which tell the PAP story..

Can CSJ give FREE download of his interesting book?

What are the things that Singaporeans are being cheated of...?

Because people are all being cheated, so no money to buy it...

> In my opinion, most people live and choose the PAP out of fear rather than ignorance.

I couldn't agree more. Singaporeans are not dumb, we are ready for a change. I hope that all the oppositions can put their differences aside and contest not half but all the seats. We have suffered in silent long enough.

"Effective Parenting for the Asian Family" See. So it goes to show that raising kids the "Asian" way is NOT in conflict with universal democratic values!

Although I am not a parent yet, I am so tempted to get this book.

• Gabriel G - Availability...
Can the SDP advice on whether all of CSJ's 7 books are available at Kino and Select?

It helps that people go forth and buy the books instead of asking for free downloads... Am hoping more Sec Sch and Tertiary students go read such books. Most of CSJ's titles are available in the National Library Board as well...

Would also hope that someone would post a review of this newest book ASAP after reading.

All the best...

PAP has suck a lot of our money and they can give us free copies of RC magazines, while the SDP did not suck the people money but yet if they can afford, they will give the people free
When I receive the free pap RC magazines, straight away I throw it to the rubbish bin and don’t even give a chance to bring home the PAP RC magazines, because story inside is all rubbish.

• Mike - PDF Downloads
The decision rests on CSJ whether he would want people to read his ideas..

The best way will be PDF download.

After all, how many hardcopies can be sold..?
• MID - monarchy
Well, basically the people are commodities to the PAP. Not that its a bad thing. Afterall, they all want to be used. And we help them by letting them prove their usefulness. =)

Regardless, PAP is winning the next GE. 100%. Just look around and you can see they will vote us in.
• Haha ....
Nice try and well done. I do not know your objective of writing such a message. But if you are a true PAP supporter, you have just screwed up. What you just written will spur on more anti-government sentiments and increase our desire to vote out the PAP by next election. If you are a SDP supporter in disguise, then your message is also effective in spurring our desire to take action to vote out the PAP as soon as possible. In any case, thanks and keep on the good work. Please keep on writing messages like this to keep SDP and people who believe in democracy going.

FROM Monday, Singaporeans can head to the Speakers' Corner not just to air their views but hold public demonstrations too.

Its evolution into a protest park falls on the eighth anniversary of Hong Lim Park being turned into a soapbox for Singaporeans.

Anything goes, almost.

Demonstrators can hold up placards, wave banners, and use hand-held loudhailers so their messages are seen and heard. They can do so round the clock, lifting the current ban on speaking from 7pm to 7am. Loudhailers, however, can be used only from 9am to 10.30pm.

But law and order rules still apply.

This means no lewd or violent visuals. Also barred are race and religious issues.

Permanent residents, viewed as having a stake in Singapore, can also participate. But if they, like foreigners, still have to apply for a permit if they want to speak.

These new rules were released by the Police and National Parks Board on Monday at a press conference, where both agencies assured citizens of less, rather than more regulations and monitoring.

It comes a week after Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke about allowing public demonstrations as a way to open up more space for political expression in his National Day Rally address.

For a start, the management of Speakers' Corner will be taken off the police and handed over to NParks.

It will now deal with the registration of speakers or organisers of demonstrations, who can register online via NPark's website from Saturday.

This is a departure from past practices where speakers had to register at the Kreta Ayer Police Post next to the Park.

There is also no limit on how many groups can demonstrate on any day, as long as everyone can be contained within Speakers' Corner which can hold between 3,000 and 4,000 people.

The Police will also take a hands-off approach. The Police will patrol the Park, like it does in any other areas. But it will investigate if it receives public complaints.

I have a thought here. Like in the US, there is a website called factcheck.org where a nonpartisan, nonprofit, "consumer advocate" for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics. It will be great if we do the same in Singapore.
• V.Benedict - Win the election with disgrace.
a reply to MID

I would like to bring this matter to your attention, PAP won election through unfair and unjust tactics.

Yes sure, they won the election but did not won my HEART.

• Haha ...
Lee Kuan Yew was only a lawyer (and not a very good one) before he was PM. Not that I am prejudiced against the trade, but a lawyer is someone who distort facts for a living.

Goh Chok Tong was a PhD dropout (quitter) who majored in Geography. He was only a civil servant of the lowest form before he involved himself in politics and before becoming PM.

Lee Hsien Loong was Lee Kuan Yew's son before he became PM. He is still Lee Kuan Yew's son.

