A Singapore official has called for more healthcare professionals from abroad to work in the country as the sector is set to see radical changes.
As Singapore’s population is predicted to rise from 4.5 million to 5.5 million over the next 12 years, better healthcare will be needed to deal with the ageing populace, the Straits Times reported.
The country is also seeing demands for improved levels of care and need professionals such as nurses, doctors and pharmacists from abroad to fill the gaps in the jobs market.
However, healthcare minister Khaw Boon Wan admitted that this would be “a major undertaking”.
Mr Boon said: “Our teaching hospitals are participants in the global search for better treatments, quicker diagnoses and more effective disease prevention strategies.”
The country’s prime minister Lee Hsien Loong said last weekend that overseas workers and migrants living in Singapore are a credit to the economy.
