If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.

Singapore Democrats

Mr Anwar Ibrahim
Leader of the Opposition
Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia

On behalf of the members of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), I congratulate you on your recent landslide victory in the Permatang Pauh by-election.

The political tsunami that has swept across your country brings about a new dawn of democracy to Malaysia. We in Singapore, who are also fighting an authoritarian regime, find this development encouraging.

It is especially noteworthy that the Asian region is marching inexorably towards democracy, and towards a more just and equitable society free from oppression. South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Indonesia, Timor Leste, Thailand and now Malaysia have shown that desire to build free and democratic societies. The rest of Asia will follow suit.

We wish to express our admiration for the determination and vision that you and your democratic colleagues have shown. We wish you every success.

With warm regards,

Gandhi Ambalam
Chairman
Singapore Democratic Party

When will Singapore experience its own political tsunami?

It's time the PAP authoritarian regime is consigned to the dustbin of history.

I think when Anwar comes to power, Singaporeans will be more enlightened and less fearful of Lee Kuan Yew's egoistic draconian laws.
Old Uncle's Friend  -  Let's follow Malaysia! Yeah!    Fri, 29 Aug 2008 3:47 pm
According to SDP, Anwar won by a landslide (60+%) of votes. Because UMNO lost by a landslide, UMNO calling for Adullah to step down. Last GE, SDP lost by a BIGGER landslide (less than 25% of votes) - therefore, SDP should have asked its leader to step down. Got happen or not ah? Party cannot get votes, must kick leaders out right? Who is SDP leader now? Still the same as last GE or not?

No Freedom  -  Some freedom in M'sia-easier    Fri, 29 Aug 2008 5:19 pm
The difference between M'sia and S'pore is that there is "democracy" - people dare to speak out w/o fear!

Unlike Singapore you get sued/imprisoned if you speak up and oppositions get "fixed"!

S'pore controlled by dictator who is very afraid their golden rice bowls are broken if people know too much!

anwar is anwar...

Why?

He was a Vice Premier before he became an opposition MP..

In Singapore, do you have any opposition MP who is formerly PAP minister..?

None..

So How can Singapore be like M'sia at all?

illogical

Muhammad Shamin  -  Salam Reformasi     Fri, 29 Aug 2008 8:09 pm
Pak Anwar has shown us that anything is possible if we plan well and work together. He has manage to bring 3 parties of different ideologies together, show solidarity and win big in the 8th March Elections.

The problem in Singapore is that Opposition have yet to show solidarity among themselves. We had one foolish opposition member from the Workers' Party who voted for the PAP instead of fellow opposition the last election.

I hope that the Oppostion could form a solid alliance to counter the ruling PAP and bring about some positive development in the country.

Salam Reformasi!

Hi Mike,

you cheong Geylang too much liao, so all the blood flow to the little head, not enough blood in the big head to think logically. Think Cat50 and Cat150 you also cannot tell the difference.

Singapore Opposition is very much characterised by personalities of the individual leaders.

The lack of unity between each of them justifies the dominant rule of one party

The only way for SGP opposition to gain support like the way our Malaysian counterpart is experiencing at the moment is to UNITE.Unity is the key to many great things that will come soon after.I hope that our Honorable Dr Chee could be the one that unite all in SGP.Let us take the first step towards True Democracy in SGP.For s start, all opposition leaders and members could gather at Speaker's Corner to show Solidarity.

If Malaysia is so good, then go there.

Let us not compare Singapore with Malaysia.

U said: "If Malaysia is so good, then go there. "

All the ministers PAP picked are yes-sayers. They are too busy polishing their golden rice bowl. The only hope for democracy in Singapore is change coming from bottom up not from top down.

Year 2008 is a year of change, of forced consolidation and rebirth.

Out of university in 1998, I entered the workforce in 1999 fresh with memories of having to work part-time throughout my practice law course. The economy was still feeling the effects of the Asian financial crisis.
