Singapore Democrats

Something is happening at the Singapore Democratic Party. We haven't been this active or excited about the future in years. It's strange if you think about it. The party is facing a humongous damages claim from the Lees and our leaders and friends are being charged in court. Things should look bleak and spirits down.

And yet, the opposite seems to be happening. Something is stirring. We have never been so committed in our cause and the sense of purpose has never been stronger. In fact, the number in our ranks as well as the number of our friends have grown and continue to grow.

Without these new members and supporters we would never have been able to do so many things all at once: visit universities, organise our annual dinner, go for the Tak Boleh Tahan! walkabouts, maintain our Internet presence, conduct nonviolent actions, etc all while going to court and attending police investigations. It's hard work, there's no doubt about it, but no one is complaining.

If anything, everyone's raring to go even faster and further. Only our limited resources, financial and otherwise, are holding us back. But that's okay because prudence, like discretion, is the better part of valour. We're building up systematically by laying a solid foundation with every forward step that we take.

In a way, we have the PAP to thank for this. We're not being facetious. Without the kind of absurd punitive action from the Government, we would not have a cause to rally around. One thing that you don't want when you're fighting for freedom and democracy is to be ignored by the powers-that-be, or worse, praised by them.

There is a sense that the time for democracy has come and we know that we need to move purposefully to consolidate what we have achieved and to break new ground.

Our dinner on Sunday will commemorate another year of gains. It will be an opportunity for us to renew and strengthen the bond of solidarity with our friends and supporters as well as to bring in more people into our growing family.

Our vision for Singapore is clear: we want not only a prosperous society but also a just and compassionate one where the people come first. Our mission is to persuade our fellow citizens to join in and support the cause. Our actions must be grounded in the values of democracy and tolerance.

So if you haven't already got a dinner ticket, call Jaslyn at 9239-3133 or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and get one. It'll be an evening of fun and food, not to mention first rate company.

There'll also be a more serious side to the evening's programme. Dr Chee Soon Juan will launch his new book A Nation Cheated and deliver the evening's address which will include a discussion on the Singapore Democrats' plans for the future.

So come and join us. It'll be more than a dinner that you'll be attending, it'll be part of the exciting future that you'll be witnessing.

Event: SDP Annual Dinner
Date: 31 Aug 08, Sunday
Time: 6:00 pm

No worry SDP.

If you can handle things without money, then you will have no problem in handling the future. :) With money will be no problem, then.

You are evidently showing us your abilities!

Great work SDP!!

Dear SDP,

If you are sincere and honest about what you are doing, people will be touched.

I used to believe what PAP said about Dr Chee being a pyschopath and that the people in the SDP are troublemakers.

It has taken me sometime to truly understand that this is not the case. In fact, in any truly democratic country, even the ones with the strongest economies, USA, Japan, France, and UK, etc., the way in which SDP processes its challenges against unfair and unreasonable government policies is exactly the way it is being done in those countries. Directing open questions and challenges, protest, and conducting open forums for discussion are all part of politics and policy making.

In fact, what the PAP expects of an ideal opposition like that of the WP is simply outrageous. With compromising attitude and pointing out critical issues for discussion but not fighting for it, is simply useless. So far, can anyone tell me, which policy in Singapore have been changed or initiated by the WP? Low Thia Kiang has constantly reminded us that he is the person who brought in some ideas related to the streaming of primary school education. I would like to ask him in return, "Is that sufficient for an outstanding veteran politician like himself to be contributing?

As opposition parties, your core responsibilities are to challenge the government policies and perspectives, and fight for it if you find it being unreasonable. Do not compromise, I urged.

This message is not written to criticize other opposition parties for their inabilities. It is rather to spur them on to a new approach of handling politics in the new-age Singapore. If we are indeed first world, we should act like one.

All people, SDP deserves the support from our people. Be it you are PAP supporter or anti-PAP supporter, for the good of Singapore and its government, strong and outspoken oppositions are required.

The current political climate in SG is pathetic. At least SDP is making a difference, for the better.

Who has access to ISP?
Are net users annoymous ?

Question is what is the level of access to isp information?

For serious criminal issues, I would agree that ISP info should be given out to authority.

But how do we know how is ip address info being used , like say if 100 people polled on the net annoymously, is there a way to find out where they are living?
which town, for example? If so, is this information being used by someone?

Of course, I am just asking what I do not know about the level of internet freedom that is found in singapore.

Who has control of the ISP?

Isn't it simple? They fear the truth about their severe unpopularity surfacing out through this by-election, more than they fear appearing undemocratic.

Support is coming your way, every step of the way. There is a sense that something big will happen in the next GE. The events in our neighbouring countries(Malaysia,Philippines, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand) direct towards a more open society, with their government being more answerable to their electorate. My question is, SDP, will you be my future government?

Two weeks ago I had the honour to meet Dr Chee and his committee members in their office. Yesterday I returned to Canada.

I can testify that they are a group of happy people.

I also meet Dr. Chee's wife and their three children.

I hope Dr Chee would take my suggestion that they do a "petition" or some sort for us overseas ex-Singaporeans to get our respective Members of Parliament to question our own government on why we are still doing business with a suppressive regime like PAP.

I must also add that after the visiting Dr. Chee's office I bought my 12 year old son to play in the playground in front of the SDP office. I met Dr. Chee's wife and her 3 children playing there. In a matter of less that 5 minutes after meeting her, I could see a young man with a back pack and listening to his head phone slowing walking pass us..his head was looking down. Then I also notices two young men sitting and looking towards Dr. Chee's office. This gives me the impression that Dr. Chee's activities are constantly watched over by the police as these men look like typical plain cloths policemen.

I admire Dr Chee and their supporters...they are indeed very brave people.
anon  -  when is the next election?    Sun, 31 Aug 2008 6:58 pm
When is the next election? Between now and then, there is much to be done if the opposition really want to unseat the PAP. The PAP has many mechanism to ensure that they win ... what can we do?

I do support the exSINgaporean's idea of petitioning the respective governments to force PAP to open up.