Chee Soon Juan is political leader who has involved himself and fighting for Singaporeans rights at the grass root level since 1990s. He has seven written books, which most of them are concerned with the health of our national well being.
• Tan Tai Wei
What kind of "nation strong and free" are we, when a publisher could have spent shareholders' money publishing a book, and then waste it all by immediately withdrawing it, out fear of government after realising too late that its author is that particular Chee Soon Juan!

And so to get the likes of Francis Seow's, even JBJ's books, one has to go to Johore!

This fear is hardly a peculiarity of publishers, book shops and the business community. It's all-pervasive (a retired civil servant said the other day that he had to vote the PAP to protect his pension, which was subject to his continued good behaviour!)

Doesn't it defeat all that LKY and the PAP claim to have done for Singapore, when it all adds up to producing this sort of stunted and cowed mentality? Is this sort of survival worthwhile?

A nation is comprised of its nationals. Such cowardliness isn't nationality and citizenship!

A NATION CHEATED..cant wait to get one.
where is the SDP annual dinner held.?
• kongzhi - How Did u Do it?
Dear Dr Chee,

Singapreans are indebted to you for what you have sacrificed for us and the nation. Many people in your situation, would have thrown in the towel and shut up forever...

U, on the contrary, bounced back and can never be defeated.. They bankrupted you, you fought back; they threw you in jail, you fought back stronger...

Despite all the severe adversities.. you and your wife raised three healthy and cheerful kids..

You mananged to do marathon despite all harassment...

You continue to write and write with great wisdom...

My highest respect for your Dr Chee and Mrs Chee too....
• ?? - to Haha
You are missing the point.

The point is that the party's energies should not be spent on an area of campaign (spread ideas via platform of books) which reaches out to so little people.

we want maximum reach, minimum impact.

i know he believes that what he is doing is for martyr-ship and all, to attempt to be the father inspiring a whole generation of rebels and revolts against the pap by immortalizing his ideas into paper.

but sadly, after 7th tries, he should have realized the returns of such investments are low and simply, not worth it. if there has been any increase in sdp's electoral support, it must have been due to other reasons and not via the sale of books, since there is not distinguishable correlation between the % polled in 06 GE with the no. of publications by the party.

and your recount of the professional jobs of the PAP leaders is off the point. despite the several deficiencies you have pointed out about LKY, LHL and GCT, they simply did one thing: do the things that will get one into power, given the context and constraints.

so LKY galvanized the trade unions, became their advisers etc. GCT knew that to rise, he had to rise through the ranks. he made it into the Admin Svc, the echelon of spore's civil svc (which then, shows the factual inaccuracy of your rambunctious claim that he was a low civil servant). LHL, well, he fit the bill since young - talented, abled, academically gifted, military grounded, more than bilingual and obviously a man destined for great things who joined politics at the invitation of Goh.

basically, even if you are saying all the men described here are not individually brilliant and hence my supposed sarcastic view toward Chee doesnt stand, i hope my clarification of what my point really was will help. and also, please get your facts and perspectives grounded on factual premise before posting online for public, though limited, consumption.
• Haha ....
Fact 1: Lee Kuan Yew was a lawyer before he was PM.

Fact 2: Goh Chok Tong was a civil servant of the lowest form before he involved himself in politics and before becoming PM.

Fact 3: Lee Hsien Loong was and still is Lee Kuan Yew's son.

Which of these, may I ask, is not factual?

Time will tell if what Dr Chee does is effective. Not you. You are just someone who has no idea what is going on - ??
• Haha ....
By the way, just to be polite and answer you on the things you posted to me considering it has taken you such a long time to prepare.

1) If I really had missed the point, I was certainly misled by your original message which clearly suggested that Dr Chee is an "Author" who is trying to be voted in as "Prime Minister". So, I would suggest that you stop posting such misleading message.

2) You are belittling the power of books. It may spread more slowly than modern channels, but it reaches deeper our soul than any media. This is the maximum reach. For widespread dissemination of information, Dr Chee is already using means such as internet, visits, and flyers etc.

3) How do you know if he really believes in "..." and all the crap you said?

4) If he would want a good return in investment in writing, he would have written a novel.

5) Dr Chee was not a candidate for election in 2006. By the way, where did you find evidence in proving or disproving the voting results' correlation with the sales of his book? What makes you draw to the conclusion you had?

6) I did not make personal judgement on the abilities of LKY, GCT, and LHL. I make factual statements about their original status before they were PM.

7) Your recount of the events that they did to progress through the political ladder contains your personal opinions about them being talented and so on. It does not represent how I think about them and the situation.

8) I hope my clarification can help you more than you can help me.

9) I have written based on facts. You have selected partial facts to make biased judgements and conclusions.
