Ms Chee Siok Chin is currently in Marrakech, Morocco to attend the 54th Congress of the Liberal International (LI).
Ms Chee is part of the delegation of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) of which the SDP is a member.
She will brief members of the LI about the deteriorating democratic situation in Singapore. The President of the organization, Lord John Alderdice, recently took issue with the continued suppression of civil and political rights in Singapore (see statement).
Ms Chee was in Doha, Qatar last week to attend the International Civil Society Forum for Democracy 2006 at the invitation of the Government of Qatar. The conference was organised to promote the democratic agenda across the world.
Ms Chee was also nominated as a delegate for the Asia Society’s upcoming Asia 21 Young Leaders Summit, to be held on November 17-19, 2006 in Seoul, South Korea.
She is among the 200 “emerging leaders” from across Asia and America to attend the Summit whose agenda is to explore ways to address the critical issues facing the Asia-Pacific community.
Delegates will continue to work together following the conference and will be invited to future summits. Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung will give the keynote address.
