SDP's Jeffrey George handing out flyers to students at NTUSingapore Democrats

In our continuing effort to raise awareness among our youths and to get them more interested in the nation's politics, several of the SDP's leaders visited the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) today. We paid a visit to the Singapore Management University last week.

Plunging into the packed canteen the group handed out flyers, chatted with the students, posed for photographs, and exchanged emails.

"Here's something for you to read," Mr Gandhi Ambalam told the students, "it's important to read alternative views and to open up your minds." Most of the students took the flyers and started reading them, curious as to what an opposition party was doing on campus.

Their reaction is not surprising given that the Government has for years clamped down on political activity in our universities.

When lunch was over and the party began to leave, a student reporter from the Nanyang Chronicle, the university's flagship student publication, came up and wanted to do an interview with Dr Chee.

In the space of a few minutes the group of journalists-to-be, photographers and cameramen sat around with the SDP members for the interview.

"What brings you here?" one of them started off.

"We're here to raise awareness among the students and to get them interested on national issues," Dr Chee replied.

"Did you have to ask for a permit to come in here?"

"When I go and pick up my daughter in school, I need to ask for permission if I want to wander around the school's premises. But that's because she is in a kindergarten!" Dr Chee explained. "Don't keep asking for permission for everything you do in Singapore, it's not the way if we are going to succeed in the future."

She smiled.

"What do you hope to see among the students?"

Dr Chee explained that students in any society are always the ones to question authority, push the boundaries, and challenge the status quo. It's only in dictatorial systems where students are brow-beaten into submissiveness.

Even the academics are bullied, he pointed out and cited the example of the university's economiic professors who had, some years back, cited data that showed that the majority of jobs created in Singapore went to foreigners working here. Then Minister for Manpower Ng Eng Hen challenged the dons and bullied them into retracting their data.

It is this kind of attitude that cripples the intellectual climate in this country and, unfortunately, prevents our academic institutions from becoming first-rate ones that they have the potential to be. Dr Chee then called on the students to rise to the challenge to shape their institutions and their own lives.

When asked what other ways the Democrats could reach out to the students, Dr Chee said that coming to the campus was much more personal but asking students to visit the SDP's website was the only way that the SDP could present its views to them.

Another way would be to address students through forums organised by the student unions. The SDP leader asked if the students would organise such an event. The student reporters said that they would convey the message to their leaders. Of course, this would need the approval of the school's administration.

The SDP will continue to visit the various campuses and educate our youths about their role in the nation's politics.

Great work. Our students are completely brainwashed by the PAP education system. It's time the students were made to realise this and take steps to acquire true knowledge to become more rounded individuals.

If Chee in charge of Singapore, got university to go to or not? He will be so busy going round the world meeting foreign NGOs, where got time to worry about Universities? Singapore Us last ten years got improvement - I wonder who takes the credit - Dr Chee? Because he protest, Uni's ranking go up?
  • Old Uncle's Friend - Malaysians did it, why not Singapore?
    Two ways to see it.
In Malaysia, no opposition members has been charged with sodomy. Malaysia did it, why not Singapore?
If there was no SDP, prehaps we would have been allowed to protest in Speakers corner long ago? But because there is Chee, took longer for Govt to open up?
  • Ayzkhai SocialistSGP - Student Leaders Rise!!!
It is without doubt encouraging to see that SDP is doing all it can within it limits. But the reality is that Singapore lacks a truely outspoken Student Leader.Singapore is a Democratic country and its citizen should not be afraid to speak up and take up issues that concerns our daily lives.Let us all rise and DEMAND for change.Only we (CITIZENS) can change the path that Singapore would take in the coming years.
  • Young singer songwriter
Chee knows no plan for Singapore except protesting. He should quit SDP as he is making a mockery of a political party

DO NOT gray this entry you pluralists
  • no pap supporter - but singapore is better than malaysia
Umpteen years ago we are already better than Malaysia. So, don't bother to compare with those jokers over there.
  • AnnA - Behind The Curtain
Living in a dictatorship country will never be better. Stop fooling ourselves. We have never been better in soul and mind for a very long time now!! Don't forget, we do not have assets like the Malaysian!!
  • AnnA - Copied From My Previous Comment
The progress is slowly leading us back to square one - to the third world lifestyle...

Imagine 4000 applicants(families) for rental homes? Turning many average Singaporeans into bankruptcies due to new and newer policies e.g. bank loans etc.

The amount of CPF monies owned by some not-well-to-do Singaporeans being withheld but they didn't even have a clue that this is the time when many PRs will start selling their home(bought on 1997 onwards) with the ridiculously high market prices now on HDB flats and walk out of Singapore with their profits on Singapore properties. Compare between an average individual CPF savings and property sales profits

Road taxes, COEs, season parking, ERP, ERP, ERP, ERP and you still don't own your car. You won't stand a chance to own an asset here in Singapore.

