While protecting the rights of migrant works in Singapore is laudable, it’s equally important to raise awareness of the plight of Singaporean workers who are left at the mercy of employers. The government with its bogus NTUC, is in cahoots with employers who are mainly foreigners to exploit the workers to the hilt.

There is no minimum wage. Local employees are exploited by contract and temporary placements with long hours of work, far exceeding the maximum of 44 hours a week. There is no tenure of employment for Singaporean workers. In some cases, Singaporean employees are treated far worse than the foreigners with whom the locals had to compete for low wages to “put food on the table” for their families. Able bodied locals queue up at temples and other charity homes for free meals in our First World Singapore. The children of these workers go to school without pocket money.

Of course, the desperate conditions of local workers go unreported in the newspapers that are totally under the control of the PAP.

What is needed is a coordinated approach to address the exploitation of both foreign and Singaporean workers in our country. The conditions of foreign workers are deplorable and so is the predicament of Singaporean workers who are equally left to fend for themselves.

At least, there is Human Rights Watch and local NGOs ready to air the sufferings of migrant workers. But there is none for our workers.
