Jaslyn (left), Jo-elle (centre) and Siok Chin Jaslyn Go

I first met Siok Chin at SDP's annual dinner in 2007. That was also my first encounter with Dr Chee Soon Juan.

When I saw this supposed "feisty lady" in person, she gave me a very different impression as compared to her public persona portrayed by our local media. She struck me as rather personable and humorous, certainly not the kind of “siao char bo” (mad woman) some people describe her to be.

A friend who stays in Woodlands told me that she did not vote for the SDP in the last elections because she was afraid that the parliament would turn into a circus if its candidates got in. Though I did not agree with her comment, I could not fault her because at that time that was my opinion of the SDP as well.

As I mentioned in my earlier blog posting, my friendship with Siok Chin started to develop after the World Consumer Rights' Day/Tak Boleh Tahan! protest on March 15 this year where 12 protesters were arrested and brought to the Cantonment Police Complex.

Siok Chin was the first person I bailed out that night. I was later charged as well and because of that, we kept in touch through emails, phone calls and meeting up in person.

I came to realise that Siok Chin and I have a lot in common: We are both left-handed, we both love chocolates, and we both possess a wry sense of humour.

We worked together on the recent Democrats Go Hawaiian dinner and even though it was hard work, we rather enjoyed ourselves. Even when the manager of the originally venue cancelled our booking at the last minute, it did not dampen our mood. We just went on a search for another venue.

We were meeting like every other day, sometimes from morning till evening. Siok Chin even accompanied me to pick up my kids and sent them home before continuing with our chores.

That was when she visited my home. My dad, who was all along against me getting too close to SDP members, met her for the first tme. Siok Chin was the ever respectful type, greeting my dad warmly with “Hi Uncle.”

The next day my mom (who was won over by Mrs Chee and Siok Chin when I took her to the first Tak Boleh Tahan! campaign in Toa Payoh) called to tell me my dad told her he met Siok Chin and she came across as a nice lady and not what he read from the newspapers.

Of course, some supporters like to describe Siok Chin as an iron lady. But behind this iron lady’s mask, there is the gentle side of Siok Chin. For one thing, she truly loves kids. She makes it a point to know my children's names, and chat and play with them. And she never fails to prepare sweets and chocolates whenever she knows she is going to see them. My children, especially my daughter has taken to her, affectionately calling her “Aunty Siok Chin”.

Once my little gal called me while I was out with Siok Chin and wanted to come along. She insisted that I came home to take her out for a “girls' outing” with her Aunty Siok Chin.

We had a good time shopping for stuff for the Hawaiian-themed party and realised that we have one more thing in common – we were both good bargainers. Notwithstanding the need to count pennies, Siok Chin made every effort to ensure the guests got the best out of the $25-dinner ticket.

I did ask Siok Chin and other members why not charge more as I believed that people would be willing to pay more to support the event. They told me that times are bad, and that they wanted to do something to show their appreciation to these supporters.

Siok Chin is one lady with strong convictions. The sacrifices she has made for her beliefs - from being jailed to being made a bankrupt and not given permission to travel – is admirable.

The way she handled the officials from the Media Development Authority at the screening of One Nation Under Lee, the only protester who kept her Tak Boleh Tahan t-shirt after being arrested, and questioning Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong, shows an individual of substance.

She is a good friend whom you can rely on, a sister you can share silly jokes with, and a good role model that I hope I can keep up with. She is an inspiration.

Keep up the good work, Siok Chin.

The media did their best to portray the opposition in a negative light... and it's starting to change (for the better)... SDP should definitely work on the next GE..
  • NOT MY SDP
It's good to know that these people have a humane side
  • Clear eyed - A woman of strong conviction
Having met and spoken to Siok Chin at several SDP events, I can vouch that Siok Chin is a person who has her heart in the right place, a clear mind and the courage to face up to intimidation. She may appear an "iron lady", but that's only the steel of her conviction.
  • Fong M.Y. - Jo-elle is A Fortunate Child.
I'm sure Jo-elle will grow up to understands what her Mother and Auntie are doing now is for her good future.
She will definitely be nurtured to a principled person, live with good moral values and gains respect.
Unlike the bias High Court Judge Berlinda Ang, she had brought Great Shame to her own Profession, Parents, Family and Ancestor.

    Hi Miss Chee,
If I am not wrong, I might be the first batch of student u taught back in QSTS (I bet u know what that is) in 1988. I was in sec one too so we were both new to that school ;P u were pretty new too with mr ong and miss ho in the new batch of teachers. I was from an all boy class that was pretty naughty and noisy, and I can still fondly remember u shouting from a distance at us "wake up ur ideas!" and urging us to run more labs when I attended ur PE lessons. :P

anyway I hope u r ok with everything over there and thanks jaslyn for the posting.

hope u read this posting, Miss Chee. U are one of the teachers I miss since I left QSTS a long long time ago.

    regards

Although I do not not agree with SDP's views on many issues.. I do believe Ms Chee is not a mad woman having seen her "in action" afew times.

