Singapore container traffic shrinks again

CargoNews Asia

Singapore’s trade performance last month appears likely to have worsened dramatically, according to full-year figures on container movements released by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Straits Times reported.

Last month’s container throughput probably fell almost 14 percent from the same month a year earlier, based on figures derived from the full-year data.

This would make December the second straight month of container movement contraction, and the extent of the contraction far exceeds November’s 1.5 percent fall, which was the first decline since the dot.com bust in 2001.

On the bright side, for the full year, container throughput continued to grow, rising 7.1 percent from 2007 to 29.9 million standard-sized containers.
