Dr Chee Soon Juan has written letters to the forum pages of the Lianhe Zaobao and Straits Times over the interview that was published by Zaobao on 28 Feb 10 where the newspaper said that the SDP secretary-general was evasive when asked about his income.

The Straits Times followed up on Zaobao’s interview and published its own report the following day Chee on foreign funds, Chiam’s exit from SDP (1 Mar 10). Straits Times did not contact Dr Chee to clarify any of the points made by the Chinese newspaper.

Dr Chee wrote to the two newspapers on Sunday 7 Mar 10.  He couldn’t respond earlier as he was serving his jail sentence last week after being convicted of protesting during the WB-IMF meeting in 2006.

As the newspapers have indicated previously that they will not publish letters that are posted on this website, we will not reproduce Dr Chee’s letters until after it is published (or if they are refused publication) by the newspapers.

There are some important points that need to be clarified and raised over the subject of foreign funding and the Singapore Democrats are happy to discuss this matter openly and publicly.  We therefore call on Lianhe Zaobao and Straits Times to publish Dr Chee’s letters in the interest of public debate and discussion.

We will keep readers informed of the developments of this matter.