Hope all is well for you guys at SDP.

You'll go down in the annals of Singapore as a woman of grace, dignity, integrity and courage. One who fought for and UTIMATELY suceeded in fighting for Singaporeans rights, freedom and democracy.

    Salute. We shall overcome!!

  • Jaslyn Go - Thank You..
Thanks for all the nice compliments from the readers..

I hope readers get to know the other side of Siok Chin, not the one that was painted by our state's control media..

If you got to know any of the PAP MPs personally, they are also not the money grubbing and power hungry people portrayed by netizens or even SDP news. A lot of them are nice and friendly people. Will anyone change their perception of PAP because of that?
  • exSINgaporean - Nice lady I agree 100%
I met her for the first time in the SDP headquarter in mid Aug 2008. Yes she is indeed a "ordinary" person and not a mad lady.

In fact I met many of the committee members on that day and they are just "ordinary" people with EXTRAORDINARY guts to walk their principle.

and i suppose the sdp ran this article to impress and distract?

i mean, are you trying to gain votes by appealing to the humanistic and sympathetic side of us?

i wonder what exactly has prompted the author to write that article here.

in any case, it is not enough to be nice, polite and lovable with kids, dear sdp.

surely you know it isnt about greeting old people nicely. popularity matters, but competence matters more.

we've not seen ms chee shine professionally and in any executive positions, it is hard for us to love her and think she worthy of our sacred vote just because we now know, supposedly, that OH she isnt as bad as she is portrayed to be by the media. does that warrant support for her and her party? certainly, a support based upon this premise is shallow and insubstantial, much like what the entire article has been about.

voters do not just need to know that you are well-liked by your friends; it is a no-brainer that friends perceive and portray one another in good light, if not you guys wont be friends anymore! what voters are interested is to know that as a politician, you are able and competent. we dont vote a nice, but weak and incompetent, person into office. we vote the person who demonstrates ability to govern, character to do it with the right set of attitudes and the flair for connecting with the people, indeed.

ms chee, work harder at convincing us of your suitability for the office. do not hide behind the praises of a friend - how much more bias can you guys churn out man?
  • Fair mind
These are people who are bankrupted, harassed, arrested, put on trials, prevented from leaving Singapore, and disqualified to stand for elections.

This kind of dedications and sacrifices cannot be compensated by the $14,000 MP allowance even they stood a chance in future.

They do what they do for their believes. Don't flattered yourself that they are begging for your votes.
Thanks for all the nice compliments from the readers..

My son and I took a few snaps with Dr. Chee when I was in his HQ in mid Aug 2008. In one of my photo, my 86 year old Singaporean dad was in the background. I am of course a "exSINgaPOORean"; now a proud Canadian.

Guess what? My dad told me when he showed his neighbours about this photo, they asked the "same old question": "Are you not afraid to be arrested?"

There is such a deep fear among SingaPOOReans that they even dare not get near to an opposition figure, let alone take a snap with them or vote for the opposition. They fear grips each an every Singapore citizen.

Thus it will take some brave souls to "get to know" any opposition members.

    It is sad...very sad.

I suppose your post has something to do with politics? Dirty politics, that is. It is scums like you who are dense up there who is not able to differentiate between right and wrong. Now I know there are scums like you in the pro-PAP camp. This is the wrong place for you. Go back to the hole you crawled out from. Shoo...

    Curious,
I can see Ms Chee working very hard, to the extent of being arrested for her work. What do you see in those foreign-import MPs? Throwing their weight around, firing this person and that person, have you forgotten the Olympics table tennis saga?
You seem like the prime candidate for foreign minibonds. Cash out your Lehman minibonds yet?
  • Wisely
Why, I just realised the SDP website has a function that allow its supporters to vote thumbs down and grey out text critical of SDP to make it not so visible. That doesn't sound very different from ST does it?

What if every SDP article in the ST is greyed and blurred because of the 77% thumbs down it got in the election? What a stupid function.
  • Chee Siok Chin - Thank you
Thank you for your kind words of support and encouragement.

I am humbled by Jaslyn's article. I agree with exSINgaporean that I am indeed an ordinary person. I just happen to have been blessed with opportunity to act on my convictions.

To my ex-student, our first encounter must have taken place some 20 years ago. You must be in your 30s. That makes me...hey, political work keeps one youthful.

Whoever posted this comments must be very sick he or she is either sick or do not have a human sense, why make such a comment when what she is doing is just her side of her story it has not offended you in any way why do you have to stood so low to comments about her mother, SDP should remove such idiot from this blog before he smear the whole website, keep this IDIOT out of the website discussion.
  • AnnA - That's Why Lah... Those Blunt Brains
I have already mentioned before.. those people who detest this website have BLUNT BRAINS... They're not happy with SDP but they keep on coming back to comment. The blunt brains are surely addicted to the truth on this website now....

Miss Chee Siok Chin, female to female, I salute your courages.

Miss Jaslyn Go, you have a good judgement.

