Singapore police stop Burmese protesters at Orchard Road

The SDP understands that a group of 23 Burmese protesters staged a march along Orchard Road last Saturday, 25 Aug 07, to show support for their fellow nationals in Rangoon.

In the past few weeks, capital Rangoon and several towns in Burma saw a series of protests against fuel price hikes. Many arrests have been made.

The police warned the group in Singapore against organising and participating in illegal assemblies. They protesters were dressed in white and congregated outside the Orchard Road MRT Station and marched all the way to the City Hall MRT Station

It is understood the assembly in Singapore was initiated through the short messaging service (SMS). There were reports that there would be another similar protest this weekend.

The Singapore Government has enjoyed a cozy relationship with the generals of Burma, who come regularly to seek hospital treatment in Singapore.
