Move over Charlie's Angels...Singapore Democrats

The Singapore Democrats celebrated our 28th Anniversary yesterday in a most colourful way. Our guests showed up in bright Hawaiian garb. Some looked like they had come straight from the open surf.

The evening opened with party chairman Gandhi Ambalam welcoming our friends. Among them was Mr J B Jeyaretnam who was greeted with appreciative applause. There were also members from the Workers' Party and the National Solidarity Party.

A surprise guest was Mr Vincent Cheng who was cruelly imprisoned and abused in 1987 by the ISD for being a "mastermind" in the so-called Marxist conspiracy. The crowd told the PAP what it thought of the detention by giving Mr Cheng a rousing welcome. Ms Wong Souk Yee, another 1987 detainee, was also present.
Gandhi Ambalam welcoming guests
Husband and wife team of Suraya and Jufri then treated the audience with a gutsy rendition of the Phantom of the Opera. Ms Suraya recently won the talent contest when she was a finalist at the Mrs Singapore pageant.

Messrs Seelan, Shafiee and Jufri were next to get everybody snapping their fingers to a couple of snazzy compositions entitled: Pappy Go Nappy and Fix the Opposition. TheJufri and Suraya with emcee Jeffrey George lyrics drew chuckles from all around. They group promised to record the soundtrack which, we are told, will hit the Internet circuit very soon. You won't want to miss this.

Children are never far away from the SDP's activities. Eight of them, ranging from three to nine years, came on stage for the all-opposition hula hoop competition. Judging by their parents' expressions, every kid won.

Then came the time for limbo rock. Some of the guests who were volunteered all gamely came up on stage to bob and weave their way under the bar.

Vincent Cheng in pursuit of limbo rock fameBut with the likes of Dr Russell Heng, Mr Vincent Cheng, Dr Wong Wee Nam, Dr Chee Soon Juan, and Mr Ambalam who are in their, shall we say, wiser halves of their lives, gravity was always going to be the winner. If not for the Reggae music pounding away in the background, you would have heard the creaks of joints from the neck to the knees.

Mercifully the gyration ended and Dr Chee Soon Juan came back on stage to launch his latest book, A Nation Cheated. He briefly introduced the publication and then addressed the recent announcement of demonstrations being allowed at the Speakers' Corner.

He told the audience that the reversal of the Government's position was a result of civil disobedience being waged in Singapore and stressed that activists must step up campaign efforts to bring about reform where the rights of the people to free speech and assembly are fully restored.

The kids doing their thingNext up was the lucky draw. First prize: Lamborghini LP-5604 series. Oops! Sorry wrong party...that was the PAP's. Ours was a portable hammock. Other prizes included a pair of watches, a Takashimaya gift voucher and a steam iron, all donated by supporters and well-wishers.

This was followed by a skit directed and produced by former Workers' Party member Mr Maurice Neo and performed by fellow actors which included Mr Jufrie Mahmood and Mr Chia Ti Lik. The 15-minute theatre is a long-shot for an Oscar but it was a hilarious parody of the Tak Boleh Tahan campaign and its encounters with our men-in-blue.

The evening rounded off with everyone joining in the singing of We Shall Overcome.

To all of you who came to the party, thank you for making it such a memorable evening for us. We hope you had as great a time as we did.

And kudos to Ms Chee Siok Chin and Ms Jaslyn Go who were the driving and creative forces behind the event. Great job, ladies! Now, about next year's dinner...

someone sad  -  good to know...    Tue, 02 Sep 2008 7:03 am
Glad to know that the party went well, and it looks very much like how we Singaporeans should bond!

Well done SDP!

I doubt I will bond very well with the type of arrogant people we all see on the news(in a good light all the time).

If I were to vote in an election between SDP and the-party-who-always-wins, I will definitely go for SDP. The other party never listens to the people! Well I'm pretty sure SDP would, and I need a government who would listen and care more.

So well done SDP! Keep up the good work and hopefully things turn out better the next time! Remember! We citizens have only ourselves to look after one another at this present time!
LIM TUNG HEE  -  Kudos to Dissidents    Tue, 02 Sep 2008 7:41 am
It must have been a most heart-warming gathering to see Vincent Cheng and Suok Yee having the courage to meet up with the activists.Afterall, dissidents like them and the activists have only one thing in common;that is, to make Singapore a better place. The sacrifices made by the two and others would always be remembered by supportive citizens or true oppositionists who dare challenge the oppression. It's a matter of time when democracy makes its presence....

Wish I had been there to ask Vincent Cheng.

Seemed like only LKY knew what went on in ISD, not even then Prime Minister Goh and President Nair.

