Xinhua NewsThe Myanmar authorities have revoked a business company, run by a Singaporean citizen, on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking, the local Biweekly Eleven reported Thursday.
Without naming the person and the company, the authorities had denied entry visa to the Singaporean citizen and his company, based in Yangon’s Kamayut township, was also blacklisted, the report said.
The suspected case was exposed with evidence through diplomatic channels, the report added.
According to local report, a total of 302 people were victimized by human traffickers in Myanmar in 2009, of which children accounted for 45 or 15 percent.
The Department of Combating Transnational Crime also said starting 2005 when the country promulgated the anti-human trafficking law, the authorities have so far exposed 335 related cases, punishing over 1,000 offenders and rescuing over 1,000 victims.
Of them, 80 percent were smuggled to China, while other 15 percent to Thailand, it said.
Other figures show that as of 2008, a total of 686 victims, trafficked out of Myanmar, have been rescued and brought back to the country under government-to-government system.
Among the victims, those who were repatriated back from Thailand stood the majority with 344, according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
