Singapore Democrats

You know the rule of law is trashed when our police start playing the role of politicians, and unscrupulous ones at that.

Readers may remember that in November last year, a group of about 30 Burmese nationals staged a protest along Orchard Road during the ASEAN Summit held at the Shangri-la Hotel.

The silent demonstration took place at the height of global unhappiness over the killing of peaceful protesters and Buddhist monks in Rangoon. The protest could not have been anymore peacefully conducted by a group of conscientious and disciplined Burmese who call themselves the Overseas Burmese Patriots (OBP).

Nonetheless under the law, which the British colonial overlords introduced and which our PAP overlords continue to exploit, what the Burmese did were illegal.

But the police at that time issued a statement that the Orchard Road protest was absolutely legal: "...in contrast to Chee's acts of civil disobedience, Singaporeans and Myanmar nationals in Singapore have organised themselves to express their sentiments and concerns for the Myanmar situation in a lawful manner." (emphasis added)

But, of course. In order to portray Dr Chee Soon Juan as Diablo, the police had to lie and say that the assembly was perfectly legal (even as it was taking down the names of the Burmese protesters).

The Straits Times, was of course on hand to twist the knife in a little deeper with its usual part-report-part-commentary gutter-type journalism. It wrote in the same report that carried the police statement: "Even the [OBP] demonstrators yesterday previously said they did not wish to break the law."

And just in case anyone missed the contrast, the newspaper headlined the story In Singapore Myanmar activists keep within the law.

Almost a year later, however, and after Singapore handed over the chairmanship of ASEAN to Thailand, the authorities started to make their move. Now the Straits Times, in an about face, ran a report whose headline screamed: Myanmar activists not above the law.

The Ministry for Home Affairs said that the OBP protesters have "chosen to [conduct their activities] in open and persistent defiance of our laws." What a difference one year makes.

Besides, the contrast with Dr Chee need no longer be maintained - it had served its purpose in 2007.

Last Friday the OBP held a news conference revealing that six of its Orchard Road protesters had their visas and entry permits either cancelled or delayed. The activists implied that the six were the victims of unfair action by the Singapore government. The Ministry of Home Affairs did nor refute the charge.

However after Friday's media conference the authorities quickly approved the visas of two of the activists, a testament to the power of publicity.

This is how the rule of law is butchered in Singapore. The authorities have no qualms in using law enforcement either to demonise the SDP or minimise political damage for the ruling party.

The state of the rule of law in Singapore is in shambles. The worry is not whether but to what degree such a dysfunctional state will affect the future of this country.

We don't give a shit about Burmese clowns. They are here to depress wages and fuck up the job market. The whole damn lot, whether junta or Aung San Suu Kii apologists, should all fuck off back to Burma.

I totally agree with your sentiments, cos i feel the same too.

However, if we look at the case itself, it still proof that in SG, there is no rule of law, only got suka suka rule.

seems like the sdp has an exaggerated sense of self importance eh? thinking that the whole rule of law is twisted and turned just for you guys?

please, less of such ego?

anyway. i think the burmese should not create prob for us. dun make us fight over this issue generated by foreigners. as long as citizens are taken care of, such issues dont matter.

sdp also dun think u r the best la. certainly u are not. and u never ever give credit where its due. tts why i frustrated at sdp. it is v one-sided, never ever saying how good we have done as a nation. not even a mention about our first olympic goal.

so much for being patriots. very saddening.

Our dear dirty Harry will do anything just to discredit SDP or any Opposition at that!

Remember this rule of the S'pore law!
maxChew  -  Is our Govt beholden to the Generals of Burma?    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 4:42 pm
I hope not. I remember LKY commenting in the media abt the duaghter of Supremo Gen Than Swee bedecked with diamonds and other precious stones during her recent wedding...."she lighted up like a Christmas tree".I'm sure Gen Than Swee if shown the burmese translation of LKY's snide remark would have fumed and call LKY @#$$%^&* and even threaten to pull out this and that. But what? Do they have substantial wealth invested/hoarded here?
Looks like it's unlikely. So why is the PAP Govt seemingly on their side most of the time?
TanTai Wei  -     Tue, 26 Aug 2008 4:42 pm
The inconsistency is hardly surprising, since this is a government which is "pragmatic" and, thus, "opportunistic".

So, LKY says he does not subscribe to the morals behind democracy per se, but only to "democracy that works".

Then, where consistency, truth and justice are deemed not to "work", they are readily set aside, for the pragmatist's ultimate test of worth and value is practical benefit.

Notice that the pledge we are made to say upholds a "democratic society, based on justice and equality" only where it brings about "prosperity and progress for our nation".

This implies that where jutice, truth and freedom are deemed not to bring us prosperity, worse still, where injustice and untruth are thought to "work", we could, without feeling any qualms, flout justice and truth, even positively do the unjust and say the untruth.

So, we have here a case in point, in the inconsistency pointed out by SDP.

One year ago, in order to suit a specific purpose deemed to be beneficial, that slant at rationalising that executive stance was maintained.

Now, they slant it another way, in order to rationalise what they what they now consider pragmatically important to do.

Notice I say "rationalise" and not "justify", for a pragmatist does not care for justice per se, and so he never really justifies (proves that justice is and seen to be done), only gives excuses.

Yea...

Why is SDP so concerned about these Burmese 'Foreign Talents'?

Aren't there too many of these FT around in Singapore already..?

SDP says Singapore too many FTs and then still support these Burmese for what?

You contradict yourself SDP

Please don't use "we", is your own opinion only, not "we".

Depress of wages has got nothing to do with the Burmese, it is the government policies. They have open the float gate to attract guest workers, not to help them to build a better life but to exploit them.

To Mike,Anon and Anonymous,

you guys don't really get the message that SDP wants to highlight to you all.
It is not about FT or Burmese. It is all about the inconsistencies and unfair act of PAP.Be mature !Make sure you won't be treated / cheated the same way in future when your times come.

In today's news about opening up the Speaker's corner

Quote:
Singapore Permanent Residents, though, will require a police permit to organise demonstrations.

There is a problem. Did the govt forget that many PRs have to commit 2 years to National Service? And yet, cannot even comment on govt policy.

Such an unpopular policy can only have one effect, chase away the FTs.

Maybe that was intended, the PAP is finally heading calls to develop local talent.

The PAP works in arcane ways and would of course not directly express this.

Hmmm......

At last, thanks to the good work by SDP... The government has finally submitted to pressures to allow protest and demo at the speaker's corner.

GOOD JOB GUYS!!!
HAHA  -  Congrats SDP :)    Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:57 am
Congrats to SDP (CSJ & CSC), Martyn See and the many others from SDP. Their work on Oct 2006 finally paid off. Although there is still much more to be done. And it certainly can't be done just by these few people. Ordinary Singaporeans have to take up the responsibility as well. Speaker's corner is just a small start. It was terribly embarassing for the police force to handle innocent people like animals. They just could not think straight at that moment. Shouldn't the police work independently away from the pressures of the govt who use it for political gain.