Our Ministry of Education rightly stresses 'character development' as an integral aspect of 'national education' and 'civics and moral education'.

For whilst our pupils in school learn what is morally right, they must also learn commitment to the right and acquire the courage to stand up for what they are convinced is right.

Such character development cannot be taught. Indeed, excessive verbalising about character acquisition tends to result in hypocrisy. So here, there is rightly the need to 'teach less' so that puplis 'learn more' by the moral contagion contact with inspirational teachers, such as Miss Chee Siok Chin, afffords.

The real-life example of having 'the courage to be' Siok Chin's biography has provided that former pupil of hers, whose posting above she must have read with great joy, no 'character development programme' nor 'moral education syllabi' the Education Ministry can mount would be able to replace!

    Hi Miss Chee,
Yes exactly 20 years ago, 1988, my first year there :) U were pretty strict with us at that time and we were kinda terrified of u too. :)

I was from 2C. ha ha... the class with a lot of terrifying characters. Not too sure if u remember some of us, I had a classmate called Jinmin who has a hole in his heart and he wasn't able to run during PE lessons, other classmates like Jiawen, Youde, Ziming, desheng and yaozhong.

Anyway, teacher, do keep up the good work as a lot of us do support SDP and her work! Fight for us and for the real freedom of singaporeans!
  • student for 3 years
Oh I forgot to say this, although Miss chee is new, she handles really naughty students very well, and she is never scared of them as a newbie teacher. I like miss chee as she is never biased against students and she does not practice favouritism, also she remembers my name even though I tend to be a quiet and reserved student, that shows she does care a lot about us.

But I do dislike attending ur PE lessons as u are really really strict with us and I hate having to doing EVERYTHING, no eating snakes during PE.
    Ha Ha....

If old auntie Chee Siok Chin is really so good as what you praised, how comw up to now still nobody wants her ???

That goes to say that your writing is very biased, right ? Writing only positive and not giving a fair negative side of her.

How can a person only have all positive sides only ? Who are you trying to cheat ?

If you want to write on a person be fair to give both sides of the person.

Oh, that's an old auntie. Do you have any better ones to introduce ?

Pls allow me to explain my intention when I wrote the article about Siok Chin...

What inspire me to write a article about Siok chin was when I received a picture of both of us taken during SDP's Hawaiian dinner by one of our friend..

It was nothing more than a sincere write up on what I feel about her before and after I got to know her better..Never my intentions to change anyone perception of her / SDP, nor help her / them win votes..I don't think I am that capable to be able to achieve that..

I,at best, hope that readers read with a open mind and see the other side of CSC which many might not have known.

This is not the first time I wrote about someone whom I feel strongly about..I wrote 2 articles on my Gynea after his demise..I guess I am the sort who bothers to put my thoughts into writing.. :-)
  • Tan Tai Wei
So, twenty years or so ago, Miss Chee's 'student for three years' experienced her as unbiased, showing no favouritism, caring and personal, knowing students by name, yet not promoting freedom without responsibility, by being 'strict' where necessary during PE, in the field where student conduct tended to become lax. And she was then only a beginning teacher, probably just 21?

Those qualities of character were shown in lower secondary classes, where a tyrannical teacher would have much room for immoral assertion of power among wards too weak and ignorant to complain.

So, even as a young adult, her liberal and responsible, just and caring nature, had been motivated intrinsically, practised in a context where she could easily be someone else.

And those same qualities, and after some twenty years of more 'growing up', she now offers Singaporeans poltically, even recently going to jail for what she perceived as being true to a just course.
  • student for 3 years
    Hi Tan Tai Wei,
U summed up everything really well for me, Yes I like her as a teacher but hated PE lessons, guess that's my character and nothing to do with Miss Chee being strict. :)

U know we were growing up at that time, being students and teacher, we never really have a chance to talk on an equal par, guess we will someday.

I think the local media is not doing Singaporeans or even my former teacher any justice and it is not providing an alternative voice or solutions to the problems in Singapore and if it keeps writing nonsensical articles, smearing dirt on people who genuinely want to see a better change in sg, I dread to see our future.

what we need is a voice, a channel where people can voice their opinions or grievances properly without fear or prosecutions. A place where we can breathe freely and feel that we belong to her.

I sincerely pray that God saves Singapore soon not some other self-proclaimed God or vampire who is the problem himself rather than the solution.

Anyway thanks for everything, I feel like a broken record. Ha..:)

p/s:Miss chee, there is a group profile for my batch 1988-1991 on facebook started by someone from 2D. u have to type in the school's full name to search for it. :) enjoy!
  • tan ah kow - Too juvenile and mushy
This article tries to portray the softer side of Miss Chee by highlighting that she bought chocolate for the author's kids

This is exactly why I will not vote for SDP - they treat the readers like uneducated juvenile fools.

You do not convince the electorate of singapore by such junvebile acts. WAKE UP And solve real problems

Liberty is meaningless where the right to utter one’s thoughts and opinions has ceased to exist. That, of all rights, is the dread of tyrants. It is the right which they first of all strike down.
