The waters in and around Singapore reported more piracy cases for ships this year, local media reported on Monday.
Piracy hit a five-year high in the South China Sea, with 10 sea attacks reported so far this year, exceeding 2005’s record of nine, local newspaper the Straits Times reported on Monday.
Sea robbers have also been active in the Strait of Malacca and Strait of Singapore. Pirates have boarded ships on five occasions so far this year and made attempted boarding once. The two waterways saw one attack and three attempts over the same period last year.
According to the data released by the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP), the worst-hit vessels have been oil tankers and large container ships.
