Singapore parliament on Tuesday passed the amendment bills for the parliamentary and presidential elections.
According to local TV broadcaster Channel NewsAsia, the changes revolve around a new cooling off day, the Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMP) scheme as well as internet election advertizing.
The cooling off day will be on the eve of polling day, when no campaigning except for party political broadcasts is allowed. This will apply to both Singapore’s presidential and parliamentary elections.
The government said this would give Singaporeans time to reflect rationally on issues raised before going to the polls.
The changes to the electoral system pave the way for the next general election, due by February 2012.
