Almost 2,000 in anti-ISA gathering

Bernama

Almost 2,000 people from non-governmental organisations and opposition parties took part in a peaceful gathering near Puduraya calling on the Government to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA).

They started gathering there at 8pm last night and dispersed one hour later.

Dang Wangi police chief Asst Comm Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said police had received information that a gathering was scheduled to be held at Dataran Merdeka.

“But we had placed our people at various roads leading to Dataran Merdeka and this had caused the group to change the location of the gathering to an area near Puduraya.

“No untoward incident happened during the gathering and no arrests were made, but it added to the traffic congestion there,” he said.

In remembrance of ‘Reformasi 1998’

Tian Chua

Tian Chua

September 1998 was a watershed in the nation’s political landscape. Never before had Malaysians witnessed such infighting in Umno.

On Sept 2, they saw the sacking of the deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, who was also finance minister. He was arrested eight days later.

Old and young alike took to the streets in the thousands in October. Ethnic barriers were breached as people demanded justice and screamed for reformation …

In this segment, we interview one of the earliest reform activists and currently PKR member-of-parliament for Batu and the party’s info chief, Tian Chua.

Ever since graduating from the University of New South Wales, Australia Tian has been involved in work with non-governmental organisations (NGOs), especially labour and trade union activism.

Some would refer to Tian Chua as ‘brave’. Others as ‘foolhardy’ and ever since standing in the way of a police water canon truck in a 1999 reformasi protest, he has established a reputation as a tireless worker in defence of the marginalized and the exploited.
