SDP appeals for help on behalf of East Timorese in Singapore

There are 18 refugees from East Timor who are currently in Singapore and are awaiting entry into Darwin, Australia. Their houses and other belongings have been completely destroyed or stolen by the pro-Jakarta militia in East Timor. Two of the refugees only narrowly escaped the violence when the house of Bishop Carlos Belo, from whom they were seeking shelter, was looted and burned down. The group, which include children and infants, fled from Dili when the chaos began immediately after the referendum vote.

Our friends from East Timor are in need of funds for accomodation and food. The SDP calls on the Government to provide these displaced families with accomodation, food and medical care. The SDP is presently helping to take care of the needs of these friends and would welcome assistance from fellow Singaporeans. Please call 352-8925 or email sdp2000@pacific.net.sg
