Singapore Democrats

"Civil disobedience," Dr Chee Soon Juan told the audience, "if carried out astutely and in a disciplined manner, works." He was speaking at the launch of his new book A Nation Cheated held on Sunday night at the Hort Park. The occasion was also the Singapore Democrats' annual dinner marking the 28th anniversary of the party. To watch excerpts of Dr Chee's speech click here.

SO did the "illegal" gathering of hundreds of Singaporeans at the airport resulted in any arrest?

Did they apply for permit to be at the airport to welcome the olympics team?

So, is the current situation in Thailand a sterling example of the success of civil disobedience? Is this something that Singapore must emulate and go through? Opinions pls...

What success of civil disobedience?

Pro-gov protesters are planted saboteurs.

They are used as excuse for martial law.

So if civil disobedience = martial law = unsuccessful

Absolutely not! Threatening to bring down the financial system of the country to overthrow the government is ironic.

According to Mahatma Gandhi, Retaliation includes swearing and cursing.

Looking at the many comments of SDP supporters would seriously cast doubt whether they are really committed to Civil Disobedience...

At the above two comments - seems like one Singaporean acting like a Thai and Viet person.

"Thai"'s argument, like the other one quoting Taiwanese parliamentarians punching one another, commits the fallacy of using exceptional and extreme cases to illustrate a rule.

It is like arguing against the medical use of surgery because it has caused death in exceptional cases.

The sound quality of the youtube is not very good. If possible, please post the transcript or prepared speech.

Chee cannot win votes, so must have civil disobedience, must protest. Sad la. Democracy is about VOTES. Cannot win votes, how can be defender of democracy, defender of human rights? When a leader has failed, he starts a war to distract and unite his followers - favorite trick in banana republics! So Chee says SDP must fight the dictatorship? Hmmm......

Hello Old Uncle's Fiend ... are you an idiot?

Chee's aims are ... free press, transparency, democracy. When that happens, we can see if he can win.

I vaguely remember when Saddam had his election, he got > 99% of the popular, does that mean anything? Probably not.

Even "IF" Chee were to win, he does not have members in his team with senior management experience to run Singapore. Yet he is so naive, thinking that running a country is just simply about talking democracy.

He talks about FamiLee dictatorship over Singapore. "IF" Chee wins, we'll see his sister and family members all taking top positions. So it becomes FamiChee. Still back to dictatorship in the end.

"IF" Chee wins, he'll cut all taxes to make people very happy, he'll grant plenty of benefits to make people even happier. Less tax more benefits, so where is money going to come from ?

Answer : He does not have any idea about financial management, he does not know about management budgetting. So, he'll just use our national reserves to give benefits away.

Result : Singapore a bankrupt country in the end.

He criticised the NS system. True enough, no one wants to spend 2 years in SAF. Without a safe country can we have safe homes ? Just because the government does not publish the strains and implicit threats from our neighbouring countries, does not mean we take peace for granted.

Switzerland being lucky to escape both World Wars and being blessed by NATO neighbours like Germany, France, and Britain, still maintains a strong military. What makes Chee thinks that Singapore is safer than Switzerland to take peace for granted ?

Before people vote for SDP, just think about Chee's lack of wisdom, lack of senior management ability, lack of financial planning, and his simple mindedness.

Of course, he talks democracy, protests, and civil disobedience --- if these are what Singaporeans look forward for their children.

If you want a sensible opposition to check and balance PAP, support Mr Chiam and his team, instead of a foolish Chee and his sharp-tongued sister.

Winning votes doesn't mean you are democratic.Every s'porean knows that alot of people vote for PAP out of fear, especially the older ones. Is that democracy? I have pesonally heard stories of friends' family members deciding to vote for PAP cos they believe the government will prosecute them if they don't. Another friend thought that she would be fined if she do not hang the flag out on national day.WTF has this country become? Even PAP supporters live in fear, even more so because they can't afford to be the black sheep of the famiLee.
