S’pore to make changes to Cabinet

The Singapore government Wednesday announced a minor reshuffle to the current cabinet line-up that will take effect from Monday.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office Wednesday evening said Law Minister K. Shanmugam would concurrently be appointed as the Home Affairs Minister, replacing Wong Kan Seng who is also Deputy Prime Minister.

Wong in turn will take over the job as Co-ordinating Minister for National Security from Prof S. Jayakumar who will relinquish the post to remain as Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Wong will also oversee the National Population and Talent Division, which will be set up under the Prime Minister’s Office to coordinate Singapore’s population and talent policies across different ministries.

The statement said Jayakumar would continue to coordinate policies on climate change, oversee foreign policy matters which cut across different ministries and take charge of foreign policy issues which involve legal negotiation or international adjudication.

Meanwhile, acting Information, Communications and the Arts Minister Lui Tuck Yew would be promoted to full minister.

Two Senior Parliamentary Secretaries, Dr Amy Khor and Masagos Zulkifli will be promoted to State Ministers in their current ministries.

Khor will remain in the Environment and Water Resources Ministry while retaining her appointment as Mayor of the South West Community Development Council and Chairman of REACH.

Masagos will continue to remain in the Education and the Home Affairs ministries.

Another two Parliamentary Secretaries, Sam Tan and Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman will be promoted to Senior Parliamentary Secretaries in their respective ministries.

Tan is currently the Parliamentary Secretary of Trade and Industry, and Information, Communications and the Arts ministries, while Mohamad Maliki is the Parliamentary Secretary of the National Development Ministry.
