Foreign delegates have started to arrive in Singapore in time for the International Youth Conference for Democracy (25-27 July 2003). Delegates will be invited to a welcome dinner this evening at a restaurant in Singapore’s very own Little India.
The main portion of the 3-day conference will be open to the public. Saturday’s (26 July) program will consist of plenary sessions where participants will get to listen to and discuss the various issues related to youth politics. Lunch will be provided for those who have registered early. Refreshments will be available for all participants.
Following the day’s events, the delegates and speakers will enjoy a sumptuous dinner at a Chinese restaurant. Their abilities as politicians, activists and student leaders will be further tested when they are called upon to voice out at a post-dinner karaoke sing-along.
Another half-day (closed-door) session then awaits the delegates where they will discuss future cooperation and initiatives that may be suggested at the public conference the day before. A press conference will be called on Sunday at the end of the discussion to announce future plans for the youth movement in Singapore and the region.
“The program is tightly packed and I’m sure the delegates will find it very busy, but ultimately, rewarding as well,” said Ms Chee Siok Chin, conference co-ordinator.
The delegates will depart on 27 July.
Ms Chee added, “Its been a crazy few weeks for the organising committee as far as work is concerned especially in the days running up to the conference itself. But it’s also very exciting to see so much interest in the democratic movement among young people. It’s a first for Singapore and the Singapore Democrats will see that it won’t be the last.”
For those who have not registered for the conference, please go to Carlton Hotel (76 Bras Basah Road) Esplanade Room (4th floor). We’ll save a seat for you. Admission is free. Whether young or not-so-young, everyone is welcome!