Older generations has also contributed in the success of Singapore but why only LKY gets the benefits while many others (at his age) has to clean toilets, gather cartons/cans etc? Even gardening/table cleaning jobs are taken by some so called foreign 'talent' workers??

When SDP going to visit Tekong and spread the message that NS is killing SG?
  • Impressed with SDP's efforts
I hope the students of NTU, put aside their social conditioning and 10 years of compulsory PAP education (Primary + Secondary) and be open minded to alternative policies from the SDP.

SDP, please visit the Polytechnics & PEOs soon.
  • good
excellent best of the best at least peoples accecpt the flyers!!!!
  • Husrin
Good work SDP! Slowly we shall overcome. It's always good to start with the impressionable young. Look at Malaysia. Anwar has firmly established himself into Parliament. With the power of votes from people who have woken up and have spoken in one voice "WE WANT CHANGE!"

You can and will achieve this goal Dr. Chee. Always remember the silent majority are waiting in the wings for you. How we wish we have your indomitable spirit and courage to demand what belongs to us. God be with you and the SDP as you embark again and again on this seemingly impossible quest. You have my unwavering support.

Oh and by the way, I have dreams of joining the Air Force. But of course I'm sure all of you here are aware of my rather slim chances aye? And because of? Yes. My race. I'm a Malay Muslim.

That is why I will never be able to enter the Air Force. Not because I'm not qualified. Not because of my fitness. But because of outdated politics and a strongly imbued racial prejudice perpetrated by the ruling government. And I feel that this will never change. Not unless the PAP is done and dusted into the annals of this nation's dark history.

How different am I from a Chinese or an Indian? Will I not spill my blood to defend my birthright? The nation, the country that has raised me, nurtured me, taught me and prepared me for the ways of the world? Am I forever earmarked to be the one "at risk" of turning against this country because of my religion? Is that how it is now still? It is sad. For I have taken the pledge, the sacred oath to protect, defend and spill my blood for this sacred ground that I walk upon. I was born here. I am a citizen of this country. Surely I deserve the right to fight for this country without prejudice from my own government!

Regardless of race, language or religion..

To build a democratic society based on justice and equality..

    Sigh.

God be with you Dr. Chee. And the SDP. God be with you all. For only the good in this world prevail. Always.

Great work, SDP. Open the students' mind, show them the new horizon, undo what PAP propaganda machine has done to them. Hope our future leaders can think independently without looking for direction from PAP all the time.

    Dear Mr Husrin,

I am a Singaporean... You are a singaporean... my heart is with you... We must persevere like Dr Chee... Remember the proverb... SEDIKIT, SEDIKIT, LAMA LAMA, JADI BUKIT.... In Mandarin is 集沙成塔。

    Your fellow Singapoean..
  • Paul - University pupils
From considerable contact with Singaporean graduates over the past few years, I have concluded that it will be easier to extract blood from a stone than to get a frank political opinion from a Singaporean. My impression is that most of them are just older versions of secondary school pupils rather than university students. I make the distinction between pupils, who are spoonfed knowledge, and students, who study by themselves to gain knowledge. Sad to say, in general, the natural product of a totalitarian environment is a university pupil. In intellectual terms, they have grown older without growing up. Their minds are still tied to mummy's apron strings and shackled to the seeming safety of a protected childhood.

I applaud the SDP's attempt to inject a healthy dose of reality into a politically sterile university environment. Those students are surely not too young to be exposed to ideas that first world students take for granted. Keep up the good work.
  • Hawk Eye - Thats the way it should be!
I think this is a very good approach to spread the word of democracy.

Its more of a personal sharing session and the students won't feel stressed or worried to ask questions.

Unlike LKY's sharing session with the students. The moment when a not-so-good question was asked, LKY's face turned black immediately.

Dr. Chee, would you consider going to Sec or JCs as well? I am from a Sec school and one teacher once said to my colleague... "Those who are anti-goverments, are usually those uneducated". I think its time to educate our teachers on what is right or wrong.
  • AnnA - Husrin
"Regardless of race, language or religion..

To build a democratic society based on justice and equality.."

We have been born and bred here with pledge. Our fellow countrymen is our family. We will always be.

Sadly, it was LKY's fault that makes those divisions among Singaporean. He was the one exaggerating about Singaporean in racism and being racist. Spreading our 'hates' toward our neighbours too.

    Him and his newspapers.
  • duh
Do something that is substantial, rather than just protesting. That is when I will support SDP.

I do not support PAP. I only support those who prove themselves to be able to keep me alive. Don't come with the talk that we are tortured or dictated or whatever, because you are leading your life still, aren't you?

I bet this will be grayed.
