Come May 15, there will be a massive sea of pink in Hong Lim Park as the Pink Dot reforms
It was the largest gathering ever recorded at Hong Lim Park in Singapore’s history when over 2,500 Singaporeans turned up for Pink Dot, a movement in support of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people here. And the Pink Dotters are at it again, organizing another gathering which aims to break the previous record.
Enough color to make Pink Floyd jealous.
It all happens on May 15, (that’s tomorrow, for you out there not paying attention) from 5pm to 6.30pm at the Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park. Come dressed in all things pink — caps, hats, wigs, sunglasses, umbrellas and other accessories are highly encouraged. The Pink Dot ambassadors Adrian Pang, Tan Kheng Hua and DJ Big Kid will be there, along with other LGBT supporters, where performances and freebies can be expected.
It’s not a mass rally, more a carnival, which is “a 100 percent legit and legal event” according to the organizers, although don’t expect any Mardi Gras-que procession. As with the previous year, a giant pink dot will be formed, where a photograph will be taken from a nice vantage spot.
It’s a sensitive topic in Singapore, but as the website puts it, “everyone should have the freedom to love, regardless of sexual orientation. But fear, ignorance and prejudice often stand in the way. At Pink Dot, we believe the first step to overcoming these barriers is for open-minded segments of society to come together.”
