An attempt by a Malaysian boatman to smuggle three Chinese nationals into Singapore last night was foiled by the city-state’s authorities.

The 28-year-old boatman, and his passengers, a 37-year-old man, and two women, aged 28 and 34, were arrested after their speedboat sank during a sea chase.

Relating the case today, Singapore police said acting on a tip-off, Police Coast Guard and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority officers detected the unlit speedboat moving towards the waters off Pulau Ubin at around 9.30 pm.

The boat was immediately intercepted by the coast guard upon its entry into Singapore territorial waters.

Despite repeated verbal warnings and the firing of flares, the boatman refused to stop the speedboat, police said.

Instead, he made several dangerous manoeuvres in an attempt to shake off the police pursuit.

At one juncture, he made a sharp turn at high speed and lost control of the speedboat which capsized and sank.

The four people were immediately rescued by the pursuing officers, and placed under arrest for not having any valid travel documents.
