Executioners also suffer

I have just learned from other websites that Nguyen Tuong Van has been hanged.

My condolences go to his family. [SDP: This letter was written I did write to the Prime Minister, the Mister of Law, the Attorney General, and the UN representative. None replied to my letter. I would be interested to hear from anyone else who wrote and whether or not they received a reply.

The article on executioner Darshan Singh was interesting. It states that before executing the prisoner he says “I am going to send you to a better place than this. God bless you.”. Saying “God bless you.” to someone you’re seems hypocritical. When Britain last had the death penalty the judge would always say “And Lord have mercy on your soul” after passing a death sentence.

I think that was hypocritical as well. I also think it’s wrong that he should be paid to execute people. I wasn’t entirely surprised to learn that Mr Singh’s marriage broke up because his wife couldn’t accept what he did. I’m certainly not surprise that the two prison officers who Mr Singh tried to train for the job of hangman both resigned when they realised they couldn’t go through with it.

The job of executioner does have a bad affect on the person who does it. It’s even been know for former executioners to commit suicide. One of Britain’s last executioners, Albert Pierrepoint, resigned after a dispute over a cancelled execution.

He later concluded that the death penalty was not an effective deterrent. And he should know, he killed more people legally than any of the people he hanged could have done legally. The fact that Mr Singh is a Manchester United supporter is a completely useless piece of information.

I was interested to read the two letters from Australia supporting the execution of Nguyen Tuong Van. I don’t know any details about the rape case mentioned in Aaron Loo’s letter, and fail to see what it has to do with the plight of Nguyen Tuong Van.

But it could be that the defendant was acquitted because there was insufficient proof that he was guilty of rape. And lastly I wonder if it would be possible for Shane Jensen to express his opinions on the death penalty without insulting anyone who disagrees with him.