Nair, in his preface to Francis Seow's "To Catch a Tartar", said that he initially didn't agree to write it but consented only after reading Seow's account of how cruelly they treated him under interrogation in ISD.

So, even a former President had to learn of ISD at second hand.

Also, when Vincent Cheng, Toh Soh Lan and others were first arrested by ISD, and on their release (after the usual "rehabilitaion" and "confession of guilt") complained of ill-treatment and coercion (Toh Soh Lan said she was slapped, etc.), Prime Minister Goh promised a full public inquiry into treatment of prisoners in ISD. At that time, LKY was away in Europe.

Meanwhile, Toh Soh Lan and company issued a public statement retracting their confessions made whilst in detention. They were then detained again, and under detention retracted their public denial of guilt.

LKY had returned, and Goh said the inquiry he had promised was "no longer necessary", because the group had retracted their public statements.

But, surely, the inquiry had been rendered even more necessary by the group's second confession, made only whilst in detention again. It was more of the same sort of event that had made Goh see the need for the inquiry. It infact confirmed public suspicion that prisoners confessed under duress in ISD.

Didn't this sugggest strongly that only LKY knew what went on in ISD, and had stopped the inquiry Goh innocently promised? How else to interpret Goh's apparently stupid reason for not proceeding with the inquiry he solemnly promised as Prime Minister?

Our present President, however, knows. He was a famous Director of ISD.

Another point worth making, arising from Vincent Cheng's event.

Jayakumar, attempting in parliament to justify Vincent's detention without trial (he was in there for two years), conceded that he wasn't as yet a danger to society, but that his was a case of "preventive detention", and claimed that if not detained, "in twenty years" he would endanger society.

But detention without trial had been justified by government on such claims as that, whilst ISD had concrete proofs of a detainee's guilt and real threat to national security, they could not be presented in open court. Witnesses, for example, might not dare to testify in open court, and certain things had to remain secret for security reasons.

But, in Vincent's case, we had our then Law Minister admitting that someone was detained under ISA despite that he wasn't even as yet a security threat, leave alone the question of evidences of real guilt that could not be made public!

Jaya openly admitted that the case was only conjectural, based upon his fertile imagination as to what could happen in twenty years in the distant future!

Then, what protection does any of us have against such fertile imagination of polticians?
Mike Chan  -  Our $4 million p.a.Prataman was never Dir ISD    Tue, 02 Sep 2008 4:47 pm
Correction....SR Nathan was never a Director of ISD but was the Director of SID (Security Intelligence Dept) in the 70s-80s. SID is under Mindef and not MHA. It deals with external security threats whereas ISD deals with internal security threats.
Party was enjoyable overall but the food could have been better to say the least. Hope SDP will select a
better caterer next year. I went home hungry. Sorry, but truth must always be told in democratic circles.

See Mike. You just missed an opportunity to hook up with some cute girls. Go Geylang some more....lah!?
Jaslyn Go  -     Tue, 02 Sep 2008 6:58 pm
Hi Mike Chan..

I am sorry to hear that you went home hungry.

There was alot of left over food that some of us ended up having to pack it to bring back home..

Nevertheless, kindly accept our apologies.

We appreciate your valuable feedback and will strive to do better the next time.

It is heartening to know that despite this hiccup, you did enjoy yourself at the party.

Hope to see you in the next SDP event.

To All Our Guests..

Thank you for attending the SDP's Hawaiian Night -28th Anniversary Dinner..

I hope you enjoyed the night. However, due to the overwhelming response, we ran out of drinks midway. Thanks to Gerald who made a trip to replenish the drinks.

Why was there so much leftovers although there were easily >100 pax?
Ans: the food was edible but most were uneatable. I suppose I'm a fuzzy eater, sorry. The beehoon and the tofu dish were the only foods pretty good. Did u look at the dumpsters provided outside? I did...a lot of wastage including mine.
Anyway, thks Jaslyn. I was very proud to have met you after reading abt you and yr husband in the sdp blog.I also met the courageous young malay couple. All of you are brave young soldiers for the democracy movement here where SDP tops the list.Keep up the good work and be strong as you guys are on the side of right.
Remember: What does not kill you will make you stronger! (Dr CSJ is a living example)
Regds to all SDP bravehearts!

Glad I came to meet up many others.. Glad to see that all are friendly.. Glad to know Singaporeans are waking up one by one. There'll be the day when everyone wakes up.

Jaslyn, thanx for your assistance. SDP, thanx for organising the gathering. Without these parties or events, I wouldn't know that there are still friendly people around :)

Cheers!
